They went into it, begining with small orders and gradually working up to larger ones, including one for $25 which they had got cashed after McNaughton had been defeated for reelection. Hodges, mother of Irve Young, the harness maker, died at her residence on Hudson street; early on Christmas morning, after a. lorig illness. Funeral services were conducted a t ' he house by Rev. Jas. Provan, on Wednesday morning at: 10 a m. DEATH OF CONVERSE CI-OSE. Converse Chise, neof the best knowiv of Kent county's pioneers, died last: Friday. He bad-Jieen an invalid for twenty-two yeirs. Mr. Close was born in Xew York state in 1822. Her came to Kent county in 1843 and witlc $S00 which he hud earned teaching school bought 240 acres of land in' Grattan township. He wad married the next year to Mary B. Potter. The township was then covered by a dense forest, but the young pair were determined to be married in Grattan, and they decided the location- by blazed trees. They stood on one side of the line in Kent county and the justice on the oth -r side, in Ionia j county, the ceremony being performed under the huge trees. Mr. Closs taught the first SCIKMII in Grattan, never had a law suit in his life and at various times had filled most of the township offices. After thirty five years of farming, he retired with a fine fortune and resided in Grattati' village up to the time of bb death. THE VAX DUSEX WILL. A law suit which has beeni in the courts for some time and which has been five days on trial, was ended yes-terday. I t was a replevin suit brought by David Arnold, who lives in the southwest part of this township against J o h n Taylor of this village. Mr. Arnold was represented by F. H .
