No. 13 seed BYU to host first two rounds of NCAA Tournament

PROVO, Utah – No. 13 seed BYU women’s volleyball will participate in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, hosting Princeton Friday night at the Smith Fieldhouse in the first round.

“I’m thrilled for the team to be able to play at home again in front of our great crowd,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said. “We’re excited to play Princeton in the first round. We’re familiar with both UNLV and Utah, but we’re focused on the Tigers.”

The Cougars (27-3, 16-2 West Coast Conference) will play against Princeton in the first round and the winner will compete against the winner of the match between Utah and UNLV. BYU and Princeton will play Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. MST with Utah and UNLV facing off right before at 5 p.m. MST on Elaine Michaelis Court. The winners of each match will play Saturday at 7 p.m. MST in the second round.

BYU, Princeton, Utah and UNLV are part of the Texas Region. Saturday’s winner will advance to the regional semifinals on Dec. 9 at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Cougars are the No. 13 seed in the tournament for the second-straight season. The last time BYU played in the NCAA tournament was in 2015, when they advanced to the regional semifinals for the fourth-straight season.

Princeton• Princeton is 19-4 on the season and finished 13-1 in the Ivy League Conference.• BYU is a perfect 3-0 against the Tigers all-time, last winning in a neutral-site sweep in 2012.• Princeton last participated in the NCAA tournament in 2007. This is the program’s sixth time making

the tournament.• The Tigersn are led by 3.76 kills per set from Cara Mattaliano, Jessie Harris’ 10.52 assist average,

3.71 digs per set from Kelly Matthews and Brittany Ptak’s 0.79 blocks per set.

Utah• Utah is 20-11 on the year and carrys an 11-9 Pac-12 Conference record.• The Utes beat the Cougars at the Smith Fieldhouse in five sets earlier this year, but BYU holds a

69-30 record in the all-time series.• Utah is led by Adora Anae’s 4.68 kills per set, 7.17 assists per set from Bailey Choy, Anae’s 3.23

digs per set and Berkeley Oblad’s 0.94 blocks per set.

UNLV• UNLV is 23-7 overall and finished 12-6 in the Mountain West Conference.• BYU leads the overall series history 28-6, including getting a sweep at home against the Rebels

BYU women’s volleyball head coach Heather Olmstead announced the hiring of Jonny Neeley in February 2016.

Prior to joining the team, Neeley spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the Univer-sity of Arkansas-Fort Smith.

In 2015, Neeley helped coach UAFS to a school-record 28-straight wins. The season included a conference championship, regional championship and a second-consecutive trip to the regional finals of the Division II NCAA Tournament.

Before that in 2014, Neeley helped coach the Lions to their best season in program history

Heather Olmstead was named the head coach of the Cougars in 2015, where she led the team to a 28-4, (16-2 WCC) season where they won an outright conference title and advanced to the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament for the fourth-straight year.

In January of 2014, Olmstead was named the associate head coach of BYU women’s volley-ball. During the year, she helped coach the Cougars to perhaps their most successful season to date. BYU went 30-5 on the season, winning an out-right West Coast Conference title, before advancing to the national championship match of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. Chelsea Nitta joined BYU women’s volleyball as the technical assistant to start the 2015 season.

She previously served as a graduate assistant for the squad in 2012.

From 2008-10 she was a team manager for the team.

Nitta coordinates statistics and video for the team.

She hails from Las Vegas, Nev., and gradu-ated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2010.

Dan Graham received a BS in Physical Education with an emphasis in athletic training from BYU in 2000. He later received an MS in athletic training from BYU in 2004.

Graham began his athletic training career at the MTC where he was an athletic trainer from 2000-05. He later took his talets to the BYU Track & Field and Cross Country teams for the 2001-02 season.

After a two-year stint as the BYU men’s la-crosse head athletic trainer, Graham became an intern athletic trainer for BYU football from 2005-06.

The 2014 campaign saw UAFS finish first in the nation in digs per set with 21.71. Additionally, during that season Neeley coached two All-Americans: Michelle Walker and Jessica Anderson.

During his two years at UAFS, the Lions amassed an overall record of 58-9.

Before joining the UAFS coaching staff, Neeley spent three years coaching club and school volleyball in Russellville, Arkansas. He led his school team to its first-ever conference championship and an overall three-year record of 86-15.

Neeley has coached competitive club and school volleyball in California, Utah and most recently Arkansas. While coaching in Utah, Neeley helped lead Pleas-ant Grove High School to two-consecutive state finals, winning the champion-ship in 2009.

Neeley is a BYU graduate, who received his Bachelor of Science degree in coaching/teaching physical education in 2011.

Georgia to become the Track & Field/Cross Country athletic trainer at the Univer-sity of Georgia from 2006-10.

Graham then returned home to the Cougars to become the women’s volleyball/track & field athletic trainer.

He is married to the former Shelley Tuckfield and has four children.

Additionally, he coached three AVCA All-Americans in 2014: Jennifer Hamson, Alexa Gray and Amy Boswell.

Before coming to BYU, Hyte served as an assistant women’s volleyball coach for two seasons at Houston from 2012-13. Before that, he served as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Idaho State from 2008-12.

Hyte began his volleyball career playing at Green Valley High School in Las Vegas where he earned the Offensive Award.

From there, he went on to play volleyball at Utah Valley from 2000-02. During his time at UVU, Hyte helped lead his team to the 2001 NIRSA National Champi-onship. A year later he helped his team advance to the 2002 NIRSA National Championship match.

Hyte later transfered to BYU where he played volleyball from 2002-04. He con-tributed as a member of the 2004 NCAA Championship team at BYU and 2003 NCAA Runner-Up team.

In 2013, she helped coach the Cougars to a 24-7 (15-3 WCC) season where they advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA tournament for a second-con-secutive year. During that season she coached an All-American, Alexa Gray.

In 2012, Olmstead helped coach the Cougars to their first conference title since 2005, their best record since 1998 at 28-4 and a finish in the round of 16 at the NCAA tournament, the team’s first showing at the tournament since 2007.

During that same year she coached four All-Americans, including AVCA first teamer Jennifer Hamson.

Olmstead helped coach the Cougars to 21-9 (10-6 WCC) season in 2011. She helped the team to a third-place finish in BYU’s first season in the West Coast Conference.

In 2011, she coached players with three all-conference honors, three academ-ic all-conference honors, one all-region accolade and one AVCA All-America citation.

Before arriving at BYU, she was an assistant coach at Utah from 2006-10, after serving as an assistant at her alma mater Utah State from 2003-05. Additionally, Heather was the head coach of the Intermountain Volleyball Association High Performance team in 2006 as well as the 2010 IVA HP Select Team in Florida.
