1867 CENSUS OF MADISON COUNTY, FLORIDA
From a really wonderful book written by Ann Lainhart, States Censuses, we found
that the State of Florida ordered a census done in Madison County in 1867. These
records were transcribed from original records at Florida State Archives. In 2001
Elmer Spear had the Archives microfilm this census and this record was compiled
from that microfilm. The microfilm copy is located at Elmer’s Genealogy Library,
203 South Range Street, Madison, Florida.
Proofread by Sandra Norris.
The 1867 census will be printed in its original order, white inhabitants of Madison
County followed by black inhabitants. The census page is listed as the census was
recorded.

History of Sirmans
The land where Sirmans now stands was first owned by Mr. Coker*. Later Mr. Burl Bailey bought
the farm from him. In 1873 Mr. J. D. Sirmans came down from Georgia and bought the farm, which
was still in his possession when the town was built. The town was named in his honor. Some of the
earlier settlers were: Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Sirmans, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Mathis, Mr. and Mrs. M.
Chason, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Reams, Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Goodman, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Edwards, Mr. and
Mrs. John Day, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Vann, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Day, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Vann, and Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Vann.
The town began with the building of a railroad by the South Georgia Railroad Company in about
1902. Mr. Sirmans gave the right of way across his land, and the owners of the railroad promised him
that they would build a depot on the east side of the track when they crossed the St. Augustine
Road which runs by Mr. A. L. Campbell’s store. There were four passenger trains, two freight trains,
and four log trains daily. The railroad extended from Adel, Georgia to Hampton Springs in Taylor
County. Mr. George Smith was the first agent, followed by A. W. Edwards and G. I. English. The
depot is still standing in the center of Sirmans.
After the building of the railroad several stores were built. Mr. J. D. Sirmans built the first store,
which is now used as a barn by W. G. Clements. Then Mr. R. C. Reams built a store, handling a small
line of merchandise. He was assisted by his brother, Calvin Reams. His business increased as the
town grew, and he continued in business until his health failed, during which time he enjoyed a
profitable business. This business is continued by W. G. Clements. Mr. W. L. Cruce and Mr. Sam
Jenkins operated a meat market. Soon afterwards Mr. Sam Henderson opened and operated one, and
following Mr. Hamp Hampton established one. The first drug store was established by Mr. J. P. Day
and operated by Andrew Brannen, and later Mr. D. E. Bailey took charge of the business.
Several other businesses were begun as the town grew. Those operating a garage were Cary
Pinson, W. G. Clements, M. T. Chason and T. B. Powell. Russell Vann is now in charge of the business.
At one time the garage owners enjoyed a good business, there being quite a bit of hauling done in the
logging, turpentine, and saw milling industries.
Barber shops have been operated by Mr. B. L. Bailey, Mr. W. A. Slaughter, and Mr. Wilbur Vann.
The two latter are now living in Sirmans. Others who operated stores in Sirmans were Nealy
Campbell, W. A. Williams, and Andrew Silver.
A cotton gin was established in 1907 by Mr. Sam Henderson of Monticello. It is said that this was
at the time the largest cotton gin in Madison County. It was a very promising business and operated
for several years. Following the cotton gin Mr. J. B. Mazingo established a grist mill. There were at
this time two large saw mills in operation. Sirmans was once an active shipping point for naval stores,
there being six turpentine stills within a range of six miles from town. Mr. D. C. Hudson now operates
one in the edge of Sirmans.
Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Goodman operated the first boarding house. He built one of the first homes in
Sirmans. Later he sold the home to Mrs. Julia Cruce who continued the boarding house for several
years and still owns the house. The boarding house accommodated all salesmen, agents, and
transients brought in by trains, or in other ways, to transact business in the town. As people often
had to stop over night, a good business was realized.
The Ebb Supply Company was composed of John A. Campbell, Sam Vann, and W. L. Vann. This store
was a two-story building, and carried everything from groceries to furniture. In the building there
was a drug store and a barber shop. This was a promising business for years. Albert L. Campbell now

operates the business of J. A. Campbell and Son, which is a successor to Ebb Supply Company.
There occurred in about 1914 a very destructive fire on the east side of the railroad. There were
at this time twelve stores in Sirmans. The six on the east side were destroyed, but two were rebuilt.
One of the two that was rebuilt was used as a dwelling house, and is now the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Cox. The other store being used as a store by Mr. W. G. Clements.
There have been five doctors to practice in Sirmans; namely Dr. E. L. Williams, Dr. Henry Knight,
Dr. Ollie Phillips, Dr. B. F. Hamrick and Dr. Ernest Kinsey.
There have been several graded roads leading into Sirmans. There is a graded road, the old St.
Augustine Road, that leads east to Madison by Moseley Hall and west to Lamont on Road Nineteen, a
paved road, only twelve miles away. The other road serving Sirmans is a hard surfaced road built
about 1932 extending from Greenville to the Taylor County line.
The Missionary Baptist Church in the western part of Sirmans and the Methodist Church in the
southern part of Sirmans were built in 1910. In 1936 the independent Baptist Church was built west
of the railroad.
About 1900, Mr. Edd Mazingo operated a small post-office called Rosebud, which was discontinued
after Sirmans was settled. Mr. A. W. Edwards was the first postmaster. Other postmasters have
been Mr. John Campbell, Johnnie Stephens, Mr. W. M. Goodman, Mr. W. G. Clements, and Mr. T. B.
Powell. The latter is still in charge of the post office. The name of the post office had to be
changed because there was a small place in Taylor County named Simmons. This caused confusion in
delivery of the mail. It was finally decided to call the post office Ebb, the name by which it is still
known, but the town and school are called Sirmans. There has been only one rural mail route whose
carriers were Russell Patterson and Emmet Sanders. This service was discontinued in 1924. Since
then rural mail delivery is handled through the Greenville Post office, first by Mr. George Laney, then
by Mr. R. A. Scott.
The first school house was a small log house built before Sirmans was settled near where the
Independent Baptist Church now stands. It was called the Mathis School because it was built on Mr.
H. M. Mathis’ place. The term was short and uncertain. Some of the teachers at this school were
Miss Olive Chappman, Miss Eluira Calhoun, and Mr. Calvin McLean. Later a wooden structure was built
near Mrs. Lou Fulford’s home. This house was moved to its present location where Mrs. Maud Cruce
operates a store. There was still only one teacher. As Sirmans was becoming a small town, the school
adopted the name of Sirmans. Mr. W. C. Bailey was one of the teachers in this building being
employed in 1910.
A new building was erected in 1915, where the present building now stands. The town had grown to
the extent that two teachers were needed. So the new building was built with two rooms. The
Woodmen of the World appropriated money for the building of a large room upstairs which was used
for their meetings and as an auditorium for the school programs. The Woodsmen finally disbanded,
and the school grew to a three-teacher school. The upstairs was used as a classroom. Later the
Cruce School and Pleasant Hill consolidated with Sirmans, making it necessary for the upstairs to be
curtained off for two classrooms. In 1924 Moseley Hall and Central Academy consolidated with
Sirmans.
When the two-story building was erected, a teacherage with five rooms was built near the school
house because it had been found difficult for teachers to find a house. Mr. J. D. Jarman and wife
were among the teachers who resided in it. This was the only teacherage ever built in Madison
County. The teacherage was torn down when the present school building was built. In 1936 the
present building, a modern structure, with four classrooms, a library, office and auditorium, was
erected through a WPA appropriation.

Slashes and dashes,
what do they mean to genealogists?
As you’re reading a genealogist report, you see one person’s birth listed as 1730/31, while another person’s birth is listed as 1730-31. What’s the difference?
Slashes and dashes mean very different things to genealogists. You’ll want to be sure to use them properly when you communicate with other genealogists. Here’s a quick guide to keeping your slashes and dashes in line.
Dash: A dash give a time frame in which the event is presumed to have happened. If you know from other evidence that your ancestor Sally Southwick was born in 1730 or 1731, but don’t know for sure which year is the correct one, write her birth date as 1730-1731.
Slash: A slash indicates a double date, a date which may have been written in either of two forms. Between the years 1582 and 1752, two different calendar systems were in use in England and the United States. The old Julian calendar started its year on 25 March. The new Gregorian calendar started its year on 1 January.
This means that double-dating is necessary from 1 January to 24 March each year during this period. (No double dating is necessary from 25 March to 31 December, however. During these months, the years would have been the same.) So, if you see in a published genealogy that Moses Makepeace was born 11 January 1730/31, you’ll know that the genealogist is recording the exact date of birth. The double dates result from the clash of calendars.

Miss Susie McCall returned Saturday from Quitman. She is now making preparations to resume
her studies at Wesleyan Female College, and will go to Macon about the fifteenth. George Davis and Joe Hinely left early Monday morning for Kenton¹s fishery on the Gulf coast,
where they will spend the next week or ten days enjoying life as it only can be enjoyed on the coast.
W. Preston Thompson left Tuesday morning for the furniture markets to buy stock for the Pope
Furniture Co. He will visit Atlanta, High Point, Franklin and other places where furniture is manufactured.
Wallie Beasley left Sunday for Hopkinsville, KY, where he will resume his studies at the South
Kentucky Military Institute. He was accompanied as far as Valdosta by his father and Tom Leslie, who spent the day in that city.
Mr. B. P. Moseley and family expect to leave early next week for Douglas, GA, where they will
make their permanent home. OFF TO CANADA
About two years ago Messrs. Jack W. Lee and family of the southern part of this county, and J. O. Chance and family of Taylor county, embraced the religion of the Mormans. Last Monday the two families left this city on a special car bound for Lethbridge, western Canada where they will join a recently organized colony of the "Latter Day Saints." The whole number of souls is sixteen being Mr. Lee, his wife, and 9 children, Mr. Chance, his wife, mother and two daughters. A special car was provided by the railroad companies, being what is known as an emigrant car. The party will reach its destination about Saturday night. The railroad fare for the entire party amounted to something like $750.
EDITOR¹S NOTE: After reading this I felt it was a shame that the eleven members of the Lee
family were not mentioned by name. Sandra then pulled the 1900 Federal Census for Madison County and we found this family. They were: individual relationship birth age birthplace Jack W. LEE head October 1851 48 Florida Minnie LEE wife March 1871 29 Florida Owen LEE son September 1879 20 Florida Cora LEE daughter August 1881 18 Florida

September 11, 1902 ER SUICIDE TOLD HIS NAME, THEN DIED
Well Dressed Man who Swallowed Acid in Central Park had Probably Been Ill - Evidently from the South
After swallowing carbolic acid in Central Park (New York City, New York) a well dressed young man was revived sufficiently to say that he was R. Lawrence Parramore, twenty-five years old, and that he lived at the residence of a Mrs. Russell at No. 232 West Twenty-First street. Among the papers in his pocket was found a mileage book on the Seaboard Air line issued at Madison, Florida.
The foregoing, clipped from the New York Evening World of last Saturday, tells the story of the
death of R. Wallace Parramore, oldest son of Mrs. Imogene Parramore, and brother of Messrs. Will and Phil Parramore, of this city.
In the Spring of the year Wallace was the victim of an accident which occurred aboard a train out
in Nebraska. For days he lingered between life and death, but by careful nursing and a surgical operation he was restored to fairly good health. In this accident his skull was fractured at the base of the brain. His brother, Will, went to Nebraska and brought him home where he received every attention, which a loving mother and affectionate friends could bestow. About a month since he left home again, going to Saratoga from which place a letter was received from him a few days ago.
Mr. T. J. Beggs, who is in New York, identified the body as that of Wallace. The casket
containing his remains reached here yesterday by express from New York and was interred in the family plot in the cemetery.
