P remier’s Reading Challenge [PRC] Judith Graley, Member of Parliament, presented at the Friday 11th November assembly,

certificates to those students who had read 100 books or more in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. The students were: FSM Harini 1HG Hayley 1/2RG Audrey 3SH Paru 3SH Vilara 4CP Matthew 5LF Natharie 5LF Hannah 5LF Brishti 5SM Jahsan 6JA Sandavi 6JP Sapna Every student in FLP and 3LM reached this goal. Well done to Lyn and Leanne, and their students! Annette stated that it is such a huge achievement for Grade 5 and 6 to reach 100 books as the novels they need to read are large in text and need a greater depth of understanding. It takes many, many hours to accumulate this massive amount of books, so we are really impressed by the dedication shown by these students. Annette detailed some facts about our school’s involvement in the PRC. Although we had always taken part in the Challenge, three years ago our Principal, Jim Bell, decided to make it an integral part of our curriculum. In our first year, we had 80% of our school sign up to take part, and of those students, 85% completed the challenge. Last year was a very exciting year as we had, for the first time ever, 100% participation and completion. The education department interviewed us for a story on our success and we were on the departmental website as an example of schools who strive to do better each year with their reading and comprehension.

This year, once again, we had 100% of all our participants complete the challenge, and our number of students reaching 100 books more than doubled. It is worthwhile noting that our student numbers have increased significantly in this time which makes the achievement even more impressive!!

C ommunity Spirit and Leadership Award Judith Graley, MP, also presented Ewan

Dorning from 4CV with this year’s Community Spirit and Leadership Award. Ewan consistently demonstrates Brentwood Park’s values of respect, responsibility, excellence and teamwork. He is someone who can be relied upon to carry out tasks efficiently and always to the best of his abilities. On the weekend, when Ewan is not playing football for Narre Warren Magpies, he can be found picking up papers at the local lake. Ewan has a lake near his house which has a family of ducks. To help keep the ducks safe and the environment clean, Ewan regularly cleans the area of rubbish. Ewan has developed his skills and interests in computers through helping his dad with his computer programming. Ewan has made suggestions for a program called R.U.O.K? This program allows patients in hospital to communicate with friends and family. ANZAC Day holds a special place in the Dorning family’s heart. Ewan’s dad had been in the Australian Army Corp. Every year, they march to honour the men and women of the Armed Forces. Ewan has a younger sister, who he cares about – he is a great ‘big-brother’. Besides playing football, Ewan enjoys riding his bike at the BMX track, building with his Lego, and laying in his bean bag watching TV. Ewan’s previous grade three teachers also spoke highly of Ewan, believing him to be a worthy recipient and an ‘awesome’ student! Ewan’s parents were very proud of Ewan and his sister Morgan was very excited about his award.

P arking Please consider our neighbours when parking.

We have a complaint that parents are parking their cars in and across our neighbours’ driveways which is causing considerable inconvenience and upset.

F acilities Update - Additional Classrooms With a projected enrolment now standing at 664 students for 2017, Brentwood Park Primary

School was in desperate need of additional teaching spaces! Thankfully, and with forward planning, this week, we took possession of four brand new additional portable classrooms! They were delivered and sited today but services will be connected next week. Furniture has already been ordered and is scheduled for delivery next month! It is a great feeling, knowing that our facilities and staffing will all be finalized before the end of this month!! Understandably, the delivery and siting of our classrooms created a buzz of excitement amongst the children!!

C hinese Delegation The Chinese delegation from Tianjin Municipal Education stated that their visit to Brentwood

Park was very informative. They were keen to visit classrooms and see how the Victorian curriculum is taught in a government school. Judy provided them with details about our VCOP writing program.

Marina explained her mathematical groupings in order to differentiate the numeracy program.

Heather demonstrated the steps of the CAFÉ reading program.

The delegates were interested in how our parent volunteers assisted the students’ learning. Tracey and Shama were pasting in the weekly homework task sheet in the students’ homework books and also the individual spelling words for each student in their spelling books.

Loreli in 1/2RG presented her Passion Project on Butterflies to the Chinese delegates. Loreli quickly learnt to present a fact then allow the interpreter to translate her fact in Chinese. The delegates were very impressed with her outstanding project.

Jo and 6JD were excited to present their programming of their robots to move in the outline of a shape.

The delegates were very much interested in the vibrant displays in our corridors and in our classrooms.

They felt welcome in FLP with the Chinese decorations

FSM students presented each of the delegates with a koala and in return the delegates presented the students with a small gift. The delegates were very interested in how Chunyan taught our students the Chinese language and culture.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
