The mid year meeting which took place Santa Fe, New Mexico was a great success. The program was informative, the participation from the meeting attendees was fantastic and the location and weather were ideal! Chair, Gary W. Dryden (Business and Finance Administration), University of Louisville welcomed the group to the meeting, which was focused on the Offsite Clinical Education theme.

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Our keynote speaker, Howard L. Bailit, University of Connecticut provided an engaging presentation on the Impact of Community Education on School Finances.

Micaela Gibbs, Boyd Robinson and Ken A. Tomlinson all from the University of Florida presented Financial Modeling of Community Outreach. They described the numerous educational, financial and operational complexities in administering and implementing successful extramural clinical education experiences.

William W. Dodge, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio discussed the Balance between Intramural and Extramural Training.

Wilhelm A. Piskorowski of the University of Michigan’s presentation on Establishing Your Community Outreach Initiatives was comprehensive and exciting. While carefully measuring the financial impact of community outreach programs, the impact on the students’ education, professional development and sense of civic responsibility was clearly communicated.

Teaching “business practices” in the pre-doctoral clinics.

Economic downturn effects on the overall school budgets and specific areas targeted for reduction.

Incentives for increased student productivity.

How to identify, measure, track and manage faculty production.

“Requirements”/ “Expectations” / “Experiences” for student clinical activity.

Faculty Workload: Tenure vs. Non-Tenure Track

Ideas for adding additional funds to the dental school & cost control initiatives
