What is Lent?

4 Different

Ways to

Practice

Pause for a moment and look outside. What do you see? What makes you smile? Whatever you just

described, think about this: what you saw was always there—it was just waiting for you to pause and notice it.

That’s the basic purpose of Lent: to create space in the middle of life’s responsibilities to appreciate what’s

always been there: God’s presence.

“...You are worried and troubled over so many things, but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing,

and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42

...What IS Lent?

Lent is a 40-day period of stillness, focus, and repentance leading up to the Resurrection Sunday. Based on

Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, Lent is an important tool that can help you stay attuned to God’s voice as

you reflect on His sacrificial love.

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

Psalm 46:10

While Lent does include personal sacrifice, the goal of this time isn’t to “better” your life, but to center your life

on what matters most: the One who made you and died for you.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us

peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

However you choose to practice Lent, we hope you’ll spend the next 40 days creating space in your soul to

reflect on Jesus’ sacrificial suffering and the power of His resurrection.

Together, let’s make space for what matters.

Here are 4 great ways to practice Lent:

1. Memorize a verse a day

Our outlook on life changes when we get God’s Word inside of us. If you’ve always wanted to memorize

Scripture but were never sure where to start, commit to memorizing a verse a day for 40 days!

If you start today, you’ll know 40 passages by Resurrection Sunday, and you’ll be well on your way to

establishing a lifelong habit.

2. Create a Prayer List

Prayer is simply an honest conversation between you and God. And, it’s a great discipline to begin during

Lent. Becoming a person who prays confidently may take some practice, but you can get started by

committing at least 10 minutes a day to prayer.

3. Start a Lent Devotional

One of the best ways to draw closer to God is by spending time in His Word. If you’re not sure where to start,

pick a Lent reading plan and read it every day, for all 40 days of Lent.

4. Practice Generosity

God modeled what generosity looks like when He sacrificed His greatest treasure for us. During the next 40

days, draw near to God through irrational generosity.

There are lots of meaningful ways you can give financially to what God is doing throughout the world. Take a

moment and ask God to show you how you can bless those around you.

The youth

groups

just

finished

another

great

month.

We went bowling again the last week in

February and our bowlers are honing their

skills. They seem to enjoy this activity, so we

will keep this as one of our regular

activities.

I would like to thank all of you who

supported our youth pancake supper. We

had a nice turn out and the added funds

will enable us to continue providing

materials for our study nights and funds for

our fun nights.

In March, we will meet the 2nd and 3rd Sundays from 5:30 until 6:30 at the church. All youth from grades 3rd

through 12th are invited, even if they attend another church for worship. Our March fun time will be the last

Sunday of the month. More details on that to follow. If you have any questions regarding the youth groups,

you may contact Karen Jenkins, Arlene Bassford, or Mary Beth Newns.

Greetings from the United Methodist Men!

In honor of the women of the church, the men celebrated Valentines Day by having the

youth hand out individual carnations to the women as they entered the church for Sunday

Service. This was just a token of the love and appreciation we all have for the many things

and blessings the women provide to Pilmoor’s many ministries including our after-church socials, children’s

church, Pre-School, music ministry, and many many other vital ministries contributing much to our growing

congregation.

As a reminder the men meet every second Sunday of the month from 7:30-8:30am in the social hall where we

meet for a fully prepared breakfast followed by planning and arranging for the various activities and ministries

we support during the year.

Keep in mind - you don’t have to be a member of the church to attend our monthly meetings so feel free to

come on down where we enjoy a soul stirring devotional and discussions on yearly church business and fund-

raising events.

In closing - know that our men’s group is growing and we encourage all the men of the church to come and

join us where we share our blessings, burdens, concerns, and love of Christ with each other.

If you have any questions you can contact the UMM President - Bill Gilliam at 252-267-7209 or email at

[email protected].

Leola Hall Circle

The Leola Hall Circle will be completing our projects for the dedication of hymnals and purchasing new at-

tendance booklets for the Sanctuary.

Coming up in March on 3/25/2020, we will be co-hosting the Cake Auction with the Hilda Brumsey Circle. We

will be combining forces to prepare a ham dinner with all the side dishes being prepared by our ladies. This will

be a free dinner, but donations will be appreciated. We will begin the Cake Auction right around 6:30, once

most people are through eating. There will be sign up sheets in the Sunday Bulletins for two Sundays, March

14th and March 21st. If you miss these, you can call the Church Office by 12:00 on Monday the 23rd to be

added to the list.

Ray Sawyer will be our Auctioneer again this year, it will be nice to see Ray and Michelle again!

There will be sign up sheets for everyone that wants to prepare a cake for the Auction in the Narthex and in

the Social Hall. You don’t have to specify what kind of cake on the sign up as many of us don’t decide what

to make until the last minute, we just need to get an idea of how many will be making cakes.

We will do a Silent Auction again this year, so if you don’t want to make a cake, you can make smaller treats

like cupcakes, small loaves of bread, cookies, etc. for the Silent Auction.

All proceeds from the dinner and the Auction will go to the Pilmoor Building Fund.

Please come join us for an evening of fun and fellowship. It’s Wonderfully Delicious!

The Leola Hall Circle meets the third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 AM in the Church Library. Feel free to

come check us out, we would love to have you. You do not need to be a member of the Church to attend.

If you love to knit or crochet, or would like to learn, join the ladies of the Knit Wits! Their next meeting will

be on Saturday, March 21st at 10:00am in the church library.

If you are interested in making fun and unique greeting cards, join the ladies of the

Greeting Card Ministry! Their next meeting is Thursday, March 12th at 9:30 AM

at Donna McCormick’s.

Thank you for the outpouring of support for the needed school supplies! We

filled a bin and then some. If you have any other school supplies see either Emi-

ly Forehand or Melodie Janovetz.

Children’s Sunday School is off to a great start. We’ll be learning about Lent

and the importance of preparing ourselves for the celebration of Easter. Class starts at 9am. There is no age

restriction.

We tried something new. Children stayed in Church during the communion service. Thank you for the feed-

back! We don’t believe it was beneficial so we’re going back to the regular schedule. During Children’s

Church, the lesson plan will revolve around what communion means. Then they will return to the sanctuary to

join their families to take communion.

Mark your calendar for:

March 15th at 11:30 AM - Next Committee meeting

April 4th - Easter Egg Hunt

May 9th - Mother’s Tea

Spring is on the way!! This month, we will begin to learn about the Easter Story,

Nursery Rhymes, spring, and all the new signs of life that come with this beautiful

season.

God has blessed us once again with a great start to our 2020/2021 school year

registration. If you or someone you know is still in need of a Christian preschool

program, please have them contact the office at 252-232-2136.

As always, thank you PUMC Congregation for your continued love and support.

Blessings,

Jessica Hill

Richard (Dick) Horn was a member of Pilmoor. He died on February 9, 2020. He was

preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brumsey Horn. He is survived by his son, Mike

and his daughter, Suzanne.

Dick taught adult Sunday school for many years, served on many committees, and

supported the church in many endeavors. His greatest commitment was to Pilmoor

Food Pantry as the director for twenty three years. He bought, transported, and

kept the Food Pantry shelves full, and he also gave out the food. Not only did he

meet people at the church to give them the food but he also delivered food to

many families that had no means of transportation. Dick started helping people

with electricity cut-offs, water cut-offs and home eviction notices. Dick kept precise

financial records and because of this and his recognized dedication to serving the

people of Currituck County, Pilmoor Food Pantry received and continues to re-

ceive grants from Albemarle Area United Way and FEMA, and generous donations

from individuals, clubs, and organizations throughout Currituck County.

Dick Horn leaves behind a legacy of humility and service.

Boy Scouts - Troop 182

The weekend after Scout Sunday, 6 scouts laced up their boots and set out to complete the final

20 miles for the Hiking MB. Eleven months ago we started training to go to Gettysburg. We had no

idea at that time that 6 scouts would earn their MB.

We are proud of these guys. They rallied around one scout that wanted his Hiking MB and the rest made sure

he got it. This MB is one that won’t count toward their Eagle required for 5 of them because they already

have swimming. That just shows the spirit of our scouts. They are the kindest group of young men I know in

scouting. I’m slightly biased but it’s true.

The remainder of the troop stayed at base camp, worked on the patrol method and completed many re-

quirements for ranks Scout to 1st Class.

There will be a BBQ fundraiser in March to support our trip to Georgia for summer camp. More information to

come soon.

Unfortunately our February meeting was cancelled due to bad weather. Our future

plans include making and selling chocolate Easter Eggs again. Order forms will be

included in the Sunday bulletins for the next few Sundays. Flavors include Peanut

Butter, Vanilla, Cherry and Coconut. Cost is $5 each and money is due on pick up

April 5, 2020 after church service. If you think that you might be able to sell some at

work please let Karen Jenkins know. She will be able to give you order blanks or

some Eggs to take with you to work. Your help will be appreciated.

On Wednesday, March 25th, Hilda Brumsey and Leola Hall Circles will be holding a joint WEF, accompanied

with our annual Cake Auction. This event is always fun and your chance to bid on yummy and beautiful

cakes. Please plan to attend.

Our next meeting is scheduled for March 19th. Hope to see you there.
