FLOODING THREAT OF 2010 This year with the huge amount of snowfall and subsequent thaw and the rains of late winter/ early spring, the community was faced with the threat of possible flooding, particularly from the Allegheny River, which when it crests over 26 feet, causes flooding in the Sycamore and Cherry Street areas of our community. Emergency Management officials of the Borough began to take action immediately. Letters were delivered to over five hundred homes on March 5, telling residents that the possibility of flooding existed and that preparations were the best de- fense. The Borough’s Radio Station, 1670 AM, continued to broadcast updates to the threat and actions residents could take in preparation. A second letter was delivered March 11, reiterating the possibility of flooding and advising residents that if they needed assistance moving large items out of their basement to contact the Borough. In anticipation of this event, a team of volunteers was assembled thanks to the generosity of Hosanna Industries, the Shaler Area School District and the Etna Volunteer Fire Department. In complete cooperation with the Public Works Department on Friday, March 12, twenty-eight high school students, ten workers from Hosanna Industries and four volunteer firemen spent the day mov- ing items from residents’ basements out of harms way. These same people came back the following week and assisted residents with putting the items back in the basement when the threat had passed. The Community was truly blessed blessed that the flooding threat passed and blessed with these organizations and individuals who came to our aid in helping our residents to prepare. Many government agencies were instrumental in preparation as well, including the Allegheny County Department of Emergency Management who kept the community informed daily of the flood stage status and the Army Corps of Engineers. State Representative Dom Costa along with State Repre- sentative Randy Vulakovich hosted meetings to keep local Emergency Management officials up to date on conditions. Shaler Township hired a contractor early in the week of March 8 th , to remove any trees along Big Pine Creek in Shaler that were a threat to cause or contribute to flooding. We are grateful to all for their part in these preparations and grateful that flooding did not occur. BOROUGH COUNCIL NEWS The Etna Police Department received a grant of $100,000.00 from the Department of Justice for technical equipment improvements to aid in crime prevention. The Borough will use these funds to install cameras at various locations throughout the community to aid in both crime prevention and crime solving. Through the Allegheny County Tourism and Infrastructure Fund, the Borough has received roughly $101,000.00 for the design of a replacement bridge superstructure at the Dewey Street Bridge. The Borough is currently working with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Congressmen Doyle & Altmire for the construction funds needed for this replacement totaling over $645,000.00. Through Allegheny County, the Borough has been awarded a grant for the repair of a storm sewer in the amount of $56,648.00 with the Borough coming up with the remaining $30,000.00 needed and a grant for $10,000.00 for the demolition of an abandoned home on Lincoln Street. The Borough and the Garden Club received a grant of Technical Assistance from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy for green and sustainable improvement planning for the community. BUSINESS

SPOTLIGHT

GATEWAY

PEST CONTROL 595 Butler Street

412-784-8180

Bill (Founder of Gateway Exterminating)

and Dorothy Sandrock were both born and

raised in Etna; Bill lived on Mt. Hope Street

and Dorothy resided on Hickory Street.

Bill had many assorted jobs over the years,

usually as a salesman, but one year he was

hired as an exterminator and decided this was a

job he could do by himself. So, he and Doro-

thy (who thought up the name for the com-

pany) decided to go into business for them-

selves. Dorothy worked full time as a recep-

tionist in Sharpsburg while raising their three

children …Nancy, Bill and Mary. Bill started

the company in 1965 and worked out of their

home. He subsidized their meager income

while getting their new business off the ground

by working as a part time bus driver. Some-

how, Dorothy also managed to perform all of

the bookkeeping duties for their new company.

Bill originally worked out of the family car and

the children say they can never remember hav-

ing a vehicle that didn’t smell of chemicals.

After approximately one year, Bill was able

to hire two new employees. Time passed and

business improved. They opened the Etna store

at its current location in 1979.

Young Bill started to work part time when

he was sixteen. Nancy joined the family busi-

ness in the late 70’s and Mary began work in

1983. They now employ 14, including family

members and have a dozen service vehicles.

They take care of carpenter bees, carpenter

ants, wasps, centipedes, millipedes, fleas, ter-

mites, spiders, mice and rats. Many of their

calls involve the eradication of rats. Bird seed

is a very attractive source of food for rats. So,

if you have feeders, make sure you clean up the

extra bird food that falls out so that it doesn’t

attract rodents. Also, the protein that’s in dog

feces also holds great appeal for rats, so it be-

hooves you to clean up after your pets. Re-

member, the next time you run into a swarming

insect nest, or find some creepy, crawling

something under your kitchen sink, call Gate-

way Pest Control. They’ll be happy to help.

Thank you for your continued support of the ETNA VOLUNTEER FIRE

DEPARTMENT’S Lenten Fish Fries. Many of the same faces showed up week after

week. The turnout was fantastic and the food was scrumptious! Thanks again!!!

ler Street. Remember to thank those men and women, both past and present, whose

sacrifices have assisted in upholding world peace and the freedom that we Americans

enjoy every day living in this glorious country! We have much to be thankful for!!!

STANDING OVATION

It’s hard to believe that only a few months ago we were waist deep in mounds of

white, wonderful snow. Many, many, many thanks to our amazing Public Works De-

partment. They worked long, tedious hours shoveling, plowing, salting and removing

the mountains of fluffy flakes that Mother Nature decided to bless us with.

Ed Murdy, our Public Works Director, deserves special praise for coordinating the

snow removal effort. Keith Taylor, Rich Sweazen, John Kirin and Mark Eichhorn, our

Public Works Crew, should be applauded for overcoming the never-ending task of

February’s snow removal with efficiency and speed. No one’s streets were cleaned as

quickly or as well as Etna’s!!!!

Thanks also must be extended to our Police Department who helped wherever

they were needed and our Fire Department, who cleared away snow from all of the

Borough’s fire hydrants, in case of fire, which thankfully, didn’t happen.

Thanks must also go out to four of our local subcontractors who contacted the

Borough directly and asked if they could help in any way; Kusevich Contracting,

who gave us a full day of free labor, as well as Precision Landscaping, Roadside

Beer Distributors and Bobeck Construction. Thanks to all for a job well done!!!!

Happy Retirement to a Friend

On August 1, after 21 years, or as he says with a

chuckle, "after four different decades," Pastor Neumann

will be retiring from Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grant

and Highland Avenues. His calling to the ministry was

not, however, right after college. After graduating from

Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania, he was drafted

into the Army for two years and after his tour of service,

he became a management supervisor with Atlantic Richfield Oil Company

in New Haven, Connecticut. It was not until 1977, after much prayerful consid-

eration, he felt led to the ministry and he and his wife Linda and new

born daughter Christina, sold their house in Wallingford, Connecticut and

returned to Pittsburgh where he began his ministerial studies at Pitts-

burgh Theological Seminary. He graduated from the Lutheran Theologi-

cal Seminary at Gettysburg and was ordained in 1981. After serving two

other Lutheran churches in Pittsburgh, he came to Emmanuel in February of

1989.

He lives in Cherry City with his wife Linda and daughter Christina in the

house which his grandfather built in 1916. He and Linda also have a son,

Jonathan, who, with his wife Larissa and children, Zhana age 3 and Ellie

age 1, live in Mountain View, California. Pastor and Linda are looking

forward to spending some extended time with the family out there, enjoy-

ing the fun of "grandparenting." As a youngster, Pastor Neumann recalls

visiting his grandparents back in the 1950's and 60's and enjoyed going

with his aunt and uncle to Murphy's 5 and 10, Isaly's and A & P. He

has fond memories of his early visits to Etna and could not have imag-

ined back then, t hat a great port ion o f his life would have been

spent here, having grown up around the Greensburg area.

One of his parishioners commented that Pastor's sermons are inspiring,

instilling deep faith and he is a kind, caring person, ready to help anyone

in need. Those whose homes in Etna were severely damaged by the flood

in 2004 can attest to that. Emmanuel opened its doors to all flood victims

where they could get cleaned up, receive good hot meals and find support in

the long recovery process. Countless volunteers from the community and

far beyond assisted in giving aid in many ways through the cleaning and

repairing of homes for the next few years. Pastor Neumann wishes to thank

the countless number of caring people who shared their time, talents and

treasures to make this all possible. The flood played havoc on many citi-

zens, but the loving kindness of so many folks was great to beho ld.

Thank you Pastor Neumann for helping to bring this together. We hope

you and the family stay in Etna and we can meet up on occasion. In the

meantime, ENJOY!

Happenings On Main Street

Design Committee

The Design Committee is working on several projects for “Main Street”. One is to install several donated

benches (courtesy of Forms and Surfaces) and several donated planters (gift from John O’Connor, Kress

Detailing Shop). The Committee is also examining designs and costs for new refuse and recycling

containers as well as the cost of replacing our current pedestrian sidewalk street lighting with cost-saving

LED lights. Ongoing projects include the search for owners who will allow us to construct decorative

displays in their vacant storefronts as well as a plan to refurbish the Walnut Street parking lot in a “green

sustainable design.” The Design Committee will also be working with Western Pennsylvania

Conservancy in the near future on several projects that will benefit our community.

Promotions Committee

The Promotions Committee recently installed “sandwich board” signage along Butler Street bringing to

the attention of re-routed motorists traveling through our community about the availability, affordability

and opportunity to establish business in Etna! In addition, the committee is examining a co-operative

promotion with businesses in the creation and distribution of cloth, “sustainable” shopping bags for Etna

customers to use. They are also in the early preparations for the Fifth Annual Etna Heritage Ball,

scheduled this year for Saturday, September 11, 2010

Organization Committee

The Organization Committee held a “Spaghetti Western” dinner/movie combo in February for the

community. All those attending had a great time. They are also currently working on getting a

membership card developed for the use of current and future EEDC members. This will be an annual card

that will offer members special deals and discounts from participating merchants in Etna. We are also

working on an EEDC fundraising event, in conjunction with the Scare House, scheduled for October.

Finally, we are working hard to put the finishing touches on an EEDC web site that will be soon up and

running. Look for it’s unveiling in the next few months.

Economic Restructuring Committee

During the 1st quarter of this year the Economic Restructuring Committee (ERC) created and mailed a

survey to the Etna business community. The committee will study the survey results to guide our future

efforts. We also hope to create a database of Etna businesses, which will help relay pertinent information

more quickly and economically in the future. ERC also has planned quarterly business socials called

Wet Wednesday events for 2010. The first of these informal gatherings was held in February at Porky’s

Plain Old Bar on Bridge Street. The purpose of this event is to allow business owners to not only meet

EEDC members, but also other business owners. You might be surprised what you have in common!

ERC continues to monitor openings and closings of businesses in our community.

THE SEASON OF SPRING …. A TIME OF PROMISE AND GROWTH!

Hello Everyone,

The members of the Etna Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) hopes that you and your

family have all recovered from the snow, cold and ice of this past winter and are now enjoying the

sunshine, blooms, fragrances and even the beautiful new green grass sprouting up (even if it means we

have to mow it)! Spring time is a season of newness, promise and hope. Just as our expectations rise, just

like the morning sun, it is the hopes of this new season that our lives, jobs and our overall position in life

will show promise and improve.

Here in Etna, the EEDC continues to experience our own “promise of spring” in our business community.

During the past year we have seen a number of storefronts renovated with over $50,000 invested in their

improvements, and with over a half dozen more facades scheduled to be remodeled this spring and

summer. We have seen new businesses open, meaning new neighbors, new jobs and new products and

services available to the Etna community.

We kicked off a “social networking party” for our business friends with the introduction of “Wet

Wednesdays” which was launched in February and our next one is scheduled for May 5, 2010! We are

preparing for the unveiling of a new EEDC web site, which will provide you with access to the most

current business and consumer news for Etna residents, not to mention information on our local

businesses, their hours of operation and their various offerings. Don’t be surprised to see some special

surprise deals as well! Talking about deals and special offerings, if you join the EEDC you’ll soon be

receiving a membership card loaded with special discounts and deals for only EEDC members! To get

more information about the EEDC and its member benefits, provide us with your email address for the

latest EEDC news and updates. Send your info to: [email protected]

So you want a change in your life? A change in your community? Then get involved…join the EEDC.

There are opportunities galore for you to lend your opinion, expertise, knowledge and skills to make

Etna’s shopping district and your community in general the place that everyone wants to live in!

ETNA BOROUGH POOL AND PLAYGROUND RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. The metal admittance tag must be sewn on the lower left side of the bathing suit. There are no exceptions to this rule. Otherwise, bathers will not be admitted to the pool. It will cost $3.00 to replace a lost tag. All tags reported lost will be reported to the admittance staff. Anyone entering with a reported lost tag will be ejected from the pool.

2. Please be certain your child, while at the playground or pool, knows where you can be

reached in the event he or she is injured. If the child is injured and needs a doctor, the staff or Borough Police will get the child to a doctor available at that time. In the past, there were times when a child was injured and did not know where his or her parents were.

3. Please make sure your child knows where to go in case the pool is closed due to rain.

There will be no refunds or rain checks given in the event of rain.

4. Do not permit your child to go swimming if he or she has any skin disease, mouth disease, sore throat or deep cuts – bandaged or not, nor too soon after eating. Children in diapers will not be permitted in the pool unless a tight fitting outer covering, plastic or rubber, is worn. All children eight years old and under must be accompanied by an individual 13 years or older.

5. Instruct your child that the playground and pool personnel are there for their protection and

their orders must be followed, otherwise the child will be asked to leave the premises. Legal action will be initiated against those who are flagrant violators.

6. Tell your child not to bring valuables to the pool. The Borough is not responsible for lost

items.

7. The Borough will not be responsible for stolen bicycles or damage to them.

8. Bathing caps are not required. Do not wear makeup or skin oil. This will help make the filters and chlorinators operate more efficiently. No chewing gum.

9. Swimming aids such as inner tubes, beach balls, floats, etc. will not be permitted in the

pool. Pushing, dunking, and games of tag are prohibited.

10. Animals are not permitted in the pool or playground.

11. Please observe the smoking sections. Smoking is prohibited in all other areas.

12. Eyeglasses (including sunglasses) with safety lenses will be permitted in the shallow end of the pool (not beyond the four foot marker) and patrons wearing them do so at their own risk.

Your cooperation in making this season safe and enjoyable for your child will be appreciated. Each dollar spent for the recreation and well being of your child is worthwhile. If you have any questions regarding the rules and regulations, please call the Etna Borough Office at: 412-781-0569.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY SUMMER
