v o l u m e 5 5 n u m b e r 2 November/December 2018 News from the Branch Committee by Don MacQueen, Chair Here’s some good news: a few weeks ago, Joseph Vassar vol- unteered his truck and his time to drive to Oregon and bring back Greg and Olga Reznick’s trailer full of sound equipment, which Greg had asked be donated to the Branch. Much thanks to Joseph and Olga for enabling this! We will no longer need to borrow gear for our two larger events, Asilomar and the Valentine’s Ball. The RSCDS Annual General Meeting is held in November each year. We, the SF Branch, get seven votes on any motions put forth for the AGM, and for membership on various RSCDS committees. This year, the only motion was to NOT raise the annual HQ dues. We like that! Otherwise, voting for committee members is important, since obviously we want the best people possible running the RSCDS. Since most of us don’t personally know the candidates, we have to rely on those few who do. Votes have already been submitted for this year, but in future years, if you know any of the candidates and have any recommendations, please let someone on the Branch Com- mittee know. Finally, I’d like to mention that we just recently signed the contract for the 2020 Asilomar workshop. Yes, that far in ad- vance! Thus, we know now that the 2020 Asilomar Weekend Workshop will be on Halloween weekend. Start thinking about your costumes! Hmmm. I guess that wasn’t final. We’d like to thank Patti Cobb for four years of Asilomar hard work and leadership and welcome Sheena MacQueen as our next Asilomar Chair. Notes on upcoming Monthly Party Dances By Bruce Herbold

• In January we lost the devisor of Mrs Stewart's Jig -- Frans Ligtmans (3 April 1932 - 16 January 2018)

Excerpt from biography written by Thistle Club Members: For many years Frans was the life and soul of the Thistle Club. She had a strong personality and was not always easy to deal with, but she was an exceptionally good teacher. She did a lot to promote SCD in Eindhoven and elsewhere in the Netherlands and even abroad. This was also recognized by the RSCDS who awarded her a scroll, a great honour!

• Seagreen by John Drewry, was a hit at the Youth Weekend West ball. John Drewry wrote Seagreen while visiting the Paris Branch in 1989. He had the additional connection with Paris in that his birthday was Bastille Day – July 14. Robespierre was famously dedicated to the tenets of the French Revolution and was described by Thomas Carlyle as ‘the Seagreen Incorruptible,” i.e. he was as incorruptible as the sea was green Those tenets led him to support the death by guillotine of thousands who were deemed a threat to the new France – a fate that finally also overcame Robespierre. He is the only major revolutionary figure not to have any national monument to him, aside from one sub-urban Metro station that bears his name.

• We are also putting Greg Reznick's dance into regular monthly rotation, in addition to its single appearance last spring.

• Hooked on Bells was written by Irene Patterson as a farewell to Rachel Pusey and Dilip Sequeira, when they left Washington to come here.

• The Scallywag is one of two locally composed dances that were pub-lished in Bk 52. I suspect we will get to Linda Henderson's Trip to Timber Ridge in the near future.

• Fair Donald and Donald Bane both refer to Donald III of Scotland who appears in 'that Scottish play' as Donalbain.

Dance Musician Workshop

Taught by

Chris Duncan (fiddle)

and

Catherine Strutt (piano)

Saturday, November 3rd

Arlington Community Church, 52 Arlington Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94707

The RSCDS San Francisco Branch is sponsoring a Musician Workshop taught by Chris Duncan (fiddle) and Catherine Strutt (piano), multi award winning instrumentalists from Australia who will be playing at the Asilomar Weekend, the prior weekend. They are Australia's longest-performing Scottish music duo, beginning their partnership 30 years ago. As dancers themselves from a very early age, they understand what makes great dance music and thrive on bringing to the dance their invigorating musical vitality bursting with infectious energy, drive, color and groove.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 3 from 10 am – 4 pm at the Arlington Community Church, 52 Arlington Ave., Berkeley CA 94707. Chris and Catherine prefer to play without sheet music so that they can connect more closely with the dancers and will teach this approach at the workshop.

Chris and Catherine will also be playing for the RSCDS San Francisco Monthly Party that evening at the same hall and non-dancing workshop participants are welcome to come listen.

Scholarships are available for RSCDS members. See the attached flyer for more details and registration instructions.
