Our lives are filled with many blessings. Truly, they are all around us. And what greater blessing is there than the opportunity to serve kids? This blessing of service inspires all of us Scouters to give Scouts what they really deserve – our very best!
Scouts deserve a quality, fun-filled program, a safe environment in which to grow and learn. They deserve an opportunity to experience new things, and to learn about a world bigger than themselves. They deserve the chance to advance and be recognized for their achievements. Scouts deserve an opportunity to lead, to follow, to serve, to dream big dreams and to find great adventures. They deserve to make lasting friend-ships and to have a warm, caring place in which to belong. They deserve the privilege of having role models whom they can look up to and emulate.
In short, our precious Scouts need adult leaders who can give them all they deserve – leaders who will go to training and will wear their uniform with pride. Now is the season to recruit youth and equally important, to recruit the quality leaders who willingly embrace the blessing and privilege of serving kids. In that spirit, I urge us all to recruit only the best. Let’s carefully and confidently select those who meet that highest of standards. After all, that is exactly what our Scouts deserve.
Thanks for helping kids! Barry NorrisScout Executive(216) 458-8910

TM: When did you join Scouting and when did you earn your Eagle Scout Award? It seemed it was a foregone conclusion as all the boys were in Cub Scouts. I joined Pack 165 at Gates Mills Elementary
School. My mom was a Den mom. My dad was a Pack leader and when I joined the troop at the Methodist Church, he was an Assistant Scoutmaster and eventually Scoutmaster. My Eagle Court of Honor was April 23, 1968. I was 13 years old. It was one of the most memorable days of my life. I was a member of the troop all through high school.
TM: What did you enjoy most about Scouting? As an only child, I enjoyed my friends in the troop and always having something to do in Scouting. Once I earned a badge or a rank, I was looking at the requirements for the next badge or rank. I ended
up earning a Gold Palm (31 merit badges). I was very goal oriented and Scouting helped foster that mindset. I’m not really sure which came first, but Scouting certainly honed my desire to achieve. Camping was my favorite activity in Scouting. It didn’t matter if it was raining, snowing or really hot. I loved being out in the woods camping. We camped at Clendening and Beaumont. Our default
“camp” was land in Gates Mills. We went to summer camp at Camp Merz which on the western shore of Lake Chautauqua in Jamestown, New York. I also went to Tinnerman Canoe Base twice. TM: What was your favorite merit badge? Least favorite? The Pioneering Merit Badge was my favorite. I liked reading and learning about all of the requirements and then to physically notch, chop and lash all the pieces and parts of the logs to build a tower or a
bridge. It was very cool to be accomplishing that when I was 11 or 12 years old. And since I liked camping, I was always using and perfecting those skills. My hardest merit badges were swimming and lifesaving. I had a bad experience in the water when I was younger and that “fear” was always there. Needless to say, I was able to overcome it because I
wanted to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. After I earned my Lifesaving Merit Badge, I became a life guard! TM: What was your Eagle Scout project?I worked with children who were at Rainbow Children’s Hospital on Green Road. I helped them build models, played games with them and read to the younger kids. I would spend a few hours with them
every Saturday morning. I got to know the kids and think I added some sense of normalcy to their lives. Unfortunately, one of the boys died from his illness. His death really affected me and impressed upon me how fragile life really is. I continued volunteering there for years after my Eagle Project. I liked giving something back to the kids, but there was more to it than that. They gave something back to me, too.
TM: Do you have a favorite Scouting memory? Our attendance at our second camporee would have to be a favorite. At our first camporee, it was all new and we didn’t quite know what to expect and our performance proved that. Our troop, which was
by far the smallest (25 boy at the time) decided that there was no reason why we couldn’t win it, so we set goals at the end of that first camporee. We followed the Scout Motto and prepared all year long for the various competitions. We each had specific job and were experts at them by the time the next camporee rolled around. I’ll never forget using the Sparky Bear Fire Starter that we bought from “Boys Life” magazine … we started our fire in 6 seconds! We set up a teepee instead of a tent. And we won the whole competition!
TM: How has being an Eagle Scout affected your career?Achieving Eagle Scout was one of the first real, tangible results I remember that came from setting goals and following a plan. It proved to me that if you want something bad enough, you can achieve it. It
also taught me that you can’t take shortcuts and expect any real results. I am very proud to be an Eagle Scout. I have my certificate in my office, have Eagle Scout license plates and told the interview committee that I was an Eagle Scout even though I earned it 45 years ago! It was, and is still, very important to me.
TM: Can you offer a challenge to our Scouts that will benefit them in their future? I would challenge them to do more than is expected of them, to give back and to pass on the Scout Oath and Law to employees and colleagues. You can do a lot on a small level. We are not average guys.
Earning the Eagle Scout Award is not an end. It is our jumping off point. TM: Any random thoughts about Scouting?I really wish Scouting was more important to today’s families instead of sports. Don’t get me wrong, I love sports, but Scouting adds an important component to life. Scouting was the constant in my life.
It helped me become an independent thinker while still being a member of the troop. It instilled in me my drive to achieve. Scouting gives you more than team sports do because it combines all of the best virtues of a team sport with the values of a fraternal organization.

THOUGHTS FROM A PARENT TO A CHILDIt’sYourmove...I gave you life, but I cannot live it for you.I can teach you things, but I cannot make you learn.I can give you directions, but I cannot always be there to lead you.I can allow you freedom, but I cannot account for it.
I can take you to church, but I cannot make you believe.I can teach you right from wrong, but I cannot always decide for you.I can buy you beautiful clothes, but I cannot make you beautiful inside.
I can offer you advice, but I cannot accept it for you.I can give you love, but I cannot force it upon you.I can teach you to share, but I cannot make you unselfish.I can teach you respect, but I cannot force you to show honor.
I can advise you about friends, but I cannot choose them for you.I can advise you about sex, but I cannot keep you pure.I can tell you the facts of life, but I cannot build your reputation.
I can tell you about alcohol, but I cannot say no for you.I can warn you about drugs, but I cannot prevent you from using them.I can tell you about lofty goals, but I cannot achieve them for you.I can teach you kindness, but I cannot force you to be gracious.
I can warn you about sin, but I cannot make your morals.I can love you as a child, but I cannot place you in God’s family.I can pray for you, but I cannot make you walk with God.
I can teach you about Jesus, but I cannot make Him your Saviour.I can tell you how to live, but I cannot give you eternal life.
