The Affton Midget Major Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL) team

has been ranked No. 1 by MyHockingRankings.com for the majority of the season. That is a good news-bad news scenario. The obvious good news is that the Americans have played up to the rank-ing and been very consistent. The bad news is that they have a target on their back for each and every opponent they play. And being ranked No. 1 in February is not the ultimate goal.

“The guys have set forth a goal that they want to be the last team standing,” Affton coach Chris Flaugher said.

They will have a tough road to keep the top ranking as they will play in the ultra-competi-tive National qualifier March 7-12 at St. Peters. The field features defending national champion Chesterfield Falcons and the always tough, Twin Bridges Lightning. The winner of the qualifier will advance to the National Tournament in April in Hartford.

Affton won its regular season league champion-ship with a 21-2-3 record but was tested in a big way last weekend at the Midget Major CSDHL League Championships.

The Americans had to come from behind in their last three games to capture the tournament title. Affton opened round-robin play with a 5-1 victory over the Northwest Chargers. That game was followed by a comeback for the ages. Twin Bridges had a 4-0 lead with less than seven min-utes remaining. The Americans needed just 3:01 to score four times in the game which ended in a 4-4 tie.

“For the most part all year the guys have come out focused and ready to play,” Flaugher said. “But in this game we were really flat. Goaltending has been a major strength all season for us but I made two different goalie changes. We finally got our first goal with 6:59 to play and that woke us up. All year we have attacked in waves. We have 12 forwards and we use all 12. We have guys with speed,, skill and grit and they showed it at the end of that game.”

The Americans needed a tie or win against the Chicago Sabres to advance to the championship game. It did not look good late in the second period as the Sabres led 3-1. But Affton scored two goals in the final minutes of the sec-ond period and then added an empty

net goal for a 4-3 win (Chicago needed a win and pulled their goalie in the final minute with the score tied 3-3.

Affton closed out the tournament with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Bruins, who are ranked fourth in the country. The score was not at all indicative of the play. Affton, which had beaten the Bruins in three very close games in Chicago, scored first in the championship game. But the Bruins scored a huge goal with five seconds left in the first period and then took a 2-1 lead.

The Americans tied the game and then took the lead 3-2 with six minutes left. The Bruins appeared to have tied the game but the goal was disallowed because of a high stick. Chicago self-destructed at that point. Affton added a pair of insurance goals and added the tournament championship to their resume in addition to the regular season champi-onship. Flaugher said it was a true team effort but singled out Andy McGlynn for outstanding play in the tournament.

“Andy is the youngest guy on the team,” Flaugher said. “He has played defense for most of his life but we have been using him on the top offensive line for most of the year. We moved him back to defense for the tournament and he scored the first goal when we were down 4-0 against Twin Bridges and then scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the championship.”

Members of the Affton Americans Midget Major CSDHL team include: Jacob Bopp; Bill Hindle; Cameron Dulle; Nolan Wuesthoff; Tom Croghan; Phillip Solari; Ryan Croghan; Dustin Smith; Andy McGlynn; Josh Bell; Shawn Leslie; Michael Humme; Ryan Hodges; Lance French; Brian Hogan; John Hogan; Glen Ryan; Frankie Melton; Brendan McClew; and Patrick Mitchell.

FOR WINTER SESSIONS!Ages 3 to Adult

There was drama in Detroit last weekend and this drama had a very happy ending for the 12U AAA Lady Blues.

The Lady Blues won the Tier One Elite Hockey League Playoff Championship in memorable fashion. They not only beat a team which was undefeated in 29 games but did so in five overtimes.

“The girls gave it everything they had,” Lady Blues coach Mark Hallemann said. “They were exhausted at the end.”

The tournament began with a dominating 7-2 win over the Chicago Fury in the first game of round-robin. But the Lady Blues then had to face regular season champion and unbeaten Pittsburgh in the second game. Pittsburgh would keep their unbeaten record intact with a 3-1 win in a very competitive game (the Lady Blues lost to Pittsburgh three times and tied twice).

It seemed inevitable that the two teams would meet up again in the championship game as the Lady Blues only needed a tie against a Milwaukee team they had beaten 9-0 in the regular season. But the first act to the Detroit Drama would occur in this game as Milwaukee came back from a 3-1 deficit to

tie the game 3-3. The Lady Blues would hang on to record a tie and earn a re-match with Pittsburgh in the title game.

“The girls got the 3-1 lead and thought they had it won and got lazy,” Hallemann said.

The championship game was a classic, a game for the ages. It was the 30th game of the season for Pittsburgh, which had yet to lose.

“We played competitive games with them all season but they were definitely the team to beat in the tournament,” Hallemann said. “It starts with their goalie, who is left-handed. She is absolutely the best goalie we have seen at this age.

They also are big defensively and have a couple of very fast forwards.” Pittsburgh also had a big edge in experience. They had 15 skaters and only two of them were 11-years-old. The Lady Blues, on the other hand, had 11 skaters and four were playing up an age division.

The game was scoreless until Skye Ziehwein scored on a pass from Madison Doucette to

give St. Louis a 1-0 lead in the second period. Pittsburgh tied the game later in the period and it would take a long time for the decid-ing goal. The teams played a scoreless third period and then followed with a scoreless five-on-five first overtime, two scoreless four-on-four overtimes and a scoreless three-on-three fourth overtime.

The Lady Blues would end the drama as Calista Rowbottom hit Carmen Marlo with

pass. Marlo beat the Pittsburgh defender and then beat the goalie with a classic shot in the upper right-hand corner.

Goalie Kristin Smith matched save for save

with the Pittsburgh netminder. “I would say that the shots were very even, something like 35-33,” Hallemann said. “I think it was the best game that Kristin played all year.”

The Lady Blues should be finally rested up as they travel to Milwaukee this weekend to play in the Can-Am Tournament.

Members of the 12U AAA Lady Blues include: Caylee Clemons; Madison Doucette; Josey Dunne; Mady Johnson; Carmen Merlo; Peyton Nagy; Mattie Norton; Calista Rowbottom; Chloe Scharfenberg; Kristin Smith; Samantha Stimson; Makenna Webster; and Skye Ziehwein.

EAST ALTON – A 7-4 North Division victory had a definite Edwardsville flair to it Tuesday night in the Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association Class 2A All-Star Game.

The North broke open a close game with a pair of third period goals – both by Edwardsville players – and rolled to the victory at the East Alton ice Arena.

Six of the seven North Division goals were scored by Edwardsville players. The other goal was scored by Alton’s Alex Rubin.

Marshal Gevers and Jon Weisner of Edwardsville each scored two goals and EHS teammates Devin Fleck and Drew Lewis each scored one goal.

“Our players loved this tonight,” said Edwardsville – and North Division – head coach Jason Walker. “It’s a lot of fun for them to get to play alongside all these other great players who they’ve been playing against all season.

“It’s a tough 18-game schedule and the All-Star Game is a nice break. Then it’s time to start the sec-ond season.”

Walker’s “second season” is the MVCHA playoffs, which begin Thursday. He served as the head coach of the North All-Stars because the Tigers finished first in the North regular-season standings.

“There were so many excellent players here tonight,” Walker said. “It was a really good game to watch.

“When you coach an All-Star team, it’s easy. Just send them out and let them play.”

The South broke out on top early in the first on a goal by Belleville West’s John Orelt, assisted by Zach Thompson of Belleville East at 13:45.

Weisner tied it at 1-1 late in the period when he pounced on a rebound in front of the net and scored unassisted at 1:33.

The North grabbed a 3-1 lead on bang-bang goals early in the second. Alton’s Rubin made it 2-1 at 14:01 with an unassisted goal and Weisner made it 3-1 at

13:12 off an assist from EHS teammate Cory Johnson. The South rallied to tie it 3-3 on goals by Zac

Jordan at 10:08 and Henry Hunsaker at 9:58.Lewis scored at 8:56 off assists from Marquette’s

Blake Varady and Alton’s Kain Henson to make it 4-3, but the South’s Alec Pellegrino of East scored off an assist from his brother Anthony to tie it 4-4 at 6:29.

Gevers then scored a pair of unanswered goals for the North. He scored off assists from Varady and Rubin at 3:00 of the second period, then made it 6-4 with an unassisted goal at 8:27 of the third. Fleck scored an insurance goal at 7:57 off an assist from Gevers.

The North, which outshot the South 35-26, also won the between-periods skills contests 4-3.

“It was a good, fun night,” Walker said. “We’ll enjoy this tonight, then it’s back to getting ready for the playoffs.”

EAST ALTON – West Division All-Star coach Corey Newgent was all for his players having fun at the annual Class 1A All-Star game.

He also wanted to win.Newgent, the Bethalto head coach, got half his

wish – the team had a memorable game. But the East Division All-Stars came away with a 6-4 vic-tory in front of a packed house at the East Alton ice Arena.

“It’s great to coach some of the great play-ers we’ve been playing against all season,” said Newgent, who coached his fifth All-Star Game. “The playoffs are right around the corner, but for one night, we’re all friendly.”

And while the hoopla, including between-peri-ods skills competitions, was indeed fun. Newgent was unhappy with the outcome.

“I wanted to win this game,” Newgent said. “It’s been a awhile since we’ve won the All-Star Game.”

He wanted to win so much, in fact, that he called a timeout late in the third period and later, he pulled his team’s goalie in favor of a sixth attacker.

“It didn’t work out, but you always play to win,” Newgent said.

The East All-Stars scored a come-from-behind victory, sparked by a pair of goals from Triad’s Joe Gruber. The West led 3-1 midway through the second period, but the East scored three unan-swered goals to take a 5-3 lead in the third.

“Both teams have plenty of talent,” Newgent said. “It was entertaining, I’m sure.”

The West got two goals from Bethalto’s Andrew Bond.

Jaconb Troxel of Highland put the West on

top early with a goal at 13:25 of the first period, assisted by Cole Ford of East Alton-Wood River and Stephen Sitze of Bethalto. The East countered with a goal of its own at 10:13 from Adam Gauch of Freeburg, assisted by Aaron Rogers and Kyle Culiberk of Triad.

The West took a 2-1 lead late in the first. Josh Harris of EA-WR scored from assists by Bond and Aaron Scott of Bethalto with 22.5 seconds remaining.

The West made it 3-1 at 9:21 of the second period when Bond scored off assists from Dallas Price of Bethalto and Harris.

Things were looking good for the West until 2:28 left in the second when Triad’s Parker Nesbitt pulled the East within a goal when he blasted a slap shot from just inside the blue line past West goalie Trevor Klostermann. He was assisted by Tyler Hinterser of Edwardsville and Aaron Rogers of Triad.

Then, with 48.9 seconds left in the second peri-od, Andrew Dunn of Edwardsville tied it for the East when he scored off assists from Collinsville’s Cory Bean and Triad’s Tim Faulkner.

It didn’t take the East long to take the led in the third period. Gruber scored at 13:35 to make it 4-3. He was assisted by Gauch and Cody Pees of Freeburg.

The West had a golden opportunity to tie it at 7:48 when Ford was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down on a breakaway. But East goalie Kyle Bray of Collinsville stopped Ford’s shot. Three minutes later, Gruber’s second goal, assisted by Faulkner and Dunn, made it 5-3.

“The save on the penalty shot was huge for them,” Newgent said. “If we score there, it’s tried

and we have momentum.”Bond’s second goal for the West at 3:32, assist-

ed by Harris and Bethalto’s Jeremy Heinemann, pulled the West stars back within a goal at 5-4. But Edwardsville’s Christian Trevino put the game out of reach with an insurance goal at 3:10, assisted by Edwardsville’s Tyler Hinterser and Gauch.

After a timeout by Newgent, the West applied pressure and even pulled goalie Josh Keister (of Bethalto), but couldn’t find the back of the net again.

The West All-Stars did win the skills competi-tion, winning three of the five contests.
