Rivenstar’s 1st Annual Day
of Dance—Exceptional! Leonie Leduc was the driving force behind this won-
derful day and many are in her
debt for her efforts. The First
Annual Day of Dance was
held on Saturday, October
25th at Stewart Center Room
302 at Purdue University.
From the success of this first
one, we know there will be
more to follow. Everyone was
saddened to hear that Her Maj-
esty was under the weather
and unable to attend. Still, the
dancing went on. The site
opened at 9:00 AM with the
first class beginning at 9:30. Rivenstar’s own Ama-
lie began the instruction with Korobushka, Road to
the Isles and Female Sailor. This was followed by
Master Godfrey teaching Hit and Misse, Cuckolds
All a Row and Glory of the West. Master Philip lead
the Italian dances with Bizzarria d’Amore and Con-
trapasso in Due. Leonie then taught her own chore-
ography of The Rivenstar. Finally Sionnain taught
Marie’s Wedding and Posties Jig. After a dinner
break which seemed to
involve many seeking out
Greek food. (Due to Pur-
due’s Homecoming, most
restaurants were very busy
but not the Parthenon.
According to Gallien, ―we
fixed that.‖) Maybe next
year Rivenstar should just
plan a Greek feast! Fi-
nally the day ended in a
ball putting to the test all
that was learned through the day. (see page 6)

received On October 6th, Wal-
nut Elementary School
hosted Logoda Ele-
mentary School so that
both schools could en-
joy and benefit from a
wonderful Renais-
sance Faire. Several SCA members helped bring the
Middle Ages alive for these kindergarten through sixth
graders. Though difficult to attend because it was a
Monday afternoon,
Marilynde of the
Rocks, demonstrated
calligraphy. She’d ob-
tained the names of the
students beforehand
and had each one done

as they came to her pa-

Business Meeting Notes: In interest of space
only officer highlights will be noted, though officers may have been pre-
sent with no news to report.
Monday, September 29, 2008 Gallien presiding
Event Reports: Everyone who went anywhere
this weekend, went to the Feast of the Hunter’s
Moon, though the student org. went as a group.
Officer Reports: Dance—We did it! (i.e. danced
on Sunday) And we have an event coming up!
Will need a cash box and exchange of paperwork.
Madrigals—experimenting with some new ar-
rangements
Chatelaine—Crawfordsville demo, Rocky, Pieter
and Nan are going. Pieter plans to demo armor.
Baron’s Announcement—Christmas Court is
coming. Please send local award recommenda-
tions to Wulf, Takaya or Janusz.
Herald—Report due in 2 days. If you’ve won any
awards this quarter let Janusz know. Viktor got
an award according to the Herald’s website.
Also, new people, get yourselves a name by
Christmas Court or the Baron may name you!
Student Org.—Look for an upcoming student org.
fundraiser.
A&S—nut much this week, report due end of
next month. Look for upcoming educational
seminars in Ohio. Gallien is planning a mead ma-
ing class next month.
Chronicler—The new issue of RivenSTAR is
here. Take one. Send more stuff—the plea con-
tinues.
Marshal—practice as usual 8—10 at Armory.
Archery still happens but equestrian is done for
the year.
Current Topics: Upcoming events are Christ-
mas Court slated for 12/6. For Spring event—
Takaya still contacting Cary Camp. Gallien is
checking with Ross Camp to see if later April is
available there. Best option for turnout is first
and last weekends in April.
Some discussion occurred on possible animals:
turkey (late period), bear (Russian), Raven
(literary & Viking possibilities), Stork, Cod, ―A
white fish to be named later‖, Catfish (deep fried
from ―southern‖ France, or with Okra from Af-
rica)
Reminder—Fischer’s Renn. Faire is next week-
end Oct. 5th and 6th. Also WLHS demo set for
2nd Fri in Nov.
Monday, October 6, 2008
Leonie reports: We’re Royal!
Event Reports: Sigulf and Guilianna attended Ren-
dezvous at the Bridge. Not as big as last year but
good turnout. Sigulf and Guilianna both taught
classes. Good classes were to be had and the A&S
prizes were exceptional. There was a bardic circle af-
ter feast. Ask Sigulf about Kriegsturm being ―Just a
bunch of Boy Scouts‖
Crawfordsville Demo report: About noon, 2 full con-
tact jousters from Canada were there (had just come
from Fischers’s Renn. Faire) and it was pretty good!
Each demo had it’s own pavilion. Rocky did calligra-
phy. She’d gotten the names of the students before-
hand and had all their names calliged and ready for
them. Nan & Pieter did the armor demo for K, 4, 5,
6th graders. JP was there with ballista. Marcherite
did the mortality demo. Very nice set up. See article
for more details.
Janusz did 6 shows a day drumming for belly dancers
at Fischer’s so he didn’t see too much except the fire-
eater they were next to. The Sternfeld demo was
great, they had wonderful armor. It may be increased
to 2 weekends next year.
Officer Reports: Seneschal—Gallien has Christmas
Court paperwork in hand for Dec. 6th at Cary Camp.
Exchequer—will write check for the Camp this wknd.
Chatelaine—Lunch time demo at WLHS coming up
Nov. 14th. No fighting, mostly talking.
Chirurgeon—everyone is still alive
Student Org.—nothing new
A&S—regional A&S reporting dates have changed
and no one knew. Working on getting report in.
Herald—Report in on time last week. Get award rec-
ommendations in for our royal visit on 10/25 ASAP
Chronicler—send stuff to Marian
Marshal—Authorization cards. Uber cards expire at
the end of the year. New ones are available now.
Next Tues is Sternfeld throw-down.
Current Topics: Day of Dance is Oct. 25th. Her
Majesty is planning to attend so get your award rec-
ommendations in right away just in case she is plan-
ning to hold court. We have a Royalty Room planned
and are providing her with food. Fealty swearing may
occur as well. Purdue’s Homecoming game is at noon
so lunch should be good as in all venues would not be
too crowded. There will be no fighting at this event.
Spring Event: Cary Camp is open for April 4 or 11.
The RivenSTAR Monthly Volume 6, Issue 5 October 2008
Page 4
Ross camp is open for April 11. April 12 is Easter
and April 4th is Grey Gargoyles, Stone Dog Inn. It
is not good to overlap a Chicago event so we voted
for April 11th. Cary Camp rate sheet indicated that
we can rent the entire camp for less than Ross
Camp. Motion carried on the vote, Cary Camp it is.
Now, what animal????
Baron’s Note: Baron Moonwulf’s annual Hallow-
een Pun Party will be at his house on Friday, Oct.
31 after 7:30. Anyone arriving before 7 will be
shot.
Monday, October 13, 2008 Gallien presiding
Event Reports: Takaya reports that she, Nan and
Pieter visited Shattered Crystal and went to the
Crystal Shamfron equestrian event. Takaya helped
Althea to Marshal and did four beginner authoriza-
tions. Pieter came in 1st and Takaya was runner up.
(Side note—they saw the Largest Ketchup Bottle in
the world, the Brook’s Ketchup Bottle while on the
trip.) Wulf, Gallien and Francoise went to Day at
the Mill in Cutler, IN. About 52 people attended
the awesome, gorgeous site; an 1858 mill restored
and made into a museum with an eclectic collection
of tool, a Conestoga Wagon and a Prairie Schooner.
Wulf said he was surprised at how many of the
tools were also laying around his own house. There
were about a half doz. heavy fighters and the same
in rapier. They also had a Kick-butt lunch for $3;
brats and herbed potatoes. The site was free for
Steren Codha to use. There were rental cabins
(really cute ones with cedar shakes and plank sid-
ing) and camping available. As much fighting and
fencing as anyone cared to do. Gnats were pretty
bad but not as bad as at Cary Camp demo a couple
of weeks back. It was just a great kind of a day.
Amalie, Briana, Corwin and Leonie went to
Mynydd Seren’s Odyssey. There were a number of
games based on the epic such as Suitors of Pene-
lope (bare-chested tourney) Cyclop’s tourney for
rapier, and a contest slicing pumpkins and coconuts
after which only 4 stitches were needed by one
lucky soul. Amalie broke a blade right at the hilt.
The Lotus Eaters was a three person melee style
game. Briana and Amalie helped out by being Si-
rens for Siren’s Song ( but the songs were on the
Order of ―Row, Row, Row Your Boat‖ and ―Rose,
Rose‖. It was very well attended and all who went had
a lot of fun. Also, according to Amalie, Feast was
amazing (Cybil was cooking) and the dancing was great.
Officer Reports: A&S—Craft’s person Faire coming
up next week and at 12th Night. Get your projects
ready.
Gallien’s mead making class is coming this weekend.
Herald—Get in award recommendations. Right now no
court has been planned for Day of Dance. Sternfeld
throw-down in tomorrow if anyone wants to join in.
Student Org.—Someone from the Red Hat Society con-
tacted Amalie. Red Hats and Purple Chaps is interested
to know if we have any equestrian events coming up.
Marshal—practice as usual
Current Topics: Day of Dance is October 25th. No
refreshment table at the moment. The event may be
small but seems to be growing quickly as word is
spreading at various events this weekend.
Demo at West Lafayette HS on Friday Nov. 14th from
11:30—1:30.
Christmas Court will be at Cary Camp. We have the
site starting at Noon on Dec. 6th.
Monday, October 20, 2008 Gallien presiding
Event Reports: Crown Tourney was this weekend.
Prince EikBrandr won the tourney. There was also a
mead making class at Gallien’s house. This included a
trip to Great Fermentations in Indy and resulted in start-
ing two, three gal. batches of sack or sweet mead.
Officer Reports: Herald—Janusz laments, ―No one
ever gets awards!‖ Start recommending! Local awards
to be presented at Christmas Court.
Exchequer—about to do quarterly report.
A&S—mead class was enjoyable. Looking forward to
this weekend (Day of Dance)
Chronicler—Pieter sent me a disc of photos from Clown
Tourney—Yea! Someone gave me something!
Knight’s Marshal—Auth cards.—get them renewed
with the Clerk of the Roster
Student Org.—Will Gold Key be at the event? Arrange
with Rocky.
Current Topics: Day of Dance. We now have a corpo-
rate sponsor for beverages. Thanks to Gallien who ar-
ranged for Coca-Cola to donate 24 cases of juices.
Please bring coolers and ice to cool down the beverages.
The RivenSTAR Monthly Volume 6, Issue 5 October 2008
Page 5
Chatelaine—Loaner garb went out and was greatly
appreciated for Day of Dance. Don’t for get WLHS
demo Nov 14th 11:30—1:30. It is mainly A&S ori-
ented because it is in a classroom. No fighting.
Chatelaine’s report is due at the end of this week.
Student Org. Nine people in 2 cars are planning to go
to Crystal Ball. They are not getting a Purdue vehicle
because it is too costly. Gallien said his van may be
available if everything checks out.
Exchequer = $66 for Barony from DOD. Records
were excellently kept by Troll volunteers. Quarter
day report is done. Sunday the books were audited;
they passed.
Current Topics: Pun Halloween Party—Fri night at
Wulf’s. Bring snack of choice or just yourself. Wulf
will supply soft drinks & small amt. of other bever-
ages. Arrive after 7PM. There will be pun costume
judging.
Christmas Court—Will be at Cary Camp on Dec. 6th
beginning at noon. The check was sent but Gallien
hasn’t received confirmation yet. Tracy said the
check was cashed (confirmation enough). Still need
to find out if a torch open flame is ok for a bead mak-
ing class.
Spring Event—Will be at Cary Camp. More possible
animals suggested: otter, beaver (Pieter still has one
in his pond that he would be happy for us to use!),
bear (Russian), peacock (French), serpent, duck, tur-
tle (Pieter also has those—snapping ones!), Kraken
(seafaring, Mediterranean, Norse) and Tiger (Eastern
Kingdom’s totem, Indian, Far East). Vote next week.
Pieter and Nan showed us the thank you notes from
the Crawfordsville demo.
Also something to think about—at DOD a bug was
put in Gallien’s ear about a possible Constellation
Regional Newbies A&S. Thinking classes in the
morning and demos in the afternoon. Classes such as
intro to calligraphy, intro to madrigal singing, dance
101, how to make a quick T-tunic etc. Looking at the
3rd or 4th week of Sept. Have to check so it doesn’t
coincide with Feast of Hunter’s Moon. Suggestion to
present activities that can be followed up on, i.e. ac-
tivities that are part of our more usual affairs then
later present the unique things as demos in the after-
noon. Other suggested classes were Welcome to the
SCA, terminology, Funny Hats 101 and Heraldry.
Suggested that we have a dry run on a Sat. afternoon
in Jan. (31st?) utilizing a couple of rooms in STEW.
Does anyone have a 2 wheeled dolly that could be
used to transport the beverages into Stewart Center?
We’ll check with Sigulf, maybe the Library has one
we could use. Leonie will pick up the stuff for Troll
on Wed at fighter practice. Her Majesty is planning
to come on Saturday morning. No Court is planned,
she just wants to have some fun. The Royal Room
is Stew 204. We need a guard and Pieter volun-
teered. Wulf will bring the sound system at 9 AM
and a microphone with an on/off switch. Leonie
will bring the CD player. The first class starts at
9:30 AM. Wulf will bring banners and banner
stands. Anyone else who has anything festive and
appropriate, feel free to bring it. It might be nice to
put together a little basket for Her Majesty. Also,
we should have a bin for empty plastic bottle recy-
cling. Someone needs to bring Sharpies for writing
names on bottles. The site token is a bell on a string.
Another upcoming demo: WLHS demo on 11/14
Side note: Tippecanoe County voted that as of Nov.
1st, the Fairgrounds can be a wet site in some build-
ings which can be rented for $325.
Monday, October 27, 2008 Leonie presides
Event Reports: We had an Event! Rivenstar’s
First Annual Day of Dance was a success. Three
people from the WLHS club attended as did some
Reamers in Kilts who heard Scotland the Brave be-
ing played. There was an excellent showing from
the student organization and the Barony. A profit of
$66 was made! Many out of towners want it to stay
an annual event. Found out toward the end that
there was an option of mood lighting—could have
done the ―high school dance thing‖ It was a very
successful event with lots of help for clean-up and
set-up. Next year we have to not have it on home-
coming weekend though. Maybe next year we
should just announce that feast will be Greek! All
the restaurants in Chancy Hill were pretty busy at
dinner except the Parthenon. It was empty. We
fixed that!
We are planning to send a thank-you scroll to our
sponsor Coca– Cola.
Officer Reports: Herald—get in local award rec-
ommendations before Christmas Court.
Chronicler—Next issue will be out next week. Send
in stories and pictures.

arms and armor.
They had students
try on mail and ex-
plained about the
―original arms race‖
when better arms
begat better armor
which begat better arms. Lady Marcharite presented
the mortality demo. Jean Paul Pierrepont had a bal-
lista to demonstrate. About noon, two full contact
jousters arrived fresh from the Fischer’s Renn. Faire.
Teachers and crafts-persons helped to fill out the
ranks. As a thank you, the SCA members were all
given a commemorative T-shirt and a gift certificate
for Applebee’s Restaurants. A few days later, a
whole sheaf of thank you notes arrived at Pieter’s
door with drawings and notes of things that the chil-
dren learned.

Gallien Presented a Mead
Making Class October 15th It all started when Gallien got a line on some thin
honey for a good price. What to do with 54 pounds of
honey? Mead of course! And he was nice enough to
teach Olwen, Sigulf, Gwen, Marian and Kat about
making it too. The day started with some instruction in
the basics of fermentation. Next, everyone piled into
Gallien’s van for a field trip to Great Fermentations in
Indy which sells everything for wine, beer and of
course mead making. After a quick detour to Burger
King, they drove back to Lafayette where they pro-
ceeded to wash & sterilize the equipment then heat the
water, add the honey and yeast then start the fermenta-
tion process. A sweet or sack mead was decided on
and two batches made. Each batch was done a little
differently with notations to see if adding the extra
honey at the beginning or during the process makes a
difference. Last report from Gallien was that both
batches were burbling nicely.

Greetings Unto the Barony of Rivenstar from Master Philip White!
I wanted to send thanks for hosting such a wonderful event and my regards to Lady Leonie for having spear-
headed the idea in the first place. It was a great plan to start with and much fun in execution. It was great to
meet so many dancers and I really enjoyed teaching.
I’ve been telling everyone I can how much fun it was. I hope you are already making plans to hold the event
next year. Please pass on my thanks to the populace. The group’s effort to help host us was more than gener-
ous. Events like this only help grow the dance community.
Hopefully, I will be able to bring even more people down along with me next time.
Your Servant to Command,
~p.w.
