TOR

KATE M. MEECHAN, MBA

VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads started in 1957 by a group of dedicated citizens seeking to get our community engaged in giving back. Although our mission has expanded, this is still an integral part of what we do in Hampton Roads. Our new tagline, CONNECT. EQUIP. MOBILIZE. helps us better explain the breadth and depth of our mission to the community.

As we continue to grow, we hope to become an indispensable resource to all of our citizens. Whether it is through the community engagement you may have at your place of work, a nonprofit’s touch on our most vulnerable citizens, or by directly engaging you in volunteerism through our online listing of service opportunities. We hope you will develop with us and support us in our endeavors to allow all of our citizens to be the change they wish to see in the world.

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service in their 2013 study, Volunteering and Civic Life in America, 64.5 million people in the U.S. volunteered during the preceding year in a formal organization and for all kinds of reasons. That’s a 26.5% rate of volunteering for us as a nation, or one in four people. And, Hampton Roads is just as engaged in volunteer activities.

I would ask all of you to consider giving back to our community and helping our region to raise our rate of volunteerism. As Jack Kemp, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development once said, “The power of one man or one woman doing the right thing for the right reason, and at the right time, is the greatest influence in our society.” VOLUNTEER.
