2018 Sports Dinner Congratulations to Clarity – Start-up Company of the Year at the Regional Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Awards, and to the Sustainability Committee for gaining a Bronze Enviroschools Award. Next week is the Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards; nine EGGS students are finalists (details in this issue of EGGSNEWS), and I am looking forward to this celebration of outstanding sporting talent. Meet the Maker, at Mini Newmarket, was a great event, and we look forward to partnering with Barfoot and Thompson and Mini, our major sponsors for the event, again. For a full list of sponsors see Page 6. We have a wonderful team of volunteers made up of parents, staff and PTA – special thanks to Mark Jones who coordinated this event, and if you would like to be involved in future events please contact the Foundation Office – details on Page 7. Plans for the L Block redevelopment are advancing quickly now. As I mentioned at Senior Prizegiving, we need your help with this project. Please remember the Donor Wall of Honour where an amount of $500.00 or more donated will be recognised in the main entrance of the building. Thank-you to those who responded generously the day after Prizegiving - let’s meet our target in good time to make sure that we can proceed to the specifications the students deserve. You may have seen in the media that Year 11 students across the country, sitting the Level 1 Digital English Examination yesterday, had a ten minute hiatus when NZQA’s digital assessment provider’s server went down. The exam time was extended by ten minutes at the end and students here coped with the disruption with maturity. All affected Epsom students, and their parents, will receive an information email today regarding this. NZQA are obviously working to make sure that his sort of disruption is not repeated in any other digital examinations. Year 9 students are currently working towards their Community Aroha Day at the end of the month and Year 10 are preparing for the Year 10 Careers Day and their Ki o Rahi tournament day. While the NZQA examinations are on it is important that Year 9 and 10 students move around the school quietly, especially when close to D/E Block, and when leaving at the end of the day. The tuckshop continues to operate at interval and lunchtime. Lunchtimes are not a problem, but during interval exams are in session so students need to be mindful of keeping noise to a minimum in the tuckshop area. CURRICULUM NEWSYear 13 Business Enterprise

Suffrage Showcase in the LibraryLibraries, she wrote, are a democratising and liberating force that encourages new thinking and offers

“support to immigrants, students, to anyone with a well-developed curiosity or deep need for community. It is a place for minds to meet minds and hearts to move hearts.”

Margaret Attwood

This term the library had the pleasure of playing host to a Suffrage Showcase, an exhibition of creativity around the theme of ‘What 125 Years of NZ women’s suffrage means to me’. A handful of our brave and talented students took to the library floor giving voice to their unique stories with eloquence and verve.

The Suffrage Showcase was the inspiration of Year 13 Learning Egg prefect Jesslyn Woo. After entering the Kate Edgar Charitable Trust competition with her beautiful song about what NZ women’s suffrage means to her today, Jesslyn asked if she and a few friends could use the library space to showcase more creative expression around this theme.

In September the library had been set up with a number of large interactive ‘Suffrage 125’ displays – the bright idea of our Library Committee leaders, Sylvia Orr and Shonnia Logeswaran. This was a wonderful backdrop for the powerful feminist monologues and deeply thought provoking poetry, song and commentary. Teacher Anna Richardson had also been asked to speak. Anna summarised by referencing the words and mindful actions of Kate Sheppard.

A huge thank-you to the students who felt comfortable enough to share their work and talent. Your combined words and actions so beautifully identified our feminine otherness – harmonising our uniqueness and our differences and highlighting the equalities we are still seeking.

…Breaking news! Jesslyn’s entry went on to win a significant prize in the Kate Edgar Competition! Congratulations Jesslyn.

OLD GIRLS ASSOCIATIONMembers of the OGA Committee are finalising preparations for the 2018 Graduation Dinner. It’s always a wonderful occasion when we celebrate the end of an era for Year 13 students. Our guest speaker is Dr Erica Whineray (EGGS 1986-1989) Founders Award recipient in 2017. We look forward to seeing Year 13 girls and their families on Thursday 29th November for a special evening to remember.

FOUNDATION NEWSMeet the Maker Meet the Maker took place last Friday in the Mini Garage Newmarket and was a hugely successful L Block fundraiser for the adult EGGS community. It was a fantastic event with an electric atmosphere where our guests enjoyed New Zealand’s beer brewing excellence, boutique fine wines and hearty food. The evening provided the perfect stage to meet the makers, to come together and appreciate the entertainment on offer including a giant live auction with Murray Smith welcoming bids from all corners of the room.

Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts to advance learning at EGGS. We are very proud to have brought together such an amazing group of supporters, sponsors and contributors – we value and acknowledge your generosity.

The final figure for the amount raised is to be confirmed shortly, but we envisage it will be well over $35,000. A huge achievement overall!

Thank you again for being part of such a wonderful experience.

A special thanks to:

You can create a bequest for the future that supports the causes you care about the most including education, sports, teaching, and the arts and culture, or you can leave a gift that meets the most critical needs of the school over time. With your generosity, we can advance learning at EGGS.
