Volume 19 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 20, 2019
Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn Tuesday, January 22, 2019
Opportunities: The annual day of penance and prayer for the protection of the unborn will take place on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The parish has two opportunities to be a part of a community prayer and penance: Morning Mass at 7:30AM with an afternoon Holy Hour including our school children starting at 1:00PM and concluding with Benediction. Both events will take place in the church. For those who are unable to attend these two events, you can always commit personally by fasting, praying the rosary or the litany for the unborn printed in this bulletin. (Page 4) Reflection: Years ago, an older gentleman said something to me which I never forgot. The man was not a pro-life zealot but just an ordinary faithful disciple with a prophetic message. He said, the cure for cancer would have been found if it were not for the numerous children who have been aborted. He thought the one who would unlock the secret, was a person who never had the chance to live out his/her potential. His words are probably true. This week, the faithful are recalling a sad anniversary. It has been 46 years since the landmark Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion in the country. It is estimated that over 60 million babies have been aborted since 1973! Sixty million is a big number, too big to really comprehend the amount of innocent lives tak-en each year. The number broken down is much more understandable but still horrific to contemplate. Over 3600 abortions occur daily which means there are 152 abortions performed per hour across the country. Do those numbers reflect women’s health care? Not hardly. Most of the big abortion clinics are situated in urban areas and prey on the undereducated and the lower socio-economic individuals of our society. The advocates of the abortion industry have successfully propagandized certain sections of the population to re-name the killing of the unborn in some contorted way claiming it is a question of women’s health. The argument is illogical and untrue. In the study, Human Development: The Span of Life, the authors write, “In that fraction of a second when the chromosomes form pairs, the sex of the new child will be determined, hereditary characteristics received from each parent will be set, and a new life will have begun.” In a world where there are social justice warriors everywhere, they seem to have nothing to say about the justice which should be afforded to the unborn nor the manipulation of certain segments of the population for political gain, and none is greater than the push and fight to have the “right” to kill another human being. Recall, just months ago the confirmation hearings of Judge Kavanaugh was centered on the fear that his votes on the Supreme Court would ultimately reverse the Roe Vs. Wade decision. Do any of social justice warriors ever think a pro-choice position could be racist? I hope some day they will because it is decimating populations of color at a very high rate for the past 46 years. Keep in mind those who go through the procedure, either surgically or chemically through the day after pill. People can put things on the back burner perhaps for many years, but they can’t do it forever. Something, someone will be a trigger in their life and then they will come face-to-face with the reality of their life. Others who have had abortions often times live self-destructive lives because they too are the victims of the abortion industry, an industry which is both economic and ideological. The industry is diametrically opposed to the Order of God and believes that human beings should have ultimate freedom regardless of the action taken for that freedom. It is so sad because in the wake of abortion are the unborn, but also those who inevitably suffer the consequences of a lie which tries to explain the killing of another human being is a good thing or it will bring good to those who participate. Pray for those men and women too this Tuesday. Fr. Tim

This weekend is the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Many people in Latin America and the Caribbean do not have access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture, rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers. Your generosity makes it possible for our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE Ordinary Time?
“In the course of the year, the Church unfolds the whole mystery of Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1163). Ordinary Time is when we learn about Jesus’ life and ministry; the parables, beatitudes and His miracles. While the other Liturgical Seasons celebrate Jesus’ Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection and answer the questions of “Why we live? or “Why we die?” Ordinary Time answers the question: “How are we to live?” The color green is a sign of hope and life and it reminds us of early springs where plants are sprouting up showing signs of growth. Green symbolizes the “vitality of life of faith.” Encyclopedia of Catholic Devotions and Practices, p. 138
“For everything there is a season.” ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1
Respect Life Holy Hour
Please join us in praying for an end to abortion.
On January 22nd from 1PM to 2PM we will
have a Holy Hour of Prayer with Benediction in the Church.
In 1973 on January 22, the Supreme Court decided that Abortion on Demand was legal in all 50 states. Millions of babies have been aborted because of shame, convenience, “wrong” sex, etc. They were citizens of our Country who were denied the Right to Life, guaranteed by our Constitution. They had no Choice about being terminated. Do you think fetal body parts have stopped being used for experiments? We have to be their voice and stand for Life from Our Creator who chose all to live here on earth, so we could be with Him in Heaven.
If you cannot join us, please take time that day to pray for
life to be cherished not destroyed.
A PRAYER FOR LIFE
Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation
with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives
in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart
reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people
a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God forever and ever. Amen

Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul January 25
St. Paul has one of the most dramatic and famous conversion stories of all time. Saul was born a Roman citizen in Tarsus. Paul was a highly educated Jewish man who was educated in classical disciplines such as rhetoric and in the strict observance of Mosaic law. Paul was a zealous Pharisee and had returned to Tarsus before Jesus began his public ministry in Palestine. In fact, Saul was so zealous about the law that he persecuted Christians because they departed from it in their following of Jesus. He was in the crowd that murdered St. Stephen, the first martyr, and violently persecuted other Christians. He would drag Christians out of their homes, shackle them with chains, and throw them in prison.
He asked permission to round up all the Christians in Damascus and march them, in chains, to Jerusalem as an example. On his way to Damascus, he was surrounded by an intensely bright light from heaven and was struck to the ground. “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me,” a voice called out. “Who are you, sir?” Saul cried out. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9). Saul was converted at that moment, and the Lord instructed him to go into Damascus, where he would be told what to do. Saul got up but realized he could not see—he had been struck blind by the vision.
He was led into the city and sheltered there until a Christian named Ananias was told by the risen Lord to find Saul and lay hands on him and heal him. Ananias had heard about this Saul and was reluctant but followed Jesus’ instructions and laid hands on him. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes and he regained his sight.
Saul was baptized and changed his name to Paul, and almost immediately began preaching in the synagogues that Jesus was the Son of God. He went on to make missionary journeys through southern Europe and Asia Minor, and converted many—especially among people who were not Jewish. Fourteen of his letters are preserved as part of the New Testament. Paul was killed in Rome by beheading, the method of execution for Roman citizens, which is why he is often depicted with a sword. His relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica, including part of the column where he was beheaded. His conversion is depicted in a stained-glass window there.
St. Paul, apostle who dramatically changed your life after encountering the persecuted Christ—pray for us!

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, GA, was a vital figure of the modern era and a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. His lectures and dialogues stirred the concern and sparked the conscience of a generation. His charismatic leadership inspired men and women, young and old, in this nation and around the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and died on April 4, 1968.
In honor of a great man, let us all hold our dreams up for the world to see and our hearts to embrace. Here are a few of King's pearls of wisdom to help remind you of the power of a vision.
"Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase."
"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do
you have to keep moving forward."
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness: Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that."
“The time is always right to do the right thing."
"Intelligence plus character-- that is the goal of true education."
"I have decided to stick to love ... Hate is too great a burden to bear."
"Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve.
You don't have to make your subject & verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace.
A soul generated by love."
"Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude."
"Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it,
because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy
is to seek happiness for others."
"I have a dream that one day little black boys and girls will be holding hands with little white boys and girls."
"People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other;
they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other."
