Thelittle girl is not going to grow uplike a normal child and she will beaffected by this for the rest of herlife. He has stolen her innocenceand he deserves to rot in jail,”echoed the protestors outside

court. The source further stated that thecase exposed complacency on thepart of authorities, neighboursand family members who mayhave known about the abuse andneglect of the child and associatedthe case to that of the Havensidetoddler, who’s grandmother andmother were charged with hermurder and rape in November2014.

Following the release of the national crime statistics which in-dicated that there has been an increase in murder, hijackingand rape, a Chatsworth mother is lucky to be alive after shewas allegedly beaten by her domestic worker, last Wednesday. Ragini Govender (39), a housewife, who is still traumatisedby the terrible ordeal, was continuously fisted, throttled, andthreatened with a knife after her domestic worker allegedlyforced her to hand over all her belongings including cash andjewellery, at her home in Damarosa Crescent in Moorton.Communications officer of the Chatsworth SAPS, Cpt CherylPillay, said that police are investigating a case of assault com-mon and robbery. The 23-year-old accused was arrested by police and will ap-pear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court soon.Govender’s distraught husband, Kevin (42) said that he ishappy that his wife is alive and that all praise should go to PTAlarms and the KZN inner South Crime Intelligence Unit fortheir swift response in apprehending the suspect. The drama unfolded after the domestic worker demanded forGovender to close her eyes and go upstairs.According to the shaken victim, all hell broke loose when she

questioned the domestic worker about her intentions and de-mands.“It was a normal working day and the domestic worker who isworking for us for a month asked my wife to come upstairsand close her eyes. My wife was curious as to why the do-mestic worker wanted her to close her eyes,” he said. “My wifetold her she will not close eyes. Suddenly, the domestic workerturned violent against my wife, assaulting her for no reason. She started fisting, slapping and pulling my wife’s hair and de-manded jewellery and cash,” he added.Kevin further explained that his wife was terrified for her lifeand told the domestic work that she had no cash or jewellerybut only her Thali string (sacred string married Hindu women).“She then pulled her downstairs and robbed my phone of herphone. She also took my daughter’s tablet. She then threw heron the lounge floor and locked the doors of the house and fled,” he said. Govender said within a few days, the Inner SouthCrime Intelligence and PT Alarms apprehended the suspect inUmbumbulu. “Crime in Chatsworth is getting out of hand andwe definitely need more police patrols in the area,” concludedKevin.
