The Wednesday night event will be a Western Chic-themed dinner. Plan to wear your fancy cowboy and cowgirl duds. Thursday will feature opportunities to meet the authors (see below) and have them autograph their books, plus fashion boutiques and a fabulous silent auction.
For you, your friends, and your neighbors, the Book & Author Events are not to be missed. All these happenings provide you with an opportunity to connect with Brandeis’ students and faculty by supporting them philanthropically. Tess Gerritsen, as a practicing physician, began a writing career with romance novels, but found her true niche with Harvest, a medical thriller. That was followed by The Surgeon and 10 more books that have teamed Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli and Medical Examiner Maura Isles, who are featured on the TNT television drama bearing their names.
Lesley Poling-Kempes’ latest book, Ladies of the Canyons: A League of Extraordinary Women and Their Adventures in the American Southwest, tells the remarkable stories of women who a century ago loved and lived upon the same landscape the author calls home.
David O. Stewart, a lawyer who has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, has written award-winning biographies of the Founding Fathers, the latest being Madison’s Gift: Five Partnerships That Built America. Most recently, Stewart has turned to historical fiction with The Lincoln Deception and The Wilson Deception.
Arlene Weintraub is an award-winning journalist and author with 20 years experience writing about health care, pharmaceuticals, and technology. Her first book, Selling the Fountain of Youth, is an exposé of the anti-aging industry. Her latest is Heal: The Vital Role of Dogs in the Search for Cancer Cures.
Warren Bodow, our Moderator, retired in 2005 as president of New York City radio stations WQXR and WQEW, moved to Tucson, and became an active Brandeis member. Since then, he has written four plays, three of which have been staged in NYC and beyond.

Social Justice/
Community ServiceThe Tucson chapter gives back to our community.Marilyn Lobell, our Community Service Chairman,
reminds us of the organizations we are supporting this year:
The Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse is in need
of hotel toiletries and personal-care items. They also need NEW socks and underwear for children, teens, and women.
Youth On Their Own (YOTO) is an organization that
supports high school graduation of homeless youth by
providing financial assistance, basic human needs, and guidance. They always need teen hygiene products and school supplies.
Books From Mom is a program that gives new and gently
used children’s books to women in prison so they can read
to their visiting offspring.Brandeis is always looking for new ways to help our
community. If you have a way to help or wish to make a donation, contact Marilyn Lobell, [email protected], 615-0877, or Arlene Gray, [email protected] , 229-0006.

If you are ever in the mood for ethnic lunches with interesting Brandeis members, consider our “Ethnic Lunch” Study Group. Explore ethnic restaurants, learn their histories, sample a variety of cuisines, and meet one of the leaders, Marcia Winick.
Marcia was born and grew up in the Bronx, New York, and is a graduate of Walton High School and New York University. She was a mathematics major and began a career in computer programming when that field was in its infancy.
While playing bridge in the Catskills, Marcia met her future husband, Irving. They were paired as bridge partners. She bid one no trump, he bid six no trump, and they made it!
Marcia and Irv married in 1963 and moved to Tucson for the weather with eight-year-old son Jon and 11-year-old daughter Pam in 1977. Marcia worked for Tucson Electric for a time and then for the University of Arizona. Now, Jon is a financial planner in California and Pam is a physical therapist in Philadelphia and has two children. Marcia is a dog lover, having Keeshonds for over thirty years.
Brandeis is perfect for Marcia. She is a book lover, enjoying the “Mystery Book Club,” and credits Sorkey Fortman for great leadership. She is also a great fan of our Book & Author events. Marcia has given helpful advice to Meg Sivitz regarding our book business. She also attends Rabbi Cohon’s sefer book club.
As a valuable Brandeis volunteer for at least ten years, Marcia has volunteered at the Brandeis Book Sale and worked with The National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, Friends of the Library, and the Reid Park Zoo.
She loves to travel and has souvenirs and memories form Kenya, Peru, Thailand, the Panama Canal, and Costa Rica.

On January 7, the Tucson Chapter had a very successful University on Wheels event featuring Brandeis University Professor and Chairman of
the American Studies Program Thomas “Tom” Doherty speaking on “Jews, Nazis, and Hollywood Cinema, 1933 to 1939.”
Professor Doherty talked about the economic considerations, religious worries, and federal security considerations that led to the various movie studios’ decisions about their filming facilities in Germany, film sales to Germany, and the lack of any anti-Nazi content until the outbreak of World War II. His discussion was so intriguing to the large audience that, when the question-and-answer period came, some people preferred he go on with his lecture, but he took questions anyway.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg delivered words of praise at Brandeis University in January for the school’s namesake, telling more than 2,500 people that longtime Associate Justice Louis D. Brandeis had “an ability to combine a dedication to judicial restraint with a readiness to defend civil rights and liberties.”
Ginsburg delivered her remarks at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center during a panel discussion titled “Louis D. Brandeis, the Supreme Court and American Democracy.” It was part
of the school’s semester-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of Brandeis’ nomination to the high court in 1916.The first Jewish Supreme Court justice, Brandeis served on the court for 23 years.Ginsburg, revered on the left as a progressive hero and reviled by many conservatives as an activist judge, said
Brandeis, a well-known public-interest lawyer before his tenure on the bench, “was quite explicit about the need to control corporations.”
She praised his rigorous, fact-based approach to drafting briefs as a lawyer while always remaining cognizant of the real-world implications of the law.
Brandeis served on the high court from June 1916 to February 1939. He died in 1941 at the age of 84. His notable opinions include his 1928 dissent in Olmstead v. United States, which dealt with early wiretapping technology, and one the year before in Whitney v. California, which held that fear of serious injury alone could not justify the suppression of free speech and assembly.
