We had a well-deserved rest two weeks ago especially to all the busy bodies of the 50th Golden Anniversary of our club and the DISCON 2015. Now, with full of energies and motiva-tions we have accumulated, we are again back on track to do projects. This coming Sunday April 19, 2015 is the District Tree Planting and Caravan at Tanay Rizal. There will be a motor-cade coming from different locations assigned to each zone. Our Zone meeting area is at the Shell Station, Marcos H-way beside Town and Country Subdivision. The Caravan will proceed to Camp Capinpin for the Tree Planting and some fellowship activities. All are invited to join either bring your own car or by carpooling. This Saturday, April 18, Rotaract Chairman Peter Co and Rtn. Rogel Santiago organized an orientation for a new Rotaract Club at Brgy. Malanday. The orientation will be at Pogi’s Place, 100 C. Mejia St., Malanday, Marikina City. This will be the 3rd Rotaract Club sponsored by our club. Congratulations in advance to Chairman Peter Co and Rtn. Rogel Santiago. Next weekend, April 25-26, 2015 is the District Assembly (DISTAS 2015) at Camp John Hay Convention Center, Baguio City. All our incoming officers and directors are obliged to attend their respective training workshops. On the other hand, all members especially the new mem-bers are encourage to attend and update and learn more about the new Rotary. President-Elect Willie Reyes will give details on the program, accommodations and fellowship activities of the district and our club. This coming May 10, 2015 will be our Family Outing at Bosay Resort, Antipolo Rizal. Family Outing Chairman Manny Pecho and his committee members PP RonieMasangkay and Dir. Jerome Josef did an ocular inspection last week and has made reservation for the Veranda 3 Cottage. Aside from food trip and all day swimming at the wave pool, exciting games and fam-ily activities are being prepared by the committee. Raffle prizes will be given to the group and individual winners. So, lets all go and bring our family on May 10, Sunday at Bosay Resort, Antipolo Rizal.

I would like to remind each and every one that we still have obligations that needs to be settled to our club. For those who have forgotten, Treasurer Jerome Josef will be distributing billing statements to all concerned members. Please be guided accordingly. Thank you.

Happy 385th Foundation Day Marikina! (Part 1)

Marikina City celebrates its 385th Foundation Day today, April 16, 2015. The theme this year, “Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present, Envisioning the Future”. In line with the city's celebration, a series of activities are set for the annual Ka-Angkan celebration, which is a family reunion of Marikeños na-tionwide and worldwide. The opportunity is for the current youth to get acquainted with previous generations of relatives and ancestors. There will be 35 clans participating this year

Early history The first settlers were descendants of LakanDula in the 1560s and the area is part of Kingdom of Tondo, followed by Augustinians were the first to arrive at the valley in the 1570s, at the spot known as Chorillo in Barangka. In 1572, Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish was established. Next came the Jesuits in 1630, in a place now called Jesus dela Peña (Jesus of the Rocks). Here, the Jesuits established a mission and built a chapel still known today as Jesus dela Pena Chapel. Fray Pedro de Arce, apostolic ruler of the Archbishop of Manila at that time, approved transfer of ecclesiastical control and supervision to the Jesuits, and settled the place as a town.

In 1687, the town was called "Mariquina" after Felix Berenguer de Marquina, who was the governor-general at that time, and the town was declared a pueblo under the Spanish colonial government. In 1690, Don Juan Pimentel, Alcalde de Tondo, gave orders to vacate and demolish the visita of Jesus dela Peña due to the turbulent river (Marikina River now) which floods the area during rainy season. The visita could not accom-modate the growing population of the community. This finally led the friars to cross the river and find higher ground to establish a larger church - Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish - and subsequently created an inde-pendent parish in Mariquina.[citation needed]

By the 19th century, Hacienda Mariquina was owned and administered by the Tuazon family and had be-come the largest in the Philippines. The hacienda was declared a mayorazgo by the Spanish colonial govern-ment. Don Juan Gregorio became the first Alcalde Capitan of Mariquina in 1822. In 1887, Mariquina emerged as a town of shoemakers.

During the Philippine Revolution in 1896, Andrés Bonifacio arrived in Mariquina before he and his Katipuneros proceeded to the caves of Montalban. Mariquina became the capital of the Province of Manila in 1898, when the Philippine Revolution broke out, a period when Philippine Independence was declared by Emilio Aguinaldo, the first Philippine president. Don Vicente Gomez became the first AlcaldePresidente of Mariquina in 1900.

20th century On June 11, 1901, shortly after the United States took possession of the Philippines, its name officially be-came "Marikina". The province of Rizal was created by virtue of Act No. 137 by the First Philippine Commis-sion which was acting as the unicameral legislative body in the island of Luzon. Marikina, along with many other towns around Manila, was incorporated into the new province.

To be continued next week

MAGAZINE MONTH

In the Rotary Calendar we celebrate April as Magazine Month. Rotarians around the world are required to compulsorily subscribe to one of 31 regional publica-tions or “The Rotarian”, which was the first Rotary Magazine and is the official Rotary magazine. All share certain common information but the regional publica-tions are in the relevant local language and/or reflect issues relevant to the re-gion.

Subscription to The Rotarian is compulsory for Rotarians in the USA and Canada. Outside of these countries Rotarians must subscribe either to the official maga-zine or one of the regional publications. The only exemption is if a Rotarian is not literate in English or the language of one of the regional publications. The re-gional magazines are published under licences that have to be renewed every five years and must have an editorial Board of current and past Governor Repre-sentatives.

The purpose of the magazine is to advance the Object of Rotary in all its aspects. The National Rotarian, as it was originally called was launched in 1911 so there has been an official magazine for almost as long as Rotary has been around. Unsurprisingly regional magazines developed fairly early in Rotary history to ca-ter for countries where English was not a first language, although not before Great Britain declared its own version of Rotary as early as 1915 with the “Rotary Magazine”. In fact RIBI (Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland) remains the only part of Rotary that has a regional structure between Districts and Rotary Interna-tional – but that is another story. The first non-English magazines were Rotary (Italy) and Brasil Rotario in 1924, followed by El Rotario de Chile in 1927.
