Our President’s MessageHappy 2008! I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays. I
wish everyone a happy, safe, and healthy new year as we begin 2008. Also, by the time you receive this newsletter, I hope you are well on your way to keeping those New Year’s resolutions.
Monday, January 7th, 2008 we held our 1st monthly Board and dinner meetings for calendar year 2008 with Urtha Lenhardt presenting on the Iditarod race/competition. Thank you Urtha for a very informative talk about a subject, that from those of us who attended to hear your presentation, know you are very passionate about.
February’s dinner meeting speaker and topic will be Brian Ranck, P.E., Penn-sylvania Turnpike Commission, and he will be discussing Act 44 and the I-80 Tolling effort. Therefore, please make your February 4th dinner meeting res-ervations early to hear all about this timely and interesting subject since we are expecting quite a large attendance.
Our Program Committee (led by Program Chair Mike Ryan) is doing an excellent job of putting together a great program for future dinner meetings. Please see the 2007-08 Calendar included within this newsletter for more in-formation on the planned speakers, topics, dates, and other upcoming events.

National Engineers Week 2008 - February 17-23, 2008Once again it is time for National Engineers Week, which was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional
Engineers. Its purpose is for the annual celebration of the engineering profession, to commemorate engineers, and to increase the general public’s awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession.
The celebration is held each year during the week of George Washington‘s birthday. President Washington’s agricul-tural, military, engineering, and land surveying skills led to his recognition as our nation’s fi rst engineer. On June 9, 1778, he issued an order calling for engineering education that led to the establishment of West Point, which was the fi rst college of Engineering in the nation. He directed a growing society’s need toward technical advancements, invention, and education.
The Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council (CPEWC) will be leading the week long celebration from February 17 to 23 with many events and activities throughout the greater Harrisburg area. Some of the biggest events include our annual display in the Colonial Park Mall and our annual banquet in recognition of local engineers, to be held Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the West Shore Country Club in Camp Hill. Additional events are planned throughout the month of February, please be sure to check the local newspaper and website for the times and places. This year Jenni Woodworth, P.E., of Pennoni Associates, Inc. and fellow ASHE Harrisburg member will be honored with the Young Engineer of the Year Award.
The CPEWC consists of the professional organizations ABCD, AICHE, ASCE, ASHE, ASHRAE, ASM, ASME, CMAA, ESP, IEEE, IES, IIE, ITSPA, MASITE, PSPE, and WTS, as well as Engineering Consultant fi rms in the greater Harrisburg area, which encompasses Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Perry, Lancaster, Lebanon, and other counties.

Adopt-A-Highway Spring Clean-upSaturday, April 26, 2008
Volunteers of many ages, including youth from several local churches will join hands in recognition of Earth Day by helping the
American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) in its Spring Adopt-A-Highway Clean-up of the I-83 Exit 43 (Front Street) Interchange in Harrisburg.
Interested members are invited to attend a complimentary all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Eat-n-Park restaurant on Limekiln Road in New Cumberland. We will meet promptly at 7:30 a.m. at Eat-n-Park for breakfast, and then re-convene at the Riverfront Comfort Inn parking lot at 8:30 a.m. to begin the clean-up, which will conclude before 10:00 am. Trash bags, work gloves, and safety vests will be provided.
This is a great opportunity to participate in an important community-building activity while helping to keep our highways beautiful!
“Pick It Up PA Days” is an ambitious statewide effort to remove litter and trash from our roadways, parks, forests, riverbanks, neighborhoods, and open spaces.
This event is sponsored by the American Society of Highway Engineers – Harrisburg Section in partnership with the West Shore Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. As a precaution, participants must be at least 10 years of age, and if between 10 and 17 years of age, must be supervised by adults 18 years of age or older; to have viewed a safety video, and to have signed a release form before taking part in this activity.

Volunteers Needed for 2008 National Conference CommitteesThe 2008 ASHE National Conference will mark the 50th anniversary of ASHE. Re-
gion 4, which includes the Harrisburg and Altoona sections, will be responsible for host-ing the event. In order to make the conference a success, Region 4 is currently seeking approximately 50 volunteers to begin the planning process. RE-USE OF YOUR USED CELLULAR PHONE -“Connecting those who serve with those who care”
The US EPA estimates that 150 million used cellular phones will be taken out of service in 2008. In aggregate, that’s bad news, but the good news is that ASHE Harrisburg is taking steps to make sure that our mem-bers’ used phones are not among those that are discarded. Your unwant-ed phone can go to good use instead of being kept unused or being sent to the landfi ll. Not only will this save energy and material resources, but the board has chosen to support an organization that sends the phones with prepaid accounts to American servicemen and servicewomen over-seas. The program is being co-sponsored by PhonesforSoldiers and the VFW, and you can read more details on the program from the website www.phonesforsoldiers.org. PhonesforSoldiers reprograms the used phones we collect, with prepaid minutes donated by VFW’s Operation Uplink, and they give them to chaplains to provide to our troops. It al-lows our service people to keep in touch with their families while they’re deployed overseas or hospitalized.
There will be a drop-off box at upcoming ASHE meetings and events, for your used phone with a good battery (also bring your charger/manual/accessories). ASHE will then take care of mailing the collected phones to the PhonesforSoldiers organization. (Note that you should take the time to erase all of your stored phone numbers – they are not necessarily erased when the phone is reprogrammed.) If you or your coworkers would like to donate money to the VFW’s Operation Uplink, which provides the pre-paid accounts for this effort, visit their website http://www.operationuplink.org/.
Please encourage your non-member friends and coworkers to contribute to these efforts. The fi rst website we’ve provided has simple steps to register to receive mailing labels for you to handle a large mailing directly, or to receive mailing envelopes for single phones.
In the future, we may organize similar collection efforts for other charitable organizations that can provide benefi ts to those in need.
