Reporter: Jane K. Currie
Bob McDougall gave a touch-
ing invocation.
Ian Williams called for guests.
Ed Borisenko introduced visiting
Rotarian Barry Sparkes, Assistant
District Governor, Lantzville Club;
Mikel Knutsson introduced
Donna Mercier, Chamber of Com-
merce. Wahid Ali reported that
Yvan Gosselin was recovering
from a trip to Emergency.
President Joan’s Newfound-
land question was to name the two
little islands in the Gulf of St. Law-
rence and
their nation-
ality. Jane
Currie knew they
were St.
Pierre et
Miquelon,
belonging
to France and won the coveted
bookmark
Announcements
John Heisterman asked for vol-
unteers for
the Dec.
19 Bay-
view
Christmas
Lunch.
Keith
McFarlane asked for RSVP’s for
the Family Santa Breakfast, Dec. 9.
He is also selling tickets for the
Dec. 21st Christmas dinner, at $75/
couple, or $37.50 per person.
The Sergeant-at-Arms, Bob
Fenty, then chastised & fined Jane
Currie (COGS committee) for get-
ting her Bobs mixed up in the last
COGS bulletin. Bob HOFF-
STROM’s firm, not Bob WIL-
SON’s, was the Bob that scooped
Al Herold’s milk money.
Bob Hoffstrom then chirped in
a so-happy buck that he was not
Bob Wilson!
Mike Herold reported that only
“Bobs” won the recent Grey Cup
football pool:
Bob Fenty,
Bob Patrick,
Bob Bu-
chanan (it
might have
been Janeane
Coutu) and
Bob McDou-
gall, was the
winner of the
grand prize of
$150. The
club gained $250 from this fund-
raiser.
Bob Buchanan then reported
that proceeds from the Dragon Boat
Festival benefited many local medi-
cal and community groups, and that
Lynne Pankratz would be greatly
missed as Treasurer, having com-
pleted her term. Jane Currie, who
once again was taking meeting
notes, is now in great fear of being
fined again, after this complex
plethora of Bob-ly activity.
President Joan Ryan was look-
ing forward to a craft fair in
Nanaimo, at which her husband
Bruce was to be the head chef.
Lynne
Pank-
ratz was
proud
that all
seven
local
candi-
dates
passed
their CA
exams.
Douglas Anderson was happy it
was St. Andrew’s Day and to be
heading off for a week of skiing at
Whistler.
Frank Shoemaker, Brent
Stetar, Wahid Ali and Dave
Hammond then courageously took
turns standing for bids for Movem-
ber shaving, an effort that quickly
raised over $1K, despite John
Heisterman having forgotten to
bring his machete. Dave H. did
bring a snappy electric shaver and
the deed was done with no spilled
blood or pulled nose-hairs. Frank
Shoemaker shared a bit of Movem-
ber history: since being created by
two Australian mates in 2003 to
raise funds for prostate cancer re-
search, Movember has grown inter-
nationally to raise more than $100
million/year!
President Joan Ryan won the
ticket for the card draw, but did not
connect with the Ace of Spades.
Club Assembly
The programme today was a
Club “Assembly”; an opportunity
for members to hear what the
Board has been doing and to pro-
vide feedback and discussion.
Assistant Governor Barry
Sparkes reminded us all of the
wonders to be
experienced at
the Rotary In-
ternational
Convention in
Lisbon, June
2013. For
those attending
from our District 5020, DG Judy
Byron plans to host a social event –
please let Barry know. The video
for the Lisbon Convention was
shown.
Janeane Coutu gave a Notice
of Motion to adopt the new Consti-
tution and Bylaws as previously
circulated and posted on the web-
site. The documents substantially
Bob McDougall
Lynn Pankratz
follow the current RI standard tem-
plates with several additions, in-
cluding;
1. The Board spending author-
ity limit of $500 has been
retained; except for adminis-
trative expenditures, any lar-
ger amount requires mem-
bership approval.
2. The duties of the secretary
will be expanded to include
filing the annual reports and
accounts with the Province.
This is because we are a so-
ciety, registered in BC.
Some discussion followed and
members who wanted further infor-
mation were directed to the Club
website www.rotarynanaimo.org.
Note: You must sign in to see the
category Club Documents. This
will be voted at the AGM Dec. 14.
Douglas recommended that we
delete “sergeant at arms” from
Constitution Article 10, section 4
since it is not our practice to have
this position represented directly at
the Board level.
Chris Pogson spoke on Mem-
bership Committee activities, plan-
ning for Fireside meetings and the
importance of Participation. He
has copies of the New Member
packages from RI that include lots
of information; copies are available
for recent members.
Chris also reported on the acti-
vates and
plans of the
Fellowship
Committee,
and particu-
larly noted
the upcoming
Santa Break-
fast and our
Christmas
Dinner on Friday 21st
Douglas gave a presentation on
the importance of Participation
over Atten-
dance. The
Board policy to
award make-up
for Participa-
tion has now
been included
in the new
Constitution
and Bylaws. Attendance at a mini-
mum of 50% meetings in each 6-
months is a commitment each of us
made when we joined. The obliga-
tion is for members to inform the
Secretary of any Participation to
which they are entitled. Members
should check their own attendance
records through Clubrunner and
identify any make-up credits due.
Bob Janes pointed out that the da-
tabase will only accept entries for
the current and previous months –
don’t delay.
John Shillabeer reported on the
activities of his several Administra-
tive committees:
Bruce Gordon and Janeane
prepared the
Roster data in
good time; Egon
has the cashier
roster filled to
the end of the
year; Dave Hammond has the ser-
geants at arms in line, and is ad-
dressing the issue of members re-
spect for others; Basil has his pro-
gramme committee organised, and
has dealt well with some recent
challenges.
Attendance figures for the first
18 weeks of the year to 19th No-
vember show that 30% of our
members had less than 50% atten-
dance, and 11% had perfect atten-
dance. Participation is most impor-
tant.

Rotarian Action Group expands maternal health project in Nigeria
Excerpt from article by Vanessa N. Glavinskas, Rotary International News
In Nigeria, one out of every 18 women dies as a result of childbirth. The country has the second-highest maternal mortality rate in the world.
That’s why the Rotarian Action Group for Population Growth and Sustainable Develop-ment targeted the northern Nigerian states of Kaduna and Kano with a pilot program aimed at reducing maternal mortality by preventing and treating obstetric fistula, a seri-ous birth injury. From 2005 until 2010, the project, partly supported by a grant from The Rotary Foundation, reduced maternal death by 60 percent in participating hospitals, reached 1 million women of childbearing age, and repaired obstetric fistulas for 1,500 Nigerian women.
“We have to empower women, and women cannot be empowered if they can’t make their own choices in antenatal care and child spacing,” says Dr. Robert Zinser, CEO of the Rotarian Action Group for Population Growth and Sustainable Development and member of the Rotary Club of Ludwigshafen-Rheinschanze, Germany.
Zinser has been to Nigeria nearly 20 times to work on maternal and child health pro-jects, including the northern Nigeria pilot focused on the prevention and treatment of fistulas. An obstetric fistula is a birth injury that can cause stillbirth and, in the mother, chronic incontinence, infection, nerve damage, or death. The primary cause is labor that goes on for too long, often for days. Because 70 percent of Nigerian women deliver at home, often without access to proper medical care, long labors that would be prevented in the developed world are more common.
The action group is now preparing to replicate the project in the states of Abuja and Onoda, with plans to eventually establish the model in other central and southern Nige-ria states.
