The Association of Structural and Geotechnical Consultants, Kerala and the Dept.of Civil Engineering, AISAT jointly organized a short term workshop on “FEMApplications in CivilEngineering, usingANSYS” from 25th

June to 27th June 2015.Mr. Cinu P. Thomas,Managing Director, In-ter CAD Systems Pvt.Ltd. inaugurated theworkshop. He deliveredan enlightening talkabout the advances ofsoftwares in the worldof civil engineering.

The workshop was a combination of technical lectures and hands-on training onANSYS. The workshop commenced with the expert lecture on Finite ElementAnalysis by Dr. C. G. Nandakumar, Professor, Dept. of Ship Technology, CUSAT.Prof. Renjith R, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, FISAT was the prominentresource person in the workshop. The workshop had extensive participationincluding practicing structural and geotechnical engineers, M Tech students,PhD scholars and engineering faculty from across the state.

Final year B-Tech students of AISAT enthusiastically participated inthis program and were given the authorized certification from Autodesk.

Two day training on PLAXIS 3D was conducted for the faculty of thedepartment on 23rd and 24th April 2015. Mr.Sivasubramaniam, M/s.RamCaddsys Pvt Ltd gave hands on training and presentations on PLAXIS 3D.

A training program on Latex, a high-quality type setting system was organizedfor the final year Civil Engineering students 06th July 2015. The sessionswere delivered by Mr. Paul Ansel V, HoD, Dept. of Electronics andCommunication Engineering, AISAT.on training and lectures on the featuresfor the production of technical and scientific documentation were given duringthe course of the training.

A training on OBE system ofeducation was arranged at CivilEngineering department on 17thNovember 2015. The sessionswere handled by Prof. P. X.Joseph, Department of AppliedScience and Humanities,AISAT.

Dr Jimmy Thomas participated in GEO Quebec 2015,68th Canadian Geotechnical Conference held atConvention center, Quebec City, Canada during 20-23September 2015. The conference reflected the diversityof complex challenges in the field of geotechnicalengineering particularly in cold region. The deliberationswere further intended to formulate the strategies to fostersustainable economic development. The CanadianGeotechnical Society (CGS), in collaborationthe EasternQuebec Section of the Canadian Geotechnical Society,and the Canadian National Committee for the International Permafrost Association(CNC-IPA) organized the conference.

The Civil engineeringdepartment at AISATis committed to be anintellectual hub whichprovides the stimulusto the budding engi-neers which helpsthem to excel in thefield of research inCivil engineering. TheIGS-AISAT Award,for the best M-Techthesis in Geotechnicalengineering in Keralais yet another venturein this regard. TheIGS-AISAT award-2015 was awarded to M. Kalyani of NIT, Calicut for herexceptional work on ‘Ground improvement of soft clay using compacted limeflyash column technique’.

The award which comprised of a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000/-, waspresented to her, by Dr.V. S Raju, Former Director Indian Institute of Technol-ogy, Delhi duringan august function at the fourth Praphulla Kumar Lecture onOctober 10that IMA hall, Ernakulam. The event was jointly organized by IndianGeotechnical Society, Kochi Chapter and Association of Piling Specialists, Kochi.The annual lecture was delivered on the topic “Geotechnical Professional Prac-tices in India-The Challenges and Opportunities – some Case studies” by Dr. V.S. Raju, an exceptional talent who has contributed to the growth of GeotechnicalEngineering in the country.

The selected seven finalists of the competition presented their theses before thejudges for the final evaluation on 9th2015 at AISAT. The authors of the best fivetheses among the finalists were honored with certificates of appreciation. Thefinalists were selected from a good number of M-Tech candidates from all overthe state.

Procomp-an annualproject competition forthe Final year B. Techstudents, jointly orga-nized by the Graduate’sAssociation of Consult-ant Engineers and De-partment of Civil Engi-neering, AISAT hasbeen hosted with pridefor the third time. Theever rolling trophysponsored by the CivilEngineering Department of AISAT and a cash prize of Rs. 20,000/-, was awardedto the winning team.

Out of the 23 abstracts received, 18 projects were shortlisted for final presenta-tion. The Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya prize for the best project was bagged byMs. Manisha Anil, Jillu Jose, Maria Antony and Jose B Thomas of Amal JyothiCollege of Engineering, Kanjirappally. AISAT hosted the prestigious inauguration of the academic activities of Federa-tion of Registered Civil engineers (FORCE), on 17th2015 in the presence of thefinest personalities from the Civil engineering industry in the state. FORCE is acommon forum where the established Civil engineering associations includingGRACE, IGS, ICI, Kerala PWD Graduate Engineers Association, Association ofStructural and Geotechnical consultants and Association of Construction Engi-neers join hands for a common objective to elevate the glory of Civil engineeringprofession and also for attaining the rights of a civil engineer.

The academic activities were inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Clement Valluvassery,Manager-AISAT. Dr. Babu T. Jose, Director, AISAT, Dr. Anil Joseph, PresidentFORCE, Sri S.R.C Nair,Sri. The Popsicle StickBridge Competitionheld at AISAT on Sep-tember 23rdwas agreat success with ac-tive participation fromseveral engineeringcolleges across thestate. The competitionhas been organized aspart of the academicactivities of FORCE(Federation of Regis-tered Civil engineers).The model crafted by the students from Sree Buddha College of Engineering,Pattoor secured the first prize. The fifth semester students of AISAT, Rintu Kurian,Rehitha Reghu, Sanah Fathima and Zebah Navas secured second prize and SCMSKarukutty bagged the third prizes. The judging panel included experts from bothacademia and industry.

AISAT being an ICI studentchapter, is an active partner of all ICI activities and was the venue of Crescere’14.The much awaited final round of Crescere’15 will be held later as a grand event.

Bridge the GapBridge the GapBridge the GapBridge the GapBridge the GapBridge the Gap technical lecture series 2015 was conducted for third semestercivil engineering students from 22nd - 26th June with an objective to equip thestudents to confront practical civil engineering issues and to come up with theirsolutions. Students had several enlightening sessions on rainwater harvesting,methods of conservation and efficient usage of rainwater by the faculty mem-bers of Civil Engineering Department. Prof. Unnikartha, HoD, Civil EngineeringDepartment, FISAT delivered a talk on “Prospects in Civil engineering” for thestudents on 30th June as a follow up session. The talk was indeed an interactiveone with enthusiastic participation from the students.

International Airport Limited on 24th June 2015. Students had the opportunityto visit the construction site of the new terminal at the airport and had anilluminative experience in which they were enriched with practical aspectsand the quality standards to be maintained at the site..

Third semester M-Tech students carried out a one month industrial trainingduring December 2015.

The Sixth Semester Civil Engineering Students had a five day Industrial visitcum study tour to Bangalore, Mysore and Coorg from 21st to 26th January2016. During the course of the journey, the students visited M/S GreenReadymade Steel Products India Pvt. Ltd. in Kollar District, Karnataka. Theindustry was specialized in providing readymade cut and bend steel and groutcouplers for huge construction projects. The demonstration in the work yardenriched the students with updated information on reducing the steel wast-age during stirrup formations.

Ms. Sanah Fathima and Ms. Zebah Navas of 3rd year underwent a 10 dayindustrial training at Kochi metro rail project.

The students also got the opportunity to visit the well known Visvesvaraya Indus-trial and Technological Museum at Bengaluru and also a flyover construction sitein Mysore.

The fourth semes-ter B.Tech CivilEngineering stu-dents visited IdukkiHydro ElectricProject area on28th February2015. Students hadthe opportunity tohave a detailedlook through the massive structures of Cheruthoni dam and Idukki damwhich are the predominant components of the Idukki Hydroelectric project.The Idukki dam is a parabolic double curvature thin arch dam which hails asthe prestigious project of KSEB, Kerala. The dam was commissioned on12th February 1976, with the title as one of the highestarch damsAsia. Stu-dents were highly benefitted from the visit by closely experiencing the fea-tures of an exceptional civil engineering marvel.

Seventh semester Civil engineering students had undergone industrial train-ing from 29th June to 5th July. During the visit, students were enriched withpractical aspects about the setting out of buildings, basics of foundation struc-tures, reinforcement etc. The whole program was worthwhile for the stu-dents and immensely helped them to widen their engineering knowledge.

A talk was held on 19th March 2015, as part of theseries – ‘Meet your elders in Profession’ . The talkwas delivered by Smt. Jolly Thomas, Retd. Supdt.Engr, Kerala Water Authority. She spoke about oneof the most crucial topics of the moment, ‘Water Con-servation’ as we observe March 22ndthe World wa-ter day. She enlightened the students about the needof water conservation and discussed about the criti-cal issues related to water consumption and treat-ment. She also gave awareness about the presentscenario of water shortage and the tremendous needfor water conservation.

On AISAT day , 26th February 2015, ACEA released the second issue of ACEANews bulletin. “Srishti”, an annual bulletin which gives an insight about theevents and experiences witnessed by the Civil Engineering department duringevery year.

AISAT Civil Engineering Association (ACEA) commemorated ACEA day on26th2015. The Civil engineering department of AISAT celebrated the day byorganizingCreatrix’2k15– an inter-collegiate technical fest exclusivelyfor the Civil Engineering studentsfrom various engineering colleges.The day was eventful with an arrayof contests which includes ‘Eureka’-The Quiz competition, ‘Tasarim’-The Poster making, ‘Regalo’- ThePower point presentation and ‘Ojo’-The Picture dialogue. All the contestshad excellent participation from bothexternal and home teams.

The valedictory functionofCreatrix’2k15and theclosing of ACEA day cel-ebrations was inauguratedby Mr. K.V. Abdul Azeez,Chairman and Managing Di-rector, Skyline Builders whois a pioneer in implementingthe concept of apartmenthousing in Kerala. The clos-ing ceremony was honoredby the presence of Rev. Dr.Clement Valluvassery, Man-ager-AISAT, Rev. Fr. Alex Kurishuparambil, Associate Manager-AISAT, Prof.Dr. Babu T. Jose, HoD of Civil and Director-AISAT, Dr. Anil Joseph, MD,Geostructurals Pvt. Ltd. and adjunct faculty, Prof. Dr. K.E. George, Principal-AISAT and Prof. Vincent K. John, Vice Principal. During the ceremony the chiefguest releasedSrishti– the second issue of the Civil department bulletin by pre-senting it to Rev. Fr. Alex Kurishuparambil. The winning teams of the contestswere honoured in the occasion with cash prizes, certificates and mementos.

The winning teams of the quiz competition were appreciated with gifts fromUltraTech cements Ltd. The proficiency awards for the university toppers andthe trophies for the winners of the beam casting competition held for fifth semes-ter students were also distributed at the event. The ACEA day celebrations con-cluded in the presence of Heads and faculty members of all departments.

The activities of AISAT Civil Engineering Association (ACEA) for theacademic year 2015-16 were inaugurated on 24th July 2015. The inauguralfunction was preceded by a technical talk delivered by Mr. ShivaprakashGangappa, Product Segment Manager-Admixtures, Fosroc Chemicals (India)Pvt Ltd. on the use of Admixtures in Concrete. He gave a detailed presentationabout the good points in using admixtures and its escalating demand in theconcrete industry. The interactive session thereafter was followed by theinaugural function.

Prof. Vincent K. John, Vice Principal & President ACEA welcomed theguests and friends of AISAT Civil engineering department to the inauguralceremony. The meeting was presided over by Rev. Dr. Clement Valluvassery,Manager, AISAT. The chief guest Mr. M. Mohan Kumar, NationalSpecifications Manager, Fosroc Chemicals (India) Pvt Ltd. inaugurated ACEAactivities for the academic year 2015-16.

Ms Sanah Fathima and Joshua Roy Paul of S6 secured third prize in the annual paperpresentation contest , Avanza 15 organised at AISAT on 21st February 2015.

AutodeskRevit Challenge persuadesstudents to create innovativebuilding and constructiondesigns using AutodeskRevit building design soft-ware, specifically built forBIM, with features for Ar-chitectural design, MEP, Structural Engineering, and Construction. Students wereasked to create building designs by using the Autodesk Revit Architecture whichwas judged by industry experts. The award was presented in a function held atDayanand Sagar University, Bangalore on 7th November 2015. The award con-sists of a medal and certificate in addition to a cash prize worth Rs. 21,000.

A team consisting of Dr. Babu T Jose, Dr. Jimmy Thomas andDr. Renjitha Mary Varghese conducted a site investigation on20th November 2015 for the project “Reinstatement of settledapproaches of bridges at Parechal and Grameenchira onNattukom – Thiruvathukkal road, Kottayam”. Site investiga-tion was undertaken as a result of an agreement with KeralaPWD, Ernakulam and an interim report based on the studywas submitted. Experimental investigations are being carriedout at Geotechnical Engineering Lab, AISAT under the super-vision of Dr. Renjitha Mary Varghese.
