Success Story - Xerfia

The success story of Shreyas Kapale, fifth

semester computer science engineering

student, founder and CEO of Xerfia goes

back to his school days which he says he

was ‘obsessed with computers, internet

and games’ ever since his childhood. He

started building games right from his

school days and named his first game as

Teddy Bear Adventures which was a

Pacman Maze game. He then developed a

Bouncing Ball Based game which he

integrated in his own software SEG

(Study, Entertainment and Design) that

had a list of famous scientists, their

inventions and a mini video playing

system. By the time Shreyas was in his

secondary school, he had already

mastered C programming and Web

programming and had subsequently built

xBooster, a personal computer

performance boosting software and

Dynamic Shoes, built for farmers to charge

phones. This innovation won him

accolades in Rotary State Fair and INSEF

National Fair.

8

Mr Shreyas Kapale, CEO Xerfia

5th Semester, Computer Science

and Engineering

During his higher secondary education,

Shreyas had had innovated Alpha, a semi

- intelligent AI (Artificial Intelligence) robot

crafted with raspberry pi; Alphasearch, an

exploration and security robot; Anti

Bunking System software and Silent

Places an android application. He founded

the Xerfia in the year 2010 and ‘Xerfia’ he

says stands for ‘creativity, application and

design’.

Some of his distinguishing innovations

includes:

CamIO - a smart camera developed on

image processing and machine learning

concepts that won the ScienceHackDay

Innovation Award.

OpenMouse - software which can turn

your webcam to mouse.

FilterBird - a python library that can give

filters to images.

He has also made tremendous

contributions in open source that can be

searched on

https://github.com/shreyaskapale

His clients include Prerana PUC Tumkur,

Informant Networks, FullStop Services

Bangalore, Laundrokart and Sudina. His

company provides Web, App and

Consultancy services to these companies.

Shreyas has also started a developer

group in GIT called PyGIT and which is

associated with Python Pune and PyData

Belgaum.

At present Xerfia is building capital for

future products based on Machine

Learning and cyber security which are still

under development.

Projects under Xerfia OpenMouse is a Utility

software for designers.

OpenMouse uses

image processing to

detect motion of finger

and moves the mouse

depending on the finger

movement. In simple

words , a software

which can turn your

webcam to mouse , you

just need to move your

fingers in front of the

webcam to use the

mouse.

CamIO is a smart

camera developed on

image processing and

machine learning

concepts. CamIO is

developed specifically

for places with huge

crowds. CamIO stores

faces of people in an

entity and has the

ability to count the

number of absentees.

Alpha is a semi -

intelligent AI robot

crafted with raspberry

pi, which can do object

detection, it can identify

objects, faces, and

much more ! Alpha can

talk, move and sense.

Alpha is also developed

on image processing

and machine learning

concepts. Alpha has

been awarded by

Science Society of

India.

Dynamic Shoezz is a utility mount for a basic

shoes, which turns the shoes into a mobile

charging shoes and also has other utilities like

step counter and torch.

AlphaSearch is a exploration and security robot

which can go into deep places for exploration. It

can be also used as a guard robot as it can be

controlled via Internet and can stream live

camera feed to its users.

The Indian Civil Service Examination

serves as the backbone of India and

carries great respect and responsibilities.

Actually, CSE is conducted at various

services under the Government of India.

Most popular among them are Indian

Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police

Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS),

Indian Revenue Service (IRS) etc. Even

though corporate jobs may offer the best

of salaries and perks, a majority of

youngsters and their parents still crave an

entry to the prestigious Indian Civil

Services held by the UPSC

Mr Maitrey Kulkarni KLS Gogte Institute of Technology

Maitrey Kulkarni is one of the successful IFS

officer (2010 batch) from Belagavi. He did his

schooling from M V Herwadkar English School

(2001) and completed his Mechanical

engineering degree in 2008 from KLS Gogte

Institute of Technology and a gold medalist of

VTU in Mechanical engineering.

Maitrey comes from a middle class background

with his grandparents being teachers (Shri

Vishnupant Kulkarni and Smt Sindhutai

Kulkarni). His father is a retired Commercial

Artist. Mother (Smt Sheeladhi Kulkarni) runs a

small household mess and his elder brother

Sankalp works at the Zuari Agro-Chemicals,

Goa. Ever since his childhood, he had decided

to join the Indian Foreign Service.

Maitrey had developed a liking for international

relations very early in his life. While reading

newspapers, magazines; while watching TV

shows, or even when reading fiction, he found

that it was always events on the world stage

that caught his eye. He researched a while and

concluded that the Indian Foreign Service

provided him a grand avenue to channelize his

interest into a career.

A wonderful combination of being in the thick of

his interests and his country’s representative

was what made him decide to pursue the

Foreign Service as a career, around his pre-

university days. His first attempt to the UPSC

was in 2008. In was in his second attempt in

2010 that he secured the 103rd place and he

joined the IFS.

Maitrey had decided to take up Mechanical

Engineering as one of the optional subjects for

the UPSC CS Examination and therefore

carefully studied the core sections in

Mechanical Engineering while undergoing the

BE course. It was after his graduation that he

shifted focus to the other optional subjects

and the vast subject of General Studies.

‘Confidence, steadfastness and perseverance

are all that are needed to crack the UPSC

exam. But an added advantage would be a cool

mind. It’s after all just another exam and the

less bones one makes about it the easier the

process becomes’, is what he opines on the

main qualities required to begin with the UPSC

exams.

RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY

PROJECTS

Research on the use of industrial

waste materials such as ground

granulated Blast furnace slag, fly

ash etc. are being studied for the

preparation of concrete mixes for

using it in different layers of

concrete pavements. The research

is being carried out by Mr.

Somnath Khot under the guidance

of Dr Nitendra Palankar

Research is also being carried to

study the use of steel slag

aggregates arising from steel

melting shops of iron industry to

replace the natural coarse

aggregate in the pavement

construction. The study is being

carried out by Mrs Archana Shagoti

under the guidance of Dr Nitendra

Palankar.

Efforts have also being made by

faculty to study the use of various

other waste materials such as the

building demolition waste, foundry

sand, iron ore tailings, recycled

asphalt phringes, different types of

slags etc. to its easy and effective

utilization in different layers of

pavement in the UG projects

Dr Nitendra Palankar has worked

on eco-friendly cementless

concrete which can be air cured

without need of water for curing.

Projects on the same are being

given to UG students

The utilization of fly ash and ggbfs

have also being studied its use in

soil based layers and several

projects on soil stabilization have

been carried by research scholars,

Prof Uma Hullur and students.

The use of Foundry slag as

aggregates in base course layers

of roads is also being investigated

by Prof Archana Shagoti

Research is also carried out by
