Volume 55 No. 4 January-February 2015 Our 91st Year
Brothers:
People tell me that once we reach the New Year, our fraternal
year is essentially over. It doesn’t look that way from where I sit.
Many of our biggest and most important events lie ahead. In
January we have the Winter Picnic, hosted for the last time by
PGK Jim Mulligan. We’ll also be conducting the free throw
contest probably on the afternoon of January 17th
. Organizations
that took a Christmas break will resume their usual activities.
On Friday January 23rd
we will be hosting a county wide 3rd
Degree Ceremonial here at Joseph Barry Council. I strongly urge
all of our 2nd
Degree members to consider attending and becoming
a full member in the order.
January also marks the anniversary of the awful Supreme Court ruling that has resulted in the
deaths of millions of unborn Americans. There are a number of ways to actively demonstrate our
opposition to this travesty. Some are listed elsewhere in this issue. At a minimum I urge all to pray
for these souls and for enlightenment within our elected officials.
I also ask all of our members to consider becoming more active in the Kenny Club. As you know,
thanks to the efforts of PGKs Doug Quinn, Gerry Mulholland, Harry Loomis and others, we’ve been
able to significantly improve our financial position. To continue this momentum we need more help.
Kenny Club officers will be approaching some members asking them to join one of our expanded
committees. All are welcome. Please see one of us if you’d like to help.
Finally my family and I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2015.

Dear Sister Columbiettes:

brought you joy and peace.
In review of the last two months, we had Nassau
Chapter’s dinner at BeniHana, a great time was had by
all- having dinner prepared right in front of us was a
great experience. The delegates and I went to the

won-Thanks to the Glen Cove council for doing a
wonderful celebration. On November 20th
we had the
Major Degree, which went well. Congratulations to
Gloria Viruet on making her Major degree. Thanks to
all of our members who were part of the Major Degree
team. We ended November with our Thanksgiving
prayer and feast at our General Membership meeting.
We passed our budget at this meeting and had finalized
our plans for our Christmas party. Deacon George led us
in a prayer ceremony and we all enjoyed holiday foods.
Thanks to Barbara Maier and Anne Murphy for taking
care of hospitality for this meeting.
On December 3, we had our Christmas Party at the
council. Thanks to Gerard Mulholland and his wife for
all their work in preparing and serving the food. I want
to thank Diana and Carmela for all their planning and
making a great party for all. It was wonderful to
celebrate with all my sister Columbiettes.

this new version.
At the Children’s Christmas Party, the Council honored Sean
Tuohy (left) for many years helping Santa distribute gifts to
the children.

Pro Life
(From the DRVC Respect Life Office)
On January 22 our nation will mark the 42nd
anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court
decision that made abortion legal throughout the U.S.
Since that tragic decision, more than 56 million
children’s lives have been lost to abortion, and many
suffer that loss — often in silence.
Join thousands of Catholics across the country
coming together in prayer for a “culture of life” from
Saturday, January 17 – Sunday, January 25!
To register to be part of this movement of prayer and
witness for life, visit www.9daysforlife.org
Additional ways to participate in 9 days of prayer,
penance and pilgrimage:
1. Participate in local events, or plan one of your own!
Example: Gather friends to pray a rosary using pro-life
rosary prayer intentions. Other resources are also
available.
2. Follow us on Facebook, join the event and share the
daily 9 Days for Life posts.
3. Invite your friends to join 9 Days for Life! Promotional
