Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

So how was the millennium year for you? After all the hysteria about the millennium bug

and the turn of the century which dominated themedia agenda 12 months ago, the paranoia is overand it's fair to say that 2000 was probably a prettynormal year.

In most corners of the world, it was business asusual (save for America which discovered that evenif you consider yourself to be the template fordemocracy, there are still a few things you need tolearn...).

However, there was most certainly a differentflavour to the industries Music & Media covers and asense that changes were both taking place and accel-erating in pace.

Look at the music industry. Amid the MP3.comand Napster crisis, 2000 saw all the majors finallyentering the digital download arena, initially quite

timidly, but the movement has started and there willbe no turning back now.

Then there was the structural transformation ofthe music industry, with alliances forged between theold and the new economy, as exemplified by theAOL/Time Warner merger, the creation of VivendiUniversal, and the deal between Bertelsmann andNapster. Rarely has an industry been reshaped insuch a short lapse of time. And it's not over yet.

Look at the radio industry, where digital conver-gence is the plat du jour. Whether they want it ornot, traditional broadcasters are moving into the dig-ital area with a vengeance, where they are encoun-tering new players determinedto give them a run for theirmoney.

All this is very healthy-howcan you be complacent when theworld around you is changing? And very exciting, too-whenwas the last time you were at thecentre of a revolution?

There are probably worst waysto celebrate the millennium.

More new talent at revamped Victoiresby Marie -Agnes Bruneau

PARIS - The 2001 Victoires de laMusique awards will include a sig-nificant number of changes, includ-ing a greater emphasis on new tal-ent.

The 16th edition of the Frenchindustry's official music awardswill be broadcast live on public TVchannel France 2 onFebruary 17.

Four new categorieshave been created, withtwo specifically dedicat-ed to highlighting newtalent. They are 'BestLive New Talent,' forwhich the artist musthave performed at least20 live concerts in threedifferent areas of France to beeligible, and 'Best Album By ANew Act Talent,' for which a mini-mum sales level of 50,000 units isrequired.

The two other new awards are`Rock Album Of The Year' whichreplaces the previous 'Band Of TheYear' category, and 'Best ArtistWebsite,' created in partnershipwith music portal MCity.fr. Part ofthe Lagardere group, MCity.fr willalso create a dedicated web site forLes Victoires de la Musique.

Another major change for 2001is a move towards voting in a sin-gle round, instead of two. "Thisaims to increase the spontaneityand the simplicity of the process,"explains Victoires president MarcThonon. The board of the Victoiresalso sees the new voting process asa way of ensuring a more diverselist of winners.

The winners will bevoted for by an academyof 2,700 professionals,up from last year's

1,900. 40% are artists,40% are professionalsinvolved in the productionand distribution of music, and 20% are journalistsand other music profes-sionals. The list of nomi-

nees will be announced on Janu-ary 17.The only categories to be voted

on by the public will be the 'BestNew Act,' and the new 'Best ArtistWebsite' category. Two specialawards-not subject to voting-have also been introduced. Theyare an International AchievementAward, celebrating the success out-side France of a domestic artist, and an Outstanding Career Award, dedicated to an artist proposed andvoted by the Victoires board. This

year, the board has chosen to nom-inate Virgin recording artistRenaud for the latter prize.

The Victoires has strengthenedits organisational team with theaddition of marketing/communica-tions manager Caroline Diamentand a new press officer, DianeAttali. Diament was previouslydeputy managing director of EpicFrance, while Attali was head ofcommunications at the VirginMegastore in Paris.

Thonon says that he wants toattract as many artists as possibleto the Victoires, something whichhas not always been the case in thepast. "I'd like to thank those artistswho have remained faithful," hesays. "I know some still need to beconvinced [to attend]-that's one ofour biggest challenges to come."

Thonon adds: "We are awarethat we need to have a more profes-sional Victoires de la Musique. Inthe past, we might not havethought enough in terms of thetelevision programme, or aboutdeveloping the Victoires brand. It'simportant to preserve Les Victoireas the reference event for theindustry. Two [other] awards showshave been created recently-it'sgood for the record companies, butLes Victoires should stand apart."

ARTISTS & MUSIC

DIVoirE S

by Gary Smith

LA CORONACrowning a great year for Italian pop/dance, Fonzie'sLove (Time/Italy) is sure to hit the charts early nextyear. Combining a sassy vocal, a snappy rhythm and astrong chorus the track is made for radio. Sweeping, melodramatic strings and faux DJ edits pile on thepressure while an intelligent arrangement takes careof the rest. A full vocal extended mix can only help toensure crossover action.

SOMETHING TO TICKLE YOUR FANCYFeaturing a choice sample from Act Like You Know byFat Larry, Fluid's How Do U Feel (Scorpio/France) hasalready topped the French club charts and is nowbeing promoted at radio. A rich, mid -tempo groovecomplete with tinkling guitars and plaintive synthplus a catchy semi -spoken vocal should be enough toattract both dedicated dance programmers and, basedon reactions so far, more mainstream slots too.

POETRY IN REVOLUTIONIronically it was the remix version of the first DJVadim album, USSR Reconstruction (Ninja Tune/UK)that revealed the wealth of talent behind previouslyreleased minimalist and often frustrating sound-scapes. Since then Vadim just gets better, and braver. His arrangements are richer and classier and now, with Your Revolution featuring Sarah Jones, funnyand just a little bit risque. He is still very much the b -boy but the inclusion of Jones provides a poetic foil toVadim's churning, uncompromised music.

FUNK OF THE FUTUREA veritable treasure trove of surprises, Future WorldFunk #2 (Ocho/UK) opens up with Gotan Project'sTriptico. The tune kicks in with an Astor Piazzola-esqueaccordion refrain which is then joined by a decidedlyethnic but well - thumping four on the floor beat.Further pleasant shocks come from the silky sensualityof In The Beginning by Los Chicharrons which morphsinto a powerful, tribal chant and the redoubtable TomZe whose 0 Olho Do Lago is given the once over by SeanLennon. An appearance by Romanthony with the JBrown -inspired Bring You Up tipyfies the inclusive, eclectic nature of the series while Kerri Chandler's Coroand Gur Nalon Ishk Mitha by the Bollywood BrassBand are the icing on this Oglobal cake.

SWEPT AWAY BY THE JOY OF LIFEThe Avalanches (Rex Records/UK) are not merely thelatest addition to the XL roster, they are also purvey-ors of one of the boldest and most refreshing soundssince early bigbeat. This is not to say they are post-bigbeat bigbeat, anything but in fact. The sound onthe EP featuring A Different Feeling, Radio,Electricity, 2 Hearts In 3/4 Time, is however, indu-bitably soul and rock influenced. Lashings of discostrings, vocal samples as well as vocals in the tradi-tional sense and, most importantly, an irrepressiblesense of joie de vie are the key factors. While it isabsolutely fair to say that in any end -of -the -line peri-od with its attendant confusion and widespread medi-ocrity-right now, in other words-any band with a bitof extra "000mph" is bound to sound good. TheAvalanches though, are seriously on the moneywhichever way one looks at it. Highly recomended.

Europe to meet Waters again?by Paul Sexton

In 1999, Roger Waters took to the road and, inthe words of one of his classic Pink Floyd com-positions, asked "Is There Anybody Out There?"

With a total attendance of 210,350 for just 18US dates, the answer was a resounding "yes"despite the artist having no studio record to hisname in seven years and without a new one insight. Fuelled by such public support, Waterswent back on the road last summer resulting inthe December 4 release of In The Flesh(Columbia)-a two -CD memen-to of the tour, to be followed by astate-of-the-art DVD versionthat the label hopes to releasein early spring, featuring fullconcert footage, a 30 -minutedocumentary, photographs, lyrics and other key ingredientsof the stage production.

In The Flesh stands as a 24 -song review of Waters' entirecareer as a songwriter, from1968's Set The Controls ForThe Heart Of The Sun throughcountless Floyd classics totracks from his solo albums, concluding with new composi-tion Each Small Candle. "I think Set TheControls was probably my first publishedwork," says Waters, "and Each Small Candle Istarted working on in the studio in February[for] a new album."

Each Small Candle uses a poem by a SouthAmerican victim of torture, as its first verseand was composed after Waters read a news-paper article about a Serbian soldier's act ofmercy to an Albanian woman during theKosovo conflict. He says until he can find outthe author, the royalties from that portion ofthe song will go to Amnesty International.

"It's very key from our perspective that [thealbum] embraces the entire scope of hiscareer," says Will Botwin, executive VP/GM,Columbia Records Group. "It's a pretty great

collection when you sit down and look at allthe breadth of a long and successful career."

Germany has always been a strong marketfor both Pink Floyd and Waters, and CarstenHoyer, head of music at AC station Radio NRWin Oberhausen, explains that his station has adedicated show for such music. "We don't playPink Floyd in our regular programming, butwe have a show called Soundcheck Classics onTuesday evenings where we play materialfrom the '60s and '70s and we also have theopportunity to feature new material from

these artists."In April, EMI released the

double CD Is There AnybodyOut There? The Wall Live,Pink Floyd 1980-81, a lavishrecord of Waters' meisterwerkwith the band but one theartist did not sanction. "I hadnothing to do with it," he says."Pink Floyd is run as a compa-ny, and the four of us own 25%of the shares each, so I canalways be outvoted [on] any-thing that's to do with thatback catalogue." There isclearly little love lost betweenWaters and his former band

mates. "For Dave [Gilmour] and Nick [Mason]to be going around the world playing in foot-ball stadiums the very songs that I wrote inprotest of that rank kind of commercialism, felt very much to me like my children beingsold into prostitution, and was very painful, and if I could have stopped it, I would havedone," Waters states.

Plans are afoot to bring the In The Fleshtour to Europe during 2001. Meanwhile, development of the new studio album contin-ues, but it may not be released until after theappearance, under his name on SonyClassical, of the score of ca Ira, an operatichistory of the French Revolution on whichWaters has been working since 1989.

Shimoli proves a natural for EMIby Jason Christie

A major priority for EMI Sweden in 2001 islocal signing Shimoli. With just one single,Damned, under her belt the singer receivedalbum release commitmentsfrom no less than 32 territo-ries as well as a nominationfrom MTV for best Nordicact.

Damned was voted intothe Best Nordic category byan 800 -strong jury alongsidefellow Swedes The Ark,Thomas Rusiak plus FinnsDarude, and eventual win-ners Bombfunk MC's.

Producer Marcus Dernulfdiscovered Shimoli in themost underground of set-tingsbusking R&B coversin the Stockholm subway, but Shimoli dis-misses her soul diva label. "People think Iam a soul artist because of my looks, but it'sthe music that counts," she tells M&M. "Thealbum is a pop album-melody-based with afew rhythm based influences [which] aremore pop -edged than soul."

The album in question is self -titled andslated for release early in the new year

alongside an unsynchronised internationalrelease of the debut single.

Proof of Shimoli's potential came from arousing reception given by German andSwiss EMI executives when she showcased

at their annual conference.Building on such exposureEMI Sweden has been busyplanning campaigns for early2001. "We have presentedShimoli to the Asian mar-ket," reports Li Eriksson,EMI Sweden internationalexploitation manager,"[while] the single Damned isalready bubbling in otherparts of Scandinavia andGermany."

In Sweden, Damned sold10,000 units and broke thetop ten in the official

Swedish radio airplay chart. Meanwhile asecond single, Natural, is also performingwell at radio in Sweden. Head of Music atMTG - owned AC network Rix FM, AndersSvensson, explains why: "Natural is thekind of track that the listeners take imme-diately to heart. It's also a subtle track giv-ing it a longer radio life because its burn-out factor is low."

AIRBORNEThe pick of the week's new singles

by Siri Stavenes Dove & Miriam Hubner

SLIGABABESNEW YEAR(London)Release date: UK: December18, Rest of Europe tbcIt's only right that a Christmasrecord is featured in the Airbornesection at this time of the year. New

Year is poppy R&B and, despite featuring the word"Christmas" in the chorus is completely free ofjinglebells and children singing. Produced by CameronMcVey, the track is co -written by British teen bandSugababes who released their debut album One Touchin the UK in November. The record will hit the shopsin the rest of Europe in the new year. Before beingsigned by the team behind All Saints at LondonRecords, the girls started singing together when theywere 13 and still at school in London. Their first singleOverload, out earlier this year, attracted a lot ofinterest in continental Europe as well as the UK, andhas so far spent eight weeks in the European RadioTop 50. The record was a "superhit" for Kent's InvictaFM in the UK, and programme controller Tony Fisheradded follow-up New Year four weeks ago. "It'sfantastic! It's a great Christmas tune without beingdeliberately Christmassy, which is exactly what weare looking for. We are trying to stay away from thecheesy stuff," Fisher says. SSD

DIDOHERE WITH ME(BMG/Arista)Release date: February21

Signed to Arista in theStates, Dido is the Britishsinger responsible for the

melodious tones on Eminem's current hit singleStan. The track samples Thank You which, alongwith Dido's current single Here With Me, featureson her debut album No Angel, which has alreadygone platinum in the US. Named after a heroinein Greek mythology, Dido enjoyed classicaltraining at London's Guild Hall of Music beforeworking with her brother Rollo Armstrong's bandFaithless, where she sang on their million -sellingdebut album Reverence. Unsurprisingly, theambient soundscapes and mix of acoustic tunesand electronica on No Angel are reminiscent ofFaithless. Dido's soft, smoky voice underpinnedby slow trip hop rhythms give the song a mellow, even melancholy touch. As such, Here With Me isrepresentative of an album that switchesbetween pop and easy listening, and is warm, groovy music to relax to at home on a coldwinter's day. "Dido has the old Cranberriessound in her voice which is very popular," saysVille Viler', head of music at YLE 2/Radiomafiain Finland. "She has a kind of singing style thatis familiar to our listeners-and of course it is alaid-back beautiful song." MH

Currently playing at: Kiss 100/UK, Downtown Radio/UK, BBC Radio1/UK, BBC Radio 2/UK, 95.8 CapitalFM/UK, YLE Radiomafia/Finland,

DANCE BEATThe weekly dance chart comment by Siri Stavenes Dove

Daft Punk's One More Time (Labels/Virgin) isstill at the top of the European Dance Traxxchart as the year comes to an end. Havingspent four weeks at number one, the ;rack isstill enjoying massive support from DJsacross Europe and is also doing well sales -wise in most territories. Meanwhile, at two, fellow French act Modjo have spent an amaz-ing 23 weeks on the chart with Lady (Hear MeTonight) (Sound Of Barclay/Universal), andhave proved themselves as one of the biggestdance acts of 2000, spending nine weeks atnumber one.

"We knew [Lady Hear Me Tonight] was ahit but we didn't expect it to happen so fast,"says international product manager atBarclay, Emma Errera. "We held it back allsummer and when it was released onSeptember 4, it went straight to number onein the UK and to number two in Germany."

Modjo's second single Chillin' will bereleased at the end of February, with thedebut album to follow in March. After havingshipped gold in Switzerland, Australia,Denmark and many other countries, Lady isnow being taken to the US and Japan, wherethe interest already is high. "We are expectinghuge success judging by the amount of club -play the track has enjoyed so far," says Errera.

As expected at this time of year, only twonew tracks enter the chart this week, andboth acts are German. Cosmic Gate comes inat 32 with Exploration Of Space I Melt To TheOcean (EMI) while Elektrochemie LK's WhenI Rock (Confused/Leaded/Fuel/East West) is anew entry at 39. Both tracks get into the chart

on the basis of clubplayand sales in their homemarket only.

Phoenix's (pictured) IfI Ever Feel Better(Source/Virgin) is expect-ed to enter the firstDance Traxx chart of

2001. Other contenders include Nipster feat.Jane Vaughan's Better Like This (Epic) andTaiko's Silence (Alphabet City/Xtra Nova).

ON THE AIRM&M's weekly airplay analysis column

So 2000 is finally drawing to a close andeveryone is slowly getting used to the 21stcentury. Big Brother is still just a game showand there isn't a flying car in sight, but howwas 2000 for European radio?

Well, as ever it was a mixed bag, but gen-erally positive notes were struck. "2000 wasthe most successful year for us," says head ofmusic at the German CHR station RadioFFH. "In our 11th year we had the highestnumber of listeners ever, and the best finan-cial results." Blasberg says that was down tothe music mix. "We are now an experiencedhit radio station and we play a broad variety

of 80s and 90s music, as well asthe hits of today. We've alsolearned to introduce new tracksat the right moment."

Radio FFH was one of the firststations in Germany to playAnastacia's (pictured) I'm OuttaLove. Sony recognised their rolein breaking the act in the territo-ry, and gave the station a plaquecertifying gold sales of therecord. Laith Al Deen, a new

German act, also got a lot of support from thestation, who playlisted his Bilder Von Dir(Epic) at an early stage. "We still play thesesongs and they represent our format verywell," says Blasberg.

In Norway, Hot AC station Radio 102experienced a successful 2000 as well. "Weachieved 36% daily listening in the secondquarter, the highest it's ever been, as well asthe highest profit ever," says head of musicEgil Houeland. "Musically the highlight wasdiscovering Briskeby. They were definitelythe best thing to happen to Norwegian musicthis year," says Houeland. The most playedsong on Radio 102 in 2000 was MarcAnthony's You Sang To Me (Columbia), andthe second most played track was A-ha'sSummer Moved On (WEA). The stationlaunched their new website this year.

"You don't have to look any further thanModjo and Spiller for quality," says AdamBridge programme controller at UK CHRstation 96.4 FM-BRMB. And, referring toCraig David, Bridge rejoices "to see home-grown talent making it so big." He adds:"There has been a shift in music this year.R&B has become more accepted in a main-stream context." The big issue for theBirmingham station this year has been thelaunch of their new drivetime comedy showBarmy Brummies "It has proved very popu-lar and we are hoping to build on that suc-cess next year," says Bridge.

As Christmas approached, the usualstream of festive tunes filled the airwaves.

Radio 102 were spinning two Christmastracks an hour, and Christmas Eve was ded-icated soley to seasonal tunes. Houeland'sfavourites were Chris Rea's Driving HomeFor Christmas (East West) and The Poguesand Kirsty McColl's A Fairytale Of New York(Northwestside), which has taken on anadded poignancy in light of McColl's recenttragic death.

At 96.4 FM-BRMB, favourites includedDestiny's Child's Eight Days Of Christmas(Columbia) and TLC's Sleigh Ride(LaFace/Arista).

Universal's millennium year continued from page 1

irresistible sales run of Santana'sSupernatural, M&M's album charttopper of 2000. Other artists con-tributing significantly to BMG's fig-ures were Whitney Houston, Westlife,Eros Ramazzotti and Toni Braxton.

EMI lost out in singles chart sharebut improved by some 5% its albumchart performance, with a busy yearfeaturing Radiohead, Coldplay, RobbieWilliams and Kylie on the EMI side, and Melanie C., The Spice Girls andLenny Kravitz batting for Virgin. Theend of year release of the Beatles's com-pilation 1 came as the icing on the cake.

Zomba has definitely cemented itsstatus as Europe's leading indepen-dent company, with close to a 10%share of the singles charts andalmost 5% of the album chart.

London -based Zomba Internation-al Record Group managing directorStuart Watson says these results are"a testimony to the work of all ouraffiliates. We have put together astructure combining good A&R and

innovative marketing with possiblythe best people and the best records."

Watson says that one of the char-acteristics of Zomba's success is thatit is based on a very high ratio of hitsversus misses. Most of Zomba's per-formance is attributable to releasesby Britney Spears, the BackstreetBoys, Steps, N'Sync and R. Kelly."We are very focused, we have fewer

releases and a very high strike rate -one out of three releases is a success,"he explains.

Watson adds that Zomba's perfor-mance is even more remarkable con-sidering that most of the company'sinternational affiliates were onlyrecently set up -the French companyis only 15 months old, and Spain andItaly have only been operating for sixmonths. "Our managing directorsshould feel very proud of our collec-tive achievement," he says. "We are avery young company, we're gettingbetter at what we do and there is stillroom for improvement."

which complement each other per-fectly."

EMI's interest in the label followsdomestic music doubling its share ofthe Dutch market to almost 25% overthe past 10 years.

The label's roster of artistsincludes the internationally success-ful Dutch singer Anouk, as well asRene Froger, Ruth Jacott and JodyBernal, who was responsible for QueSi, Que No, this year's biggest -sellingsingle in Holland.

As a partner of TV productioncompany Endemol, Dino also holdsthe international audio and videorights to the TV series Big Brother, and has already produced two topfive singles in the German charts,

both Big Brother spin-offs.Berk admits that EMI were not

the only interested party in Dino."This summer we've been courted byall majors but one," he says. "But mygut feelings about EMI Music, boththe Dutch office and the UK head-quarters, were the most positive. TheDutch EMI affiliate is a young anddynamic company. I like its philoso-phy and its decisiveness. The samething applies to the UK headquar-ters, which showed an enormousspeed of action."

As part of the deal, EMI has anoption to acquire the remaining 25%of Dino Music in the future.

Italy to open Europe'smusic awards seasonby Mark Worden

MILAN - The Italian music industrywill kick off the European musicawards season with its first ever"official; awards ceremony in Febru-ary.

The Italian Music Awards arebeing organised by the IFPI-affiliatedlabels' body FIMI. "We've been tryingto do this for years, but there wasalways invariably some kind of obsta-cle," FIMI director general EnzoMazza tells M&M. "This year wedecided to take the bull by the hornsand just do it."

The inaugural ceremony will beheld at Milan's Auditorium on Febru-ary 5, 2001. "The reason why Italyhas not had an official awards showuntil now is because the San RemoSong Festival has always been con-sidered the industry's annual get-together," says Mazza. "Not that weplan to replace it in any way," he cau-tions.

Italy currently has an unofficialmusic awards ceremony, Premio Ital-iano della Musica (PIM), organisedby the national newspaper, LaRepubblica, and based on a poll of itsreaders.

Toni Vandoni, who handles rela-tions with record labels for national

music network Radio Italia SMI, wel-comes the announcement. "PIM is agreat evening's entertainment, butthere's a lot of doubt around about itsreliability as a barometer of Italianmusic," he says. "There was alwaysthe suspicion that the interests ofagencies and record companies camefirst. We are confident that FIMI'sawards will be far more objective. It'sgreat news."

FIMI has picked a Grammy -styleacademy of 400 music industryexperts, including record companyrepresentatives, journalists, DJs,managers and producers, to make upthe panel of judges.

There are a total of 12 categoriesfor the Italian Music Awards. Nine ofthem are for domestic artists -BestAlbum; Best Single; Best FemaleArtist; Best Male Artist; Best Group;Best New Act; Best Video; Best Tourand Best Dance Artist. There arethree categories for internationalacts -Best Female Artist; Best MaleArtist and Best Group. Nominationsfor all the categories will be releasedin January.

Mazza is not prepared to disclosewhich acts are likely to be performingon February 5. "I can't say just yet,"he says. "We're too busy trying to getthe nominations out on time."

Safina turns the tide in Holland continued from page 1

Ions of the Dutch singles chart sinceits release in September, Luna pro-vided the springboard for Safina'sdebut album Insieme A Te (Mercury)to top the Mega Top 100 Albumschart in December in only its secondweek, outselling The Beatles 1 (EMI)compilation by more than 25%.

Signed to Universal France andreleased in the Netherlands throughMercury, Safina's ascent to pop star-dom was no accident -although hisdiscovery by Mercury Holland TVpromotion manager Alice des Bouvriewas a pleasant surprise.

"On first hearing I thought 'wow, this is it'. I felt goose bumps all over,"Des Bouvrie remembers after open-ing and playing a package containingSafina's album and an EPK [promo-tional kit] that had been left on herdesk while she was away on holidayin July.

With Mercury Holland productmanager Eva Ten Have, Des Bouvriestarted spreading the news of her dis-covery among the TV stations andproduction houses in the Nether-lands. "September 19 was D-day withSafina appearing live on the NationalLottery show on [commercial TVchannel] RTL4," she recounts. "Afterthat there was no stopping him."

No stopping him indeed, as a vir-tually endless string of TV perfor-mances followed. Des Bouvrie claimsshe hardly thought about Bocelliwhen Safina was launched into thebig time, but Frans van Dun, musicdirector at national soft AC station

Sky Radio, certainly did.Although it debuted on Sky's sis-

ter station Classic FM, Sky was thefirst pop station in Holland to air thecatchy single Luna on September 7.Subsequently Van Dun put Luna onSky's playlist, giving it three spinsper day.

"For us the combination of aBocelli-type voice plus the good looksof George Clooney make Safina asure-fire winner," says Van Dun,adding that "our phones were red hotin the first weeks we played thetrack." In the slipstream of Sky, pub-lic AC station Radio 2 followed and, after that station put the song onpowerplay rotation in November, chart success beckoned.

"In our marketing strategy wedeliberately kept the album releaseon hold until November 27 to coincidewith Safina's live performances atthe Night Of The Proms fortnight inRotterdam," explains Eva Ten Have."Meanwhile, because of his goodlooks, we started targeting all the TVshows aimed at the female demo-graphic."

At the close of 2000, Dutch sales ofLuna had gone well beyond the goldmark of 40,000 units, while thealbum, Insieme A Te, went gold injust two days. At presstime, the long -player had reached platinum status, with sales in excess of 80,000 copies.Safina kicks off the New Year withhis first live solo performance in theNetherlands on January 16 at TheHague's Congress Centre.
