Happy New Year! I am beyond excited to serve as Chairwoman
of the Board of Berkeley County’s leading business organization
this year. I feel very privileged to be among the very
distinguished group of those who have served before me.
We predict that 2018 will be another stellar year for our
Chamber! Right off the bat we are introducing two new programs –
News@Noon and Connect Berkeley. Join us on Friday, January 12 for the first
Rise and Shine Breakfast of the year when Chamber President Tina Combs will
share information about the new Chamber programs being launched in 2018,
opportunities to participate on committees, ways to promote your business, and
how to take full advantage of your Chamber membership benefits.
Our Chamber staff and Board of Directors strive to deliver quality programs and
opportunities to help you succeed in your business or organization, and we hope
that you will take advantage of those opportunities. It is important to us that we
continue to provide these programs and services that are beneficial to our
members. We strive to keep our mission at the forefront to facilitate the
economic progress of our members. To make sure we are providing this benefit,
we ask that you give us your feedback throughout the year.
Again, it is an honor to serve as your Chairwoman of the Board this year, and I
look forward to working with each of you. On behalf of the Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors and Staff, we wish you a successful year in 2018!
Chairwoman’s Corner Gail Moxley

the awarding of a $135,000 twelve-month federal
grant to Berkeley County Schools to
administer the program. The MPD Chief, Maury
Richards, says that, “TMI is using the special
connection between police, schools, and families
to build relationships that will prevent drug abuse
and addiction. It’s never been done anywhere
before, but we’ve started it here. The Martinsburg
Initiative will become a prevention model for our
entire country.”
TMI applies the pioneering science of Dr. Vincent
Felitti’s Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood
Experiences (ACE) Study through a neighborhood,
school-based, and community policing strategy
that begins with the family. TMI will continue to
expand community resources and link law
enforcement, schools, communities, and families
in a dynamic partnership that assesses
participants’ ACE scores, links them to necessary
resources and supports, and connects
participating students with positive adult mentors.
The grant will support a full-time Project Director,
Berkeley County Schools Social Worker,
Tiffany Hendershot, and will now be expanded to
include all Elementary and Intermediate schools
within the City of Martinsburg.
Shepherd University will continue conducting
an on-going study to assess results, contributing
volunteer interns to help run the program, and
providing mentors for youth.

helps provide emergency assistance to cancer
patients locally who do not qualify for other
area programs. Some of the immediate needs
covered by the fund include food supplements,
medication and gas cards for transportation to

The Newland Insurance Agency has been proud to serve the greater Martinsburg area for more than 20 years. With a combined total of 90 years’ experience in the insurance industry, Dawn Newland and her team of insurance professionals are uniquely positioned to provide clients with expert, personalized service in a caring and simple manner. State Farm, well known for being a "good neighbor" by "being there" for our customers, was founded in 1922 by retired farmer and insurance salesman George Jacob "G.J." Mecherle. The company now insures more cars and homes than any other insurer in the United States. The company’s corporate mission has always been to be the first and best choice in the products and services it provides. For the third year in a row, State Farm has been selected by the Financial Services Roundtable (FSR) to receive the Corporate Social Responsibility Leadership Award. As a company, it has been consistently recognized as a top employer in the U.S., a leader in the community, and a green partner. For more on the State Farm story, click here: State Farm. Dawn has been associated with State Farm for 27 years and believes her blood is “State Farm red”. “While I never imagined a lifetime career in the insurance industry, I couldn’t imagine it with any other company,” Dawn says as she reflects back to 1990. “Their values line up with mine. ‘Like a Good Neighbor’ is not just a catchphrase to me. Being able to help people understand their policy and coverage, being there through a loss, and giving back to my community is at the core of why this has been such a rewarding career.”
Dawn has been blessed with having gifted team members that are committed to providing remarkable customer service to each and every client. They offer State Farm insurance products with local service -- from Kearneysville to Hedgesville, Falling Waters to Inwood, Shepherdstown to Gerrardstown and all points in between. As long-term residents, they love assisting relocations and local residents alike. The Newland team strives to keep it simple and make sure you have proper coverage, at the best price, all while truly caring about helping to make your life go right. December was Education Day for Leadership Berkeley and it
was a day packed full of tours and presentations from many of
the education resources in the community. The day started
with a fabulous breakfast prepared by the students at James
Rumsey Technical Institute. After breakfast, Leadership
Berkeley participants were treated to a tour of the facility and
learned about the many great programs at JRTI. After leaving
James Rumsey the group traveled to North Middle School
where they were served a delicious lunch prepared by the
Family and Consumer Sciences students and enjoyed a musical
performance by the choir. The group also met with the
Berkeley County Business Education Partnership and heard from Berkeley County
Schools Superintendent Manny Arvon. The afternoon was busy with tours of Valley College,
Shepherd University Martinsburg Center, and Blue Ridge Community and Technical
College. Leadership Berkeley will travel to Charleston on January 21-23 to learn about state
government.
