Hello Grizzlies!

We all had a blast at our very first QA Alumni Homecoming Dance held at the Ballard Elks on Saturday, October 12, 2019. DJ Ron Bolin kept the night going and all the food was great. We celebrated the Grizzly legacy and danced the night away showing off our dance moves. I’m proud to be a Grizzly. A big thank you to the Events Committee and all those who attended & helped out.

Our annual picnic back in August was a lot of fun and a great success with over 100 in attendance. I want to thank everyone that attended and all those that helped out!

The Alumni Association is amazing!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season with family and friends.

Save the date for our upcoming Spring Luncheon Saturday, April 4, 2020.

Magnolia MemoriesBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ‘65

Yes, we have them. In particular for some of us they are about Magnolia.

Book three of the Magnolia Historical Society’s Magnolia Midcentury Memories 50’s & 60’s is due out early 2020. This project was facilitated by President and Treasurer Dee St. George and consultant Monica Wooton.

I am fortunate to be one of the contributors to write about the first neighborhood my family moved to from Michigan.

Along with many of the other great writers, the Magnolia Theater and Miss Chester’s flashlight has been exposed!

Please visit the Magnolia Historical Society website to preorder and even order the previous two Magnolia Memories books.

transfer student from Garfield in January 1975, Ms. Woodson took me around the school and introduced me to other faculty members and some of the students as well. She would not allow any of the minority students (that was me) to hang out in the halls or anywhere on school campus when you were supposed to be in class. She wasn’t shy about asking you – “Where is your notebook, books, paper, pencils, etc.?” and “Don’t be late for class!” These days looking back on what was at the time a little irritating to have someone constantly looking over my shoulder to ensure that I was ‘doing the right thing,’ I now am very thankful that Ms. Woodson took the time to take an interest in me to make sure

I “Did The Right Thing!” Mattie went on to serve admirably on the faculties at Meany Middle School and as Guidance Counselor at Garfield High School. She retired after 30 years of service with Seattle Public Schools.

REUNION RECAPSClass of ’44

Class of ’54By Storm Yanicks ’54

The class of 1954 held its 65th reunion this past August. We had a wonderful time catching up with friends we only get to see occasionally. We began with a happy hour in a room of our own at Ruth’s Chris in Bellevue. The next day we had dinner at the Seattle Yacht Club, and we ended the three days with a picnic at Magnolia Park. Our class really enjoys reunions. We are indeed Grizzlies Forever!

Class of ’59

The Queen Anne Class of 1959 celebrated its 60-year reunion on August 17, 2019 at the Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore.131 classmates and guests enjoyed checking name tags and renewing friendships.

Former coach and teacher Walt Milroy was an honored guest, hosted by Karl Kollen. Charlotte Lanz Abbott arranged and took the class picture. Chair of the event, Karin Wittmack Harris welcomed everyone.

Classmate Reverend Stephen Morrison gave the invocation remembering class members who have passed on. Diane Ross Doughty presented a history of Queen Anne High School and highlighted famous graduates. Doug Kinnaird and Jeannette Macdonald reminisced about school day memories. A lovely buffet and dessert followed.

Jo Egan Wiltse, Roberta Schenken Epps, Linda Williams Meyers and Mary Lou Shupe Gregory led the Queen Anne fight song and Alma Mater.

After a round of door prizes, including a large print of the high school donated by Janet Grey Dunford, the Grizzly Class of 1959 said farewell to another wonderful reunion. The Reunion Committee included Chair Karin Wittmack Harris, Barbara Burwell Veitch, Patty Greime Olson, Linda Lewis Johnson, Louis Isquith, Susan Morton Soudah, Gary Olson, Pete Wickstrand, Mary Lou Shupe Gregory, Carolyn F. Smith Black, and Jim Wolf.

The class’ website QA59.weebly.com shows the class picture and has a link to other pictures taken at the reunion.

55th Reunion for QAHS Class ‘64By Helena (Butterfield) Rowse ’64

’64 Grizzly crowd of loyal classmates shared several hours visiting, rekindling friendships, reminiscing and telling stories about our Queen Anne and Magnolia school days. Gratefully we still recall the fun and funny times spent on and off campus as well as the antics that you didn’t really want a parent or teacher to learn about. The evening atmosphere was friendly and warm with lots of ‘happy to see you’ hugs and smiling faces.

Four members from the Class of ‘44, all in their early 90’s, met for their 75th reunion on August 3rd at Mamma Melina Ristorante in Seattle. They recalled long-ago memories and enjoyed the afternoon reviewing classmate photos in the 1944 Grizzly yearbook. The reunion was organized by Chad Manning. Pictured from the left are Jim Jewell, Chuck Wright, Juanita Johnson Nordin, and Chad Manning.

Servers at Channel Marker Pub & Grill in Edmonds, WA kept classmates and guests supplied with beverages and food with enthusiasm.

Two classmates flew in from Ohio and didn’t know that each other were attending this reunion. It’s always nice for non-WA resident classmates to visit Seattle area again, reconnect with friends and see the changes and growth of the city. Seattle neighborhoods, Queen Anne & Magnolia, remain vibrant districts of a great city and the ’64 Grizzly spirit lives on with youthful memories. The Reunion Committee looks forward to celebrating and welcoming all classmates to our 60th Reunion in 2024!

Class of 1969 50-Year Reunion: Truly GoldenBy Helena (Butterfield) Rowse ’64

The QA class of 1969 celebrated a rousing and magical 50-year reunion at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle on Saturday, September 21. One hundred-seventy guests gathered in the same room of the hotel in

which the class prom was held 50 years ago with background music of late 60’s tunes especially put together for the event. Attendees enjoyed a menu of hors d’oeuvres, food stations, desserts

and coffee bar that included individual cakes bearing the “Queen Anne Grizzlies Forever” logo on the marzipan top. The main event went from 6:00p.m.to 11:00 p.m. with an additional after party from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. when hotel chef-prepared pizza was served.

The room was made particularly festive by memorabilia from the school archives, most notably, the original school name lettering that had graced the main entrance of the school since 1909. Mannequins displayed fashion styles from 1969, including school letterman jackets.

Queen Anne ‘69 classmates brought their high-energy QA spirit and were heard to remark that the reunion was “epic” and “the best reunion ever” as well as have been inspired to stay connected over the coming years.

50th Reunion Reminder for Class of ’70

The Class of ’70 will hold their 50th reunion on September 20, 2020 at the Sandpoint Country Club. The co-chairs are Teri St. Onge and Ruben Van Kempen.

Class of ’74

The Class of ’74 enjoyed a wonderful evening on August 10th at the Newport Yacht Club in Bellevue to celebrate our 45th reunion! We dined on BBQ from Pecos Pit, told stories, relived memories, and made plans to get together again.

We are all looking forward to our 50th reunion in 2024. Please keep in touch with our class by joining our Facebook group, Queen Anne High School Class of 1974, or reach out to us at [email protected]. We’d love to have you get involved in planning our 50th reunion to make this one the best yet!

Meeting nearly 70 years later was a delight. Elsie died Sept. 22nd, 2019. John L. Graham ’51 writes of a trip he and classmate William F. West took to California in Sept.1951. board of QAHSAA. Del, who was a Member of the Golden Arrow, was a representative of the Boy Scouts of America, and leader of the Magnolia contingent for many years. Some may remember him as an unabashed member of Channel 5 TV staff for many years, as well as the writer of the cemetery chapter of the book, “Queen Anne, Community on the Hill” which was published in 1993. Shirley Will was known for the fabulous seafood dishes she served, and as Hal’s co-member of the board of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Association, one of many organizations in which they were both involved. I kept these two deaths together because they were close friends and comrades of mine, in spite of our belonging to different generations of Queen Anne grads. I miss them often,

Men & Women of Queen Anne Luncheon Seattle Yacht Club, Friday, Dec.27, 2019By Kim R. Turner ‘61

Over 100 Grizzlies (and spouses) gathered at the Seattle Yacht Club on Friday, December 27th, 2019 to celebrate the holiday season, remember George Varver, whose death brought this luncheon into existence, and to honor Grizzlies past and alums from 1942 forward were in attendance, with Jackie (Gangstee) Thomson ’61 receiving the Edo Vanni (Queen Anne Spirit) Award.

Both the seafood crepes and the very fine chicken dish were enjoyed by those present.

Kim R. Turner ’61 requested that all past and current members of the Queen Anne High School Alumni Association board stand and be recognized. About one-third of those present stood proudly.

The event was honored to share the 50th wedding anniversary of host Roger Jensen ’61 and his wife Sandy.

It was a delightful late morning and early afternoon, one guest being a son of former coach Walter Milroy, who served with honor as coach from 1946-1959, after which he continued his career at Ingraham High School. Walt will turn 100 in February.

GRIZZLY ANGELSOur Association is funded primarily by donations, plus sales of merchandise and raffles. We are unique among alumni groups in not having paid memberships. Your tax deductible gifts are greatly appreciated and needed not just to provide scholarships but also to cover the KUAY, logo merchandise purchases and miscellaneous expenses. All our efforts are by unpaid volunteers. In these difficult times we hope you can find a way to help the QAHSAA continue its mission.
