I Though admitting that all such aid to Soviet were ap- ! parently designed to strengthen Russian resistance against ' Hitler’s army in eastern Europe, the Kokumin pointed out ! that there is more involved than mere danger that will I spread European hostilities to the far East. Defense Bonds and Stam ps, on sale at your bank or post office, are a vital part of Am erica’s defense preparation THE INDIRECT EFFECT OFyTHE “FREEZING ORDER” UPON THE NISEIS, The majority of the Japanese who cameHo Hawaii had an intention of returning to their native country after mak- ing a fortune.^There were no capitalists among them. In fact they came with “kori hitotsu,” ,or one bamboo valise. A quite number of them^had accumulated a substantial sum of money and returned home. Among those who returned there are five or six< listed in the millionaire group. They are engaged in extensive importing and exporting trades. Others however were unable to accomplish Hheir desire. Fortune did not come to them but children were born to them.i There are a very few wealthy Japanese left in this ter- ritory. They have a large family to support, and they had been sending t^ieir surplus earnings to their mother < country either to support the members of their family or for saving and f investment. The amount sent by them, if added, is tre- mendous. Perhaps the circumstances compelled them to do so, but if they had invested their money here, they would haveOaid a solid economic foundation for the Niseis. We hope that there will be no war between the United States and Japan, and we hope for a better^turn of interna- tional relation. The freezing order came to the alien Japanese like< a bombshell. It has a direct effect upon them. But its in- direct econofic effect upon the Nisei is to establish a new foundation for economic solidarity. With the freezing of the foreign ^exchange, the alien Japanese cannot send their mo- ney to Japan. They must invest in local business. They can buy real property for their children. i In the future there might be an inflation and then a de- pression. < We must be prepared for both. During this war money would be increased in circulation and consequently the prices of the commodities will increase. The result would be an unemployment and depression like the one just we have had. They come as an economic cycle. We hope that the Niseis will be economically established by the time they would be approacheed by another terrific depression. Italian Paper Opines that the United States Intended to Extend Credit to Soviet

For War ShipmentsI

T O K Y O , A u g . 21 Though press comm ent on the dispatch o f U n ited States o il to V lad ivostok w ere genera lly mod-

j erate, the Kokum in in its sem i-editoria l warned that Japan I is placed in a ticklish position by the passage o f ships w ith I w ar supplies through w aters so close to Japan and urged the ] governm ent to take “ firm m easures” to preven t disturbance i o f peace in the fa r East.

I Though adm ittin g that all such aid to Sovie t w ere ap- ! paren tly designed to strengthen Russian resistance against ' H it le r ’s a rm y in eastern Europe, the Kokum in pointed out ! tha t there is m ore involved than m ere danger that w ill I spread European hostilities to the fa r East.

The paper em phasized that ships go ing to V lad ivostok m ust pass by one o f fou r routes, f irs t ly , through the bay o f T a rta ry fa r to the n o r th ; secondly, Tsuruga stra its betw een Hokkaido and m ainland Japan; th ird ly . Soya stra its Ijdng betw een H okkaido and Saghalien ; fou rth ly , Tsushim a s tra it betw een Japan and K orea and the passage through all except the f ir s t means brushing Japan w hile enroute. The stra its especially the Soya and Tsuruga stra its are m ost direct routes to V lad ivostok from the U nited States.

This workman stringing power cables through sky near Bonneville Dam on Columbia River is probably tops as an isolationist. He not only is isolated, but insulated. Just ook at the size of the crockery!

THE INDIRECT EFFECT OFyTHE “FREEZING ORDER” UPO N THE NISEIS,

The m a jo r ity o f the Japanese who cam eHo H aw aii had an in tention o f re tu rn in g to th e ir n ative country a fte r m akin g a fortune.^There w ere no capitalists am ong them. In fa c t th ey came w ith “ kori h itotsu ,” ,or one bamboo valise.

A quite num ber o f them^had accumulated a substantial sum o f m oney and returned home. A m on g those w ho returned there are f iv e or six< listed in the m illionaire group. T h ey are engaged in ex tens ive im p ortin g and exporting trades.

O thers how ever w ere unable to accomplish H heir desire. Fortu ne did not come to them but children w ere born to them.i There are a v e ry fe w w ea lthy Japanese le f t in this te r r ito ry . T h ey have a la rg e fa m ily to support, and th ey had been sending t^ieir surplus earn ings to th e ir m other < country e ith er to support the m em bers o f th e ir fa m ily or fo r saving and f investm ent. Th e amount sent by them, i f added, is tre mendous. Perhaps th e circumstances compelled them to do so, but i f they had invested the ir m oney here, th ey would haveOaid a solid econom ic foundation fo r the N iseis.

W e hope tha t there w ill be no w a r betw een the U n ited S tates and Japan, and w e hope fo r a better^turn o f in ternational relation. The fre e z in g o rder came to the alien Japanese like< a bombshell. I t has a d irect e ffe c t upon them . But its ind irect econofic e ffe c t upon the N ise i is to establish a new foundation fo r econom ic solidarity. W ith the fre e z in g o f the fo re ign ^exchange, the alien Japanese cannot send th e ir m oney to Japan. T h ey m ust invest in local business. T h ey can buy real p roperty fo r th e ir children. i

In the fu tu re there m igh t be an in fla tion and then a depression. < W e must be prepared fo r both. D u ring th is w ar m oney would be increased in circu lation and consequently the prices o f the com m odities w ill increase. The resu lt would be an unem ploym ent and depression like the one ju s t w e have had. T h ey come as an economic cycle.

W e hope that the N ise is w ill be econom ically established by the tim e they would be approacheed by another te rr if ic depression. (

Rhea Charters and her grandfather, Major Stephen Charters. «;entleman farmer, live on their ancestral estate near the little town of Marchester. Their money has been dwindling, and now. they are in financial difficulties. The family lawyer writes to a man named Carradine who owes Stephen Charters a large sum. Carradine, an adventurer and oil speculator, replies that he can’t pay his debt but is sending his son Jim to Charters Manor to lend a hand. Rhea can’t see how. this will help and, when Jim a»'i’ives, is antagonistic toward him. While she is showing him over the estate, they see some trucks taking a short cut across one of the fields, carrying mate'ials to a near-by airplane factory under construction. Rhea is furious, especially as this is not the first time the trucks have trespassed. She orders them off ttui property, but one of the tenckmen becomes belligerent. When Jim interferes, the man starts to hit him.

Manager Masato Shiigi's Dokuritsu softball. team really did some heads up ball playing to tuck away the first ^American Nisei Inter-Island softball championship last week-end at the Mooheau Paik.

Dokuritsu did have the breaks as fa r as th e ir schedule in the tournam ent was concerned, fo r th ey played one sem ifin a l m atch on Saturday a fternoon and then the fin a ls on Sunday m orning, but they did p lay tw o hard gam es.

A ga in s t the B. K . Yam am oto team on Saturday, the tussle was a nip and tuck a ffa ir; w ith only a b ig 6-run ra lly fo r th e locals in the e ighth inn ing break ing up the ball game. A ga in s t the Kokusai team in the titu la r fra y , a to rrid gam e was p layed w ith Dokuritsu, like true champions, pulling th rough w ith h its when they w ere m ost needed to win.

Needless to say, Kokusai G ek ijyo had the toughest sch- ■ edule, fo r th ey p layed one quarterfina l gam e and then w ere fo rced to p lay a hard sem i-final m atch r ig h t b efore the fina ls on Sunday m orning. But then team s drew fo r th e ir schedules, so, all was on the up and up.

H ad Kokusai had the breaks in the draw ing th ey would undoubtedly have copped the championship fo r th ey had a

Only losing out to the H ilo Y B A team in the p layo f fs kept the Dokuritsu team from ga rn erin g th e ir f ir s t t it le in the H ilo N ise i so ftba ll league.
