When conditions areright, wintertime walkscan be exhilarating. How-ever, snowy sidewalksand icy streets can turn asafe stroll into a danger-ous activity. Many in-juries result from falls onslippery surfaces, warnsDiane Ward, RN of theHerkimer County PublicHealth.
During and after asnowstorm, residentsshould keep their stepsand walkways as free ofsnow as possible to keepthem from becoming ice-covered. If sidewalks be-come dangerous, or ifthere are no sidewalks, pedestrians may beforced to walk in thestreet.
Walking in the streetmay present its own haz-ards. Road surfaces maymake it hard for mo-torists to stop at trafficsignals or to slow down.Snow-covered signs andlandmarks may also dis-tract drivers. When thishappens, pedestrians areat risk of getting hit by amotor vehicle.
“Older adults should beespecially careful whilewalking outside in thewinter. An older person’srisk for falls increases ifhe or she has dementia, impaired vision or im-paired hearing,” she said.
Falls are more likely forpeople who have limitedflexibility and coordina-tion, as well as adversereactions to some medi-cines. Falls are a leadingcause of traumatic braininjuries, and among olderadults falls are the lead-ing cause of injurydeaths.
This winter, followthese safe-walking tips:
• Wear shoes or bootswith non-slip soles. Also, wear reflective or bright-colored clothing, such asa hat or scarf, so mo-torists are better able tosee you.
• Follow all traffic signsand signals.
• If you have to walk inthe street, face traffic andstay as close to the curbas possible.
• Before you step off thecurb, make sure any on-coming vehicles havecome to a complete stop.
• Be aware of your sur-roundings. A covered
patch of ice or a potholefilled with snow maycause a slip or fall.
• Bend your knees a lit-tle and take slower stepsto limit your chances offalling. Wear gloves toavoid putting your handsin your pockets. Avoidcarrying heavy packagesthat may affect your bal-ance and block your view.
• If you are pushing achild in a stroller in theroad, put the stroller in
front of you and as closeto the curb as possible.Dress children in reflec-tive or bright-coloredclothes.
• Hats or scarves thatcover your ears can alsodistort or eliminate themuffled sounds of ap-proaching vehicles. Keepwarm, but make surethat you can hear what’sgoing on around you.

Perhaps I am naive, but until lastweek, I had always assumed that oppo-sition to animal abuse ranked right upthere with issues like the love of “moth-erhood” and “apple pie.” Judging by thefailure of our Montgomery County Leg-islators at their most recent meeting topass a simple law designed to addressthis issue, I am apparently incorrect. Icannot tell you how gravely disappoint-ed I was with several other friends whoattended that meeting and who are alsoconcerned with this problem.
Our legislators need to know thatthere are many folks all the way fromAmsterdam to St. Johnsville who areanimal lovers, and who strongly favorthe passage of tough legislation to theanimal abuse that currently exists.
I hope that many of these folks willtake the time to let our County Legisla-tors know that we need this bill passedwithout futher delay so that MontgomeryCounty can be a leader in this matter.
Very truly yours,William S. McMillan, Canajoharie, NY

I quickly carriedit into a stall in our barn.Taking off my warmscarf, I began to rubbriskly and thoroughly allover it. After doing thisfor a bit, I wrapped the
scarf around it, left it inthe stall, and went to getmy mother.
“There’s a black lambdown at the barn!” I said.“Can you come quickly?”
Soon my mother camewith an armful of rags. She wrapped the lamb inthem, and rubbed it re-peatedly, while I lookedout of the stall to seewhere the mother sheep
was. She was standing inthe barn, paying no at-tention to what we weredoing. She was complete-ly ignoring the lamb. Badsheep! I thought. Youshould’ve taken care ofyour lamb!
After a while, the rub-bing produced a little“maa!” from the lamb. What relief we felt onhearing that. It would be
okay. We took it up to ourgarage, and tried to feedit a bottle of warmedmilk. It didn’t really wantto suck at first, but thenafter a bit, it drank a lit-tle, and then finally fin-ished up the small bottle.
By this time, it wasdark outside. “I wonder ifthe sheep is going to haveanother lamb?” wonderedmy mother. “Often they
have twins.”So, my father and
mother went down to thebarn to check, and sureenough, the sheep washaving another lamb — awhite one this time. Shejust left it in a cornerhowever, and didn’t evenbother to lick it off, so mymother got the rags, andrubbed it, trying to get itdry.
This lamb didn’t seemto be as hardy as theblack one though. It justsat shaking, in my moth-er’s lap. So my motherbrought it up to thehouse, put some ragsdown on the oven door, and laid it there.
After drinking a smallbottle of milk, the lambseemed to have warmedup, so my mother took itback down to the barnand laid it in a bed of softstraw with the otherlamb. Thankfully, thenext day was warmer.Unfortunately, Daisy, themother, still did not wanther lambs at all.
The year before, weraised two orphan lambsthat someone gave us. Weneeded to buy specialsheep-milk powder forthem, which was prettyexpensive. But this timethe sheep has milk, wefigured, even if she hasrejected her lambs, sowhy can’t we “help” herdo her motherly duty, and save some money inthe process?
So it came about thatday after day one of uswould hold the sheep, feeding it sheep feed, while two others helpedthe lambs drink eagerly. The mother sheep did notlike this at all. She did notwant to be a mother. Shewould kick, and nip, andlunge at the lambs if shewas not fed small bites ofdelicious sheep feed con-stantly. But she did lookforward to getting the feedwhenever it was lamb-feeding time. As thelambs grew older and be-gan to discover how tastygrass was, and didn’tneed as much milk, shegradually seemed to getused to her two big lambsdrinking greedily off ofher. This was rather sur-prising, and nice.
The white lamb was aram, so we called himRammy. After about sixmonths, when he beganto show ram characteris-tics, such as sneaking upbehind my brother andtrying to knock him over,we sold him. Since theblack lamb had whitesmudges on its face, wenamed it Oreo. We werepleased that it was a ewethat we could keep tohelp increase our flock.
A few years from now,Oreo will most likely havesome lambs of her own.We hope that she willraise and care for themherself, as a mothersheep should do.

WhatchamacallitsOur Whatchamacallit for this week — al-
though it resembles an old-fashioned bug or garden sprayer — is in fact an old hand held sausage stuffer. This one seems to have been either home made or made to order by a local craftsman. The plunger or piston is a beauti-fully turned solid piece of maple or other hard wood and the galvanized sleeve was obviously made to fi t. It comes with 2 sizes of stuffi ng tubes, also galvanized.
Today there are specialized machines for sau-sage making / stuffi ng that do everything from grinding the meat to fi lling the casings in practi-cally one motion, but ‘back in the day’ each step required different tools and the stuffi ng proce-dure was at least a two-man job. The length of casing was scrunched up over the tube with the other end of it tied off. One person had to operate the plunger with a steady pressure as the other one gently pulled the casing off of the tube as it fi lled. I have included an illustration of a modern manual stuffer so we can see the general concept has not changed much!

According to the popu-lar website ThePeopleHis-tory.com, the averageprice for a new car in1986 was $9,255. Whilefigures for 2016 have yetto be determined, in Sep-tember 2015, the auto-motive resource KelleyBlue Book(www.kbb.com) reportedthat the average transac-tion price for light vehi-cles in August 2015 was$33,543. Those figuresshould raise eyebrowsamong consumers, as
they illustrate just howmuch more expensivenew cars have becomeover the last threedecades.
The U.S. Bureau of La-bor Statistics ConsumerPrice Index inflation cal-culator indicates that$9,255 in 1986 had thesame buying power as$20,041.47 in 2015, leav-ing consumers in 2015well short of the neces-sary funds needed to pur-chase new vehicles. Ifnew vehicle buyers in1986 were faced withsimilar average car costsas buyers in 2015 faced, they would have needed$15,489.91 to drive anew car home from thedealership.

Cat’s 9 LivesDear Paw’s Corner: I’m extremely curious
about the average lifes-pan of cats. Years agomy husband found astray kitten about sixweeks old. “Skeezix”lived to be 26 years olduntil he passed away onenight after two strokes. We also rescued a straywe named “Sheba,” andwe had her for 25 years(the vet couldn’t believeshe’d lived so long), soshe was at least 26 or 27when congestive heartfailure took her. My tworemaining cats, “Mama”and “Baby,” are about 16and 19 years old, respec-tively.
We’ve never done any-thing special in terms ofcare and feeding. Theyall have been spayed orneutered, gotten regularveterinary care and livedindoors exclusively. Ifeed them Dad’s dry catfood, split a can of wetfood between them occa-sionally, and of course afew Whiskas treats everyday. Is it normal for catsto have such longevity?— Fay, via email
Dear Fay: Those areamazingly long-livedcats! The average lifespan of a commonhousecat is about 15years, so it’s safe to saythat all of your cats havemade it well past thatmark.
Is there a magic for-
mula to help your catslive longer? No one hasthat, but there are somethings that will improvea cat’s life over the longterm, and you have doneall of them. Regular vetcare, keeping cats in-doors (away from manydangers and stressors),routine feeding and, ofcourse, lots of TLC canall contribute to long life.
So, who is the oldestcat ever documented? That would be CremePuff, a cat in Austin,Texas, who made theGuinness Book of WorldRecords in 2005 at thespry age of 38!

(BPT) — New technolo-gies are responsible for
many of the advances, comforts and conven-iences of modern life, from the smartphone towearable items such as“smart” wristwatches andeyeglasses. That’s no dif-ferent in the car, wherenew technology is helpingpeople drive more safely.
While cars today may
not look much differentfrom previous modelyears, the latest technolo-gy is helping save lives. One in five injury crashescould be prevented or re-duced if all passenger ve-hicles were equipped withspecific types of technolo-gy, according to a studyfrom the Insurance Insti-
tute for Highway Safety.Enhancing
vehicle safety In the past, safety fea-
tures were geared towardprotecting drivers andpassengers during acrash. Now, newer vehicletechnologies have the po-tential to prevent a colli-sion altogether. Many arealready on the market, including:
• Blind-spot warningsystems warn drivers ofobjects in blind spots, es-pecially while changinglanes and parking.
• Back-up cameraswarn of objects behindthe vehicle to help driversjudge distances and re-verse more safely.
• Smart headlights ad-just the range and inten-sity of light based on thedistance of traffic and toreduce glare and improvenight vision.
• Collision avoidancesystems alert the driverwhen the vehicle may bein danger of a collision.
• Lane departure warn-ings monitor the vehicle’sposition and warn thedriver if the vehicle devi-ates outside the lane.
• Parking assistance in-dicates distance to ob-jects, making parking
easier, or may enable ve-hicles to park on theirown.
• Adaptive cruise con-trol allows the car to ad-just its speed dependingon traffic conditions.
“As these technologiesbecome more widelyavailable in new cars to-day, it’s important alldrivers learn how theywork and how to usethem effectively,” saysJodi Olshevski, gerontol-ogist and executive direc-tor of The Hartford Centerfor Mature Market Excel-lence. “This is especiallytrue for mature drivers,as many technologies canenhance the driving expe-rience as we age.”
Top technologiesamong mature driversDrivers ages 50 to 69,
according to a new studyfrom The Hartford andthe MIT AgeLab, are mostwilling to adopt the fol-lowing vehicle technolo-gies: 1) blind-spot warn-ing systems, 2) back-upcameras, 3) smart head-lights, 4) collision avoid-ance systems, and 5) lanedeparture warnings.
A majority of partici-pants indicated they arewilling to purchase thesefive technologies, are like-
ly to use them, and thinkthey are worth having.
These technologies canhelp keep drivers safeand feeling confident be-hind the wheel. For ex-ample, back-up camerascan help drivers with re-duced flexibility to see be-hind the vehicle, andblind-spot warning sys-tems may help driverswith limited range of mo-tion be more comfortablewhile driving.
The importance oflearning about vehicle
technologyLearning more about
how vehicle technologieswork is a smart step tokeeping drivers safer onthe road. Many new carsalready include somesafety technologies, andall new cars will be re-quired to have back-upcameras by May 2018.
Staying current on thelatest features available— and using them appro-priately — may help alldrivers, including maturedrivers, stay safe behindthe wheel. To learn more, drivers can download afree vehicle technologyguidebook and take aninteractive video quiz atthehartford.com/cartech
