Liz Hannum from NSU and Travis Kiefer, a technology entrepreneur, spoke to the at-
tendees about their startup-focused meetup called StartHub. Their mission is to connect stu-
dents and young entrepreneurs with seasoned businessmen, bankers, lawyers, and other sup-port people new ventures need, cultivating conversations and mentorships.
Included in their longer vision is to create a website that includes crowdsourcing for funds
and input for potential businesses in the vacant local commercial spaces. They hope to eventu-
ally develop a shared workspace environment complete with a venture capital fund. The StartHub forum is very open and typically features speakers from the local business
community. They meet weekly at Slackers at 8pm and people of all ages and backgrounds are
welcome to attend.
Cody Roggatz is the Manager of the Aberdeen Regional Airport
and Rid Line of Aberdeen. He updated the club on the projects that
will be going on at the airport that involve runway construction and
the task of eliminating the wetlands around the runways. A major issue they have at the airport is not only the water levels but also the
wildlife and Varmints that live and feed from those wetland areas.
The wildlife cause damage to the grounds as well as danger to the
aircrafts coming in and out of the Aberdeen airport. While making the airport safer and removing the wetland areas
they are also contributing to enhancing the wetland areas in the wil-
low drive area south of Aberdeen. This way they we are not losing
habit for the wildlife but just moving it to a safer area for the animals as well as making for safer operation of the airport.
The construction and plans are all to bring the airport up to FFA
regulations and though the construction will have a lot of expense to
it only 5% of the cost will be covered by the city of Aberdeen.

Programs, cont. Terri Holmes, of Northern State University spoke to the Sertoma Club on
Wednesday, April, 22, 2015, about the Day of Champions of which she is
the coordinator. It was noted that this is the 13 annual day of champi-
ons. The day of champions includes numerous NSU athletes who go out
into the community and work on projects of various sorts in helping other
groups and organizations with projects for one day within the Aberdeen and
surrounding communities. This event is scheduled this year for Saturday
April 25, 2015 and some of the organizations that will benefit this year in-
clude Aberdeen Community Theatre, Britton/Horton, Inc., United Way,
Whitetail Bowmen Archery Club, Frederick Forward/Westport, Boys and
Girls Club of Aberdeen Area, Pink Ladies Relay for Life Team, SPURS,
TDAF Girl Scout Camp @ Richmond Lake, Aberdeen Family YMCA/
Youth Development Center, Brown County Fair, Safe Harbor, Aspire, New
Beginnings Center/Lutheran Social Services. This is an event where the athletes are giving back to the community for one
day. They work hard on the various project on painting/staining, waxing, vacuum, cleaning, weeding, organize donated items and
costume shop, attach decals, move furniture, set up new mail boxes, spread wood chips and pick up garbage. Terri commented on
how this program started and has progressed through the years. This group is also in coordination with the United Way of NESD
and has various other groups who provide either materials or monetary funding to support the project and in feeding and providing
transportation for the athletes which include United Way of NESD, Twist Cone, Eide Bailly, Northwestern Energy, Ride Line, Aber-
deen Sertoma Club, The Salvation Army, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Pepsi Co, Subway. If you would like more information
as to this limited write up, please let me know. Thanks. Hopefully you received both photo attachments and can pick one of the two
to use-Jackie took the picture.
On April 29, Sertoma’s guest speaker was Kati Bachmayer,
Workforce Development Coordinator for the Aberdeen Devel-
opment Corporation (ADC). Kati has been working at ADC
since February 2015. Her job is to implement Aberdeen’s
Workforce Development Initiative, which is focused on Recruit-
ment, Retention and Training. This cross-sector collaborative
plan materialized after Governor Daugaard and the SD WINS
Cabinet hosted six regional Workforce Summits last year. Ab-
erdeen has been awarded two state grants dedicated to work-
force development and providing additional English as a Second
Language courses in our community. ADC is partnering with
the Chamber, NSU, PC, The Training Place, Cornerstones Ca-
reer Learning Center, the Aberdeen School District and many
others to get the job done. They’re also exchanging ideas with other SD Workforce Development Coordinators – like in Mitchell
and Huron.
Two Workforce Community Forums were held April 6 and 7 on NSU’s campus. At these meetings, ADC provided an update on the
workforce development initiative and had speakers from the Department of Labor, Cornerstones, The Training Place, Small Business
Development Center, NECOG, GROW SD, Lake Area Tech, and Mitchell Tech provide information on how these organizations
could help Aberdeen’s companies. ADC encouraged all those who attended to complete their workforce survey (https://
www.surveymonkey.com/r/GJBD783) in order to learn more about our community’s workforce needs and challenges.
Recruitment efforts include TV, radio, print and social media marketing targeted to surrounding states and locations with high unem-
ployment or underemployment. The goal is to direct job seekers to AberdeenSD.com/jobs to get more information. For retention,
ADC is working to increase college internship participation in our community and is helping to develop a partnership between our
grade schools and our local businesses. Exposing Aberdeen’s high school students to the career opportunities they have right here at
home can help grow our future workforce. As previously mentioned, Aberdeen received a state grant to fund additional English as a
Second Language classes over the next two years. These classes will assist our current immigrant and refugee residents. ADC is
partnering with NSU on this effort and the classes will start in Fall 2015 on NSU’s campus. Training opportunities can be found at
Cornerstones, The Training Place, the SD Division of Rehabilitation Services, and the Governor’s Office of Economic Develop-
ment’s ‘Workforce Development Program.’ Training is a vitally important piece of the workforce puzzle, and ADC will strive to
ensure Aberdeen’s businesses have the resources they need.
