A NEWRED PASSION

A magnificent combination of pure, rich colour and high level of clarity is pushing Mozambique rubies to the top of the

shopping list of jewellers and gem connoisseurs all over the world. These magnificent jewels are often found paired with top quality diamonds, and even then, the lively sparkle and irresistible charm of the Mozambique ruby steal the show away. The ruby mines in Mozambique produce roughs of larger sizes than anywhere else in the world, making it possible to create outstanding jewellery pieces masterpieces with magnificent rubies fit for royals.

WHEN RARE BECOMES EVEN MORE ELUSIVEThis obsession with rubies is a tale as old as time. Rubies have since time in memoriam commanded the highest prices for any coloured gem, even more than diamonds. Tales of old say that the owner of a fine ruby was assured of a life of peace and abundance, so it is no wonder that people have been searching the earth far and wide for the finest rubies.

The famous Mogok mines, known to produce the most beautiful rubies in the world, have been low on output for

many years now. Exceptional untreated rubies from this region over five carats are becoming extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replace and now command astronomical prices per carat. Even rubies from other parts of Burma are becoming beyond attainable for casual gem collectors. The spiralling sky-high prices of all Burma rubies are largely due to a trade embargo of Burma rubies placed by the US and EU several years ago. Today, many fine, untreated Burma rubies are off the market, kept in personal collections of rare gem aficionados. The shortage of such rubies has intensified the demand for top quality rubies, thanks to the desire to own what now appears to be unreachable and almost forbidden.

In 2012, Sotheby’s in Geneva saw a 7.66ct vivid red, unheated Burmese ruby with outstanding purity and attractive cutting style sell for USD$1.17mil, more than 50% above its highest pre-sale estimate. The same month, a world auction price for a ruby per carat was set at a Christies’ auction where a 6.04ct Burmese ruby achieved a price of $551,000 per carat, i.e. a total sale price of $3.33mil.

TRIVIA Rutile is a naturally occurring mineral with the highest refractive indices known of any mineral and also exhibits high dispersion of light.

produce bigger roughs. This makes it possible for people to own rubies weighing 8 to 10 carats, which would otherwise be almost unseen in the market. With such a stunning appearance, it is no wonder that Mozambique rubies are the talk of town. The best of Mozambique rubies that are pure and untreated are starting to command high premiums in the market. However, many good quality stones remain affordable – some even less than half of what a Burma ruby of similar colour and clarity would cost now. This makes Mozambique rubies extremely good value for connoisseurs looking for beautiful red rubies to add to their collection, or to present as a gift to a beloved. The lush red of rubies, after all, has always been epitomised as a symbol of passion and strength. While the prices in many gems have remained stable for most of 2013, some industry reports suggest that prices for Mozambique rubies are climbing much faster now than other rubies. Gemfields PLC, a leading rare gemstone producer who currently controls the production of Mozambique rubies, is expected to hold its first auction later this year, which will definitely affect the prices of Mozambique rubies and the only way it will go is up.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIRWith supply depleting, prices soaring and trade embargos placed on these crimson treasures, people started to look elsewhere hoping to find a replacement for these fine rubies.

Rubies have been found on the African continent for a long time, notably Winza in Tanzania which has been a steady producer of high quality rubies for many years. Demand for top quality Winza rubies rose steadily as gem traders and buyers sought alternatives for Burma rubies. Industry experts feared that with the increased demand, the supply in Winza, too, would not be able to meet the demands of the market.

Thankfully, a new deposit of outstanding rubies was discovered in Niassa in northern Mozambique in 2008, supplying the market with new natural, beautiful rubies. Previously, Niassa was only known for low grade rubies which required extensive treatment to improve the rubies’ appearance, so this discovery immediately caught the attention of gemmological institutes and laboratories worldwide. Many specimens were taken in and various studies on a large sample concurred that a sizeable portion of Mozambique rubies had superior clarity and intense, opulent colour. Mozambique rubies quickly became synonymous with a richly saturated homogenous red colour combined with an exceptional degree of transparency, making them remarkably beautiful and extremely captivating. Some of specimens were even found to rival the legendary Burmese pigeon-blood red rubies, making them instant prized jewels. Some of the most stunningly beautiful rubies owe their lively appearance to rutile silk deposits found naturally within. Many Mozambique rubies have shown this trait, making them very appealing.

Another reason why Mozambique rubies are currently in the spotlight now is because the mines in Mozambique

A CELEBRATION OF PASSIONDeGem recently launched a celebration collection of amazing fine jewellery using top grade Mozambique rubies. Every piece of Mozambique ruby featured in this collection is natural and certified to be free of any treatment or enhancement. The collection is inspired by the Mozambique ruby’s warm outward glow and an intense fire within, a reflection of a woman’s outward grace and inner strength. Every piece in the collection has colours that stands out bold and strong, and designs which are elegant and sensual.

The stunning necklace featured on the cover is one-of-a-kind creation by DeGem. Nineteen uniquely cut Mozambique rubies hang from a tapestry of fancy-cut white diamonds. The necklace, which comes with a matching pair of earrings, is a dream come true for the red carpet. The breathtaking treasure on page 4 is a rare, unheated 10 carat Mozambique ruby which has physical properties so similar to the celebrated pigeon-blood reds – a deep crimson red which symbolizes the strongest of emotions. DeGem has crowned this red marvel with heart shaped diamonds, and stacked the band of the ring with baguette diamonds.

SELECTING A RED JEWEL FOR KEEPSWhen shopping for ruby, one of the most important things to look out for is its hue. The colour has to be red, and it has to be even. The second most important thing is the shape or the cut of the ruby. Like diamonds, the cut plays an important role in determining the sparkle and fire from within. A well cut ruby will look alive and give you different tones in different light and angle as you move it. Clarity is also important when judging the beauty of a ruby. All rubies have inclusions and most are acceptable so long as it does not affect the ruby’s brilliance. Because so many rubies in the market are heated, and many treated in some way or another, you can assume that they have been enhanced if there is no accompanying certificate from a recognized gemological laboratory confirming otherwise.

Page 7: VOLUME 7 A NEW RED PASSION - DeGem Diamond€¦ · rubies and sapphires a pleasing light-scattering effect and a velvety appearance. These effects are found in highly prized pigeon-blood

Rubies and sapphires have been in the spotlight commanding some of the highest prices for coloured gemstones. There is a reason why these natural, untreated corundum are so expensive – they are extremely rare.

There may be many beautiful rubies and sapphires in the market but it is estimated that today, over 95% of them are not naturally beautiful and owe their beauty to some form of enhancement. For those that are not enhanced or not treated, you will see distinctive appliques in jewellery showcases informing buyers that these particular groups of rubies or sapphires are unheated or are completely natural.

Naturally, rubies and sapphires possess a stunning velvety look due to the microscopic particles of rutile needles also known as ‘silk’ which causes a very pleasing light-scattering effect. Some even exhibit some fluorescence giving them a warm inner glow, making them bewitchingly desirable. With hardness second only to diamond, gemstones from the corundum family are durable and can be worn frequently on jewellery items. With these superlative physical qualities, it is no wonder that rubies and sapphires remain the well-loved of coloured gems.

FINE, NATURAL SPLENDOUR

Continuing on a series on gem enhancements and treatments, DeGem shares about some of the common treatments applied to corundum and

why untreated gems have the best value.

DEJEWEL

WHAT IS

12 JUNE 2013

MOTHER NATURE’S GIFTWhen corundum is formed deep within the earth, it is formed with contaminants (most commonly rutile). The heat within the earth as the mineral is pyroclasted to the surface purifies the minerals, giving them better clarity and making them more attractive. Interestingly, it is the slight trace of these rutile needles or ‘silk’ which gives some rubies and sapphires a pleasing light-scattering effect and a velvety appearance. These effects are found in highly prized pigeon-blood rubies and corn-flower blue sapphires.

However, when these minerals are pyroclasted too rapidly to the surface, the corundum is left with too many inclusions causing the gemstone to look cloudy and unattractive.

ENHANCED RUBIES AND SAPPHIRES Naturally, demand was so much greater for the more beautiful corundum that lapidaries eventually developed a heating technique that could be applied to the less beautiful gemstone to rid them of these silk veils and greatly improve its clarity and brilliance. Using a heating process, the unattractive corundum is placed into an environment with extreme temperatures, reducing the

rutile needles within the gem. Heating quickly became a commercially acceptable practise as it was considered to ‘finish off what nature started’. It remains the most widely used and accepted practise in the industry up till now as no chemicals are added and it is a stable and permanent alteration to the gem’s appearance.

Although acceptable, gemstones that have been heat treated are deemed to have been altered from their natural state and are not as highly valued as their non-treated or unheated counterparts, which are prized for their rarity and natural, absolute beauty.

There is another process called lattice or chemical diffusion often carried out on sapphires. The sapphire is put through multiple heating in the presence of artificially introduced elements such as beryllium or titanium. The multiple heatings force the foreign elements to penetrate the structure of the sapphire and produce yellow to orange sapphires and sometimes even bright ‘padparadscha’ colours. The acceptability of this kind of treatment to sapphires is debatable. Jewellers selling these lattice diffused sapphires should do so with full disclosure, but because many may not, it is recommended that buyers request for a certificate from a recognised laboratory (e.g. SSEF, Gubelin, GIA or GRS), or other statement of authenticities from the jeweller.

Apart from heating and diffusion, there are some rubies and sapphires that are dyed or colour coated, this is mostly unacceptable because the enhancement is not permanent.

THE VALUE OF PURITY AND AUTHENTICITY Over the years, the widespread of enhancements has created a multi-tiered gem market. From low grade commercial gemstones to widely accepted heat treated and the completely natural gemstones. With all the types of quality available in the market today, it is essential for consumers to purchase from reputable jewellers that will be able to provide them with professional advice they need.

Despite the affordability of beautiful treated rubies and sapphires, demand for untreated gems grows every year. This seemingly insatiable appetite for pure, natural rubies and sapphires explains their current high prices. Top quality sapphires above 5 carats have been known to command prices up to US$ 500,000 per carat! However aficionados are still willing to pay a premium for their pure beauty because it is these rare, unheated ones that make the most stunning and valuable heirloom pieces.

With advancement in gemmological laboratory equipment, gemstones can now be tested and verified by experienced gemologists to identify whether a stone is completely natural, heated or further treated in any way. Ideally, customers should look into getting gemstones that come certified by reputable laboratories. A certificate should be able to provide consumers with the information they need to know about the gemstone they are purchasing. While enhancing its value, buyers can purchase with confidence and know that the stone they are getting is indeed what they are putting down their money for.

A natural, 15 carat cornflower blue sapphire like this commands premiums because of its velvety blue hue

TRIVIAMost low grade sapphires are mined looking like ‘moldy potatoes’ before they are heated several times to a clearer brighter blue. To mine a sapphire already with an intense blue colour is extremely rare and the gem will be highly prized.

FUN FACT!It is said that the discovery of heating rubies to improve their appearance was purely by chance. A gem dealer had to flee in a rush when his home caught fire. He was devastated, thinking he had lost everything. When he returned home and went through the destruction, he was astonished to find that not only had his collection of poor quality rubies survive the fire, but had greatly in terms of appearance! If this story is true, it is indeed a remarkable accidental discovery.

I f you haven’t already noticed, over the last few years old world charm has become a raging trend. Vintage or retro furniture are being restored and well sought after. New restaurants are being tastefully decorated to exude ambience from a bygone era like the 1920s and 1930s. Fashion seems to have gone a full circle with floral patterns, long flair skirts and puff sleeves have become en vogue again for ladies. But interior decorating and fashion are not the only artistic aspects that seem to turned old into gold – even antique jewelleries are becoming increasingly

popular. DeGem has an impressive suite of beautiful jewelleries from the Edwardian era from centuries ago right up to the Art Deco art revolution. Many of these pieces have been beautifully restored and have assimilated easily into current fashion trends.

PUT OLD WORLD CHARM EN

VOGUERetro seems to have become the new chic and so it is with jewellery as well. DeGem gives

you some tips on choosing and wearing antiquated jewellery, and making it a part of today’s contemporary lifestyle.

EDWARDIAN BROOCHGenuine jewellery from the Edwardian era is very rare as over the hundreds of years, most have been taken apart and refashioned to fit the changing styles of jewellery of successive periods. The few exceptional pieces of this period that have survived intact all show extraordinary craftsmanship and floral motifs are typical of the period, as evident by this unique leaf brooch. The old mine cut diamonds are of irregular and of varying shapes and sizes as most were cut and polished using hand tools. The leaf is made from a combination of silver and gold, and the diamonds weigh over 5 carats. The mid-1800s was a period of opulence and self-indulgence for the wealthy and handcrafted jewellery was donned by both men and women. Today, brooches like this fit exceptionally well on the lapels of coats and jackets, or at the top of a button down shirt for any semi-formal function. Here’s a little secret – this brooch also doubles up as a pendant for ladies who prefer to have low-hanging pendants for plain coloured dresses.

ART DECO BRACELET AND EARRINGS From the most rare, to the most popular – the Art Deco era has left a lasting impression on many aspects of style today, and sometimes it seems like it never went out of fashion in the first place. They remain amongst the most desirable pieces of jewellery and almost every jewellery connoisseur has one as part of her collection. This beautiful diamond bracelet was crafted circa 1910 and bears French assay marks for platinum corresponding to that period. It is set with 242 pieces of old mine cut diamonds with an estimated total weight of 15 carats. Though the earrings, with 42 pieces of old mine cut diamonds, do not bear any assay marks, it can be assumed to be from the same era. The consistency and fine etching of the of the fine mill grain patterns are impressive, considering the limited tools craftsmen had to work with over a hundred years ago. The straight lines and repeat patterns was a stark contrast to the Art Nouveau style jewellery before it which was more fluid and floral. Bracelets and brooches were very popular then as these pieces celebrated women’s freedom and new roles in society. These pieces make a stunning statement at evening and formal affairs. They will surely captivate the beholder and make those around you ‘bling’ with envy!

MODERN VINTAGE The growing popularity of old world charm has lead top jewellers such a DeGem to fashion some of its new pieces to bear resemblance to antique jewellery. This is achieved through familiarity with the charateristics of jewellery from different eras, and then selecting specific attributes which will be enhance the qualities of modern gemstones. DeGem has very artfully enhanced the beauty of this 4.5 carat modern round brilliant diamond by giving it a slightly dated look. The geometrical shape of the frame bears resemblance to styles of the Art Deco era, while the soft patterns within which has an oxidised coating for colour contrast lend a slight Victorian flavour to the piece. The band is given a contemporary finish with the rose gold band. The blend of styles of different eras makes this ring a one-a-kind modern day vintage ring. Rings such as these can be worn all the time – for any occasion!

INFINITY LAUNCHES 2013

COLLECTIONTimeless, enduring symbols of love show off a flair of colours and intricate craft

in the new collection of stunning wedding bands launched by Infinity

16 JUNE 2013

Conventionally, wedding bands were kept simple and understated so they can fit snugly with the diamond engagement ring. More recently, the trend has evolved to make wedding bands a beautiful piece of jewellery by itself. Although still considered secondary to the engagement ring, diamonds on wedding bands have become increasingly popular, as has the desire of having multicoloured gold on the ring.

Apart from being attractive and comfortable, wedding rings also need to be durable as they will be worn every day for a long, long time. High-end jewellers like DeGem have been using the latest technology in jewellery crafting to ensure that every piece of jewellery is not only beautiful, but also sturdy and secure.

Sandy

A year ago, Infinity launched Infinity Timeless – a trend setting range of wedding bands which employs a cutting edge innovation which allows state-of-the-art, seamless joining of gold and platinum. The technique, known as thermal bonding is so delicate and precise that it has been used in high end audio manufacturing for years, and only recently used in jewellery making as the results are extremely fine and precise. Thermal bonding ensures minimal porosity in both the gold and platinum used, increasing durability in the rings.

FOREVERMARK

CREATING A DREAM

DeJewel speaks to Constantino Papadimitriou, Forevermark’s Head of Design and Innovation,

to learn more about the joys of working with beautiful diamonds and what it takes to lead a

team of highly artistic people to create jewellery that speaks to women all over the world.

20 JUNE 2013

Italian jewellery designer Costantino Papadimitriou has had the wanderlust for all his life, spending most of his time travelling, reading, enjoying music and cooking, and almost everything in

which creativity can thrive. This history graduate from Boston University, enjoyed a long and successful career in advertising before leaving to fulfill his passion in jewellery by joining De Beers in 2003. Forevermark’s Design and Innovation team which is based in Milan, consisting of dedicated jewellery artists follow Papadimitriou’s lead to intercept both consumer needs and global trends – to come up with iconic designs which are passionate and powerful and hero the Forevermark diamond. Together, they conceptualized the brand's first ever jewellery collection – the Forevermark Encordia collection – which is represented by the Hercules knot, also known as the love knot, symbolic of an enduring bond between two people. 1. What is the first step in coming up with a ‘big idea’ collection featuring Forevermark diamonds? Our first step is to identify our target audience; we work then on understanding what their deeper needs and desires are. From this point we work on concepts that can best bring to life and satisfy those needs in the form of jewellery that showcases Forevermark diamonds in the most beautiful way.

Page 14: VOLUME 7 A NEW RED PASSION - DeGem Diamond€¦ · rubies and sapphires a pleasing light-scattering effect and a velvety appearance. These effects are found in highly prized pigeon-blood

21 JUNE 2013

2. How many people in your design team work on these ‘big ideas’, and what special skills do they bring to the team? This can vary; at the outset up to six designers can work to the brief. As we narrow down the concepts we usually end up with two or three designers developing the shortlisted ideas. Their skills are not just about good design, they need to be curious, know how to understand the subtleties in the difference between nationalities and cultures, they need to be inquisitive and they need to do a lot of research. They must understand how to translate a concept visually. Most of our designers have learned to do this through working with us. 3. It must be a long process coming up with a ‘big idea’ that appeals to women of all walks of life, all over the world. Where does the team get inspiration from? The initial inspiration will come from the brief that I give them. Then they will explore on their own. During the development process we have a constant dialogue of sharing and discussing ideas and options.

4. Tell is a bit about the design process – how does the idea get drawn out on paper, and then become reality as a piece of jewellery? At the start the ideas are very often a collection of images that the designers pull together, themes, thoughts, patterns, feelings. We discuss the different creative directions, how they can take shape visually and whether they respond to the brief.

5. How long does this whole process take? The process will vary, between the research we do pre and post idea development, prototyping and refinement, this can take anywhere from six months to a year or so. 6. Encordia is Forevermark’s first iconic collection of jewellery. What does this collection mean to you personally? This was exciting, mostly because it was so unexpected. We started the process and really didn’t know what we were going to find. Within three months we had a variety of designers present us their ideas. Then all of a sudden it was there. A Hercules knot, it just made sense. We dropped everything else and started working only on a variety of shapes and designs as well as began to look for the name “Encordia”.

Page 15: VOLUME 7 A NEW RED PASSION - DeGem Diamond€¦ · rubies and sapphires a pleasing light-scattering effect and a velvety appearance. These effects are found in highly prized pigeon-blood

22 JUNE 2013

7. Encordia is a very emotionally rich collection. What three words are best used to describe these emotions? Encordia is about a bond between two people - unwavering, eternal and pure.

8. The Encordia Red Carpet collection has been well received and worn by many famous ladies over the years. Which is your favourite piece? It is very difficult to choose a favourite piece, as each one showcases the ‘love knot’ a symbol of an enduring bond in such a beautiful way building on from the original Encordia design concept. One of them has to be the elegant Encordia diamond cuff worn by Jennifer Garner to the BAFTAs in 2013. 9. Is there any possibility that you will be adding new designs to the collection in the future? We create new pieces according to the various market needs, so recently we have created new pieces for Hong Kong and for Japan. 10.For how long have you been designing jewellery? My first adventures with jewellery started with my grandfather when I was 15. Professionally, I have been designing for nearly a decade. 11. Do you own jewellery of your own, and if yes, tell us a bit about your favourite piece and why is it special to you? This would have to be my Encordia cufflinks. I like the knot in black gold, but mostly because they are my first diamonds. 12. What are your other passions / what do you do in your spare time? Photography – I always have a camera with me. Bookstores, I can get lost for hours, Jazz, visiting museums as well as skiing, cooking, and travelling.

Encordia red carpet designs such as this beautiful bangle have accompanied celebrities on red carpets worldwide. Jennifer Garner most recently wore this at the BAFTA ceremony earlier this year

Earlier this year, DeGem designed and handcrafted two special pieces of jewellery for auction as part of its continuous support for the

Breast Cancer Welfare Society of Malaysia (BCWA). The items were two brooches, each with its own distinctive design, which were fashioned after the pink ribbon, known as the international symbol of breast cancer awareness.

The first of the two is avant garde in design – showing off a unique combination of round diamonds and almost 4 carats of fancy cut pink sapphires. The diamonds are all bezel-set in white gold while the pink beauties are prong-set using rose gold. The other ‘pink ribbon’ owes its outstanding colour to graduating hues of pink sapphire against blackened gold, and edged by white, round brilliant diamonds. The auction of the brooches was held in conjunction with the official re-opening of DeGem’s flagship boutique in Bangsar. The auction successfully raised combined donations totalling RM45,300 for BCWA and its patron, YB Puan Sri Datin Seri Dato’ Sri Akmal Abdul Salam was present to receive the cheque from DeGem at the event.

The same month, a world auction price for a ruby per carat was set at a Christies’ auction where a 6.04ct Burmese ruby achieved a price of $551,000 per carat, i.e. a total sale price of $3.33mil.

produce bigger roughs.

Page 31: VOLUME 7 A NEW RED PASSION - DeGem Diamond€¦ · rubies and sapphires a pleasing light-scattering effect and a velvety appearance.
