May at a Glance

May is the month of our SPRING TEA. We are all working hard to make this BIG event a success, but especially the coordi-nators: Barbara Wright—planning the food, Becky Williams and Janice Dominguez—gathering donations and making raffle bas-kets, and Patty Big-gerstaff—coordinating the fashion show. Thanks to them and all their FRIENDS work-ing with them.

May 12 is the day we honor our mothers. My mother was born on a farm in Oklaho-ma, and never finished high school. She left

the farm at age 16, and traveled by train (alone) to Washington, D.C. to join her sister who had come 2 years before. Mom worked hard to make a loving home for us, and she taught us by example to work hard for what we wanted. One of my favorite memories is the image of the beau-tiful bouquet of beard-ed irises on the dining room table which she grew in our yard!

May is also NATION-AL MILITARY AP-PRECIATION MONTH. Every day we are grateful to ser-vice men and women, but we have chosen Memorial Day to give

them special recogni-tion.

May is GIFTS FROM THE GARDEN MONTH. Now is the time to start growing your plants so that they will be lush in time for the Plant Sale in Sep-tember.

The Gardens were created and designed by Florence Bixby with the

Olmstead brothers to create a series of “outdoor rooms” around the

hill in the 1920’s and ’30’s. Florence’s tranquil gardens grew and

have been restored to reflect her vision.

It was so nice to see Donna Hawk, arm in a sling, at

our April General Meeting. So great to have her there.

Rosario Mauritz is back to her amazing walking self

after knee surgery. And Rosa Ana is making good

progress in her recent knee surgery recovery as well.

It’s so wonderful to hear the good news about our

members. Keep up the good work ladies.
