As most of you know, the past couple of months have been difficult for me and my family, to say the least. My mom passed away in September and two months later my husband of 31 years, Frank Arnold, died. I don't want to write about death and dying, and yet something light and casual isn't in my heart or my fingertips. First, I want to thank all of you who have expressed care and condolences. We tend to think that words aren't enough at times like these, and yet I find them more comforting than I would have imagined. I have been surrounded by love and support from my sisters in Mountain Meadow Quilters, and it is enormously helpful. I am reflecting on what gets us through the hard times. The reality is that we all have faced them or will at some point. For me, it's my family and friends; it's getting up in the morning and putting one foot in front of the other and breathing; it's thanking those loved ones that are no longer with me for their gifts while they were here; and it's knowing that the three dogs in my house- hold expect feeding and walking. Just before my husband came home from the hospital last week, I went to Wild Birds Unlimited to get a feeder I could hang in a spot where he could see it. While there, I also bought an engraved rock saying: "Breathe". I now have it on my kitchen windowsill where I look at it periodically and remind myself to do just that. I have noticed that these letters also contain other life-sustaining words: eat, bathe, heart, beat — all things we need to stay whole and healthy. (If you find other words within, please let me know.) I'm almost ready to resume some sewing and look forward to picking up the rotary cutter again. November Program: June Jaeger

June Jaeger, quilter, teacher, and quilt pattern designer from Prineville, presented a trunk show of family quilts and quilts from her own designs at our November 10 business meeting. Many members of MMQ have taken classes with or from June and it was a pleasure to see her quilts. June noted that there is a long history of quiltmaking in her family and she showed several of those quilts. In earlier generations, every quilt was made for a purpose. One quilt June shared was made by her great-great-grandmother in the 1800s; the colors today ap-peared to be mostly a faded peach, but in fact the fabrics were originally all reds. Only the Turkey red fabric is still red. June also showed several of her own quilts, including quilts made from patterns she has designed. Her quilt designs feature wildlife, landscapes and western themes. Perhaps the most breathtaking quilt she showed was a large quilt featuring a stampede of horses and made from thousands of tiny pieces of fabric. Other quilts she brought included “Nature’s Sampler” (one of her own patterns) and class samples from her “Best Friends” class. She also showed the raffle quilt for the 2010 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. You can find (and purchase) June’s patterns at her website, logcabinquiltworks.com and at the Stitchin’ Post. June shared her quilt-laundering method: She folds the quilt accordion style, and she places it in the bathtub and covers it with about 8” of cool water and a couple of capfuls of Orvis soap. She squishes the soapy water into the quilt and lets it sit for 20 minutes. Then she rolls it over and squishes it again. She drains the tub and repeats the process to get out all the soap. Then, with help from a friend, she carries the quilt outside, puts a white sheet down on the grass, puts the quilt down on top of the sheet, puts another white sheet on top of the quilt, and leaves the quilt there to dry. She does this only in warm weather.

Block of the Month - January 2010

Judy Johnson will continue her October 27 presentation on

tips and techniques using stacked layers of fabric. Judy’s

presentation will be at 9 am on January 12 at Holy Trinity

Catholic Church.

OCTOBER BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Judy Johnson presented her method for creating blocks from

identical stacked layers of fabric and showed a number of

quilts made from one piece of fabric using this method. Judy

recommends using a fabric with a larger repeat (e.g., 24”); the

smaller the repeat, the less variety you will get in your blocks.

She identified several essential tools for cutting stacked lay-

ers of fabric: a large cutting mat; a large rotary cutter (60

mm is best) with a sharp blade; flower-head pins; cut-up eras-

ers (she sticks the pins through the fabric layers into a bit of

eraser to keep the layers from slipping); and a bandaid! An-

other tip: when cutting layers that are pinned together, make

sure your rotary cutter doesn’t cross a pin; if so, you’ve made

a $7.50 mistake.

Come to the January 12 meeting at 9 am to see Part 2 of

Judy’s presentation on her stacked layers quilts.

October Education Meeting: Machine Quilting

In the final installment of the outstanding “Bag of Tricks” series of

education workshops, four MMQ members shared their

machine quilting tips. Among the many excellent tips are the fol-

lowing: Virlene Arnold uses Sew Fine polyester thread from Su-

perior Threads in her bobbin when she uses metallic thread in the

needle; also when using metallic thread, she lowers the upper ten-

sion. Virlene recommends making a sample when getting started

on a machine quilting project. Pat Pease likes to use basting sprays

and water soluble thread for basting instead of pins. Two brands of

basting sprays she likes are Sulky KK 2000 and 505 Spray & Fix

(which is acid-free); Pat reminded us to read the directions on the

can and work in a well-ventilated room when using these product.

Pat also likes YLI Wash Away Thread for basting; after the ma-

chine quilting is completed, this water-soluble thread can be re-

moved either by washing or by spraying the quilt with water. Be-

cause this thread is water soluble, it is essential that it be kept in a

plastic bag when not in use.

Wendy Hill said she is “waging war” on dull needles. She changes

her needle every 3-4 hours of sewing. Wendy doesn’t enjoy free-

motion quilting and prefers to machine quilt using a walking foot

with the feed dogs engaged. She uses freezer-paper templates to

machine-quilt circles, which she does with her walking foot. Fi-

nally, Wendy said that she tries to sew first thing every day. As she

said, if you do what you have to do first, you may never get to your

quilting. Sheila Finzer gave a step-by-step demonstration of her

“Getting Started Checklist,” which included such excellent tips as

“Remove shoes. It is easier to ‘feel’ the speed of your machine

without shoes.” and “Keep a small flashlight next to your sewing

machine so you can see underneath your quilt sandwich without

taking it off the machine.”

Virlene, Pat, Wendy and Sheila provided excellent handouts that

are sure to help us all be more successful machine quilters.

EDUCATION MEETINGS IN 2010

All Mountain Meadow Quilters education meetings

(fourth Tuesday of the month) will be held at Cascade

Bible Church in La Pine.

Page 7: Volume 16 Issue 11 December 2009 - Mountain Meadow …Volume 16 Issue 11 December 2009 Our Mission Mountain Meadow Quilters will endeavor to provide fellowship, education and enjoyment

Highlights of October 27 Board Meeting

The Mountain Meadow Quilters Board meeting was

called to order on October 27th at Cascade Bible

Church at noon by Virlene Arnold.

The minutes of the last board meeting on August 11th

were approved.

Cate Brooks gave the treasurer’s report and presented

the third-quarter report of income and expenses.

There was a discussion about the guild applying for

501c3 status with the IRS, so we can take tax deduc-

tions for donations to the guild. Pat Hensley and Mary

Lou Kreiss will look into it and report back to the board.

Mary Lou will have new membership forms for 2010

available in December. She also asked if you have

email or address changes to let her know.

It was suggested that it would be good to have a pro-

gram in 2010 on the history of the guild. The education

and programs chairmen will get together to discuss

next year’s programs.

New Business:

There was a discussion on how best to make new mem-

bers welcome. Suggestions were a big sister, introduc-

ing them with more of a profile at the meeting, a special

name tag that other members would know they were

new, or a picture on our board.

The board discussed the best way to notify members

when a meeting is cancelled at the last minute. Possi-

bilities included email messages or an announcement

on local television.

We do not know yet if the mall will be available in 2010

for our quilt show. If so, we hope to have it on August

7. The board decided that 30% of the bazaar sales

would go to help pay for the costs of our retreat.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Doris Samac, Secretary

Highlights of November 10th Meeting

The regular meeting of the Mountain Meadow Quilters was

called to order by Co-Chair Virlene Arnold on November

10th at 10 a.m.

The hospitality co-chair thanked everyone who brought

refreshments. We had one visitor.

Thinking of You: Virlene said that her husband was in the

hospital with pneumonia. (He later passed away.)

Announcements:

Pat Hensley said the newsletter deadline is November 17.

She will mail the newsletter this month to those who re-

ceive a hard copy.

Bev Runner announced that the appliqué group will meet

at Lillian Arnold’s house Tuesday November 17th at 9:30

am.

Jane Croley said the Christmas luncheon will be very spe-

longs to the membership. This might include coffee sup-

plies, ironing boards, quilt show signs or records for an

office you hold or used to hold. Once we have a list we will

Care and Share 2009 Care and Share is a community based organization sponsored by the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Sunriver Christian Fel-lowship Outreach committees. They provide up to 25 pounds of food and supplies to between 180 and 200 families in the 97707 and 97739 (Three Rivers and LaPine) zip codes on the last Friday of each month. They provide the same service in November but on the Friday before Thanksgiving. Care and Share and the community wide groups assist with and distribute special contributions and gifts to needy families in a special December program that delivers food and gifts to each home that requests assistance. The distribution is done by an all volunteer group that can always use help. If you are interested please call Marlene Guasco at 598-6595 or Sandy Young at 598-9020. Financial and volunteer assistance is provided through Neighbor Impact; Deschutes County Food Bank; The Sunriver Rotary Club; Holy Trinity Catholic Church; Sunriver Christian Fellowship; The Sunriver Women’s Club; the Sunriver Owners Association and other community groups. Many groups contribute products as their special programs for community service. The Sunriver Women’s club has a soap pro-ject; Sunriver Christian Fellowship provides special funding for fresh fruits and vegetables; and the Mountain Meadow Quilters provide toilet paper. Individual contribution needs are listed on a special bulletin board at the Holy Trinity Church. All individual contributions are welcome and may be placed on the wire rack in the back hall of Holy Trinity Church/Sunriver Christian Fellowship in Sun-river. Thank you for your contribution of 12 rolls of toilet paper during

your birthday month. Please bring your contribution to Holy

Trinity Catholic Church at the second Tuesday meeting or drop it

off on the wire racks in the back hallway. There is a great need in

our South County area and our small contribution is much appre-

ciated.

2011 Retreat Planning Underway

Mountain Meadow Quilters has a committee of 12 working to plan a

quilters’ retreat for the spring of 2011. Co-chairs Linda Saukkonen

and Crys Kyle have met several times with the committee, which

has done a survey with the membership regarding their ideas for

the retreat. Retreat committee members Pat Hensley and Linda

visited several local venues for the retreat and the retreat commit-

tee has made a field trip to the Inn of the Seventh Mountain Con-

ference Center.

In the next several months, the committee will be selecting teach-

ers for the retreat and getting further input from the membership.

At guild meetings, Crys and Linda will give regular updates as the

planning continues.

The Retreat Committee will meet on January 12, 2010, at Linda’s

home right after the regular MMQ meeting. This will be a luncheon

meeting and topics will include feedback from the field trip and

methods of selecting retreat teachers.

MMQ Guild has had two previous retreats, one at Five Pine Resort in

2008 and the first one at Rock Springs Guest Resort in 2006.

The previous retreats have featured local quilting teachers and in-

structors from California and Canada. The committee has made a

concerted effort to address both traditional quilting and art quilting.

The retreat lasts three days and includes overnight accommoda-

tions, meals, and class instructors. The purpose of the retreat is to

find a way for members to bond with one another while learning

new quilting techniques.

A date for the retreat will be chosen after the teachers have been

selected.

November Block of the Month: Crys Kyle

For our November Block of the Month Session, Crys Kyle

shared her tips for using two special rulers to make the card

trick block in a variety of sizes. Her version of this familiar

block is made with half-square and quarter-square triangles.

Crys loves rulers and she showed how easy and accurate it is

to make these block components with two rulers: the Omni-

grid 96 (half-square triangles) and the Omnigrid 98 (quarter-

square triangles). She also provided the conversion charts

she has developed; for any size block, they tell you the width

of fabric strip to cut and the line on the ruler to use. What a

great resource! One member complimented Crys on her per-

fect points; her response: “the points are good because those

rulers are great.”
