St . Paul ’s Episcopal Church

Dear People of God,

This month we kick off the Centennial Celebration in earnest.

The block party on the 30th will be our big BBQ! It is a great time

to invite friends, neighbors, alumni, and strangers on the street to

join our party. Think of it like the parable of the wedding banquet. The host,

frustrated over the lack of interest of his “A” guest list, sent his servants to

invite anyone they could find. Jesus said the Kingdom of God is like this.

Being Kingdom people means not just politely inviting one safe person, one

time to our church. It means asking over and over; and, asking total strangers

and casual acquaintances. You can never tell who is going to respond.

We are at our peak attendance at worship in late July and early August. Soon

those who have homes elsewhere will start leaving. How wonderful would it

be if we started filling the pews with those who live here year round? We are

starting an education program this fall for older elementary students to go

with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd which serves younger children.

Who do you know that could benefit from participation?

Why you might ask do I continually bring up invitation? Aren’t the people cur-

rently worshipping at St. Paul’s enough? Of course, we have a wonderful fel-

lowship of Christians with many long-standing friendships. We keep inviting

and searching because it was the pattern of Jesus. He is the one who was al-

ways on the lookout for the lost sheep. He was the one who desired that the

outcast, the broken hearted, the sin sick, and those in bondage be set free by a

powerful encounter with God. He was the one who wanted an ever-

expanding fellowship of love. We are called to accept the challenge.

If we want to have the most powerful and meaningful experience of the Spirit

for ourselves, we have to give it away…spread it around…toss it about…

shout it out. So how hard can it be to start by inviting someone to a BBQ?

You can do it and the Spirit will empower it. This is our party, we are all the

hosts. There will only be guests if you make a list and do the inviting. I’m al-

ready thinking about mine.

In Christ’s service,

Fr. Scott

Greetings from the Mission Partnership with St. Mark's Episcopal Church/Lutheran Church of Grace in Craig. July seems to have moved on very quickly, and the highlight of the month is the workday on our church grounds, as well as our getting together backpacks for Love, INC (In the Name of Christ) for distribution to school children whose families cannot afford the required school supplies.

Since I am a board member of the Fuller Center in Craig, our parish was involved with the Fuller Center bicycling group that was going cross country to support affordable housing for those in need. The group is a breakaway group from Habitat for Humanity, and concentrates on insuring that housing can be constructed in towns across the United States, no matter the size of the town. Craig was not considered to be of suffi-cient size to support a Habitat for Humanity, but the Fuller Center has given us full rec-ognition and the group has property that it is currently developing. The bicycling group was sponsored by congregations in Craig, food and showers and a place to sleep were provided, and the cyclists came out to work on projects as part of their ministry to oth-ers. We were fortunate to get three really hard workers on a really hot day to work in our parish's back yard, where our playground equipment is located. Other volunteers were busy inside putting together backpacks with school supplies while the weeding and 'nasty' work was being done outside. Love INC re-quested that school supplies be given to the organization so that the they could provided school supplies for the needy. We were very fortunate in having a generous congregation that put together ten backpacks toward that ministry goal. We may be small, but we ARE mighty!

The other highlight of the month was that our Bishop's Warden, Fred Goodman and his wife, MaryJane, generously donated a beautiful propane grill and barbeque to the parish, and we had the opportunity to 'fire it up' for our monthly parish dinner after services on the last Saturday of the month. We had a chance to enjoy the grilled meats and picnic fare provided and had a great time together as a parish family.

We are currently go-ing through the proc-ess to register our participants at the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado Convention, which is to be held in the metro-Denver area in October, and for the first time in quite some time will be having full repre-sentation from the parish, both Episcopal and Lutheran. Praise be to God!

Blessings, Bain

Total contributions for June were $17,656 and are below budget $3,635. While contri-butions were higher in June than in May, this is the second month in a row that they have been below budget. For the year through June, total contri-butions were $159,473, over budget by $5,254.

Other income totals $3,785 for the year through June. This amount is also under budget by $2,046 mainly due to planned wedding income that has not been realized and in-kind donations that have not been recorded.

Total expenses for June were $22,648, below budget by $1,089. However, the budget for June included $2,500 for audit services that will be paid in August when the audit is completed. For the year through June, expenses to-taled $143,648, under budget by $7,921. The budget in-cludes $3,000 for building and equipment repairs, none of which has been paid. Adminis-trative expenses are also un-der budget by $4,489 for the year through June.

W OMEN ’ S B I B L E S TUD Y The Women’s Bible Study group is working on the Book of Job. All women are invited to come and join in on the discussion starting at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday in the Parish Library. If you miss a week, not a problem, come anyway.

In the next few weeks, the group will be studying chapters 22 through 25. Chapter 22 deals with Eliphaz showing that man’s goodness doesn’t profit God, Job is accused of op-pression, tells about the world before the flood, and Eliphaz exhorts Job to repentance. In

chapter 23, Job complains that God has withdrawn and he asserts his own integrity and the Divine terrors are talked about. Chapter 24 discusses that wickedness often is unpunished and the wicked shun the light and that there are judgments for the wicked. Bildad shows that man cannot be justified before God in chapter 25.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program begins anew on Sunday, September 22, 2013 for children ages 3 through those entering 3rd grade. We will add at least 3 new 3 year olds this year to our program and we will need extra help.

NEW THIS FALL - We are so pleased to announce that Kristen Slowey has agreed to teach the children in 4th, 5th and 6th grades in a program using "Hands on Bible Learn-ing" Curriculum. She is available to teach on September 22nd and then the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month thereafter.

Is anyone else interested in helping with this exciting curriculum and this age group? We will start using the "office" space of the Atrium area. It would be helpful if someone would help keep us stocked with the needed supplies. Please consider how you can be part of the important Faith Formation of our children.

ALSO NEEDED - A dependable internet-capable desktop or lap-top computer.

Texas, Florida, and Colorado. With all of his traveling, Jim moved about every 2 years so was not able to put down roots.

Jim has 3 daughters, Joanne Erickson, lives in Steamboat Springs, Lisa Ocampo, husband Eduardo and son Daniel, live in London, and Janice DeKeyzer, husband Gregory and daughters Marie Claire and Roane live in New Iberia, Louisiana. Jim raised his family in Spain and Portugal and the family speaks fluent Spanish.

Jim enjoyed skiing, hiking, tennis, and boating until recently when he has had to slow down, so now his hobbies are music enjoyment, family, friends, and many of the local activities such as Strings, seminars and energy discussions.

Jim likes St. Paul’s for the wonderful teachers that Fr. Scott and Fr. Bain are along with Jo Anne and Christine. The congregation is very friendly, helpful, welcoming, and a very interesting group of people to get to know. He likes that St. Paul’s has an inclusive philosophy acknowledging that we recognized that all faiths worship the same God. St. Paul’s Church building is very beautiful, elegant and religious without being too ornamental.

The Men’s Bible study group is extremely pleased to have new members join our men's Bible study, and that we will be working our way through the Gospel of Luke, to in-clude all requisite Old Testament fulfillment of prophecy, understanding of culture, his-tory and geography. Other Gospels will be examined as we progress to see the differ-ences and compare them one to another for a more full understanding.

Here is your “Centennial Question” answer to last month’s question—St. Luke which was carved by Joyce Tibbetts.

Sunday, August 4th, St. Paul’s had guests Susan and her daughter Claire Cahoun from Dallas volunteer to sing for us. They sang Panis Angelicus by Cesar Franck. The music was outstanding! Thank you Susan and Claire. The family comes to Steamboat every summer to Susan’s parent’s cabin near Clarke.

Sunday, August 11th Bryan Garcia from the Emerald City Opera will be singing at St. Paul’s 10:30 a.m. service. The piece he will be singing is from Handel’s Messiah, Comfort Ye.

On August 18th, St. Paul’s will have another guest. Daniel Ocampo who is Jim Erickson’s grandson will be singing. He is 18 years old and sings with the Westminster Abbey choir in London. He has gradu-ated from Westminster Abbey Choir School and is starting univer-sity at Columbia University in Manhattan this fall. You don’t want to miss hearing him!

I walk by an oil portrait of my mother mounted above the sideboard in our dining room several times a day.

Painted in 1942, when my mother was eighteen years old, it depicts a beautiful young lady dressed in her cream

and rose debutante gown, seated on an embroidered bench that we also have in our home. In those days, it

was common practice in our great cities to introduce young ladies to society at a gala debutante ball, a “coming

out” party, if you will. Today, this custom is rarely celebrated in our more culturally integrated and pluralistic

society.

Recently, as I contemplated the more active role in the community that our Rector, Vicar and vestry have been

planning on the eve of our second century, I began to visualize St. Paul’s as another “beautiful lady,” a metaphor

for the debutante of old. We are, in effect, creating our own coming out party in the spirit of Jesus’ mandate to

grow and multiply and spread the Word. We are well on the road to creating our own chapter of the Episco-

pal Service Corps, preparing to welcome our first five young interns in late summer, 2014. We are embarking

on our second full year of our Mission Partnership with St. Mark’s in Craig, a union that promises to bear fruit

for the Episcopal Church in the Yampa Valley and beyond. And, our Centennial Committee is creating imagina-

tive and exciting events that will feature St. Paul’s prominently in the community at large, welcoming more peo-

ple into our celebration.

I hope you will all share in the excitement of our “coming out,” as we carry our faith outside the walls of our

sanctuary and offer ourselves as a vibrant place to enter, rest and pray.

God bless you all,

Roger
