I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, whatever you’re celebrating this winter season. The past year has brought many new and exciting things to our city. Many developments (the Hotel, Fuse, & CVS) are scheduled to deliver in in the new year, while new developments are beginning now or early in the new year (the Cambria Hotel at Pontiac and Baltimore Avenue and the Lidl grocery store). Whole Foods is also scheduled to deliver in mid-late 2017. I’m personally excited about biking down the Trolley Trail to access that new development in Riverdale Park. Note: Upon completion of the Cambria Hotel (the building immediately north of the new CVS outside of Berwyn/Lakeland), the bottom portion of Pontiac will be repaved by the developer. Early next year, the new Art House will be opened at the former Barking Dog location along Baltimore Avenue. The venue will be the first restaurant and performing arts venue in our downtown area. Additionally, the city will continue negotiations with UMD on the proposal to convert the Calvert Road school into a daycare. The deal would preserve a historic asset and provide an amenity to CP residents, including daycare and community meeting space. The bioswale project on Rhode Island, between Greenbelt Road and Tecumseh, has been delayed due to the contractor needing to clear scrub trees that are entangled in the electrical wires. They are scheduled to resume in January. I’ve been checking in with staff to make sure that adjacent neighbors are getting proper notice of these changes. If you need additional information, please reach out to Steve Beavers ([email protected]). As I’ve expressed previously, the bioswale project will eventually close Rhode Island Avenue into Berwyn and help to inform the neighborhood about the need for a more permanent closure to address the motor/pedestrian/bicycle conflict we’re experiencing at Greenbelt Rhode and Rhode Island Avenue. That, paired with the recent acquisition of the Washington Post property east of the Trolley Trail, will create new challenges for us to solve. More to come on that property acquisition - I’m waiting for the city’s planning dept. to provide additional details regarding the identity of the buyer and their intent for use. I’m also excited by the prospect of approving the city’s first solar installation in 2017 at our Youth and Family Services building. I am also excited to introduce the proposal of a city art fund that developers will be able to contribute towards to fund public art projects throughout our city. As always, for questions about these projects and other projects you might be hearing about, please reach out to me, Monroe, or call city hall. Hi Berwyn! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! I

hope you all have a wonderful holiday, whatever

you’re celebrating this winter season.

The past year has brought many new and exciting

things to our city. Many developments (the Hotel,

Fuse, & CVS) are scheduled to deliver in in the new

year, while new developments are beginning now or

early in the new year (the Cambria Hotel at Pontiac

and Baltimore Avenue and the Lidl grocery store).

Whole Foods is also scheduled to deliver in mid-late

2017. I’m personally excited about biking down the

Trolley Trail to access that new development in

Riverdale Park.

Note: Upon completion of the Cambria Hotel (the

building immediately north of the new CVS outside

of Berwyn/Lakeland), the bottom portion of Pontiac

will be repaved by the developer.

Early next year, the new Art House will be opened

at the former Barking Dog location along Baltimore

Avenue. The venue will be the first restaurant and

performing arts venue in our downtown area.

Additionally, the city will continue negotiations with

UMD on the proposal to convert the Calvert Road

school into a daycare. The deal would preserve a

historic asset and provide an amenity to CP

residents, including daycare and community

meeting space.

The bioswale project on Rhode Island, between

Greenbelt Road and Tecumseh, has been delayed

due to the contractor needing to clear scrub trees

that are entangled in the electrical wires. They are

scheduled to resume in January. I’ve been checking

in with staff to make sure that adjacent neighbors

are getting proper notice of these changes. If you

need additional information, please reach out to

Steve Beavers ([email protected]).

As I’ve expressed previously, the bioswale project

will eventually close Rhode Island Avenue into

Berwyn and help to inform the neighborhood about

the need for a more permanent closure to address

the motor/pedestrian/bicycle conflict we’re

experiencing at Greenbelt Rhode and Rhode Island

Avenue. That, paired with the recent acquisition of

the Washington Post property east of the Trolley

Trail, will create new challenges for us to

solve. More to come on that property acquisition -

I’m waiting for the city’s planning dept. to provide

additional details regarding the identity of the buyer

and their intent for use.

I’m also excited by the prospect of approving the

city’s first solar installation in 2017 at our Youth and

Family Services building. I am also excited to

introduce the proposal of a city art fund that

developers will be able to contribute towards to

fund public art projects throughout our city.

As always, for questions about these projects and

other projects you might be hearing about, please

As we approach the December holidays and the

long school break, its important to be extremely

diligent in taking extra precautions and reporting

any and all suspicious behavior. Berwyn typically

sees an increase of break-ins and burglaries during

the holiday season as students leave for breaks and

many people are out of town for extended periods.

Student rentals have been typically been

targeted in the past. It is particularly important to

remain aware of your surroundings and the

precautions you can take.

• Report any and all suspicious activity

immediately. See someone looking in your

neighbor’s window? Report it. Observe an

unknown person “casing” houses? Report it. Call

911 or the police non-emergency at 301-352-

1200. Keep in mind that the same operators

monitor both line, so please call either. The

police will prioritize the response based on the

nature of the event. And if you wish to remain

anonymous, you can do so. You are not required

to leave your name.

• Keep your doors and windows locked at all

times. Even when you’re home.

• Have packages delivered to your work address

or to an Amazon Locker to reduce the chance of

them being taken from your door, if delivered

when no one is home.

• Always lock your car and do not leave any

valuables in the car. Not even out of sight.

• Leave lights on when you’re not at home (light

timers are pretty inexpensive and effective.)

Make sure all exterior lights are working.

Consider upgrading to outside lights with motion

sensors.

• Tell a trusted neighbor if you will be out of town

and make sure they have your contact

information. You can also schedule the police to

conduct premise checks on your home while

you’re away. Email Cpl. Juan Nunez at

[email protected] or call him at 240-695-

7493

• As student rentals are usually targeted during

the holidays, please reach out to your student

neighbors and make sure they have this

information.

We can all take simple actions to help reduce the

risk of crime during the holiday season. Berwyn is a

great community of caring neighbors, so let’s all

share in the responsibility to stay alert, aware, and

proactive!
