Happy summer 2016! June 20th marked our official 1st day of summer with the Summer Solstice. For those of us wanting more time, that’s as good as it gets. You can’t get more hours in a day, but the Summer Solstice gives us fourteen hours of daylight in one day. You can use that time to be productive, or you can use that time to bask in the sun at the beach. Either way, it’s our time in the sun just North of the 30th parallel and you can’t deny that this is a great place to call home.
This past weekend I went on an overnight canoe trip with my son, a few of our Pack 271 Cub Scout fathers and sons in Milton, FL, which is on the Blackwater River. We’re following that up with a tour of the restoration project of Tiawassee Creek led by our own Ashley
Campbell, with the City of Daphne. Then, we had a play day at Bear Point Marina in Orange Beach. Many of us say things like this in passing without realizing that there aren’t that many people in this world that can lay claim to living in such an awesome place. We need to embrace this local biosphere and appreciate the attributes and character it heavily lends towards our lifestyle.
Our pools are staying busy. The new chaise lounges look great and have been well received. We’ve still got new tables and
chairs on the way for the Montclair pool. While mostly everyone has been enjoying the pools, we’ve had a few incidents in which Rob has had to intervene. Please remember that children under 16 have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed inside the fences. The pools close at 7PM. If there is an emergency, please call 911. If there is a problem with people not doing what they’re supposed to do, please call Daphne Police at 621-9100.
We have formally requested the City of Daphne to consider installing 4 way stop signs at the intersection of Champions Way and Ridgewood Dr. This is a heavily used intersection, with a high potential for accidents. So, be on the lookout; you may have to “STOP” soon. We have also formally requested the City of Daphne to consider helping control the speed of traffic on Bay View Dr. We’ve had several accidents recently and it is a consistent speed zone.
Of course, it’s not the folks obeying the 25MPH speed limit that are causing problems, but all in all, we need to slow down.
In June, the City of Daphne completed the asphalt trail on the southern side of the eastern parcel of the Central Park. The very next day, we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new gazebo on the site. We had a great turnout. The gazebo is a collaborative effort of the Daphne Beautification Committee, the city council and city employees. The next project regarding the trail is a new trail head at the Swim and Racquet Club. In the years to come, the city will complete the loop of the trail along Tiawassee creek, leading back to Lake Shore Drive. Eventually, we’ll have a new bridge for foot traffic across Tiawassee, and a trail to the parking lot at the 19th Hole. There are many minds at work to connect this trail system to Jubilee Square and Gator Alley, as well as our new side walks leading to Champions Way. Many thanks to all of you who are making this dream a reality!
We are also talking with the City of Daphne about a possible partnership and
lease agreement with our boat ramp at the marina. While the details are still yet to be hammered out, we’re looking for improvements for our ramp, dock, parking area and boat channel. The city is looking for a viable boat launch for Daphne residents and the Search and Rescue team. This is not a new idea. It has been discussed for over 20 years that I know of. For some reason or another, it has fallen through. If we come to terms with a mutually beneficial arrangement with the city, it may just happen this year. Our Vice President, Victoria Phelps, gave a great slide show presentation of the marina at the city council’s work session in June. It was well presented and well received.
As far as our capital improvements go, the bathroom remodel at the Yacht Club is underway, and will hopefully be completed by the time you read this. We’re planning on picking up where we left off on the landscaping at the Montclair pool after the pools close. We’ve still got a bulkhead at the marina to rebuild. HMR is helping us with the design
and soliciting bids. The Ridgewood pool is next on our radar. We’re just barely keeping the tennis courts patched together. They’ll need some love soon. The Montclair landscaping and bulkhead blow out took a little steam out of rebuilding the 19th hole. It’s still going to have to happen, but we may be a year off. Our plan is to get all of our current amenities updated and properly maintained, and then move on to rebuilding the 19th hole and Yacht Club. Like everything else, it just takes time and money, but we’ll get there.
Camps are in full swing for golf, tennis and the stables. Kids are out at the pools, on the side walks, and unfortunately even on the streets. Please watch out for them. If you can stand the heat, there’s a beautiful sunset almost every evening on the deck at the yacht club. I hope you enjoy your summer!

On June 8th, Lake Forest partnered with the City of Daphne and Daphne Public Works to do the ribbon cutting of the new gazebo at Central Park in Lake Forest. Board President Steve Sasser, Vice President Victoria Phelps, Treasurer Mary Ann Hampton, Mayor Dane Haygood, City Councilors John Lake, Ron Scott and Public Works Director Richard Johnson were all present.
Happy 4th of July! Your Yacht Club will be open Monday the 4th, for viewing the fireworks. Because of the large crowd anticipated we will run a limited menu. There is a playground for the kids, plenty of viewing area and some ice cold beer. The best view in
Baldwin County is from your Yacht Club.
The pool season began May 1st. We still have members who have not reactivated their pool passes. If you have not done so, please come to the office to get it done. It’s free and quick. All three pools are open from 8:00am to 7:00pm except for Swim & Racquet, which opens at 5:00 am for lap swimmers.
The Yacht Club has many family priced
oriented nights and a swing set play area for the kids. The BOGO burger night is huge! It’s a great deal and a great meal for Lake Forest members. Thursday night is family night, with an all you can eat buffet with salads, entrees and a dessert. The Yacht Club is open to all members of Lake Forest. The best part is the FREE part, which is the most beautiful setting on the Eastern Shore.
Thanks to an effort spearheaded by Lura Kauffman and contributions by the LF Women’s Club, the LF Senior Couples, the LF Garden Club and the LF Men’s Golf Association, the Yacht Club has brand new chair pads for the chairs in the banquet area. The pads are wonderful a n d e v e r y b o d y appreciates the efforts of these groups and Mrs. Kauffman.
You don’t have to be a golf member to play the golf course. The fee to play golf has been lowered for homeowners. If you play golf there isn’t a better course or a better deal. Come out with family and friends and enjoy the best golf course in the area for a member’s only price. The course is truly in magnificent shape.
As a reminder, summer is a time when work is done on homes and the property.
Please remember to check with the Lake Forest Architectural Committee before you do any work. We do allow members to walk on the golf course when the pin flags have been removed. If you see the flags in, do not go on the course, for your
own safety. Motorized vehicles without a Lake Forest license are prohibited from the golf course. We have a lot of dogs around here. Please be considerate of your neighbors and clean up behind your pet. Thank you.

The May meeting of the Lake Forest Women’s Club was held on May 19, 2016, at the Lake Forest Yacht Club, with 19 members and one guest attending. The tables were decorated with a Hawaiian vacation theme for our last meeting before our summer vacation by hostesses Dino Salmi, Martha Thomas and Lura Kauffman.
There was no speaker for the meeting. However, there were two items of business to discuss. The first item was the new chair pads for the banquet chairs at the yacht club. A sample chair pad arrived, was shown and tried on the chairs. The full order of chair pads had been approved by Rob Wright. Groups participating in the purchasing of the chair pads are the Lake Forest Women’s Club, the Lake Forest Garden Club, the Senior Golf Association, the Men’s Golf Association and the Property Owners Association. We thank you all for your support!!
The next item for discussion was our new co-chairs for the year to come. Dianne Foster and Gail Dreas Richards volunteered! Congratulations to our new officers! Our treasurers Martha Thomas and Dino Salmi have graciously agreed to serve another year.
With our business concluded, we enjoyed another delicious lunch and fellowship. We hope you will join us when we meet again in September 2016! All members are invited and new members & guests are always welcome!

July is here and some people call this time the start of “Dog days of Summer”. I don’t think even dogs want these temperatures. Here’s a tip to enjoy these hot days. Perhaps you could go to the beach, the pool, or out on a boat. My personal favorite happens to be, riding down a beautiful fairway in a golf cart. If you love golf like I do, prepare for the round and the heat won’t be a problem. First off, I recommend riding and not walking
in this heat. Get an ice chest from the 19th Hole Grill and fill it with plenty of water, powerade and some type of energy snack. Adult beverages are ok but sparingly in this heat. Also, take a towel for your clubs and one just for you to wipe off perspiration. And don’t forget to dress for the heat – that’s very important. Do these few things and you’ll have a great time and maybe lower that score.
Don’t forget, we will have our Annual 4th of July Scramble on Monday the 4th. Call the Golf Shop for details and registration.

Even though the home of Ron and Ev Simon of 138 Broadmoor Dr. was featured in 2010 it merit's a return visit. Their stylish English Tutor home sits on a large fan shaped lot that boarders the 15th green. This makes for a perfect panoramic view from their large Portico which is the focal point of their garden. Newly re-designed flower beds and a beautiful lawn of Empire zoysia proves that Ron and Ev's hard work is always evolving.

What You Should Know About WillsBy: Drew Wenzel, Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC
A last will and testament is a document that outlines the manner in which real and personal property is to be distribut-ed upon death. While many people put off the making of a will or consider themselves too young to do so, it is imperative to create a will to avoid uncertainty of property distribution and unnecessary expenses.
In the absence of a will, property is distributed by a person appointed by the Probate Court, an administrator, in accordance with a formula set by law. Th is formula does not con-sider your sentiments, wishes, or desires regarding the distribution of your assets. According-ly, intestate distributions are likely to cause emotional distress among your family members and could lead to additional expenses that are unavoidable such as bonds, administrator fees, and legal fees. Subject to some restrictions, a will provides you with the fl exibility to dispose of your property aft er your death as you see fi t. Additionally, in place of a court appointing an administrator, you may designate the person to serve as personal representative whom you consider competent to manage your estate and trust to follow your wishes. If you have minor children, a will may provide instructions as to their guardianship in the event of your death. In the absence of a will appointing a guardian, the State decides which person will have custody of your minor children. Obviously, knowing ahead of time how guardianship will be handled provides peace of mind to all persons involved. In the absence of a will, there may be many uncertainties about how the assets of an estate will be passed on upon your death. Th is situation is one hundred percent avoidable. Having a properly draft ed last will and testament will provide clarity with respect to your desires for the passing of your property aft er you have passed away. Drew Wenzel is a partner at Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC and practices primarily in the areas of estate planning and elder law. He was born and raised in Foley, Alabama, and at-tended the United States Military Academy at West Point. Upon graduation, Drew was com-missioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He served for over seven years as an aviation offi cer and cargo helicopter pilot including two combat tours in Iraq. Caldwell Wenzel & Asthana, PC has offi ces in Daphne and Foley, Alabama and can be reached at (251) 656-7845 (Daphne) and (251) 948-2168 (Foley).
