I was recently leading a team meeting in our office on a municipal bridge aid project that has some unique geo- metric challenges. We discussed several solutions for roadway alignments, bridge types, etc. when it occurred to me that another engineer in the office may have encoun- tered a similar situation. Sure enough, this senior engi- neer had dealt with a somewhat similar situation and pro- duced a set of plans from 1996 that provided excellent guidance for our current project. As the project discus- sion continued, and after checking a few dates, we real- ized that this set of plans was produced when the junior engineer on the team was in the fourth grade. This conversation started me thinking about the next gen- eration of engineers. Depending on where you are in your career, these engineers could be transitioning into an ownership in your firm, starting to manage projects, being mentored by you or in the case of a junior engineer still be in grade school. I wondered for the last group are we as a profession, or as SENH, doing enough to educate and encourage them to become structural engineers. This is hardly a new thought as it was being discussed when I was in college and more recently in the February issue of Structure Magazine. In general, I think SENH does an excellent job with students who have already made the choice to be engineers. We annually hold a meeting at UNH, provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships and have made good progress in improving our communications with UNH and NHTI. For students in high school or earlier, we do not currently offer any outreach. There are fortunately many, many programs which do offer education and support for younger students nearly 50 of which can be found at the following site: http://www.engineeringedu.com/competitions.html I would be interested in our members thoughts on the next generation of struc- tural engineers and what we as an organization could do to educate them about our profession. 2011-2012 SENH BOD Goals For the upcoming SENH calendar year, the SENH Board has set three goals for the upcoming year which will be updated in each newsletter: Scholarship - Establish a dedicated fund for SENH scholarships. This was a goal from last year that needs additional research over the next year. This goal was discussed at the last Board of Directors meeting and it was agreed to solicit our membership for input. Specifically, should the fund be focused on scholarships or should it be broad- ened to encompass educational opportunities in general. broadened scope could include sponsorship of individuals for training, conferences, etc. that pro-vide a benefit to structural engineers. Please contact any Board member if you have a preference.

    • Improved Record Keeping - SENH has existed as a formal organization since 1995 and since that time a number of documents, email, etc has been generated. This goal includes central storage of past and future documents as well as policies for future record retention. We have begun the process of digitizing past SENH records and be-gun research for web-based storage solutions.

    • Finalize SENH Policies - Over the past several years, the SENH Board of Directors have prepared and approved 15 policies to help guide the organization and improve continuity (see http://www.senh.org/by-laws#Policies). There are several additional policies in development that will be finalized over the next year so that all incomplete polices have been addressed. The final two unfinished SENH polices are in draft form and will be completed by the end of this (meeting) year.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting and if you have any ques-tions or comments please feel free to contact me at (603) 669-5555 or mailto:[email protected].

UNH 2012 Fall Career & Internship Fair by Linda McNair-Perry, P.E., SEBC—SENH-UNH Liaison

    Page 6 GRANITE COLUMNS

The UNH Spring 2012 Career & Internship Fair will be held on Tuesday March 6th. I will be representing SENH at the fair to chat, encourage, listen, and mentor the students. This year the fair, which is from noon to 4 in the Memorial Un-ion Building, is the same day as the SENH meeting that is also being held at UNH. I STRONGLY encourage one or more of you to join me for this chance to interact one-on-one with the students. I also usually get to have enlightening conversations with the firms that are there to do the hiring of the students and a profes-sor or two will often stop by. There is a ton of positive energy in the room. If you know of any positions that you are looking to fill with energetic recent grads or summer interns, please let me know in advance so that I can share that information with the students. Otherwise, I will gather the students’ resumes so that they can be shared with interested SENH members at a later date. I can be reached at [email protected] or 603-647-8700 x 232 .

Updates from UNH, by Anabelle Allen, President, UNH ASCE Steel Bridge Team Regional Competition March 31st at UMass Amherst As time runs down and the regional competition is getting closer, the UNH Steel Bridge Team is really feeling the heat. They are well into the fabrication of the bridge, learning how to weld, and spending long days in the shop trying to meet their fabrication dead-line set for the end of the month. They have dedi-cated many hours to the design and are now fabricat-ing the various elements the bridge. The five seniors are working towards their Senior Project require-ments, while at the same time they are involving the underclassmen on the team. This is important so that next year’s team will have the skills and knowledge to fabricate their bridge when it comes time for them. A UNH Steel Bridge Team Fundraiser will be held on Tuesday, February 21 at Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s Flatbread Company located at 138 Congress Street. A portion of the restaurant's proceeds for the night are being donated to the Steel Bridge team. This event offers a unique opportunity to learn about the University’s prestigious civil engineering program as well as the exciting competition in which it participates each year. While benefiting from the sale of Flatbread’s delicious and aromatic flatbread pizza and organic salads, the fundraiser also includes a raffle for items such as J. Cole concert tickets, UNH hockey tickets, candy baskets, and a variety of other prizes. We would like to invite the SENH members to join us for the evening’s food and comradery. If you cannot join us, you can still help the UNH Steel Bridge Team by donating tickets, gift certificates, items or services for the raffle. You can donate up until the morning of the event. Please contact me, Anabelle at [email protected], with any questions or dona-tions.

Updates from UNH, continued from Page 6 Concrete Canoe Regional Competition UNH hosting this year’s regional conference April 20th and 21st This spring UNH is hosting the 2012 New England Regional Concrete Canoe Conference the weekend of April 20-21. The board members of the UNH chapter of ASCE have been hard at work since September planning this event. Schools from around New England will congregate at UNH the afternoon of Friday, April 20th for presentations on campus. On the morning of the 21st almost 200 students will gather at Ayer’s Lake Campground in Barrington, NH for the day of races. We have 6 generous fellows that have volunteered to judge the competition for us. We’re hoping that winter will not come late this year and we will have great weather and plenty of paddling depth for the canoe teams. After the fun filled races, the teams will come back to the UNH campus for dinner and a short awards ceremony and a speaker from ASCE. We’re striving to have a smooth and exhilarating competition that will be both enjoyable for the teams and a great experience for UNH.
