TheEvolu*ontobecominganAmerica’sCupSailor
The path to becoming a Big-Boat sailor and Match Race skipper will be discussed by Paul Savage. Having sailed for nearly forty-five years as a fledging crew member on a 42 Columbia (Vita) to racing catamarans alongside the C-Cats, the journey to being a skipper on four of the modern 12 Meter, America’s Cup Yachts has been an honor. There is so much to be learned and it is just as important today for women to become involved in sailing and sailboat racing. But it may not be for the faint at heart.
Mr. Savage’s daughter is a renowned sailor and owner of Atlantic Yacht Rigging in the Newport area as well as sailing among international competitors, including Dawn Riley of America’s Cup fame. We will explore the evolution and commitment to a lifelong ‘hobby’ and the concerns for safety and enjoyment. Come sail with us on the 12 Meter’s and specifically America II.
Paul Savage spent the majority of his sailing experience on competitive sailing vessels among the 42 to 67 foot range as well as having lived aboard a Paasch motor yacht. He has sailed the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean and Virgin Island, to the offshore islands of Maine and Bermuda. Having raced in every corner of Long Island Sound, Newport, New Jersey and elsewhere; the trials and tribulations have provided him with a calmness that is recognized by all that he has sailed with. While Paul has spent his career in the Medical and Hospital Management field, he is now a Professor at three Universities and the Healthcare Management Program Director at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, recognizing his teaching and presentation capabilities.
SUS TWILIGHT SAILS
Twilight sails offer a opportunity for members to sail during the week, after work, from 6pm to around 9pm. (Twilight, yes?) These sails provide a wonderful way to unwind after a hard day, meet new members, get some “lay back” instruction and well, enjoy a beautiful sunset.
TWILIGHT PROCESSThe twilight sail schedule including boats, skippers and dates may change without notice at the discretion of the skipper. All sails are “weather permitting.”
Be sure to bring sailing gloves, proper deck shoes, foul weather gear etc.
HOW TO SIGN UPContact the skipper! Don’t be shy! The twilight sail schedule indicates how the skipper would like to be contacted- by email or phone. Advance notice of, say, 24 hours is suggested.Members may also enter their request on the member area website or email at [email protected]. or 914-522-9645. Sailing Events Director, Janet, will be able to assist.
SOME GUIDELINESKeep in mind that you are the guest of the skipper. The skipper has full authority to accept or decline guest(s) on his or her boat. Try to get to the boat on time. The general meeting time is 18.00 hours (6PM). Boats normally leave the dock before 18.30 hours (6:30PM). If you are stranded in traffic, call the skipper (assuming you have a cell phone).Participation is a first sign-up, first served basis. Although we will try to accommodate everyone, capacity on boats is limited, and we don’t overload boats…We cannot guarantee participation with sign-up. Once back at the dock, we usually have a short sundowner happy hour. Bring something to share and your own beverage. And don’t overstay…for most folks, there is work tomorrow.Enjoy your twilight sail.
SUS SAILING EVENTS Are you available to crew on upcoming sailaways? It’s as easy as 123.
Contact Sailing Events (Janet Steinberg)by email at [email protected] or phone 914-522-9645 call or txt.
Remember, twilight sails and Daysails and attending membership meetings are the best way to meet skippers and other members making for happy and compatible crew
choices.

FROM GARDEN GALLEY BY JANET STEINBERG
Some of the best times on the water come when the anchor is set or we are back at the dock for sundowners and happy hour. BRING A LITTLE SOMETHING….chips and a dip, or maybe something more?…Over the seasons some skippers and crew have become known for their culinary skills, adept at whipping up delectable snacks and dishes in small spaces! For the rest of us who may have brain freeze when given a kitchen assignment here are some suggestions and favorite recipes from our talented crew. This month’s GO TO recipe comes from Ronnie Ross, self confessed foodie, who grows most of her ingredients in her garden. Her passion for all things culinary make her “little somethings” very special! Lets share some of our favorite dishes. If you have a favorite recipe to share, send it to Janet at [email protected]. Well fed crew is happy crew!
EASY BAGUETTE RECIPES (RONNIE ROSS)
BUY A BAGUETTE, slice diagonally into 1/4-1/2 inch slices: the (choose one) slice and put into plastic bag to bring to boat. Or brush with olive oil on one side and bake at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes until golden…bring to boat. When ready to serve, spread top of each slice with:1. goat cheese, fig jam, chopped walnuts2. premade olive tampenade and 1/2 cherry tomato (Trader Joes make a great olive tapenade)3. mixture of 3 oz. gorgonzola, 3 T chop arugula, 6 T chopped nuts4. slice of peach, melon or some prosciutto5. chicken salad and a bit of bacon
ENJOY!
