In 2015, Calgary Meals on Wheels celebrated its 50th anniversary. From humble beginnings as a project for the social action committee of the Presbyterian United Church Women in 1965, the organization has grown into the professional, focused operation it is today due in no small part to Audrey Higgs, Lesley Moffat, Edna Gainor and Esther Babet, our founding executive.

The very first Annual Report, issued in 1966, gives a fascinating snapshot of our history, but also a starting point from which we can truly see how we have continued to grow to meet the needs of an expanding city. November 15, 1965 was a cold autumn day – temperatures in the city peaked in the early afternoon at -5 but spent much of the day around the -10 mark. That day, Calgary Meals on Wheels made its very first delivery to eight clients in a city of just 311,000. In that first year, the organization delivered to 100 clients, and over 7,500 meals; from those first eight, by the time the first Annual Report was delivered 50 years ago, the client base had grown to 22-30 daily. Meals were prepared that first year at Calgary Northill Community YMCA, itself now long since gone.

In 2015, our golden anniversary year, we delivered more than 420,000 meals, averaging 1,700 per day to a city now home to almost 1.1 million. We rapidly outgrew Northill YMCA, spent seven years at Hillhurst United Church, ten years at 828 – 4th Avenue and then thirty years on Macleod Trail. Now, of course, we have our own dedicated building, and our kitchen is state of the art and operating with plenty of capacity.

During 2015 we held a number of special events to mark this milestone including a staff party and our 1960’s themed Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. We continue to make headlines with coverage across radio, TV, print and social media and have cemented our place in Calgary society.

While we celebrated our milestones, we were also aware that 2015 was a difficult year for Calgary and Alberta. The decline in oil prices and the continued economic stresses obviously impacted not-for-profits in terms of both additional demand for services and a much more competitive environment for securing donations. Calgary Meals on Wheels has, as always, stepped up to the plate in terms of assisting Calgarians in need, while still securing donations to ensure we continue to operate with a balanced budget. Our client base continues to grow, our services and offerings to expand, and our staff and volunteer base continue to be exceptionally dedicated.

The organization carries no debt and operating and capital results were positive with an excess of revenues over expenses of $197,570. Calgary Meals on Wheels continues to build a strong and sustainable organization – one that is ideally positioned and ready to meet the challenges ahead.

We can now look forward to the first year of our next half century, where we can look to grow strategically over the coming years to utilize the many opportunities our current secure position offers us. The organization is strongly committed to constantly seek ways to expand our services to those Calgarians most in need.

On behalf of the Board, we would like to thank and acknowledge every employee, volunteer, member and supporter for your continued work. After 50 years we have been blessed with an unending stream of exceptionally talented and dedicated staff and an unbelievably committed group of volunteers which is truly remarkable. It is a privilege to serve as President of Calgary Meals on Wheels and share this experience with you all.

Annual Report 2015 | Calgary Meals on Wheels 5

It is no easy task to summarize an entire year in a one-page letter, much less pay homage to the last 50 years as we mark this important milestone. Many things change from year to year and decade to decade: the number of meals, the number of clients, the types of programs, etc. Beyond these statistics that define our growth and development, perhaps the most important changes are the faces.

Each day, behind each door we knock on, there is the face of a client who needs our help. The diversity in their age, race, income, and needs demonstrate the inclusiveness and breadth of our mission. Their smiles of appreciation are the fuel for our work. Our clients come and go as they need us, but their stories become part of the fabric of who we are.

As our client base and meal production have grown, so too has our team of hundreds of volunteers. These amazing individuals, corporations, churches, and service clubs are the unwavering connection between our clients and our organization. The interaction, the kind visits and chats, provides an important social connection in the community and provides peace of mind for clients and their loved ones. Their dedication and kindness keeps our mission going year after year.

Our ability to keep up with the demand for our service and the growth of our programs is largely due to the generosity of our supporters. Each donor understands how important nutrition is to wellness and how important independence is to dignity. Every year for the past fifty years, our donors have stepped up to meet the needs in the community. Their support is vital to our progress.

I am privileged to work with exceptional staff who are dedicated to making their community better. They each bring different talents and personalities to a team that feels like family. Our team has evolved over time, but the players each leave their legacy in the work they undertake.

We are also fortunate to have many friends in the community who support our mission. These friends are found in each of our vendors and suppliers who are committed to

helping us achieve the best quality and affordability for our clients. Our friends also represent the partner agencies who help us extend our reach into the community

to support those who are most vulnerable. Our friends are also willing to lend their voice and advocate for us. From representatives of government and media who speak for us, to the students and teachers who represent us and teach about us through class projects, their influence is invaluable.

These faces, these people, are what built this organization. In 1965, a total of 300 volunteers, a few donors, and 2 staff started serving 8 clients which grew to 100 within a year. In 2015, we worked with 862 volunteers, 964 donors, and 40

staff to help serve 1,846 individuals, 40 groups, and 11 schools. Every individual who has helped us on our journey these past 50 years is part of the impact and

accomplishment of this organization. Our entire mission is comprised of people who have come forward to build and connect our community to support a basic need while empowering thousands to maintain their health and independence.

People are what make this organization great. The faces change over time, but the compassion and generosity never do. If you are reading this letter, you are likely one of these faces. Thank you for joining us and contributing to our impact.

2015 was a very busy year in terms of production. Despite having only a skeleton operations crew the department managed to increase its output from 2014 by 13%. We owe much of this success to the hard work of our staff and their training.

In August, the purchase and installation of a new shrink wrap machine allowed

us to increase our overall packing efficiency and food safety. In addition we also changed the packaging of our Lunch & Supper program meals to include a box. This allows us to package more meals with less errors and avoid damage during transportation.

During the year we also introduced our new bulk program which has been a great success. The demand for this program is rapidly outpacing our

capacity to supply it and so we strive to expand our staff in the future to be able to meet the demand.

In 2016 the Production Department is planning to grow to accommodate the increasing demand for our services. We want to make sure that we have the right people and equipment to be able to serve as many clients as we can, safely and effectively.

We had a very smooth 2015 in the Operations Department. Nevertheless 2015 did have some noteworthy events for our department.

We welcomed into our family a new staff driver, Mike Smith, to help with the increasing demand for our services. This new hire was of extreme help considering the increase in number of group meal deliveries we had to do in 2015.

We also entered a partnership with Bubbles Car Wash where they agreed to wash our fleet at no cost. This is a great benefit to us because not only does it save us money but it also allows us to showcase our vans wherever we go.

The fluctuating oil market gave us a small reprieve in 2015. The lower cost of gas prices allowed us to operate our fleet at a reduced cost which wil l translate into savings for the department.

We also started a new recycling initiative brought on by a new ordinance of the city of Calgary. Our building will become even more recycling friendly to comply with the plans that the city has laid out.

In 2016 the Operations Department is looking forward to the purchase of a new van for our fleet, as well as a possible expansion to the roster of staff drivers.

Throughout the year we hosted events and sent special thank yous honoring; clients, volunteers, staff, and donors. Reoccuring events such our Volunteer Luncheons and the YYC Hot Chocolate Fest were enhanced by our 50th theme. We brought 1965 back to one of our

clients, Mr. Arnold Knopp, as we delivered his meal with two vintage cars.

The car owners, were so happy to bring a smile to Mr. Knopp’s face as they answered questions about their prized cars and took him for a spin around the block in style!

2015 saw us begin, what we hope will be a very long lasting partnership, with Alpha

House. With support from the United Way, we began delivering our group meals to their facilities in May. The impact on their residents has “improved their overall health”.

We welcomed many guest volunteers during the year and are grateful for the involvement from the Calgary community. A special thank you to Mayor Naheed Nenshi who helped deliver meals and

serve the community.

~ Calgary Meals on Wheels Volunteer

The past year was very eventful. We celebrated our 50th year in service and with it, we celebrated those people who have helped us achieve so much since then, our volunteers. We honored people like Hattie Boothman who have been part of the Calgary Meals on Wheels Family since its beginning.

This year we were thrilled to be the recipient of the Community Advocate Organization award presented at the Calgary Awards on June 10th. The award recognizes the outstanding

contribution and achievements of the volunteers, donors, and staff of Calgary Meals on Wheels over the past 50 years. Thank you to all our supporters for your generosity and dedication to serving the community. We could not do what we do without you.

Our most notable special guest for the year was Mayor Nenshi, who spent his lunch hour delivering alongside Calgary Meals on Wheels staff to wish our clients a Happy Holiday and New Year. Mayor Nenshi enjoyed meeting our clients, and our clients appreciated the special visit from our local leader.

Ex t ra cheer was sp read by ou r volunteers, including the Mayor, during the holiday season, when addition to their meals, clients also received donated gifts or stockings from our community partners Seniors Secret Service and F.E. Osborne Junior High School.

In 2015, our core volunteer number did not vary significantly, however; we hope that in 2016 we can expand routes to reach more clients. The increase in routes will mean that we will be looking to add more volunteers to our growing family.

Client Breakdown

2015 saw many changes in our Client Services department. We experienced s ign ificant growth in our Frozen Program, particularly soups and baked goods. A wonderful result from our menu expansion in the Spring of 2014.

In the Fall of 2015 we administered our annual Client Satisfaction Survey. Results were favourable, with the overall satisfaction level of the taste and appearance of the food rated at 91% and 96% respectively. We also measured client outcomes around enhancing

physical, emotional and social well being; 84% of respondents agree that the meals help them to eat food that is healthier and more nutritious, 82% agree they feel healthier and have more energy because of the meals and 90% indicate that receiving the meals helps them to stay independent.

Through a grant, our Client Intake C o o r d i n a t o r j o i n e d a t e a m o f representat ives from Calgary Fire Department (CFD) and Calgary Seniors Resources Society. This group attended the “Remembering When Conference” in Florida in November. The focus of

the conference was to emphasize the importance of partnerships within the promotion of 8 fire and 8 fall prevention key messages. Calgary Meals on Wheels will continue to promote home fire safety inspections and fall prevention awareness with our clients and partner with the CFD to connect clients to this vital community service.

We look forward to 2016 and continuing to provide healthy meals and social connections that will help to enhance the overall social, emotional and physical wellbeing of Calgarians experiencing food insecurity.

2016 Fundraising Goal

$898,000

2015 brought challenging economic times for so many in our province and much uncer tainty for our non-profit sector. Calgary Meals on Wheels was for tunate to rece ive unwaver ing philanthropic support from many of our long-time supporters.

We also established new relationships and received gifts from a number of new donors who realized the need for their support was even greater during this time, as our communities began to show signs of struggle. In return, we are proud

to repor t more than $875,000 was donated in support of our clients and programs; we successfully met our fundraising goal.

It’s during times like these it is important to recognize how very fortunate we are to live in such a charitable city.

The Fund Development Team welcomed both a new Events Coordinator and Marketing Coordinator throughout the year. The new team members have brought with them both experience and a f resh new perspect ive. Wi th a combination of both new and practiced

members I’m confident our team can continue to meet expectations as we move into 2016.

Looking forward to the next year we recognize that our city continues to endure hardship as a result of our current economy, an unsettling feeling for a l l fundrais ing professionals. However, the Fund Development Team is motivated to raise our goal of $898,000. After all we know the clients of Calgary Meals on Wheels are depending on us.

Partnerships and relationships are key to our success as a non-profit. As fundraisers we cherish our relationships and we aim to provide our donors with an excellent donor experience. Our team is dedicated to providing our donors with respect and appreciation, and in turn providing the utmost transparency in our funding programs.

I want to say a special thank you to all those who invested in our mission and who have taken the time to see the true value Calgary Meals on Wheels brings to our community. In truth, you have made a difference in the lives of your neighbors.

Year in Review - Treasurer Report

The enclosed financial statements of Calgary Meals on Wheels, which were audited by Meyers Norris Penny LLP, reflect an operating surplus of $198,000. for 2015, despite the economic downturn during the year. This reflects the continuing strong support from our donors, combined with a strong focus by our management team on controlling costs. Calgary Meals on Wheels continues to be debt-free, with cash invested in a capital reserve fund for future equipment replacement. Our strong financial position allows us to examine alternatives for expanding our core programs in the city. Our dedicated volunteers, employees, supporters and donors make it possible for Calgary Meals on Wheels to continue to be a strong community resource to ensure the nutritional needs of all Calgarians are met, and I offer my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of them for their ongoing support.

Respectfully yours,
