implications of the gospel,
so after graduating I moved
into a Christian community
that had three large old
homes where those
struggling with
homelessness came to live
alongside the staff. It
wasn’t an easy place to live.
I struggled to be vulnerable
to it. Not only did it show
me my sin, but I also
struggled to have hope for
those who came to live with
us. Which is really another
way of saying that I wasn’t
sure that God actually cared
for them (or me).
Each month our
extended community—the
staff, guests, volunteers,
donors—all gathered for a
Communion service at the
community’s drop-in center.
That Advent I was
reflecting on how seemingly
hopeless Mary’s situation
also seemed and yet she
bore the hope of the world.
Coming forward for
communion with the
community, I looked around
the room and realized that it
was no different for this
community that God had
gathered. Like Mary, our
situation should have been
hopeless. Yet God was
working among us. He was
reconciling us to Himself
and each other. Somewhere
in the midst of the cooking
and dishes, the late night
(Continued on page 2)
Growing up a pastor’s-
kid-missionary-kid, I was
immersed in the Christian
faith right from the
beginning. Sometimes
looking back it seems like
my fate was sealed. I heard
Bible stories in utero,
prayed the sinner’s prayer
when I was two, and was in
church anytime the doors
were open. Watching my
parents orient their whole
lives around God’s call
impressed on me from an
early age how completely
Christ claims our lives.
It is two different
things though to realize that
my life is God’s and to trust
Him with it. I first
remember wrestling to trust
Him when we finally
returned to Indiana in the
middle of high school. One
evening on the way to visit
a new church, I found
myself really missing my
friends in Indonesia and not
wanting to do the work of
making new friends. I was
blankly staring out the
window as I lifted my
complaint to God. Then I
realized that there was a
beautiful orange sunset
outside and that the Chinese
calligraphy sign for strength
literally was written in the
sky with what looked like
jet streams. I know, it
sounds a little hokey, but it
was there, and in that
moment I felt God
encouraging me to trust
Him to get me through the
transition. Looking back, I
mark this transition as
where I first began to trust
God’s love.
But two years into my
time at Notre Dame, I was
struggling. Not only was I
going through the growing
pains of leaving my
evangelical bubble and
learning about the church
catholic but I had also been
shaken by two classes—
Christianity and World
Religions and Introduction
to Philosophy—that made
me doubt grounding my
faith in either reason or
experience. My questions
felt paralyzing. Thankfully,
a mentor modeled for me
both humble intellectual
rigor and a firm belief that
God could be trusted. And
probably best of all, with an
infuriating chuckle he
would occasionally remind
me that I was not the first to
wrestle with my questions
and then change the subject.
Eventually I came to the
realization that despite my
questions, I could not deny
God’s persistent presence in
my life. I stumbled onto
both St. John of the Cross,
Thomas Merton, and Annie
Dillard and they became
fast friends as I continued to
learn how to patiently look
to God for my sustenance.
At Notre Dame I got a
whiff of the social

the walls that divided us and
teaching us to love Him and
each other. While we still had
so far to go, by His completely
unmerited grace, God had

God’s sheer grace Christ’s life

Somewhere amid these

Thursday Morning Prayer Faculty
Preaching Series on Exodus
This Winter term the faculty will be preaching on portions of
the Book of Exodus. It will be a form of liturgical
preaching. Portions of the book were selected to reflect the
two seasons of the church year we will be in this academic
term, Epiphany and Lent. Thus, during the season of
Epiphany faculty will preach on portions of Exodus having
to do with ways God was manifest to Israel. During Lent
faculty will preach on portions of the book which follow
Israel in the wilderness. Audio-recordings of the sermons
will be posted on the Wycliffe website.
See you in Chapel,

Parking is very limited at
Wycliffe, making it advisable
for students and visitors to
use public transit when
traveling to and from the
College.
To best serve the entire
Wycliffe community, a strict
parking system has been put
in place: parking permits are
only available to students
living outside the GTA
(Greater Toronto Area). If
you wish to apply for a
parking permit, please get an
application form from the
Front Desk or speak with
Paul Patterson in office 107.
Please note, even with a
permit you are not
guaranteed a parking space as
parking is available on a “first
come, first served” basis for
those with permits. These
permits are valid while
students are in the College
for classes, or events and are
not valid for overnight
parking. These permits are
only valid for the parking
spaces by the tennis court.
Any student that parks in a
“reserved” space will have
their parking privileges at the
College revoked and will not
be eligible for a parking
permit in the future.

Mission Week 2016—Jan16-20 @Wycliffe
What is Mission Week?
Mission week is an intensely focused week of outreach and evangelism on a university campus, a mission trip on home soil. Multiple talks with Q&As happen on a daily basis that deal with barriers to belief and also are effective at sparking curiosity. Creative evangelism strategies provide opportunity to engage students in conversation.
Experienced evangelists/apologists come to the campus to model a passion for the gospel, inspiring and mobilizing Christian students to reach out with expectation that God will powerfully change lives. Discussions often continue late into the night. Non-Christian students come to Christ as they hear the gospel presented in multiple ways throughout the week, have their questions answered, and experience loving community.
By partnering together with multiple Christian ministries, campus groups, and churches we are able to have a greater impact than we could alone.
Last year
Over 1300 people attended 15 talks
A number of people made decisions to follow Christ
9 Christian groups partnered together
Over 100 volunteers and 6000 flyers
Hundreds engaged through 10 evangelism engagement activities
Countless hours of one on one spiritual conversation
This Year’s Mission
Similar to last year, this January 16-20th, various campus ministries at the University of Toronto (including Wycliffe College) will be coming together to set aside one week to intentionally making Christ known on campus.
The week will feature over 20 evangelistic talks and dialogues, each presenting the gospel in a way that speaks to both the mind and the heart, and oriented around tough questions and barriers many people have about God and faith (www.relevantseries.com).
Christian students will be scattered across campus, inviting friends and fellow students to the events, through topic-specific flyers, video interviews, engagement stations, surveys, and other outreach activities.
Pray
Please keep us in your prayers for it is “God who causes the growth” (1 Cor 3:7; cf. John 15:15).

Commuter Dorms: If you are a student who lives outside the GTA and would be interested in staying over-night at Wycliffe, we have limited accommodations for commuting students. Rooms are $40 per night ($30 per night if you bring your own bath towel and sheets), and if you need an overnight parking space it is an additional $10. Rooms include a complimentary breakfast during the 7:45-8:30am breakfast hour, and brunch on Saturdays. These are shared living spaces, so there is a potential that other students will be staying in the same room as you. We have two single guest rooms (one on our men’s floor and one on our women’s floor), as well as two commuting dorm rooms (one for women, and one for men).

Upcoming Wednesday Event with Katheryn Greene-
McCreight
The Rev. Dr Kathryn Greene-McCreight will join us via a “distance” conversation on Wednesday February 15, 2017. While we are confirming the exact topic—she has so many to choose from! - Kathryn suggests students read her updated
“Darkness is my Only Companion”.
Rev. Kathryn has an extensive background as a theologian, teacher, and author, who wrote the 2016 Lenten study commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. She has a M.Div. from Berkeley Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Theology from Yale Divinity School. As an Episcopal priest, she has served in a variety of parishes in the New Haven
area.
Next Wednesday at Wycliffe
On Wednesday January 18th, Archbishop Colin Johnson will visit Wycliffe accompanied by the three new Suffragan Bishops in the Diocese of Toronto. Please join them in the Principal’s Lodge
at 3:00 p.m.
This will be an opportunity to meet the Bishop Jenny Andison, Bishop Kevin Robertson, and Bishop Riscylla Shaw at the start of their new
ministry.
Archbishop Johnson will preach at Holy Eucharist
following the Wednesday Event.
You may be interested to note that both Bishop
Jenny and Bishop Riscylla are Wycliffe Graduates!
Notes from the Front Desk
Welcome back, students! We have a few little announcements from the
Front Desk.
First, our lockers in the basement will be available for the Winter term for
$10. A great deal!
Another great deal is our Wycliffe lunches, available for Wycliffe
students, residents, faculty/staff, and friends (not the general
public). The cost for one lunch is $4.00, but if you buy a pack of 5
or 10 lunches it is $3.00 per lunch. It’s also a great meet-and-greet
time!
Please talk to Andy or our friendly Front Desk Staff about either lockers or meal tickets.
