Reflection for weekend 9th & 10th March
12. For the next few weeks, we will examine the Creed. We recite the Creed during every mass, after the gospel and
homily. This Creed, also called the ‘Apostles’ Creed’ may have
originated in the 5th century in Gaul. The early Christians’ inten-
tion was to sum up the most important facts of their faith in 12
key points. Fact 1: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Crea-
tor of heaven and earth. God is God: He is everywhere,
above and below, today and tomorrow, without beginning or
end. God was here when not even a grain of dust existed. And
He will still be here when the world no longer exists. God is the
one that all good in the world comes from; God is love. (1Jn
4:8). God has power over everything. All creation exists
because God wanted it and he sustains all things: time and
space, heaven and earth, the universe and the stars, angels,
man and animals. God has wonderfully ordered everything so
that man can live on earth. A famous Jewish philosopher Martin
Buber (1878-1965) reflects on the word “God”: “Yes, it is the
most heavy-laden of all human words. None has become so
soiled, so mutilated. Just for this reason I may not abandon it.
The generations have laid the burden of their anxious lives
upon this word and weighed it to the ground... Where might I
find a word like it to describe the Most High! We cannot cleanse
the word ‘God’ and we cannot make it whole; but, defiled and
mutilated as it is, we can raise it from the ground, and set it up
over an hour of great sorrow.” Lord teach us how to revere Your
Holy Name in true holiness.
