Another big year for MHS tennisMiddlesboro girls’ and boys’ tennis teams finished the year on a positive note with a
1-2 finish in regional competition. The boys were regional runners up to Corbin while
the girls captured the regional team title.
Pictured from left in the bottom photo are Assistant coach Sandy Wilson, Jared Barton,
Chris Aker, Akash Patel, Roger Uy, Adam Crawford and coach Benny Collins. (not
pictured Noah Robinson). Akash Patel qualified for state tournament play by virtue of
his finish in regional singles play. He went on to win his first round match at the state
before finally being eliminated in second round action.
The regional championship for the Middlesboro ladies was their fourth consecutive
regional title and their eighth in the last ten years. In the top photo from left are (Back
Row) Coach Benny Collins, Trinity Goodman, Emily Crawford, Natalie Dubin,
Rachel Maiden and assistant coach Sandy Wilson; (Front Row) Priya Mohan and Mary
Wilson.
Several talented players will return for Middlesboro next year, but the school will be
looking to replace Coach Benny Collins who has taken over as the head tennis coach
at Lincoln Memorial University.

Putting him in his place!Billy Joe Idol of Middlesboro has been a
sports official for nearly 50 years. He’s
called more strikes than a labor union, and
while you may not have always agreed with
his calls on every occasion, few would say
that they thought he treated them unfairly.
That’s why the folks associated with the
Middlesboro High School baseball program
decided to put him in his place.............right
behind home
plate where
he had spent
so much of
his time during games. Former MHS head, and current
assistant baseball coach, Billy Powell, spearheaded a
project to have a plaque cemented in the backstop at the
Middlesboro High School baseball field to honor the
longtime friend and supporter of local athletes. All of
us here at Pinnacle Sports View join in congratulating
Billy Joe and in adding our thanks.
Jones headed to GeorgetownCongratulations to Middlesboro’s A. J. Jones who is headed to Georgetown College on
a football scholarship. Jones is shown here on signing day with MHS football coach
Kenny Roark, Jones’s parents, and MHS principal Sheila Smith.

Cramer announced the
launch of LittleLeagueCoach.org,
an online educational resource for
Little League Baseball and
Softball coaches, managers and
volunteers.
LittleLeagueCoach.org
combines audio and video with
interactive graphic and design ele-
ments to create a usable, interest-
ing and informative resource for
Little League coaches and man-
agers. The website includes more
than 70 interactive, full-resolution,
near DVD-quality live-action on
demand videos and articles that
demonstrate useful coaching
drills, techniques and lessons that
are specific to the coaching of
Little League players. All of the
videos are accompanied by print-
ready content, enabling coaches to
bring what they learn on the web-
site to the practice field, and can
be organized and saved for future
viewing. LittleLeagueCoach.org is
password-protected and is avail-
able only to registered Little
League® Baseball and Softball
coaching staff.
“Little League coaches and
managers are charged with a great
responsibility, to plan and execute
a positive, lasting impact on the
experience of every child who
plays Little League baseball or
softball. Since we began this proj-
ect, it has been our aspiration to
provide Little League coaches
with a resource that can help them
to encourage kids, while simulta-
neously teaching them the funda-
mentals of baseball and softball,”
said Nicholas Caringi, Director of
Os, LL Baseball and Softball.
“Cramer is proud to have
worked with Little League on this
project. We believe that
LittleLeagueCoach.org is an out-
standing resource that will help
nurture a whole generation of chil-
dren in sports and inform thou-
sands of dedicated coaches who
selflessly donate their time and
effort,” said Ken London, GM,
Special Programming, Cramer.

Football Alignment for 2009-2010
Few changes to the HS football
alignment expected for 2009-10The final draft to the alignment of
teams for the 2009-10 football seasons
apparently isn’t going to change things
very much from what’s in place now..
“The Board chose to move forward by
tweaking the current alignment and make
minor adjustments rather than starting
over and aligning top to bottom or using
other variables,” KHSAA Assistant
Commissioner Julian Tackett said. “With
only one year into a new playoff system,
there really wasn’t enough data to make
major revisions.”
Individual changes from the 2007 and
2008 alignment made for 2009 and 2010
were:
Class 1A: Walton-Verona placed in
District 1-3; Berea placed in District 1-5;
Evarts and Cumberland deleted from
District 1-7 (due to consolidation into
Harlan County)
Class 2A: no changes
Class 3A: Cawood deleted from District
3-6 (due to consolidation into Harlan
County); Fleming County moved from
District 3-6 to 3-7; Magoffin County
moved from District 3-8 to 3-6
Class 4A: no changes
Class 5A: Bullitt Central moved to
District 5-3; Cooper added to District 5-5;
Bryan Station moved to Class 6A
District 6-8; Harlan County added to
District 5-8
Class 6A: Bullitt Central moved to Class
5A District 5-3; Shelby County moved to
District 6-4 from District 6-8; Bryan
Station added to District 6-8
The newly formed Harlan County
High School will assume the AAA sched-
ule that is currently in place for Cawood
for the 2009 season. They will move up
to AAAAA beginning next year.

Outdoor Truthswith Gary Miller
I’m not normally, a very moody guy. I try
to be the same each day; but I do have my
moments. Right now, I can tell that I’m a
little edgy.
Most of the time when I
have these spells, I try to
find the source of my
angst. For instance,
antibiotics turn me into
my Mr. Hyde. They make
me impatient with myself
and others, so I try to steer
clear of them.
Today I’m not on any
medication, I slept well,
and there’s not too much
in my life that ought to
cause any undue stress.
And yet here I am, feeling like my week
long fishing trip has been canceled
because of inclement weather.
That’s not the case, but its close. I want
to go fishing!
Last week I floated the Powell River with
a friend. I really don’t have the words to
describe the fun that I had. It was not just
the fish, but it was also the experience,
the scenery, the solitude, and the conver-
sation. My problem is I want to go back!
Today! But instead I’m painting a bath-
room. How’s that for my wonderful out-
door experiences.
I used to say that I don’t paint, wallpaper,
or associate with anyone who does. That
was not true, but it did give those around
me a good idea of how bad I hated to
paint and wallpaper.
In order to keep my wife, I took up the
brush. I know however,
that I was not built for the
brush; I was built for the
boat. I know that, because
there’s never been one
time that I have been fish-
ing and longed to have
just one more bathroom
to paint. Whatever hap-
pened to paneling any-
way? And then some red-
neck decided that he was
going to paint the panel-
ing. And now we’re back
in this vicious cycle.
While my friends are firing up the grill or
reeling in another fish, I’m putting anoth-
er coat on a bathroom wall that no one
will probably ever see.
Am I bitter? Yes. Am I mad? Yes. Do I
have ever right to be a little edgy?
Absolutely! Will it make any difference?
Nope.
In my absence, my heart will grow just a
little fonder of the times that I am able to
do that which I love to do. In the mean-
time, I’ll try to smile and act like I’m
starting to like associating with people
who paint and wallpaper.
