Greetings, Brother Knights!
I just want to write this brief message to wish you a
Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!
For those of you who do not know me, I am William
Cassese, and I am a seminarian from the Diocese of
Rockville Centre. I am blessed to call the Parish of Saint
Ignatius Loyola in Hicksville my home parish, and am
also blessed, as a third degree Knight, to call Knights of
Columbus Council #2520, named in memory of Joseph
Barry, my home council of the Knights. I reside at
Cathedral Seminary House of Formation, where my
program of priestly formation currently takes place. At the
same time, I also study at St. John’s University in Queens,
with a major course of study in philosophy and a minor
course in theology. Every moment in the seminary and at
St. John’s is vital for my formation in my pursuit of
ordination, should God so will it. And I am so grateful for
the support of you, my Brother Knights, in this journey
upon which I have embarked. Without your support, both
in prayer and in financial sponsorship, it would be very
difficult for me to follow what I believe to be my God-
given vocation. Therefore, I am most grateful and most
thankful to all of you for making this opportunity possible
for me, for it is your prayers and support that, as cliché
as it sounds, is the wind beneath my wings.
I hope to be able to see all of you in the upcoming
weeks. In the meantime, I would like to wish you and
your families a Blessed and Merry Christmas. May the
peace of the Christ child reign in your hearts forever!
Fraternally Yours in Christ,
William L. Cassese
COLUMBIETTES
CORNER
Dear Sister Columbiettes:
Wow, I cannot believe the New Year is upon us. Happy
New Year! As we enter 2014, let us recount the last two
months of Columbiette business.
Our Oktoberfest event was a huge success and thanks to
Marie Hubschman and her committee for a wonderful time. I
actually won one of the prizes, the gift certificate to one of the
restaurants, The Oak Chalet. We had dinner there with our
good friends and enjoyed it so much.
November came upon us and on a personal note, I would
like to thank all of you for your good wishes as my daughter
Jennifer was married on November 8, 2013. I have had a
wonderful year preparing for this event and also becoming
president of the Columbiettes.
On November 18, 2013, our delegates and I attended the
Nassau Chapter Christmas party at the Glen Cove Council. A
great time was had by all. On November 21, 2013, Memorare
Council hosted the Major Degree ceremony. I want to thank
all our members who were part of this ceremony and who
work so hard each year to make this a beautiful ceremony.
At our General Membership meeting in November we
celebrated a Thanksgiving Prayer and Feast. Father Jim
Stachacz led us in song and prayer and we all spoke about
what we were thankful for. Also in attendance was our Grand
Knight, Doug Quinn and Past Grand Knight, Bill McGough.
We presented Bill McGough with our gift in conjunction with
his testimonial and to thank Bill for all his work as Grand
Knight. We then enjoyed all the thanksgiving goodies,
including pumpkin bread, apple strudel, and cranberry jello.
Thanks to Carmela and Grace for taking care of the hospitality
for this special meeting.
The bus trip to Empire Casino scheduled for November 29,
had to be re-scheduled as we did not get enough attendance.
We decided to re-schedule for January 15, 2014, but also
changed the destination to Mohegan Sun Casino. The trip will
cost $42.00 and there will be a $15.00 food coupon and $15.00
wheel bet. The bus pick up and drop off will be at St. Ignatius
School parking lot. Please call Joan Chwalisz or Anne Murphy
for your reservations.
The last weekend in November, we had a membership
drive along with Knights at all the masses on Saturday and
Sunday. Thanks to all the Columbiettes, Margaret Breiman,
Peggy Gill, Maria Tabone, Anne Murphy and Kathy Dolan for
their attendance and helping out. We can always be open to
new members and we need everyone to pass the word in
getting women to join our wonderful organization.
Our Christmas Party was held on December 4, 2013 at the
Milleridge Inn. We had 35 people in attendance and what a
wonderful party it was. The room was beautifully decorated
Columbiette Meetings are held at the Joseph Barry
Council Hall, 45 Heitz Place, Hicksville, on the
fourth Tuesday of each month at 8:00. All Catholic
women, ages 18 and over, are invited to become
members. For more information call:
President – Jackie Sciubba at 516-579-0480
and the Carolers came to sing and made it so festive. The food
was delicious and I think all can agree it was a welcomed
change from our traditional party at the Council. We played
some games and had a Chinese Auction –we all had a chance
to win prizes and so much fun. We did our traditional grab
bag left-right game and all had good laugh. I want to thank
Maria Tabone for all her hard work in reaching out to vendors
to donate all the prizes and Diana Sturges for her work to
make this a Christmas party to remember.
The next evening, Dec. 5, I, along with few other members,
attended Chapter’s Chinese Auction party at Chen’s Buffet in
Levittown. We also had chances to win more prizes as we
raise money for charity and to socialize with other
Columbiettes from the other auxiliaries. December 6 was the
300 Club dinner and I saw many Columbiettes at this event.
All were raving about how wonderful our Christmas party
was.
The Christmas holiday is upon us and hope all of you had a
blessed Christmas and wishing all of you a happy and healthy
new year.
Looking forward in 2014, as mentioned before, the bus trip
is January 15 to Mohegan Sun. Thanks to Joan for taking on
chairing this event. There will also be games and raffles on
bus. Kathy Dolan and I are working on “Dare to Wear Red,
Women’s Heart Health Event on February 8, 2014 at the
Council. Rose Walker has agreed to be a speaker at this event.
I have also secured a singer/dj for this event. So let’s get our
dancing shoes on (maybe you have red ones). Thanks to Pat
Harran for taking the reservations.
One other reminder, please remember to bring to our
General membership meeting in January any items you are
donating for the Birthright Shower, which we will be hosting
at Joseph Barry Council on February 17, 2014.
Upcoming events:
January 15- Bus Trip to Mohegan Sun
January 20-Chapter Meeting
January 21- Board Meeting
January 28- General Membership Meeting
February 8- Dare to Wear Red- Dance
February 17- Birthright Shower- Chapter Meeting
I want to take this time to thank all my Sister Columbiettes
for all their support and who have helped with making all our
gatherings/events a success.
God Bless,
President Jackie Sciubba

Brothers
Think you are too old for coverage? Maybe not
You are never too young or too old to consider
purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for
coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance
policy can be just the thing you need.
When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage
will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the
same policies when you are older.
If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that
you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be
able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in
2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products
was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether
or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so
underwriting standards for risk and age apply.
This change came in response to a question I’ve heard
before: “My wife and I are almost 80, do the Knights offer
anything to take care of our final expenses?” And it can also
help the members who thought they were “too old” to attain
our coverage. This extension of our coverage ages allows me
to help members I couldn’t help before. I look forward to
discussing coverage with you.
