Executive Administrator’s Corner

Like a lazy river, Father Time rolls on. I do not know if he is old or young, for his age has no

end. I only know we get just a smidgeon so it makes him old to me.

To all of time there are seasons and ages for understanding. Mankind has gone through the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We seemed stuck for a while in the Middle Ages but are now comfortably in the technological age. Although our knowledge is rapidly increasing, such increase, like time, will never end. Forever

is something that can never be discovered. Just about everything else can be.What is really amazing to me is that even the most astounding discoveries of

the past 100 years (Jet Age, Atomic Age and Computer Age) don’t seem nearly as complicated now. They were just discoveries for a time that was purposed. Ultimately, such knowledge becomes absorbed into the science base as we move on toward newer and newer revelations.

Today, as a human race, we have gone to the moon and back and are saturated with conveniences of life. Someday, we may even venture outside of our galaxy. Yet, despite what we have done or will do, some things remain constant in our lives. Solomon said it best:

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.” (Ecclesiates 3:1-8)

What you do and learn in your smidgeon of time is up to you. Yet, along your way, I hope you find what makes your life better. Some simple things worth discovering may include:

• That you are an important person in the universe• That values are your most important possession• That selflessness should trump selfishness• That knowledge does not always equate with understanding• That even geniuses have more questions than answers• That you belong to this universe and not vice versa I pray in all that you do that you find true happiness and joy!Sincerely, Don

Welcome New ResidentsWILLIAM (BILL) AND HELEN GILLESPIE

William (Bill) and Helen Gillespie come to Spanish Cove with a

blended family of 5 married daughters, 15 grandchildren and

30 great grandchildren. One of the granddaughters, Tonya Ratcliff, is

executive director of the fostering community, Pepper’s Ranch in Guthrie

and she and her husband have 10 of those 30 great grandchildren.

Bill was born in Berea, Ohio and came to Oklahoma by way of Los

Angelinos, California and Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from

Oklahoma City University with a degree in Law Enforcement and served with

the Oklahoma City Police Department until 1976. After retiring from the

Department, he was store manager for Trice Electronics. After Trice closed he

went to work for The Daily Oklahoman. He was their Chief of Security when he

retired once again in 2000.

Helen, a Methodist preacher’s kid, was born in Cheyenne, Oklahoma and lived

all her life in many Oklahoma towns. She graduated from East Central University

with a BS degree. After moving to Oklahoma City in 1969 she worked at Stretch and

Sew Fabrics, Heritage House Smorgasbord as bookkeeper and retired from The Daily

Oklahoman as Administrative Assistant to the Promotions Director in 2000.

After retiring Bill and Helen spent their time with many volunteer services –

one day a week working with Christmas Connection/Sharing Tree, cooking, and

delivering Mobile Meals once a month. Bill has been driving 2 or 3 days a week for

Provide-a-Ride taking people to doctor appointments with RSVP. They have also

volunteered with the Memorial Marathon each April at packet pick up where runners

from all over the world come to pick up their documents. In January they have assisted

with the Special Olympics Bowling Tournaments where the participants qualify for

State, National and International Tournaments. In the spring they have volunteered

at the Metro Library Receiving Center helping package materials for the library’s

summer reading program. In between there have been lots of birthday parties, dance

recitals, various kinds of ball games and school programs.

Their other interests include square dancing, reading, gardening, working out

in the gym and traveling. They both look forward to coming to Spanish Cove and

participating in all the activities. We are very excited to welcome Bill and Helen

Gillespie as our new residents. Welcome to Spanish Cove, Bill and Helen!

Life The Way You Want It

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month which gives us the opportunity to shine a purple light on Alzheimer’s and focus on brain awareness activities. The brain is the most

complex organ in the human body and there is much to learn about how it works. We know that brain health is impacted by many factors, such as diet, exercise, mental stimulation and socialization. The latest research indicates that genes do not determine the fate of our brains. Our lifestyle is key to determining how our brain grows. Physical exercise and increased fitness promotes brain functioning through a variety of mechanisms, such as increased brain volume, blood supply and more. Cardiovascular exercise seems to bring the greatest brain benefits. Mental stimulation strengthens the connections between neurons (synapses), improving neuron survival and cognitive functioning which helps your brain better cope with normal aging. Playing bridge, learning a foreign language, taking a class and trying something new are all good for the brain. The Mediterranean Diet, supplemented with olive oil and nuts, is associated with decreased risk of cognitive decline. Many scientists now believe that social interaction is key to maintaining good mental health. The American Journal of Public Health recently published a study in which researchers reported that older women who maintained large social networks reduced their risk of dementia and delayed or prevented cognitive impairment. Social networks seem to facilitate healthy behaviors, like joining a walking group, exercise class or traveling club. Group exercise is believed to stimulate the formation of brain synapses, enhance blood flow in the brain and increase the formation of nerve cells.

Spanish Cove is hosting a Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research seminar on Monday, June 18, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the Plaza Concourse. The seminar will be presented by Carla Scull, Education Coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter. This seminar will offer research based tips for optimizing your physical and cognitive health as you age.

During the month of June thousands of Americans will turn their Facebook profile purple with an “END ALZ” icon. We are encouraging those who have purple Spanish Cove Crusaders t-shirts to wear them during the month of June and Go purple with a purpose!

QUOTE: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us”--J.R.R. Tolkien

VISION: This quote reminds me that I have the power over how my days are spent. The choice is mine. I see myself standing in front of a big clock, life. I watch as the minute hand ticks away, the things I choose to do in life. Can you hear it? Go for a walk, take a day trip, go shopping, paint a picture, write a poem, go for a swim, help someone in need. Tick, tick, tick.

INSPIRATION: How will you spend those ticking moments? Will you sit and watch as they go by? Or will you look back wondering, “How did the time fly by?” Me, I want to be in wonder of how the time flew by. I do that by choosing to do as much as I can with the time given to me. You see, it is a choice to either sit back and watch the clock tick, or get out and make the most of your time. You determine the adventure throughout the day.

CALENDAR: Every month you are given a calendar of things to make the most of every tick. Let me share some ways to make the most of your days from the June calendar. Go for a walk: “Race Walking” Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Take a day trip: Tulsa Aquarium on Wednesday, June 20th. Go shopping: Outlet Mall on Monday, June 25th. Write a Poem: “Poetry and Tea” on Wednesday, June 13th. Go for a swim: “Water Fun” on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Help someone in need: “Craft Ministry” on Tuesday, June 19th. There is a full calendar of ideas for you to decide to make the most of your time.

CHALLENGE: This month I challenge you to put your calendar next to a clock where you can see it every morning. Across the top, write the quote by Mr. Tolkien and “Tick, Tick, Tick.” Every time you see the calendar it will inspire you to make the most of your time in June.

No matter what age we are, there is no time like the present to decide to make the most out of the time given to us. The power is ours to make each tick count.

Many blessings, Kathleen
