Volume 28 No. 3 The Ties That Bind June 2012 – August 2012
“Good guys wear white hats” is a well-established phenomenon in old western movies. At a recent informal work session of the Alabama Division Executive Committee, the “good guys” (also known as the Alabama Division UDC Officers) could indeed be seen wearing white hats. Pictured left to right sitting: Corresponding Secretary Martha Young, Vice President Leslie Kirk, President Lynda Lowery and Second Vice President Donna Clark. Left to right standing: Registrar Glendora James, Historian Faye Gaston, Third Vice President Cyndi Himes, Assistant Registrar Pat Killian, Military Service Recorder Carolyn Skinner, Treasurer Carolyn Parrish and Parliamentarian Linda Watson. Not pictured are Chaplain Barbara Jenkins and Recording Secretary Marilyn Cash. And what were these Division Officers doing at their work session? Working for the betterment of the Alabama Division, of course! Much Confederate-related work has been accomplished and many goals to honor Confederate ancestors have been reached during 2010-2012 in Alabama UDC. Don’t miss the annual Division Convention to be held September 13-15 at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in Mobile where many of the accomplishments of this term will be celebrated in addition to taking care of the Division’s business. Celebrations will involve hearing good reports and sharing success stories from Division officers, outgoing Chapter Presidents, District Directors, and Division Committee Chairmen. Pre-registration forms and meal registration forms must be postmarked by the absolute deadline of August 31. We look forward to seeing Alabama UDC members in Mobile in mid-September. Lynda Lowery Alabama Division President 2010-2012

REAL DAUGHTER WAS A
TREASURED MEMBER
A memorial service was conducted by Hettie Harrington, Chaplain of the UDC Cradle of the Confederacy Chapter No. 94 of Montgomery, Alabama to honor the memory of the chapter's Real Daughter of a Confederate veteran, Mrs. Elizabeth (Harrell) Carrigan. She was 105 years old at her death in October 2011. Two sisters also lived to be over 100 years old. At the May 2012 chapter meeting, the Chaplain lit a white candle and led the chapter members in responsive reading of Scripture and prayer. Faye Gaston spoke the tribute to the life of Mrs. Carrigan. Mrs. Carrigan became a member of the Cradle chapter on the war record of her Confederate father, John B. Harrell of Georgia. She was born at home in rural Georgia on March 8, 1906, and delivered by an older sister. When she was 15 years old, her family moved to Montgomery. When she was 19 years old, she married James K. Carrigan. She had one daughter, two-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a "foster mother" to several children. Alabama Governor Fob James declared September 2, 1998 to be "Elizabeth Carrigan Day". A proclamation was read and she was presented 36 roses. In 2002, the Cradle chapter presented her with a "Real Daughter" pin when she was 96 years old.
In March 2006, RoseMary Davis and Mae Manning helped her celebrate her milestone 100th birthday at her party with family and friends. Faye Gaston's article about her was published in the October 2006 "UDC Magazine". When she was 102 years old, there was a feature story about her in the January 16, 2009 "Montgomery Advertiser" newspaper. She remembered riding in the first electric street cars in Montgomery. She liked to watch the Montgomery Rebels minor league team play baseball and visit Oak Park. She was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church for 72 years, serving in a visitation program to young mothers. In 1999, she became a member of Eastern Hills Baptist Church. The chapter paid her annual membership dues. Several chapter members visited her through the years with birthday and Christmas gifts. One gift was a lap robe signed by members of the chapter. Chapter scrapbooks with information about her are preserved in the Alabama Archives and History building in Montgomery. At her graveside funeral in October 2011, the only floral tribute was the wreath of magnolia leaves from the Cradle chapter. Faye Gaston spoke a tribute to her special status of being a daughter of a Confederate veteran. Other chapter members attending were RoseMary Davis, Tommie Gayle, Hettie Harrington, Mae Manning and Rena Underwood. Mrs. Gaston also spoke a tribute to her at the memorial service of the annual meeting of the Jefferson Davis District in Opelika in March 2012.

Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne
Chapter ~ Active in May 2012
Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter
was chartered June 1, 2003 with 30 members
and Lynda Lowery as first Chapter President.
The Chapter’s goal is to add 12 to 20 members
each year and has earned the Division Award for
“Chapter with the Most New Members” every
year since 2003. Also, five times this Chapter
has earned General’s annual Huey Award,
presented to the Chapter gaining the most new
members. With attrition, membership in this
Chapter remains at approximately 160 members
in recent years.
Much success with membership is due to the
work of 2008-2012 Chapter President Pat
Killian, who previously served as Chapter
Registrar. Pat also serves as Alabama Division
Assistant Registrar. She processed 231
supplemental applications during 2010-2011,
resulting in Alabama winning “Division
Registering the Greatest Number of
Supplementals” at the November 2011 General
Convention.
At the Gen. Cleburne Chapter’s May luncheon meeting, President Killian announced certificates for the Chapter’s newest members: Betty Pittman and Joan Lovvorn (pictured above) as well as Kristin Hyatt and Linda Jones. Also at the May meeting, members who attended the Division UDC’s Confederate
Memorial Day Ceremony in Montgomery on April 23 reported. Thanks were expressed to members who went into the schools in Cleburne County and in Oxford to work with the 4th graders during April for Confederate History and Heritage Month. The Chapter’s two newest scholarship recipients, William Stephens and Emily Pennington, were announced. An additional $520.00 was collected for the Division Flag Fund to conserve the 20th Alabama Infantry Flag.
Pictured above are incoming 2012-2014
Chapter officers installed by Martha Young,
Director of the Letitia Ross District and a
member of the Admiral Semmes Chapter 57
of Auburn.
The Chapter’s program in May was presented
by Robert Lindley who spoke about the
Confederate Collection at the Janney Furnace
Museum in Calhoun County.

CofC President Visits Memorial
Chase Landon Joiner, President of Julia
Brown Stewart CofC Chapter #961, recently
visited this Confederate monument at
Demopolis. His CofC Chapter is sponsored by
Charles S. Stewart Chapter #2390 from Foley.
Joiner, the grandson of member Barbara
McCamish, was in Demopolis to play in an All
Star tournament.
The now defunct Marengo Rifle Guards
Chapter #312 dedicated the monument
October 10, 1910. It was built to honor the
soldiers who served, were wounded and died
for the South. The dedication that day was
cause to celebrate with a large Bar-B-Que.
General William H. Forney Chapter 468
Anniston, AL. organized May 1, 1901
Spring of 2012 was a busy but enjoyable season
for the Anniston UDC members. Chapter members
joined a road trip to Atlanta Georgia with our
sister chapter Gadsden-Etowah 1620. The
morning was spent at the Atlanta Cyclorama &
civil war [War Between The States] museum,
followed by lunch at the Six Feet Under restaurant.
That afternoon a group of Atlanta UDC members
met and joined with the Alabama ladies on a
guided walking tour of Historic Oakland Cemetery.
A very enjoyable and educational day spent in
Georgia.
This year’s annual Confederate Memorial Day
services held at Edgemont cemetery in Anniston
was hosted by Gen. William H. Forney and Gen.
John H. Forney UDC chapters, “Tige” Anderson,
Alexandria Rifles and Pelham SCV camps.
Following the memorial service at the grave site of
General Tige Anderson, ‘Taps’ was played by a
bag-piper.
UDC member Joyce La Taste ordered and had
installed two Confederate markers for the
unmarked graves of Corp. Henry Augustus Napier,
who served in Co. H 1st Regiment Florida Infantry
and Pvt. John Nevil Seale, who served in Co. H. 30th
Regiment Alabama Infantry. They were honored
with a dedication service conducted by President
Helen Johnson, Chaplain Linda Howard and
Recorder Joyce La Taste. A weeping widow
marked each grave site. Great-Great
Granddaughters Hope Tumlin of Atlanta Ga. and
Penny La Taste of Rome Ga. gave a history of each
man, placed a flag and a wreath on the grave,
followed with “Amazing Grace” being played by a
bag-piper.
Everyone re-grouped later at the John Pelham
monument in Anniston for the annual service with
all those attending remembering their CSA
ancestor by calling out their name, unit and
placing a flag at the base of the monument. Later
that afternoon in the Jacksonville City cemetery,
services at the grave site of General William H.
Forney, General John H. Forney and John Pelham
were held with flags and wreaths being placed.
For the first time in recent times every
Confederate soldier’s grave was marked with a
Confederate flag. What a sight.
While on a tour of Italy two chapter members
carried flags with them which were placed on
graves in that country. At the Anniston library a
display of flags, chapter memorabilia and four
local CSA heroes’ photos and histories was created
and placed there by chapter member Sonja
Randle. At the 2012 R.O.T.C Spring Awards
Ceremony at Jacksonville State University, senior
cadet, Amber Johnson was awarded the General
William H. Forney UDC Patriotic award by chapter
president Helen Johnson. Amber is the descendant
of Confederate veteran James Mason Johnson.

The 58th Annual General CofC
Convention
The 58th Annual General CofC Convention took
place in Gettysburg, PA on July 19-21, 2012. Miss
Haileigh Himes, Third Vice President Alabama
Division Children of the Confederacy attended the
convention with her Grandmother and
Grandfather Mr. and Mrs. John (Cyndi) Himes.
Miss Ann King, Ex-President of AL Division UDC
also attended.
Before arriving in Gettysburg, PA we stopped in
Lexington, VA to visit Washington & Lee
University, VMI, Lee Chapel and Museum,
Stonewall Jackson’s home (while teaching at VMI).
We visited Stonewalls grave and left lemons as
well as an apple for Gen. Robert E. Lee’s horse
Traveler.
What a wonderful history in such a close
proximity of each other.
The CofC Convention Chairman, Mr. A.J. Widowski,
Ex-General CofC President did a wonderful job
planning and executing a great convention. The
Ohio Division UDC ladies did a great job in making
everything look perfect. They thought of
everything, this was by far the best convention
ever. We started with registration and received a
red backpack full of many different items that
really came in handy during our stay.
The first thing was our Director’s luncheon with
all Division’s and CWND. Mrs. Janet Johnson, Mrs.
Pam Trammell and Mrs. Alice Williams gave their
reports and concerns about the CofC and its
growth and things we can all do to make things
better for this organization.
We need at least one new CofC chapter per year
and 50 new members to keep up with the age
outs, resigned or dropped members to stay ahead.
Miss Haileigh Himes escorted the Alabama flag in
on President’s evening and gave the Division
report; she even added a song that was enjoyed by
all in attendance. Did I mention she just turned 6 a
few days before convention?
She had fun making new friends and seeing other
friends she had made at previous conventions.
Our tour of Gettysburg was fabulous. The weather
was rainy and cool the whole time but, it sure beat
the hot weather in Alabama any day.
After Historical Evening, President’s Evening, Tour
of Gettysburg, Swimming Party, and Confederate
Ball, we were all a little tired at the end of the
convention. But, before traveling home we
decided to check out some of the battlefields on
our way back; like Antietam, Chancellorsville,
Fredricksburg and the shrine of Jonathan Thomas
“Stonewall” Jackson.
We all learned and enjoyed these wonderful
places that told so much about our Confederate
history.
May God forever bless the South and the CofC!
Mrs. Cyndi M. Himes, Director
Alabama Division CofC
Miss Haileigh Himes and Cindy Himes

June and July 2012 Events in Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter
In June, this Chapter hosted an annual Military Service Ceremony. The Chapter event was held at
the Anniston-Calhoun County Library and included ten individual UDC Military Service Awards.
Two of the ten were World War II Crosses of Military Service for Fred R. Lett and James H. Gilreath,
Jr., but neither WWII veteran was able to attend. Chapter member Alice Gilreath Duckett accepted
on behalf of her father.
Other bestowals included a posthumous Korean Cross of Military Service for John Lewis Watson
and a Vietnam Conflict Cross of Military Service bestowed on Joe Berl Duckett. Two medals were
bestowed on Wayne Bonner: a Vietnam National Defense Service Medal and a Korean
Expeditionary Service Medal. Claude Miller received a Vietnam National Defense Medal, and
Rhonda Morehead received a Persian Gulf War National Defense Medal. A posthumous National
Defense medal was bestowed upon John Herman Spears and accepted by wife who is a member of
the Chapter. Mike Killian accepted a posthumous Meritorious Service Award on behalf of his father,
Victor Killian.
In July, the Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter held a planning meeting at the historic Dodson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Oxford. Built in 1857, the Church’s history includes connections to the Confederate period in Alabama, and the beautiful stained glass windows are original from that time. Carrie Rich, a high school senior, was welcomed in July as the Chapter’s newest member. During 2011-2012, this Chapter added 18 members to its roster. With normal attrition, membership remains at approximately 160 as the largest Chapter in this Division and one of the largest in UDC. In July, another donation was made to the Division Flag Fund which brought to $1,785.00 the amount donated by this Chapter toward conservation of the 20th Alabama Flag. During the previous year, Chapter members donated $2,660.00 to the Division’s project to conserve the 30th Alabama Flag. Chapter plans for 2012-2013 include establishing another Alabama Division Scholarship,
bestowing UDC Military Service Awards upon living World War II veterans, scheduling interesting
speakers and programs for Chapter meetings, and conducting benevolent outreach projects
involving the several communities from which the Chapter’s members are drawn.

Joe Wheeler UDC # 291 Installs New Officers
The grounds of the historic McEntire House on the Tennessee River was the setting for the installation of the
2012-2014 Officers of Joe Wheeler 291 on May 10th, 2012. The McEntire house is an antebellum Greek
Revival mansion which was constructed prior to 1836 and used as headquarters by both Confederate and
Union forces during the war. In 1862, the plans for the Battle of Shiloh were drawn up at the home before the
home was occupied by Union Forces.
Alabama Honorary President Judy Blackwell installed the officers using the traditional Installation of Officers
protocol. After the officers were installed, outgoing President Bettye Moore presented incoming President
Linda Edwards with the Daughters’ Flag and the Chapter President’s pin. Mrs. Moore received her past
President’s pin from Mrs. Edwards.
Ginger Reeves gave the daughter’s a “history lesson” completed with an easel teacher board on General
Robert E. Lee. It was a fun and interesting program as well as educational. President Bettye Moore thanked
her officers with gift bags and thanked the members for all their hard work during her administration.
Delegates and alternates were chosen for the Division Convention in Mobile and the General Convention in
Richmond.
New officers seated l to r: Bettye Moore - Historian, Linda Clemons – Recorders of Military Crosses, Linda

General Edmond Winchester Rucker
Chapter News In the early 1990’s the Gen. Edmond
Winchester Rucker Chapter had a portrait made of Mrs. Alberta Martin. At that time she was recognized as the only known living Confederate widow. One copy of the portrait was presented to the City Library in Elba, AL where she lived. The other copy has been held by the chapter. This year, chapter members decided that the portrait needed to be placed where it would be seen and others could learn about “Miz Alberta.” In July, the newly framed portrait was presented to the Pea River Historical and Genealogical Society for placement in their library.
At the chapter’s August meeting, a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Donna Clark for her tireless efforts in the design and approval of our chapter’s pin. The pin is an oval design featuring one side of the Rucker’s Brigade flag in the center. This flag is the familiar St. Andrews Cross with the wording “Rucker’s Brigade” and “Forrest’s Cavalry.” The pin was manufactured by Pamela Wright. The last item on the agenda for the August meeting was the passing of the gavel to the new chapter president. Outgoing President Shirley Edberg presented Pat Richter with the Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker Chapter 2534 memorial gavel.
Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker Chapter 2534 officers for 2012-2014 are L to R: Pat Richter, President; Holly Muller, Vice President; Donna Clark, 2nd Vice President; Kim Larson, 3rd Vice President; Laura F. Rowell, Recording Secretary; Shirley Edberg, Treasurer; Georgia Fleming, Registrar; Marie Koach, Historian; Irene Carter, Chaplain; and Laura D. Rowell, Recorder of Military Service Awards.
