Deichmann and Dr. S. John David Auditorium. The university wore a festive look with staff, students, research scholars and invitees thronging the Auditorium. Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao outlined the progress of the university from its humble origins in 1975, as a P.G. Centre of Andhra University. He said that the university is now ranked among the best in the country serving the academic needs of Guntur and Prakasam districts. The Vice- Chancellor thanked educationists, philanthropists and social activists, who had played a role in moulding the university. Focus would be placed on quality and independent research, he said. Continuing the annual tradition, the university conferred Pratibha Puraskarams on eleven eminent personalities from various fields. Awards / Prizes were also conferred on teachers for their research activities and on colleges / students for best performance in various categories.

36th FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATIONS

Acharya Nagarjuna University celebrated its 36th Foundation Day with great pride and jubilation onSeptember 11, 2012 in the H.H. Deichmann and Dr. S. John David Auditorium. The university wore a festivelook with staff, students, research scholars and invitees thronging the Auditorium.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao outlined the progress of the universityfrom its humble origins in 1975, as a P.G. Centre of Andhra University. He said that the university is now rankedamong the best in the country serving the academic needs of Guntur and Prakasam districts. The Vice-Chancellor thanked educationists, philanthropists and social activists, who had played a role in moulding theuniversity. Focus would be placed on quality and independent research, he said.

Continuing the annual tradition, the university conferred Pratibha Puraskarams on eleven eminentpersonalities from various fields. Awards / Prizes were also conferred on teachers for their research activitiesand on colleges / students for best performance in various categories.

SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM

Dr. K.R.R. Mohan Rao Centre for ScientificSocialism had organized a lecture programme as part ofits Occasional Lectures Series, on August 02nd, 2012.Dr. Ravi Sinha of Lucknow, who was trained as a theoreticalphysicist and obtained Doctoral degree from M.I.T,Cambridge, USA, delivered a lecture on the theme MutantModernities, Socialist Future on August 02nd, 2012 in theUniversity. This programme was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V. Rao.

ENDOWMENT LECTURES

Dr. Pinnamaneni Narasimha Rao Endowment Lecturewas delivered by Dr. I. Venkateswara Rao, M.D., Vice-Chancellor, NTR Health University, Vijayawada on 18th July2012 at Acharya Nagarjuna University Campus. TheEndowment was delivered on the topic ‘Incretin Hormonesin the Management of Diabetes Mellitus’. Prof. K. V. Prof.Y.Radhakrishna Memorial Endowment Lecture wasdelivered by Dr.S.Ayyappan, Secretary, Department ofAgriculture Research & Education and Director General,Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi on 21st

July 2012 at Acharya Nagarjuna University Campus. TheEndowment Lecture was delivered on the topic ‘Fish ForAll’. Prof. K.V. Rao, Vice Chancellor presided over themeeting. The Rector, the Registrar, the Principal ANUCollege of Arts, Commerce and Law, the Principal, ANUCollege of Science and members of faculty and Studentsof Science and Pharmacy attended the Lecture. Prof.K.RSambasiva Rao, Chairman, BOS, Zoology andBiotechnology coordinated the lecture. An interactionsession with the aqua farmers of this region was conducted,so that the problems pertaining to the aqua farming can bebrought to the notice of Dr. S. Ayyappan.

BEST TEACHER AWARDS 2012The following teachers received the Best Teacher Awards for the year 2012 from the A.P. State Government –

Sri Hari, Ex-Vice-Chancellor ofDravidian University, Kuppam, delivered the keynoteaddress. 100 delegates presented their papers on Teluguand Sanskrit Neetikavyas in Eight parallel technicalsessions. The Registrar Prof. R.R.L. Kantham presidedover the Valedictory Session and Prof. M. MadhusudanaRao, Dean of Humanities, graced the occasion as the Guestof honour. Prof. K. Sambasiva Murthy, Dean, Faculty ofEducation from Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur,delivered the Valedictory address.

The team is visiting universities, sensitizingthem to take appropriate measures in issuing certificates,such as Marks Lists, Provisionals, consolidated Marks listsand Original Degrees. They also explained careeropportunities in the US.

Kantam,Registrar, were present. The artists exhibited the rare andrich, valuable skills of ancient Andhra Pradesh. Department of Lifelong Learning organized anAwareness Programme on “Environmental Protection” inMorning Star Degree College at Phirangipuram of GunturDistrict on 3rd August 2012.

Dr. A.V.S.S. Swamy, Faculty from the Dept. ofEnvironmental Sciences, ANU, was the resource personfor the programme. He explained in depth the differentcauses of pollution and the way in which youngsters canmake efforts to protect the environment. CollegeCorrespondent Mr. M. Sundarababu, Principal Pulla Reddy,Department staff Mrs. P. Pushpa Rani, Mr. M.V. Ramana,and Mr. Rajasekhar participated in the programme. Morethan 300 students got benefited by this programme.

Orientation Programme on “Capacity BuildingDepartment of Lifelong learning organized an

Orientation Programme on “Capacity Building “ to the JSSand ZSS volunteers of Guntur district on 29th and 30th August2012 in Dr. H. H. Deichmann Auditorium, ANU. Prof. T.Umamaheswara Rao, Principal of ANU College of Arts,Commerce and Law, inaugurated the OrientationProgramme. Addressing the volunteers he said that theknowledge acquired through such orientation programmesneed to be transmitted to the grassroots level to achievebest results.

55 JSS and 20 ZSS volunteers of Guntur districtparticipated in the orientation programme. Resource personsfrom within and outside the University were invited to covervarious aspects like, Literacy Movement, Impact of Govt.Programmes on vocational activities in rural areas, StressManagement and Meditation, Communication, DomesticViolence Act, Youth Empowerment & Development, andEnvironment Protection

The whole programme was coordinated and presidedover by Prof. P. Syama Thrimurthy with the support ofdepartment staff Mrs. P. Pushpa Rani, Mr. M.V.Ramana &Mr. Sivaiah and with the cooperation of JSS Director Mr. P.Srinivasa Rao.

Prof. K. V. Rao, Vice Chancellor of ANU was the ChiefGuest for the valedictory function. Addressing the volunteers,Prof. K.V. Rao said that only 17% of the literates are enrolling

in universities for higher education. Hence, we still have togo a long way to achieve 100% literacy in the country andenrollment in the universities. Later, all the 75 volunteersreceived certificates from Prof. K. V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor,ANU.

Training Programme in Skills Development –“Fabric Painting”

Department of Lifelong Learning organized a OneMonth Training Programme in “Skills Development”.motivated the students to join other skills developmentprogrammes. On the request of the students of ANUEngineering College, “Fabric Painting” was selected fortraining. Mrs. M.V. Rama was the resource person for thetraining. More than 30 Engineering students and 10 studentsfrom other departments had undergone training.

Prof. R.R.L. Kantham, Registrar of ANU, was the ChiefGuest for the valedictory programme held on 7th September2012. Addressing the learners, Prof. Kantam said that alltypes of skills need to be acquired by youngsters in theirstudent days. This will not only help them for employmentbut will also help to become self-sufficient.

Prof. P. Siddaiah, Principal of the ANU College ofEngineering & Technology, examining the exhibits presentedby the students, said that such training programmes helpthe students in bringing out the hidden talent in them. NSS ACTIVITIES (JULY-SEPTEMBER, 2012)Training of Trainers (ToT) for Programme Officers of NSS Special Camp by the NSS Units of Pharmacy and

Engineering Colleges of ANU campus

The NDRF personnel gave live demonstration aboutrescue operations to be carried out and precautionarymeasures to be taken. They also displayed the equipmentused during the emergency situations of natural disasters.The resource persons of the training programme were drawnfrom staff of NDRF of the rank of Assistant Commandants;108 service of District Medical & Health Office of Guntur;Deputy Superintendent Police of Home Guards of Gunturdistrict, and Sri D.Roshan Kumar, Project Director, SEEDS,Guntur. The objective of the training programme was toestablish Emergency Response Units (ERU’s) at all the 300NSS Units under jurisdiction of ANU. The NSS Cell of theANU is the only university having ERU’s at NSS Units.

The NSS Cell, ANU, organised one day TrainingProgramme on 19th July, 2012 on “Strengthening LocalResponse Networks for Disaster Risk Management /Reduction in Andhra Pradesh – ToT on Disaster RiskReduction for Programme Officers of NSS Units” under thejurisdiction of NSS Cell, ANU. The programme went onsuccessfully with 104 participants (38 Programme Officers,NSS Units, Volunteers NSS Units and NDRF Personnel) forthe establishment of Emergency Response Unit (ERU). The10th Battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)Commandant Mr.Prashant Dhar was the Chief Guest andProf. K.Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor of ANU presided overthe inaugural programme. The entire programme wascoordinated by Sri Sanjeev Peethala, State DRM Coordinator,Project Concern International (PCI) and Dr. K.SumanthKumar, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell ANU.

The NSS Units of Pharmacy and Engineering Collegesof ANU campus organized a special camp from 27th July - 4th

August. In this programme clean and green; plantation of1600 saplings of different varieties was carried out at thepremises of their respective campuses with the view ofdeveloping NSS gardens. During the programme, the NSSvolunteers allotted half a day for cleaning the premises ofWomen’s hostel of ANU by removing all unwanted plantsand debris and demolished the snake-pits. University level meeting of Programme Officers ofGuntur and Prakasam Districts

The NSS Cell organized NSS Programme officers’meeting for Guntur and Prakasam districts on 3rdSeptember,2012 for NSS units, ANU. The meeting was presided overby Prof.K.Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor ANU.Dr.K.Sumanth Kumar, Programme Coordinator, NSS Cellapprised the members of the tasks and targets for the year2012-13, calendar of activities (action plan) for colleges andalso emphasized the importance of timely submission ofreports and stressed the importance of effectiveimplementation of calendar of activities. He also made it clearthat in case of failure to implement the activities at theirrespective NSS Units, the units will be declared as sick andwill be allotted to other colleges.

The NSS Cell organized State Level NSS AwardsFunction- 2012, the first of its kind, in the university campuson 24th September, 2012.

the programme 200 NSS volunteers drawn from the differentcolleges of Guntur city were given training on “Environmentalcultural awareness”. The programme was organized alongwith National Green Corps (NGC) as part of bringingawareness about the International Conference onBiodiversity, scheduled in the month of October at Hyderabad.The Project Officer of NGC Mr. Sharath Babu, Project Officer,National Green Corps, Hyderabad and his cultural teamorganized the programme and taught the NSS volunteers toconduct the cultural awareness events to educate peopleabout the environment. A photoexhibition displaying the activities of NSS Cell and NSS Unitsof ANU was inaugurated by Sri G. Gokul Krishna, YouthOfficer/and Head, NSS Regional Office, Hyderabad.

The exclusive website (www.nssanu.org) of NSS Cellof ANU was officially launched by Prof.K.Viyyanna Rao,Vice-Chancellor along with the guests of honour.The speciality ofthis web site is that ANU is the only university in the stateand in south India having an exclusive website of NSS Cell.The website is a part of using information technology foreffective communication, transparency of usage of funds andmaintenance of online database of all activities of all the 300units under jurisdiction of ANU.

The state level NSS awards of 2012 were presentedto the award winners for their services rendered to NSS duringthe year 2011-12.The state Best Programme Coordinatorwas won by Prof.N.Vijaya Ratnam, Ex-ProgrammeCoordinator, NSS Cell, ANU. The celebration reached peakwith the organization of cultural programmes by different NSSUnits of ANU. The entire event was jointly organized by NSSRegional Centre, Hyderabad, State NSS Cell, Hyderabad andNSS Cell, ANU for which specific GO was also issued.

NSS Volunteer selections for West Zone Pre-RD ParadeCamp -2012

The NSS Cell conducted University level NSSVolunteers selections for West Zone “Pre-RD Parade Camp”at NSS Bhavan and also at sports ground of ANU on 26th

September, 2012. The quota allotted for NSS Cell is 3 maleand 4 female NSS volunteers for which 1:5 ratio of NSSvolunteers were called for selection trials. The selectionprogramme was well attended by 77 participants (10

Programme Officers, NSS Units and Volunteers NSS Units)drawn from NSS Units of 10 colleges. The entire selectionprocess was well coordinated by Sri K.C.Reddy, State YouthAssistant NSS Regional Centre, Hyderabad andDr.K.Sumanth Kumar, Programme Coordinator, NSS CellANU. Selection process was made as per the strict guidelinesof physical fitness standards laid down by the specificauthorities include Standard Height Measurement, 400meters running race, march-past, followed by personalinterview of the finalists.

ANU Centre for HRD conducted the Group-I &Group–II (APPSC) coaching classes for SC/ST/OBC andMinorities students from 03-09-2012 to 29-09-2012 in thefirst phase. The Vice-Chancellor Prof.K.V.Rao inauguratedthe programme and the Registrar Prof.RRL Kantamaddressed the students. 600 Students enrolled in thisprogramme. This Coaching programme took place from 3.45pm to 6.45 pm at Students Centre, ANU.

The university held an Anti-Ragging Meet to cre-ate awareness among students about the evil of Ragging,on 3-8-2012. The Chief Guest Sri S. Suresh Kumar,Collector, Guntur District, explained to the students thatRagging is a crime which invites stringent laws and severepunishments, as formulated by the Supreme Court and theRaghavan Committee. Describing Ragging as inimical toa progressive society, he exhorted the students not to spoiltheir careers by indulging in it. The Vice-Chancellor Prof.K.Viyyanna Rao presided over the meeting. Along withuniversity officials were present Mrs. M. V. RamanaKumari, District Legal Services Authority Secretary andMrs. Annapurna Reddy, Additional Superintendent ofPolice (OSD). Students of the Department of Journalismand Mass Communication performed a skit on the menaceof Ragging.

An Eye Donation Awareness Programme wasorganized by Nagarjuna University Teachers’ Association,ANU, on September 4, 2012 in the campus. As part of theprogramme, a Free Eye Testing Camp was also conductedfor the sake of the faculty members. The Vice-ChancellorProf. K.V. Rao inaugurated the programme for whichDoctors and Surgeons of Sankara Eye Hospital,Pedakakani, Guntur provided the medical expertise.
