“Common sense and a sense of humor are the

same thing, moving at differ-ent speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, danc-ing.” – William James

I heard this quote on the way to work on Jan. 11 (James’ 170th birthday), and it struck a chord with me with regard to two important characteristics in life and in our Brotherhood.

When I heard this quote, I resolved to learn more about this man and share it with you.

I found a treasure trove. Wil-liam James was an American philosopher and psychologist who wrote influential books on pragmatism, psychology and philosophy.

Instead of reciting all of the reasons that he is a fascinat-ing guy who is worth your time to learn about, I will share some of his quotes. His words impart wisdom far better than mine.

William James (1842-1910) was anAmerican philosopher and psychologist. He wrote influential books about pragma-tism, psychology and more. Photo cour-tesy of Wikipedia.

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.

Acceptance of what has happenedis the first step to overcoming

the consequences of any misfortune.

The art of being wiseis the art of knowing what to overlook.

If you believe that feeling bad or worryinglong enough will change a past or future event,

then you are residing on another planetwith a different reality system.

Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power.

Compared to what we ought to be,we are half awake.

Our errors are surely not suchawfully solemn things. In a world where we are so

certain to incur them in spite of all our caution,a certain lightness of heart seems healthier

than this excessive nervousness on their behalf.

The deepest principle in human natureis the craving to be appreciated.

Truth is what works.

Everyone needs a pat on the back once in awhile. Help our Fraternity publically recognize our Brothers by nominating someone for the Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar Award.

Winning would be great, but the simple act of nominating Brothers sends a positive and powerful message – they and their contributions are valued. And here is a bonus – nomi-nations for these awards also help your chapter meet one of the criteria for the Three-Star Chapter Award.

The Alpha Chi Sigma Scholar Award encourages and recog-nizes outstanding scholarship among collegiate members of the Fraternity.

The winner receives $1,000 in addition to a scroll, a schol-arship key and a paid trip to Conclave. A biographical sketch of the recipient(s) will be published in the annual awards issue of The HEXA-GON.

A nominee must have been a member of Alpha Chi Sigma for one year and must be enrolled in an institution of higher learning at the time of nomination.

Undergraduate nominees must have completed the junior year at the time of nomi-nation.

Recognize your Brothers andtheir achievements

Graduate nominees may be nominated based upon both their undergraduate and graduate records upon the completion of their first year of graduate study.

Graduate students also may be nominated, based upon their graduate records alone, after admission to candidacy for the terminal degree in the field of graduate study.

Any member of the Fraterni-ty may submit a nomination.

Nominations must include:

• A biographical sketch of the nominee.

• Two letters of recom-mendation by faculty members of the institu-tion at which the student is enrolled.

• Transcripts of all academ-ic work.

• A high-res photograph.• The address and tele-

phone number of the nominee, including sum-mer address if different.

According to the Associated Press, one in two recent college graduates is unemployed or underemployed. By partnering with Gradspring, Alpha Chi Sigma is working to ensure that its members do not suffer this fate.

Gradspring is a career resource for college seniors and recent graduates that focuses only on career opportunities that:

• Require fewer than two years experience for employment consideration.

• Require a bachelor’s degree for consideration.• Pay a salary commensurate with industry/geographic stan-

dards.

New partnership makes yourjob search easier Gradspring does not post multi-level marketing, work-from-

home, commission only or pay-to-work jobs.

In addition to jobs, Gradspring also offers its members access to a bundle of services that assist in the transition from student to working professional.

Gradspring is currently working with hundreds of employers across a wide spectrum of fields and adds roughly 100 new jobs per day to its database.

Gradspring is the first career site for recent graduates to use the freemium/premium model. Users who sign up for a free membership can search and view jobs, but in order to unlock the complete suite of Gradspring tools and to apply for opportu-nities, Gradspring charges a subscription fee.

Alpha Chi Sigma, through its Gradspring partnership, is offering its members, both young alumni and collegiate, a deeply dis-counted Gradspring subscription. The terms of the discount are:

Membership Term Alpha Chi Sigma Rate

Standard Rate

1 Month $17.50 $35.003 Months $37.50 $75.00

6 Months (with Guarantee)

Gradspring is working to build relationships with employers in the chemistry and hard science fields to ensure that Alpha Chi Sigma’s members have ample opportunity to work within their chosen academic disciplines after graduation.

Meet the ProfessionalsWashington, D.C. Professional Chapter and Kansas City Profressional Group

Washington, D.C.Professional ChapterWashington, D.C. Profes-sional Chapter (WPC) was originally founded in 1911 as an alumni club but went inactive around 1913. It was reactivated in 1923 as a professional chapter and now has the distinction of being the oldest continuously active professional chapter.

WPC is active with the other chapters in the district: Alpha Pi, Alpha Rho, Delaware Valley Pro Chapter, Gamma Omicron and Gamma Omega.

WPC Brothers host the annual Shrimp Fest (a casual, low key chance to get together in September) and have attend-ed the annual outing to the Aberdeen Ironbirds baseball game since DVPC began the tradition.

We also have attended sev-eral installations of new chap-ters, both within the district (including Gamma Omicron and Gamma Omega) and

in other districts (including Delta Alpha).

We have hosted outings to local sporting events (especially hockey games), and we’re always willing to play tour guide for visiting Brothers.

We always enjoy any excuse to get together with Brothers from out of town – what we affectionately refer to as “emergency meetings!”

We extend an open invitation to all of our Brothers to come visit us.

For more information about Washington, D.C. Pro, contact President Kip Nalley, Alpha Sigma 1990.

The Washington, D.C. Professional Chapter attends Delaware Valley Pro Chapter’s an-nual outing to an Aberdeen Ironbirds baseball game and picnic.

The Kansas City Professional Group meets once a month for dinner and hosts many other local activities, in-cluding social trips, outreach events and local outings.

Kansas CityProfessional GroupThe Kansas City Professional Group has been active since 2009. We are a fairly small group that meets once a month for dinner.

In 2011, we held a recruit-ment picnic, which has since become an annual event that gives all of our families

a chance to come together for a day of food, fun and brotherhood. Other activi-ties include social trips, such as our annual outing to the KC Renaissance Faire, and providing assistance with St Louis Professional Chapter outreach events.

We also are active within our district, visiting collegiate chapters in the area, provid-ing PICs as requested and attending the Central District Conclave.

For more information about the Kansas City Professional Group, contact Oliver Pen-rose, Gamma Theta 2003.
