THE BOYS AREBy Leah ShoemakerPioneer Staff
Next week, every boy graduating from high school is probably going to spend more time grooming him-self than he ever has before in his life.
When he steps into a room filled with hundreds of parents, teachers, peers and neigh-bours, every eye will be on him.
Maybe he won’t get quite as much attention as the girls in their colourful formal dresses, but for a mo-ment his mother is going to look at him and think that her baby is the most handsome boy in the room. His dad is going to remember himself at that age. And every girl who was “just a friend” is going to wonder why she never noticed his good looks.
So when you see these boys, in picture or in per-son, remember what they did to pre-
pare – someone had to show
them how to tie a tie. They rummaged through their drawers to find two black socks and a matching belt. They tucked in their shirts, cuffed their sleeves and ironed their collars.
They worked so hard to be standing in that new suit, ready to face the world.
• Steven McNeil of Invermere was in Calgary for a soccer trip when he found his suit. He went into Moores with his friend Robin Gadsby, who was also looking for something to wear for grad. Steven knew that he wanted a pinstriped suit and tried on about three, before settling on a black-and-white pinstriped Versace tailored suit. Underneath he will be wearing a blue dress shirt without a tie. “It’s ballin’,” said Steven when describing what the suit looked like. The suit had to be tailored quite a bit. “I’m kind of weird-shaped, I guess,” said Steven. In all, the experience went well and the suit was purchased for about $550.
• Robin Gadsby of Invermere hated the whole ex-perience of finding a suit. “For a tall skinny guy like me, it is hard to find a suit,” he said. While shopping
in Vancouver with his mom, Robin purchased a suit that he later returned because he didn’t like
the fit. He then went out again with Steven on their soccer trip and found a suit in the
same Moores shop. Robin will be wear-ing a black suit, with three buttons and a longer jacket. He originally purchased a black dress shirt and dark red tie and pocket handkerchief to match his part-ner’s dress. Later his partner changed her
mind and found a dark blue dress, so Robin is now on the hunt for a blue tie, shirt and handkerchief to match. The suit itself cost about $300.

Good Luck to all the Grads!
• Kyle McDermid of Invermere found the whole experience of getting a suit relatively easy. He found his suit at Moores in Calgary and it was the first one he tried on. “I tried on a couple of other jackets afterwards just to make sure,” said Kyle, but the first one was per-fect. The suit is charcoal grey with pinstripes. He will be wearing a textured white dress shirt underneath with a black and silver striped tie. The suit only needed a little hemming in the pants and cost about $700.
• Greig Helmer of Juniper Heights joked about how he came to find his suit for grad. “It was quite a hectic journey to get my suit. I slayed two dragons and had a few heroic battles, and now I am here with my gorgeous suit,” Grieg laughed. He tried on several suits in Calgary before deciding to order his suit through Sears. The suit itself is black-on-black pinstriped and his vest and tie, which were ordered on eBay, are silver. Greig used the home measuring system in the Sears catalogue to figure out what size to order, but when the suit came in it was too small. He returned the suit and received a different size in just a few days. The suit fits well and he is happy with the outcome. The cost was about $230.
• Erich Kohlweg of Fairmont tried on four or five different suits before settling on one. The problems he had with the suits were all in the fit. He did find one he liked at Le Chateau in Calgary. The suit is solid black with the jacket coming just below the hip. Un-derneath he will be wearing a dark blue shirt and a skinny black tie. Erich guessed he will probably be wearing a corsage as well. The pants and jacket came out to about $250.
• Kyle McKenzie from Invermere knew he wanted a white tux when he went searching for his grad wear.
He went to Moores in Calgary where there were only two white tuxes to choose from. The one he chose is pure white, with a black vest and tie and a white dress shirt underneath. He said from the moment he went in the doors to the moment he left, it only took about 45 minutes. “It was pretty easy,” explained Kyle. He is renting his tux and it should arrive a few days before the dinner and dance. The cost for the one-week rental is about $120.
• Charlie Smith of Invermere, like many other boys, rented his suit for grad. For Charlie the whole process was relatively simple. His suit was rented out of a store in Cranbrook. Charlie estimated that it took no longer than five minutes to be measured for his tuxedo. After the measuring was finished all he had to do was choose the style and colour he wanted from a Black & Lee catalogue.
The tux jacket falls at about the waist and is black along with the pants. Underneath he will be wearing a white dress shirt with matching beige tie and vest. “I have to match my partner’s dress,” said Charlie. Al-though he has not received the suit yet, Charlie isn’t worried because he can always get it tailored in the store. Renting the suit cost $140 and he will be return-ing it shortly after the dinner and dance.
