On behalf of The Spartan, I would like to congratulate you on completing high school. This issue is all about you and your accomplishments. We tried to put some of this year’s best memories in print and also look back with nostalgia at our shared past. It is our hope that you will keep this issue and look back on it later when you decide to take a trip down memory lane. And when you do, remem-ber that the Class of 2010 was risky. Our class was classy, sexy, awesome, spontaneous, and unique. We will be remembered by everyone, for many years to come. All that is left to say is, good bye, and we wish you the best of luck in college and in your future endeavors.

Technol-ogy is changing ourworldatabreakneckpace.At thedawnofthe SiliconAge, weare seeing medicalmarvels and engi-neering wonders thatwould, in any othertime,equatetomagic. High tech-nology, the Internetand electronic ser-vices are changinghow we do businessandinteractwithpeo-ple.Quitesimply,itischanginghowwelive. Our societyischanginginstrideswith this technologi-cal process.TheTC/IP modem has heralded a new age—theAge of Silicon.After all it is the latestmaterial that we have bent to our will. With it, we see the decline ofdiscrimination,andtheriseofmeritocracy.However, the SiliconAge brings with itnew woes, heretofore unseen by man. Wenowliveinafullworld,oratleastonenearingcapacity.Theresourcesof our planet have been stretched to thepoint where they can go no further. Ouradvancements in medicine and publicpolicyhavefaroutstrippedouradvancesin agriculture and the allocation of re-sources.Theseresources,bothrenewableand non-renewable and their use are thebiggestproblemsfacingoursociety.Peakoilandgreentechnologybothtakecenterstagewhenweconsiderthesechallenges. Inadditionto thephysicalchal-lenges associated with a paradigm shiftin how society runs, there are the intan-gible challenges of reconciling the oldwith the new and the ethical questionsthat inevitably arise with great boundsforward in technology. We must con-sidertheimplicationofstemcellresearch,abortion,thenannystate,andthelikeonsociety, inorder to advance as apeople. That’swherewecomein.Lookaround. Statistically, you’re the secondbestclassofkidsinthestate,andthedif-ferenceinscoresislessthan2%,smallerthan the margin of error in most similarcircumstances, and the 80th best in themost industrializednationon the faceofthe Earth. It’s going to be our job, in acoupleofyears, to face thosechallengesandpushthelimitsoftechnology.We—theworld’s next set of doctors, lawyers,

engineers, etc.–are up to bat next. Ourmedicalproblemsaremorecomplex,ourlegal questionsmore paralyzing, our en-gineeringchallengesmore technical,andour policy problems more difficult than in the past. But we’re some of the bestthereisoutthere.It’sgoingtobeuptous. Asweleavehighschool,beittoafour-yearuniversity,ora2yearcollege,or something completely different—wehave the chance to change things. Butequally important is the opportunity forus to change ourselves. It is one of thefewchancesweget inlifetocompletelystart over.As we move out, both out ofourhomes,andourhighschool,wehavethechancetoreinventourselves.Itdoesn’tmatterwhatwedidalready.Wealreadygotwhereare!It’swhatwe’redoingnowthatmatters.ConsidertheconceptofaTabula Rasa, a blank slate. Everything’s got tostartsomewhere,andthisisafreshstart. It’sabravenewworldoutthere.Out there we’re on our own. We haveupon ourselves great responsibility.AsJFK said before me, “to who much isgiven,much is expected.”Wehave readthe good fortune of having an excellenteducation,sofar,andstartingout,forthemostpart,withoutwantoffoodorshelter,oranyphysicalneed.Itisonourshouldersto go out and save the world.We’re ondeck. It’s about to be true for us to figure out who we are and what we’re doing. I, for one, am confident that we can handle the responsibilities of tomor-row.After all, it’s not that long fromnowthatwewillbeoutthererunningtheshow.It’sabouttobeourturn,andthere’sa lot to be done. I say, let’s get started.

Thisyear’sgraduationspeakerswillbeGabrielleBadieandAlexandraVanWie.Itwasatoughdecisionforthepanel,astheyhadtoselectfromagroupoftalentedstudentsandarticulatespeeches.Thesetwopagesfeaturesthosestudentswhotriedouttobethisyear’sgraduationspeakers,butdid

notmakeit.TheSpartanthoughtthattheyshouldallgetachancetoberead,ifnotheard.

Upon enter-ing into LaCañadaHighSchool,eachandeveryone

ofushadameetingwithournewcounselor.Theypulledup our eighth grade class,schedules, andgrades, andthenstartedplacingusintofor the upcoming seniors. And once that 9thgrade schedule was all inplace, we were all set ona path to take us throughthe rest of high school. Iremember being terrified.I was baffled that evenbefore my first day of 9thgrade, I was already sup-posedtohaveaplanforthenext fouryearsofmy life. AndthensuddenlyIamattheendofmysenioryear.And the choices thatI have to make have veryquicklygonefrombeingrel-ativelymenialtoincrediblymeaningful.NowIbasicallyhavetodecidewhatIwanttodofortherestofmylife. Yes, at the youngageof17,allofusatsomepoint or another in thepastyearhavebeenasked,whetherbyafriendoffam-ilymember,“Whatdoyouwanttodo?”Asinwhatjobdoyouwanttohave?Whatdoyouwantyourcareertobe?AndalmosteverytimeIhearthatquestion,itshocksme that we are that old. Now,thepaththatwas so clearly defined for usinhighschoolisquicklyfading away as we walkdown the last stretchof it.Thepathaheadlooksalittlebumpier and there are defi-nitelynocurbs,anditactu-ally looks different for allofus.Nowwegettodecidewhatwewanttodo,wherewe want to go, how wewant to liveour lives, andwegettodoallofthiswithmuchlessinstructionthaninthesepast coupleofyears. Because if I amgoingtobehonest,wewereessentially herded throughhigh school.We had a lotof guidance and directioninstilled in us by the loftyexpectations that our highschoolhadsetupforus.Andthismotivatedmanyofus,aswewereoftenpushedtodoseeminglyimmense,nearlyimpossibleamountsofwork. Yet after manylatenightsandearlymorn-ings,asmuchasourparentsmight hate to admit it, we

have reachedawholenewlevel of freedom.And Iam not talking about thefreedom that you receivedwhenyougotyourlicense-that was definitely limited freedom; you only reallyhaditfrom5amto11pm. Now, we haveearnedamuchdifferenttypeof freedom, that takes usbeyondtherestraintsofhighschool and into the world,thefuture,adulthood,whichcomestiedupinapackagewithalotofresponsibility. Soparents,donotbetoosadyet,becauseeventhough we have learned aheckofalotinhighschooland been almost too wellpreparedfortheworldout-sideofit,wewillstillneedyoutoteachusalotabouthowtohandletheserespon-sibilities,andofcoursehowto do our laundry beforeweheadoffintotheworld. Now tobea littlemorenostalgic,everyonejustthinkaboutallofyourclass-mates around you.Aboutthatawkwardtimeyouhadto do a group project withsomeone when you hardlyknew them, and how youhavegrowntolovesomanyofthem,butthenalsotonotexactly love some others.

Even so,ourhighschool has been a part ofour lives, and somehow,althoughweare incrediblydifferent, we all fit intothishighschool.LCHShasshaped all of us, and wehavehelpedshapeit-thereisnodenyingthatwehaveaconnectiontothisplace.Wewilltakethememories,les-sons, and experiences thatwe have from high schoolandkeep themwithus forthe rest of our lives.Thatphrasealoneseemsdauntingandscaryandexcitingallatthesametime-therestofourlives,butitisthetruth,highschool reallyhassetusupfortherestofourlives.AndIthinkthatwhiletherearemany reasons why we aresoreadyandexcitedtoleavehereandmoveon,therearejustasmanyreasonswhywearesosadtosaygood-bye. So I encourageallofyouSpartans to takea look at yourself in thisvery moment and enjoy itbecause very few times inyour life will you get towear such a ridiculous hatandnotbemadefunof.Butreallysoakuptheselastfewminutes with one anoth-er- you have earned them.

ItwasawarmSeptemberday,as I remembered it. Every-thing was huge. Imposing,Alien.Irememberstaringat

the room numbers in confusion.703, 711, 729 like some borgout of Star Trek. Resistance isfutile. Coming from elementaryschooltothisgoliathenstructuralhodgepodge was a very visceralshock,andat thatmomentIwasjustbeginningtounderstandhowlostIwas.Iwalkedintoroom709andsatdown.Allaroundmewerethedullwhispersoffriendshipsyettobemade,oldelementaryschoolhold–outs trying to cling to thelastvestigesofaworldnolongerthereandathousandotherfacelessscenarios all resulting from mu-tualfeelingsofdisplacement,and–thoughwedidn’tknowthetermyet–existentialistangst.What if they find out I don’t belong here. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to be in middle school. Maybe this is just a dream. Isatsilently,surroundedbypeoplewhoIwouldsharethenext six years of my life with,who I would share with laughs,tears, fights, slights, anger, love, hatred,insidejokes,run-inswiththeman,waterbottles,munchies,and a thousand other things toosmalltorememberbutstillvitallyimportanttowhoIamtodayandtotallyunthinkabletotheawkwardtwelve-yearoldboysittinginhisTony Hawk sweatshirt waitingfor middle school to begin inearnest.The teacher walked in. Jump now to the firstday of freshman year. Friendshave been made and lost sincethoseohsofaroffmiddleschooldays. Inches have been grown,hairhasbeensprouted,andIhavetakenmyplaceamongthenoble

ranks of people around theglobe gleefully designated“teenagers.”Iwaltzintomyfirst period nonchalantly,taking each stride like aman on a mission. I am alion, prowling the scene,searchingformymates.Myfriends wave me over totheir secluded corner oversummer. People who neverreallywerefriendsareactinguncharacteristically civil toeachother.Thisisaspectaclerare in the world of highschool interaction; takingplaceonly-maybe-twiceorthreetimesinawholeyear.It isa timeofdétente.Igoandhappilysitbymygroupof close friends, contentthatIdon’thavetositaloneand ply my friendship likea ware to new people.Weallpretendnottonoticetheonethingthatismostpres-entlyonourminds.WEAREHIGH SCHOOLERS!!!HOW COOL ISTHIS!!! Ithink,butsaynothing.Everythingis expressed in understatementsandpleasantries.Weareathome. Finally, let us move tothe first day of senior year. These little7th,8th,and9thgradersscurryby our knees like ants skittishlyavoiding hungryTyrannosaurusRexes. We are the masters ofthe school, savants, the epitomeof cool, of epic, of spectacular.Friendships are no longer theputty of years pasts, no-no-no,theyarecemented,long-standing,almost filial loves. We are broth-ers. Sisters. Friends. Girlfriends.Boyfriends.Exes.Everything.Thewebofinterconnectednessisgreatandcomplicated,andeachoneof

usknowsexactlywherewestandinit.You,you’remyboyfriend’sex-Chem tutor. Can I get a ridehome?Hey, rememberwhenmyex-girlfriend and you went out?What’s the STATs homework?You and I were best friends ineight grade! I didn’t know youstill went to this school!What’sthat? You’re in five of my classes? Wow, my bad. Continuing on…hereweare.HereIam.Thesameawkwardpre-pubescentchild,allgrownup,makinghiswaytothesame science fiction class rooms, walking the same halls, funnel-ingmoneyintothesamevendingmachines,eatinginthesamequad;but different, in so many ways.

Some slight, some massive, butalletchedintotheconcreteoftheplace I spent seven hours a day,five days a week, nine months a yearforthepastsixyearsin.Itisallspeedingtoaclose,andthewallbeforemeisrushingkindoffast. Andnow,itbeginsagain.Eachofusaregoingourseparateways.Bonds are fraying, friend-ships are taking a back seat tocareers,tofutures.Wegoagaintobiggerandbetterplaces.Tofarofflands.To citiesof tall buildings,and worlds of snow and trees.Each of us has his or her ownpath to take, separate from thepaths our friends and peers willtread;nut-thetruthis-wewillall

shareonething.Wewillsharethis.Today,eachofusleavesapieceofourselves here, on this very field. We leave a portion of our lives.We leave a definition of who we are.Weleavealifethatcanneverbegonebacktoorrelived.Istandhere, in my ceremonial robes,preachingtoyou-acongregationoffriendsandacquaintances-andIamforcedtosmile.Ihavemadeit.Thecycleiscomplete.Thoughthispartofmylifeisover,anewoneisbeginning.There’snotellingwhat’sinstorefortherestofthismessy,chaotic,unorganizedthingthat is life;andI’maboutasex-citedasIcanbe.CongratulationsClass of 2010.You’ve made it.

Hello seniors of2010. T h o s ehave got to be

thesweetestwordsI’veeverheard.However,inpreparingtohearthemspokentometoday,itmeantthatIwouldhave to write this speech;which I have dreaded. Ithinkit’sbecausemymindis always running on fastforward; making it difficult toslowdownlongenoughtowritemythoughtsdowninessayform.Myattentionspan is that of a squirrelhopped up on Red Bull. Anyway, I wasworking at my dad’s office threeweeksago,havingnoidea what to speak aboutwhenIsuddenlysawasmallpamphletentitled“TheRealPurposeofLife.”Igrabbeditnotbecauseofthetitlebutbecauseofthewayitlooked. The first four let-terswereinbigboldblackform while the word lifewaswhitewithablackout-line.The background was

asolidwhitewithnoothermarkings.Forsomereason,IwasdrawntothispamphleteventhoughIknewitwasprobably a piece of reli-giouspropaganda.Iopenedit cautiously preparing toread its answer to a life-long question we all thinkabout at least once in ourlives.And surprisingly theideawaseasytounderstand. It clearly statedthatthepurposeofatypicalpersonistogotoschoolandeventuallygraduate,getmar-ried,getajob,haveafam-ily,buyahome,sendtheirchildren through school,continue to work, even-tually retire, get sick anddie.Thissounded tooreal.Lookaroundyouandreal-ize how many people youknow have or will followthispathwithoutrealizingit. Yet, Ibelieve thatwe,studentsoftheclassof2010,arestrivingtoaccom-plishmuchmorethanthat;and I believe we will!Wearefullofgoalsandrealpo-tential.Wehavebeenfortu-

nateenoughtoberaisedinacitywhereparentalinvolve-ment, teacher involvementandadministrativeinvolve-ment are the norm.A rarefind in these modern times. There wasn’t aday that went by where Ididn’t hear an announce-ment over the PA systemtelling me about how ourschool has ranked highestor number one in a com-petition somewhere in theUS; from a single personscoring the most points inawomen’sbasketballgameorrankinghighinbuildingaroboticmachinethatcouldplaysoccer.Ourclassisfullof dreamers, however weare a select few that willbecome actual achievers. Idefyyoutowalkdown these hallways andnot bump into a remark-able senior. A person filled with a creative drive anda passion. When I comeback in tenyears toattendour high school reunion, Idon’twanttobumpintoyouhaving to read your nam-

etagtorememberyour name. No,I want to knowyour name be-cause I saw it ina billboard, in amagazine, in acampaign sloganorinthecreditsofablockbusterhit. Becausewerearethebest.Wearethefuture.AndwhenI lookatthisclassofse-niors, I see hopein a new genera-tion filled withgreatness.Peoplearealwayssayingthatwewillbetheones that will beinfluenced by our world problemsthemostandthatistrue.Itisuptous to fix our cur-rentproblemsandI speak for thisclass when I sayBRING THEMON! So go outandbeYOURbestbecause whenIhearthewords,“Hel-

loseniorsof2010”,IhearACOMINGREVOLUTION!

happiestthingtobeandalsotheleastrewardingthingtobe.Boom!Theregoeshighschool. I might’ve dustedthelastshardoftheresultingdebrisoffmyselfhaditnotbeen for my insistence togradually become a betterperson.Maybeallof thosethingsare true,but they’renotpartof thebigpicture. High school hastaughtmethatfateplaysamajorroleintheoutcomesof an individual’s life. Ithas shown me that chanceisadistractionthatyoucan

forgeanentireexistenceon.However,botharenecessaryandbothshouldbe feared,revered,andsteered-awayfrom.Mygreatestregretisthat I spent toomuch timethinking (it’s dangerous!).My greatest triumph wasin conditioning myself toearn everything I want sothatwhenIcatchabreakIforget how my hard workgave luck the opportunityto find my way. Bah! Now I’mlecturing.Thatrequiresthinking.Thinking is bad.That’s the important thing.

Classof2010,youhaveliveduptoyourbill-ing.Weenteredasthenew juvenile delin-quentsontheblock,

butnowweleavewithdignityandrespect-asanhistoricclass.Whata turnaround.Whatacomeback. It remindsmeof some-thingIsawthispastweekend,Les MisérablesandthestoryofJeanValjean. Despite overwhelmingcondemnation to a life of isola-tionforthepettiestofcrimes,heearnedasecondchancebyastroke

ofgoodfortune.Asamanofre-storedhonorandaccomplishment,Valjeanstrivesfor theprosperityofothers, theconsummategiver.There are many times when hecould be consumed by revenge,buthe responds tohisnemesis’sadvances only with forgiveness.This struggle parallels our ownhigh school experience, wherewe have heard others give uslabelslike“theworstclassever.” However,historyspeakstothecontrary.Inthisyear,wehaveperformedepicslikeMacbethandLes Mis.Itwasriskytopursuesuchendeavors,butthetalentofouract-

ingdepartmentwasuptothetask. Inathletics,teamsacrossthe sports spectrum reached thepostseason.Among the manynotable runs was Boys’Tennis,which overcame great odds toreach the quarterfinals of CIF. 2010’s academics fea-tured a slew of National MeritScholars and a winner of thevaunted Silver KeyAward forphotography.Initssecondyearofexistence, Mr. Padilla’s “MirrorThemes in Literature and FineArt” course inspired studentsto be scholars and consider thegreat questions of our existence.

The icing on the cakeoccurred when seniors floodedthe floor of the gym to the tune of

Earth, Wind, and Fire’s “Sep-tember”, a move both audaciousand characteristically hopeful.

The recent gossip and confu-sion that has been spreading like venomthroughout the La Canada High Schoolcampusistherumorthatmanyseniorstu-dentswillnotbepermitted toparticipatein their graduation ceremony.The mostcommoncausefornotbeingableto“walk”at theceremonyis theirpoorattendance. Senior students were warnedat an assembly at the beginning of theschool year to take precaution of howmany absences were adding up in theirattendancerecord.Ifstudentshadupto40absencestheywouldbeforcedtofaceharshconsequences.Studentswerealsowarnedin contracts they signed that poor atten-dancecouldleadtomissingoutonsenioractivities and their graduation ceremony. The uproar from the 2010graduating class mainly stems from thefact that last year’s graduating studentswere all allowed to attend the ceremo-ny despite similar attendance issues. The district has been trying toenforce the attendance policies as muchaspossibleeachyear,butthisyearafewchanges were made. Students attendedinformational assemblies, signed atten-dancecontracts,andhadletterssenthome.Also,theadministrationinstitutedstricterregulationsonoff-campuslunch.Studentswere also informed that they would besuspendediffoundinHahamongnapark,even to move their cars from the twohourparkingzones, in fear that thiswasacauseforpoorattendance.Studentsarenotallowedtoreturntotheircarsanytimeduringschoolhoursexceptforlunch,andteachers were told they are not allowedto let students move their cars or getanythingfromthemduringschoolhours. Assistant Principal Ms. David-sonexplained,“Lastyearwasadifferentculture.ThiswastheyearIfeltwecoulddo this.” She also made it clear that hergoal is to get as many seniors to walkin the ceremony as possible, but also toadheretotheschool’sattendancepolicies. ThestudentswhowereindangerofnotwalkingbecauseoftheirattendancereceivedaletterinApril.Theletterincluded

their attendance records.Another letterwas sent to theirparents informing themofameetingthatwouldbeheldwithMs.Davidson to discuss their situation andwhetherconsequenceswouldbemadeforthosewhodidnotimprove.Bythistime,attendancehadbecomeahuge issueandover50 students received this letter.Ms.Davidson met with those students whomadeanobviousattempttoimprovetheirattendance and took themoff thedangerlist.Otherstudentswhowere improving,butstillhadtomakeaneffortinordertowalk,weregiventheopportunitytoeitherattendSaturdaySchool,speaktothejuniorclassabouttheimportanceofattendance,write an apology letter to their teachersfornotattendingclass,orcompletecom-munity serviceprojectswithinour town.The meetings scheduled for the studentswerepurposelysettobeclosetograduationtogive themtimetoshowimprovement.It was also feared that if students knewthey were unable to walk early on, theywould then stick with their poor atten-dancehabits.Thosestudentsareallowedto attend all senior activities includingprom even if they will not be allowedto walk at their high school graduation. In my opinion, it makes senseto have the meetings later in the year tolet thestudents improve,butat thesametimestudentshavebeenwaitinguntiltheweekbeforetoknowforsureiftheywillbe allowed to attend the ceremony withtheirclass.Seniorsarefallingintoanxietyoverthefactthattheirparentshavealreadyinvited family from across the countryto see them walk across the stage withtheir class. Graduation is a celebrationfor the entire senior class, the class thatthesestudentshavegrownupwith,acel-ebration that theyhavemade it together. It would havebeen completelyunderstandable tokeep students fromat-tending senior activities because of poorattendance, which follows the signedcontracts. However, students were alsowarned beforehand of the possibilitythat theywouldnotbeable toattend themost important event in high school. Itisunthinkabletotheirfamiliesandtotherestof the senior class tonothave thesestudentswithusinourgraduationandintheceremonytobegintherestofourlives.
