The fall has been very busy - it is hard to believe how time flies. I am very appreciative for the generosity of University League members. You shared both your time and money, making this a very successful fall. University League is doing good deeds for the University of Wisconsin students and the Madison community at large. Especially notable is your generosity to Wisconsin Bookworms, sponsored by League, where volunteers read to pre-school children monthly and give each child the book. The October 28 Epic Tour was a smashing success. Hats off to Program Chair LaVonne Senn, Luncheon and Epic Coordinator Nancy Meyer, and Bus Leader of Good Cheer Fern Lawrence. The Epic tour leaders were phenomenal, and the 39 participants gave the tour outstanding reviews. The November 10 Nursing School Tour, with 37 attendees, included a delicious lunch served by Union Catering. Who knew that university food could be so good...and gourmet? The tour included the rooms where “sick” mannequins are treated by beginning nursing students. Mary Jo Willis deserves a shout-out for her organization of this event. Yvette Egan, Clinical Assistance Professor, spoke about the Elder Project, which is an opportunity for people (over age 70) to provide help to nursing students. The November 22 Candlelight Dinner Concert drew 158 members and guests. The food was excellent, and the Kat Trio delightful. Honored guests included the Kat Trio, the daughter of Vlad and Victoria who sold their CDs at the door, and Kirsten Larson, the recipient of the Lois and Bob Dick Endowed Scholarship. Kirsten was interviewed in a short pre-dinner program.

A special thank you to Anne Stoelting who made new nametags for all 450 University League members and as well as guests at the Candlelight Dinner Concert. Also these nametags will be used at all League events. The reserved place cards were an added touch at the Candlelight Dinner. I am grateful for the scholarship donations that members made when registering for the Epic Tour, the Nursing School Tour and the Candlelight

Dinner. I am also gratified by all the volunteers who helped with these events. Finally, I was happy to see that so many of our members attended these events and made them a big success. By the time you read this, it will be the New Year. As we look ahead

to 2015, we have two big events to anticipate. One is the Michael Feldman “Whad’Ya Know?” show followed by lunch at the Madison Club March 7. The other is the Annual Meeting and Luncheon at Blackhawk featuring Chancellor Becky Blank May 12. Another Epic Tour will be offered May 19. Our cover page art shows our Stay-at-Home Scholarship Benefit invitation which will bring the circus to your mailbox in February. Look for your opportunity to support University of Wisconsin students through your scholarship donations. Please enjoy the circus and the messages from last year’s scholarship recipients and give generously. Thanks to all of you we’ve had a great 2014 so let us begin 2015 with optimism as we continue our mission while sharing fun and making friends.

Lucas Gutierrez, University League Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Lucas Gutierrez is a recent University League Memorial Scholarship Recipient. A junior majoring in Music Performance-Percussion, he used our funds to travel to Brazil. He stayed at the Copacabana and had a chance to experience Rio de Janeiro and all of its culture. He was able to view the city as a whole from the slums to the beautiful resort hotels. He studied samba while in Brazil. He went with other music majors from UW-Madison. Brazil is known for its samba institutions where one can study samba. He had hours and hours of study with Brazilian musicians. Since Brazil has had the World Cup Soccer

tournament and the Olympics, they are an up and coming culture with lots to offer and to learn from. Jorge Alba, Brazilian Percussion Master, was also in Madison recently. The picture shown in the article is from that recent visit. Lucas is to the right of Jorge (in white).

One day Lucas wants to become a college professor and teach percussion to his students.

Lucas’ grandmother was the first woman graduate of the University of Wisconsin in the 1940s in Hispanic Studies. He grew up in a household with both Spanish and English languages. He has an older brother who just graduated in May 2014 from UW-Oshkosh. He has a younger brother who is also in the UW system.

Lucas is very grateful to University League for this scholarship. He sends his sincere appreciation.

Michael Polich, University League Law School Scholarship Recipient

Michael Polich is a recent recipient of one of three University League scholarships provided to Law School students this semester. Michael has had quite a journey to get to this point. He started out at Wisconsin with a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Storm water treatment and the environmental side of engineering piqued his interest. He was SO interested in this area that he decided to go on to graduate school. He is in the process of finalizing a Master’s degree in Biological Systems Engineering at UW-Madison. Experiences in his undergraduate and graduate career led him to become frustrated with policies, legislation, and bureaucrats in the environmental field, which diverted his path to the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he thought he could potentially have an impact on environ-mental policy. He is now focusing on the policy side of Environmental Law. His engineering background is serving him well while pursuing his law degree.

Michael is the son of David Polich and Barb Polich Endres. He graduated from Middleton High School and has lived in Wisconsin all of his life. Michael is following as a Badger in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. His father received a BA in Urban Geography at Wisconsin, and now runs a landscaping company. His →

grandfather, John Polich, received a MS from Wisconsin and went on to work for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture in marketing, specializing in cash crops. This past summer, Michael worked for the Environmental Protection Agency. He really enjoyed the work as it was both challenging and rewarding.

Michael’s dream job would be to be a policy maker for the state or federal government. At this point, Michael does not have a role model. He has always forged his own path. He admires his parents but said that it doesn’t drive him to replicate their path.

Michael is very appreciative of the University League Scholarship. When he returned to Madison in the fall from his unpaid internship in Washington, DC, he was “down and out” so to speak and had almost maxed out his credit card. This scholarship really helped Michael breathe a sigh of relief! He says a big, “Thank You” to the University League donors. “It has been wonderful to receive this honor.”

Priyanka Panjwani, University League Scholarship Recipient

Priyanka Panjwani is a recent University League Scholarship Recipient. The scholarship she received is a Mrs. William Allen Scholarship. Priyanka is a freshman, majoring in Math and Economics. She grew up in Lombard, Illinois, and has two brothers; the oldest is getting his PhD in Economics at Northwestern University, and the younger is 16 and a junior in high school.

When selecting a college, Priyanka wanted to go to a Big 10 University. She also wanted to stay in the Midwest. She was impressed with the UW Math Department. After visiting the campus and taking a tour, she fell in love with Madison and the UW-Madison Campus.

Priyanka got into math and economics through the influence of her older brother. They are very close. In fact, he assisted her in her college admission. Her dream job would be to get her

PhD in both topics. She wants to be a professor at a major university where she will do research, teach, and keep learning.

One day Priyanka would like to travel and to study abroad; however, she hasn’t had much time for that so far. In her spare time, Priyanka loves music. She plays the piano and also listens to music. In addition, she enjoys reading, both fiction and non-fiction, and particularly development economics.

She particularly is interested in development economics regarding lesser-developed countries and continuing conditions of poverty. Development economics is a special aspect of economics and is very interesting in regard to how education and other factors may help make a poor country more economically viable.

Priyanka is the first in her family to study here at UW-Madison. She was really thrilled to receive this scholarship. Priyanka says that it was a real confidence booster for a freshman to receive such a wonderful honor. She feels that all her hard work in high school has now paid off. Priyanka offers a big Thank You! to the League members. She really appreciates this opportunity and the financial assistance towards her tuition.

Bookworms year started with a bang (actually a bark and a meow) as volunteers read and distributed books titled Bark, George and A

Cat and a Dog. Twenty-nine Bookworms readers will continue to visit preschool classrooms in Dane County, donating books to 378 children and their 25 classrooms, for a total of 3,224 books this year. Through the generosity of University League members, BWBF contributors, and our sponsor organizations, we have once again increased the number of children served by this program. On behalf of the preschool children of Dane County who benefit from Wisconsin Bookworms, thank you to our donors! This program would not exist without the support of our sponsor organizations. We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of our 2014-15 Bookworms donor organizations: The Cremer Foundation, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Sigma State and The University League, Inc.

THANK YOU!

Volunteering for Wisconsin Public Television Fundraiser Linda Harvey, Kathleen Murphy Sherry, Jan Tymorek, Brook Soltvedt, Kay Babcock, Peggy Schmidt, and Kay Jarvis-Sladky worked for the final hours of the current WPT membership drive on Sunday Dec.14. We had a good time. Kathleen said: "This is fun. I’ll do it again." Jan Tymorek said the same. Most of the group are "regulars" who volunteer every time the

League puts out a call for WPT fundraiser participation, and WPT has come to count on us. We raised $13,000 during our shift. Totally, the amount raised with this Member Drive about $750,000! Kay J-S says, “Everyone I talked to pledged over $100. Everyone was nice, and I even talked to a donor who lived on my parents’ street in Menomonie, WI and knew them.”

School of Nursing Volunteers Needed

On page 7 of this newsletter, is a description of the tour the UL took at the new SoN building in November. You will find a note from Yvette Egan that the School is looking for elder volunteers to pair with their students. It seems like a great service opportunity for University League members who may be interested in being part of the education of first-year nursing students. If you are interested in being a volunteer for this project, please contact Yvette Egan at [email protected] or call her cell at 608-330-2626.

University League Tour of Epic Systems Campus

On Tuesday, October 28, thirty-eight University League members toured Epic Systems campus in Verona. Epic is a privately-held health care software company. Their systems are installed in medium to large-sized hospitals throughout the country. The company was founded in 1979 by Judith Faulkner. Epic moved its headquarters to Verona, Wisconsin in 2005. Since then, the campus has continued to expand. There are now over 7,000 people working on campus with plans for over 10,000 people in the next year or two. They hold over 5.6 million patient records in their health care software systems. The newest buildings are under construction and will be built in the “Wizard” theme loosely based on Harry

Potter. According to our guide, the campus is large and takes more than 45 minutes to walk from one end to the other.

The office campus offers individual offices to enhance worker productivity. The buildings are themed, and art is used to foster innovation and creativity. No expense is spared in regard to creating a lovely work environment both inside and out. The grounds are well-landscaped and professionally groomed. Artwork is beautiful inside each building. Much of the artwork has been purchased from local artists at the Art Fair on the Square.

Sustainability is also an important feature of the campus. There are photovoltaic cells over the visitor parking area. In addition, they use wind turbines and geothermal heat as well as support extensive recycling programs. According to our guide, Epic Systems is off of the grid, so to speak. They generate

enough energy to be self-sufficient. The University League group divided into three groups. Our group toured Heaven and Hell, the Dungeons and Dragons building and Miss Kitty’s conference area. One of the newest buildings is the learning center

where there are numerous conference rooms for training new clients in the software. The tours only last one hour. Due to the large size of the campus, it takes several tours to scope out each area. Individual self-guided tours are also available.

Following the Epic tour, we had High Tea at Paoli Schoolhouse Café. We had delicious veggie quiche or chicken salad with coconut cream pie for dessert. We had a wonderful day of fun and fellowship and learned a lot about Epic. A second tour will be offered on May 19, 2015. Look

for more information in an upcoming newsletter

League Tour of the UW School of Nursing

Many of us had a unique opportunity to tour the Signe Skott Cooper Hall (School of Nursing) in November, enjoying visits to the clinical laboratories to see the “demo” patients, the state-of-the-art interactive classrooms, a fully-equipped apartment that allows students to evaluate and care for clients in their homes, and the beautiful Donor Wall where University League is recognized. Coleen Southwell, Director of Advancement and Development, who planned our tour, arranged for us to meet three UL scholarship recipients who shared

their stories with us over a delicious lunch. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to meet these fine student nurses. Emily Redovich received the scholarship that University League gave in honor of Mary Jo Willis, a Clinical Professor Emerita and University League Past President. At the beginning of our tour, we heard a presentation by Clinical Assistant Professor, Yvette Egan, on her fall course where new students are taught about “therapeutic relationships” with older adults. Some of the students may not have had opportunities to form

relationships with older adults except their grandparents. In this class, they learn to ask questions to strangers to learn about the life style of the older adult and the strategies they have developed overtime to maintain their independence. The students also learn to assess activities of daily living, mobility and cognitive function using recognized assessment tools.

Yvette is always looking for elder volunteers to pair with her students. This sounds like a wonderful volunteer opportunity for University League members who may be interested in being part of the education of first-year nursing students. Participation involves

four home visits by the student. This is an opportunity to befriend a younger person and “give back” by helping student nurses improve their interviewing skills and social interactions. If you are interested in being a volunteer for this course, please contact Yvette Egan at [email protected] or call her cell at 608-330-2626.

ANTIQUES AND UNIQUES—The Antiques Interest Group

Under co-captains, Norma Magnuson and Barbara Pillinger, the 2014-15 Antiques Group is off and running—and what an exciting fall this has been! First on the docket was a September voyage to Lake Geneva and to the historic Black Point Mansion. Black Point, a late 19th century Queen Anne country house, is the newest acquisition of the Wisconsin State Historical Society. And, to get there, most of us went by boat! Next, we visited the Lake Geneva History Museum—a delightful museum featuring the Lake Geneva area: Tiffany windows from the Crane (Plumbing) Mansion, Presidential china, etc. Our last stop was to a unique private lake home for libations and vittles before winding our way back to Madison through the colorful fall countryside. October brought another journey, this time westward to Mount Horeb. After a tasty lunch at Sjölinds (Swedish meatballs, lefse, etc.), we met with Brian Bigler, “Mr. Mount Horeb,” who showed us through his pride and joy--the Mount Horeb History Museum. And what a gem it is! This interesting and creative museum demonstrates what a small town can do to preserve its precious heritage, in this case, largely Norwegian. Our day ended with a tour and refreshments at Brian’s historic home. Fabulous!

We stayed home in November, using a “re-purposing” theme popular with DIY folks throughout the ages. We crafted a gaggle of holiday angels, utilizing vintage glass light-

fixture shades. In December, we enjoyed a delicious holiday luncheon at the Paoli School House Café, featuring the history of the original one-room school building and Paoli, itself, as well as special holiday remembrances. (Ask us about “The

Billy Hemingway Story,” but please bring a Kleenex.) Lastly, we will welcome 2015 with an early January “seminar” titled “American Indian Arts: Then and Now.” Where else? Katy’s Indian Arts Shop on Monroe Street—a wonderful resource for new pawn, vintage turquoise jewelry, baskets, sand paintings, rugs and blankets.

The UL ANTIQUES Group ROCKS! So do our Boston Rockers. Won’t you join us? Check your UL Yearbook for information.

Candlelight Dinner and an Evening with the Kat Trio On November 22, the 159 members of University League who attended were treated to a wonderful dinner and an absolutely splendid musicale with the Kat Trio: Vladislav Gorbich, Victoria Gorbich and Joseph Ross, who not only played classical selections, but some pop and folk as well. The cook staff at Nakoma outdid themselves and an excellent time was had by all, as you can see in the pictures below.

A packed house at Nakoma Golf Club—when have we seen that before? Every section open. And a very attentive audience! Not an empty plate in sight.

“O -- KAY!” A SHOUT-OUT FOR PRESIDENT KAY

Buenos días! Our fearless leader for 2014-15, Kay Jarvis-Sladky, entered this world at the port of San Diego. When she was three years old, her parents moved back to the Midwest, and Kay spent her “formative years” (her description) growing up in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She then headed to the University of Wisconsin at Madison and soon began her pursuit and passion for Spanish language and culture. With a degree in Spanish Education in hand, she took a detour to the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, where she earned her MA in Spanish Literature. She also spent a year living and working in Madrid. Along the way, Kay Jarvis met Bob Sladky, her “TA” in an education course entitled “Supervision and Instruction.”

With the quiet approval and blessings of the professor, Kay and Bob became an item, and the rest is history. K & B have two daughters, both elementary school teachers – Claire in Connecticut and Janie in New Mexico – and four young grands. Kay’s own teaching career here in Madison spanned more than 30 years – at East High School and mostly at La Follette, where she served as department chair and taught Spanish language, literature, and popular culture. Both Kay and Bob love to travel. They particularly enjoyed a recent Grand Circle cruise on the Volga River from Moscow to St. Petersburg. In addition, in alternate years they visit with a number of old friends in Oviedo, the capital city of the Asturias region in northern Spain When asked about her vision for University League this year, Kay responded: “Initially, I thought ‘to stay the course,’ following in Mary Jo’s excellent footsteps. Now the Long Range Planning and Policy Committee is considering the BOD’s SWOT (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges/Threats) analysis done at the November BOD meeting. The LRPP Committee, led by Sally Lorenz, will be working in January to establish five-year goals for the League. These should be presented to the BOD in February or March.”

Buena suerte, Kay. Hasta la vista.
