Canfield, OH– Project Spotlight: Sawmill Creek Drainage Improvements

The City of Canfield received $1,162,400 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Funding from FEMA, with

$145,000 coming from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency in order to address flooding

along portions of Sawmill Creek. This phased project will address flooding by upsizing pipe sizes,

and adding detention areas along the creek.

Did you know that for only $30.00

a year the Canfield Rotary Club

will place a flag in your front yard

for the six (6) holidays and remove

it after the holiday: Memorial Day,

Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor

Day, Patriot Day, and Veteran’s

Day.

How it Works:

• A plastic pipe is buried in your yard

permanently, flush with the ground to hold the flagstaff in place

• A plastic cap will over the pipe when

not in use

• A 3’ x 5’ flagon a 10’ staff will be

place in the holder.

When Mike Tyson was asked

by a reporter whether he was

worried about Evander Holy-

field and his fight plan he

answered; “Everyone has a

plan until they get punched

in the mouth.” This quote

adequately applies to the

reality that we have all been

faced with in 2020. The

COVID-19 pandemic was a

collective “punch in the

mouth” to anyone who

planned to do anything this

year. The City of Canfield

was not immune to the dis-

ruptions caused by the pan-

demic and associated re-

strictions, nevertheless we

were able to adapt and make

appropriate adjustments in

order to continue to provide

services to our citizens with

relatively little disturbance.

Thank you to all the residents

that have also adjusted to

our “new normal” of virtual

public meetings, public ac-

cess restrictions, and being

patient as we navigated how to

operate during the pandemic.

As an organization we will con-

tinue to adapt and enhance

our operations in order to pro-

vide the most effective and

efficient service delivery to our

citizens.

Stay strong and be safe, we will

all get through this together.

As the Canfield Police Department proceeds through day to day opera-

tions, please know we stand united as a professional police department

and come from different ethnicities, social economic backgrounds and

even countries of origin. 2020 has taught us many lessons either from the

global pandemic or the social unrest. Our department, while working

together with our community, is committed to taking action in becoming

part of the solution in facing social injustice and prejudice. To those who

have been impacted by social injustice or prejudice and are hurting or

feeling pain over current events, please know the Canfield Police Depart-

ment is composed of wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers

and members of a community and we stand with you. Police Officers

wear a badge, that badge does not shield us from sadness or shock of

misconduct. Together, we will become a stronger community and nation.

Question: Does the City provide leaf pickup services? -Tom Jones (E. Main St.)

Answer: Hi Tom, Yes, The City of Canfield provides leaf collection as a service to our citi-

zens. Beginning October 1st City Crews will conduct daily sweeps through the City in order

to collect leaves that residents place at the curb. Please remember that this is for leaves

only and you shouldn’t rake grass, twigs, roots, and other debris with you leaves , as it will

damage our leaf vacuum. More information about leaf collection can be found on our beau-

tiful City website at www.canfield.gov.

City of Canfield Public Works Crews will be conducting our Annual Hy-

drant Flushing through the month of September and the first week of

October. Annual hydrant flushing is done as part of ongoing mainte-

nance of the City of Canfield Water System to ensure hydrants are in

working order and to remove mineral deposits that may accumulate in

the water distribution system.

Why does the City perform hydrant flushing?

Hydrant flushing is the quick release of water from fire

hydrants. It’s a controlled procedure that is vital to the

general maintenance of the City’s water distribution sys-

tem. It ensures adequate water flow is available to fire

fighters, residents and businesses. It also helps maintain

the City’s water clarity and quality by clearing iron and

mineral deposits from the water mains (distribution pipes).

What are the effects of hydrant flushing?

Hydrant flushing helps ensure water quality and helps

avoid random bouts of rusty water if there is a high de-

mand for water, such as a major firefighting effort or high

usage during a sustained drought.

Sometimes hydrant flushing can make makes the water

temporarily appear rust-colored because the iron and

mineral deposits in the water get stirred up.
