GLOBAL CONNECTIONS HOW WE TEACH AND LEARNHave you ever considered what education is like in other parts of the world? What would a classroom full of students look like in Kenya, Finland, India, Brazil or Indonesia? What style of teaching and learning occurs in these classrooms? What is considered to be successful in teaching and learning practices?

The crux of considering these questions is how can we learn from each other in our teaching and learning practices? By going beyond our borders, we can consider globally what is happening in schools.

To encourage our school community to think and act globally, last year ‘Serving Indonesia with a Heart’ (SIWAH) was founded. The vision for SIWAH, was to form a partnership between SMA HKBP 1 Tarutung and Faith Lutheran College, where each school community could serve the other and make a difference in the lives of our students.

In July 2018 the inaugural Faith visit saw six Year 11 Faith students, two staff and two parents visit Indonesia and the reciprocal partnership was successfully formed. During Week 6 the Faith Community were absolutely thrilled to return the hospitality by welcoming six guests from SMA HKBP 1 Tarutung in Indonesia including Mr. Tumbur (Principal), Ms. Anna (Chemistry teacher), Ms. Niki (English teacher), and 3 students, Ika, Warti, and Kurnia.

During their time at the College, our guests immersed themselves in many classes, observing, taking notes and videoing Faith’s teaching and learning practices. They were particularly impressed by the diversity of subjects offered and our Wine program.

When asked what they (the Indonesian staff) could take back to Indonesia and use in their teaching practices, Ms. Anna replied, ‘I want to ask more questions of my students, rather than just tell them information. I want them to think about their learning more.’ SIWAH holds a special place in the heart of Principal Steve Wilksch who mentions ‘everything we want to achieve in relation to the mission can be accomplished through this relationship.’

‘As the College unpacks the Philosophy set by the International Baccalaureate®, SIWAH encourages our students to become internationally minded, understanding the world through the eyes of other people. SIWAH also gives real-life learning opportunities, encouraging students to celebrate and appreciate their similarities and differences in a global context. Through these relationships we have an opportunity to serve and learn from each other.’

STUDENT COMMENTSThe Faith community prides itself on close staff and student relationships and by popular opinion, this is how a lot of our students benefit from their learning. I think one of the most powerful elements of their (The Indonesian Staff and students) reciprocated trip to Australia was, that they were able to witness the sense of friendship in our Faith community. Through witnessing the ‘learning partnership’ through effective working relationships, the Indonesian staff now want to replicate this in their school environment. Hopefully, by increasing teacher/student interaction and partnering in learning, their community will produce better academic results and also develop their Lutheran culture, something both schools share.’ Anneka Wilksch

The impact on having the very people who welcomed us into their school and some, their own homes, come and be able to have the same treatment reciprocated on them whilst being in Australia was so valuable for our partnership. A memorable experience from the week was having a photo night, in which we looked at the photos we took whilst being in Indonesia. As a group, we were able to bond over memories, bringing back emotions like happiness, tiredness as well as a deep missing for the trip and the friends we made over there. Amy DoeckeFinally having our Indonesian friends visit us, in our country, our school and our wider community were very valuable. As we observed their customs and practices, they observed ours. I particularly appreciated their visits to various classes to observe various subjects at work, seeing the scenery of the Barossa and our wildlife and spending time reflecting with them about the differences and similarities between Indonesia and Australia and SMA HKBP 1 Tarutung and Faith Lutheran College, and what we have and can continue to learn from each other Sarah Herrmann

5 STAR REVIEW FOR CAFÉ 7It was with great anticipation Café 7 opened its doors for the first time on Monday 25th of March.

Set within the heart of Faith Lutheran College, Café 7 is the brainchild of 16 enthusiastic Year 7 students who identified modern dining trends in their elective to establish a ‘pop up’ café.

Research, planning and collaboration guided the process, with customers heralding the opening of the café as a great success.

“This is amazing, I wish Café 7 was open every Monday morning!”, satisfied customer and food enthusiast, Ms. Ruwoldt exclaimed.

Mrs. Parbs felt privileged to receive a short ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the newly opened café. She was extremely impressed with the level of teamwork and planning evident in each of the kitchen stations. “Menu items were well presented and efficiently prepared. The level of support from senior mentors was a pleasure to observe,” she said.

“The atmosphere was fantastic” Mrs Parbs also reported. “I could see so much care and thought was behind the opening of the Café. The management had really considered the needs of customers and created a warm and welcoming meeting place. The greenery, decorations and variety of menu options were executed very professionally... and the food was simply delicious! I can’t wait to visit again!”

From all reports, the opening of Café 7 was an incredible success.

Dominique Sleep I have been playing football since 2017 and I am currently playing in the Crows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Academy [ATSI], I've also represented Central Districts in the SANFL for the past two years. I am a descendant of the Wirangu people from the West Coast of South Australia. I was privileged enough to play my first AFLW game on the 10th of March and, although we lost by 8 points, it was as amazing game and I am so proud to have been a part of the Crows history. The Guernseys we wore on the day were actually designed by the players using various Indigenous symbols and illustrates our journey to the Crows. I would love to see more girls playing footy in the future because it has given myself and others so many amazing opportunities. Declan Malone and Simeon SolomouOur competition is in early April taking place in Sydney. It is the under 19’s junior Gridiron Nationals. Playing for South Australia we will be facing NSW, WA, VIC, QLD and the “all stars” (other states combined). We have now been training with our team for over 3 months. To get selected is just like any other sport team we had to go to early trainings and the coaches had to decide whether we were good enough for a position in the squad and then in the starting team. Simeons positions are Defensive End and Guard/ O Line. My positions are Tackle, Guard, Defensive Line and Linebacker. Declan Malone

Trish Cirillo, Pathways CoordinatorOn Tuesday 19 March, we hosted the Year 10 Parents as Career Partners Evening. The night commenced by exploring how parents can enjoy becoming a travel partner on their child’s pathway journey. As Year 10 families, it was a great opportunity to unravel SACE and its requirements over Year 11 and 12 and that at Faith we commence SACE in Year 10 with the career focused subject, Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Families then welcomed the information from the Year 10 Wellbeing Leader and Work Experience Coordinator and VET Coordinator about work experience and our extensive VET courses on offer both on and off Faith campus.I concluded the evening with a detailed analysis of the Vocational Interest Questionnaire (VIQ) and how families interpret the Year 10s Interest Profiles and occupations associated with those interests. This led to the workshop where families commenced the Action Plan as a team and worked on exploring pathways and various websites to assist in this process. Families found this everning both valuable and informative and was well attended. Completion of the VIQ Action Plan is important and needed when each Year 10 meets with me this semester to discuss their results, possible pathways and related courses and subjects. The Action Plan is also required for the subject PLP in Semester 2 as it formulates the basis of their first assessment task. If you have any questions or would like to discuss the information presented that evening, please feel free to email [email protected] or call 8561 4200.

Did you know the UMAT has now changed to the UCAT?At the end of 2018, the UMAT Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test changed to UCAT, the University Clinical Aptitude Test. The UCAT is now a 2-hour computer based test and offered over a series of dates over the month of July rather than the one date due to the flexibility of the test and more venues as Pearson will now host the test.

The test consists of five separately timed subtests consisting of Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgement Test.

The UCAT is a well-established and internationally respected test used widely in the UK since 2006. The UCAT assesses a range of abilities identified as important by university medical and dental schools for success in their programmes or courses, and later as a clinician.

Registration opened in March and Year 12 students have been notified of the UCAT dates and their need to sit this test in order to apply for Medicine, Dental Surgery or Oral Health with the University of Adelaide and other various interstate universities.

To register and learn more about the UCAT, please visit: www.ucatofficial.com

FAITH TRIATHLON TEAMNick Schmidt and Janelle Vanderloo

On Wednesday the 20th of February, a team of 30 Year 9 to Year 12 students competed in the 2019 Secondary Schools Sport of South Australia (SSSSA) Triathlon Championships.

Our team departed the College at 7am to arrive for registration and our individual competitors events. Our Individual competitors consisted of Max Roocke (Year 12) who placed first in his ‘Under 20 Come and Try Event’, Henry Ratcliff (Year 10) who competed strongly in his ‘U17 State Event’ and Bradley Butler, who placed first in his ‘U15 State Event’. In the near future, Bradley will travel to Queensland to represent South Australia in the National Triathlon Championships. As a College, we wish him the best of luck.

The individual races were followed by our team events, where we had an impressive number of students competing: 4 x Under 20 teams and 6 x under 17 teams. Each race involved a swim leg, a cycle leg and the run to finish off. Our teams competed admirably and represented our College with pride, demonstrating the true Faith Spirit by giving 100% and encouraging their teammates all the way to the finish line. This, along with our strong attendance rate has seen many students encouraged to compete in individual events next year.

We are very proud of their efforts.

Jade Triplett, Year 7 student This term, we have been inquiring into the Australian federal system of governance and the history behind it during individuals and societies. Prior to the trip to Canberra, we did a mini inquiry task about any of the topics listed by the teacher relating to the Australian Government. We could choose any topic that we were interested in and then we had the next 4 weeks to complete a presentation about that topic. The topics varied from how the Australian Government works today to how it was established in 1901 during federation. After we had completed our presentation, we presented it to the other classes. Then we were set to go to Canberra with the new knowledge that we had gained. On Sunday the 17th at 2:30 pm, all the Year 7s met at the Adelaide Airport ready for our flight to Canberra. We arrived late in the afternoon and then drove to our campsite, Camp Cottermouth. Camp Cottermouth was a lovely campsite with a scout centre for breakfast and dinner and a meeting area in the middle. It was also in a lovely bush area with beautiful wildlife and plants. On Monday we visited The National Electoral Education Centre located at old parliament house, The CSIRO Discovery Centre, The Australian War Memorial and The Embassy Drive which were all very educational and interesting. Tuesday, we visited Government house, The High Court of Australia, The Museum of Democracy and the Royal Australian Mint as well as the Botanical

Gardens. Wednesday, we visited the Canberra Deep Space Communication Centre, The Australian Institute of Sport and The National Museum. And finally, on Thursday we visited Questacon, Parliament House and the Canberra Zoo before returning to the Canberra Airport for our flight home. The days at Canberra were packed full of exciting and very educational experiences and even some days had night excursions. Every day we woke up at 6:30am and went to bed at 9:30pm. One of the highlights of the camp was the delicious foods that Camp Cottermouth provided us with. Every single breakfast and dinner we had amazing meals. We had delicious meat, vegetables, bread, pancakes, potatoes, fruit and more all thanks to their great staff. And the desserts were also very popular as we had either jelly and ice-cream or chocolate mousse with wafers every night.Questacon, The Australian War Memorial, The Royal Australian Mint, The Australian Institute of Sport and The Canberra Zoo were some favourites among all the places that we visited as well as chilling back at the Camp during free time. Canberra camp was such an enjoyable experience for everybody who came along, with all the fun and exciting places that we visited as well as the interesting learning experiences relating to our topic in individuals and societies, Australian Parliament. Everybody had a Great time and it was an amazing trip to Canberra. Thank you to everybody who made this Canberra Trip happen, it was an amazing experience.

Last year there was a massive team effort made to plant up a roadside section of the College with local native species. Many Faith College staff were involved in the planning and ground preparation, while students were involved in the planting. The purpose was to join our site directly with surrounding vegetation areas to create the Tanunda Urban Forest (TUF). Our Year 10 Geography course (2018) made a curriculum link to the TUF and students were involved in data collection relating to Urban Heat Islands. This curriculum link is continuing into 2019, with the vision to provide students with more cross-curricular real-life learning opportunities. A video has been made about the TUF, featuring the work our students were involved in and how it links with other schools (Tanunda Primary School) and community groups. This video is now part of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board’s Facebook page.
